  • DEVOTED ADULTS | West Suburban Residents Helping Kids

Children are the future and west suburban Chicago is home to countless adults who are devoted to making a difference in their lives. Here, we feature a few of them. Get to know these individuals and couples who are paving the way for kids in the area in a variety of ways. Their stories will uplift and inspire you as they share how they’re giving back to local kids. Mike Clements of Geneva Mike and wife Elizabeth first lived in Sugar Grove, and briefly moved to Chicago. After having their son, Mikey, they moved back to Geneva in 2013 and have never looked back. Mike is a new child advocate for CASA Kane County. He first became involved with CASA Kane County back in October of 2014 as a member of the chairman’s advisory panel. Shortly after joining the panel, Mike began the training process to become an advocate. “The training is extensive and requires several months to complete,” he says. “At its core the primary responsibilities of an advocate are to give the child a voice in the system, to be a constant in their life, and to be the eyes and ears of the court.” Mike was sworn in this past April. As for his devotion to the children in the area, Mikes credits being a father himself and knowing that his own son feels safe, happy, and loved. “Although all children deserve to feel safe, happy, and loved, many do not,” he shares. “I am devoted to helping as many of these children as possible to thrive in life, not just survive." To learn more about CASA Kane County visit here www.casakanecounty.org Ellen Beaulieu of Sugar Grove Ellen Beaulieu and husband Ed have lived in Sugar Grove for the last 14 years and have two sons, Austin and Cole. The couple recently sold their home in Lakes of Bliss Woods and purchased one of Sugar Grove’s oldest farmhouses, which they are remodeling and seeking to make a historical landmark. Ellen really enjoys being outdoors and around animals, which is one of the reasons she decided to purchase a farm and became a volunteer for Farm Friends in 2010. Farm Friends was established in 2008 by Ted and Susan McCannon and “its mission is to assist individuals and families with special challenges by providing suitable workshops, enjoyable activities, and therapeutic programs for people with unique needs in a peaceful rural farm setting,” she adds. Ellen has always loved working with individuals with special needs and Farm Friends has brought her back to her original passion of special education. “My goal and mission is to create unique opportunities for people with special needs,” she shares. “I’m committed to sharing my love of nature and animals with others to illustrate how connected and similar we all are.” Farm friends will be hosting four special family fun days this summer on 6/14, 7/19, 8/16 and 9/20. To learn more visit www.farmfriendsnfp.org Jackie Boquist of Palatine / Wheaton Jackie Boquist has lived in the Chicagoland area all her life, growing up in Libertyville, and moving to Palatine about a year ago with fiancé Matt. The couple also has a pet rabbit named Oliver. For Jackie, the love of nature is a constant calling. “Whether it’s walking, hiking, canoeing, or just sitting and listening to bird calls, as long as I’m outside, I’m happy,” she adds. Her love of nature spills over in her work, as she’s an educator at the Cosley Zoo and has been for 2.5 years. Last fall, Hillary Shumate, a teacher at Hadley Junior High in Glen Ellyn, reached out to her to help them come up with a “problem” for their 7th grade science students. This problem would be used to implement a new district initiative called problem based learning, or PBL. To help the Hadley 7th graders, Jackie sat down with other Cosley Zoo staff members and came up with a challenge for the kids and helped them develop and research answers for that particular challenge. “It was great for the students and their learning growth, but it was also really rewarding for me to watch them take ownership of their ideas,” she says. To find out more about problem-based learning, visit www.d41.org/d41pbl.htm. To learn more about Cosley Zoo, visit cosleyzoo.org. Tom and Kathy Liss of Downers Grove Tom and Kathy Liss have three daughters, identical twins born three months premature, Amy and Kelly (32), and their younger daughter, Lindsay (27). The couple has resided in Downers Grove since 1987. Both Tom and Kathy are active with Easter Seals DuPage & Fox Valley. Their daughter Amy has severe cerebral palsy and is a spastic quadriplegic, and receives occupational, physical, and speech therapy at Easter Seals. “It’s very easy to give back to a place that has done so much for us,” the couple shares. “Easter Seals has provided us with the therapy Amy needed and the support that we needed for 32 years.” Tom and Kathy not only lend a helping hand in all aspects of Easter Seals, but their twins Amy and Kelly have worked together for the past 6.5 years in the development department to further client relationships and promote the organization’s mission by planning fundraising events. The couple recently received the Carol and Jack Sanicki Crystal Heart Award, recognizing their 30+ years of commitment to Easter Seals. “We were humbled and honored to receive the Crystal Heart Award this year,” they share. “We may deserve a piece of this award, but it really belongs to Amy’s team – all those who love and support her every day.” To learn more visit www.eastersealsdfvr.org Liss photos by volunteer photographer Rich Howe Photos by Lynn Logan Unless Otherwise Submitted

Is your home suffering from an acute case of “cabin fever”? Well then it’s time to bid your home’s winter malaise adieu, and say hello to a lighter and perkier spring style. These impactful yet simple design updates will return the spring to your home’s step in no time! 1. Artwork For The Floor Looking to redecorate and don’t know where to begin? Do you pick the paint color? Buy or rearrange the furniture? Set the tone with new accessories? According to www.hgtv.com , consider buying the area rug first (they call it “artwork for the floor”). With a new floor covering, the sky is the limit as you can then decorate the rest of the room with paint, throw pillows, and other accessories around the colors and patterns in the rug. Strawflower Shop & Rug Merchant – Geneva, www.strawflowershop.com/#/home/ 2. Unique Custom Window Treatments If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then the windows in your home can definitely be considered the eyes of any room. And what better way to express a room’s personality than through unique window treatments? Bold patterns signal family fun, while tailored and elegant are stately, and perfect for a formal dining room. Nona Jo’s – Naperville, www.nonajos.com/ 3. Florals Add Color and Vibrancy The first real signs of spring usually include birds chirping, humid warmth in the air, and new growth emerging from the soil. If you want to bring that feeling of rebirth and rejuvenation inside, it can be as simple as dotting your home’s landscape with a touch of green. Silk floral arrangements in various shapes, colors, and sizes are just the right addition for a light, springy feel. Max Logan’s Home Accents – Downers Grove, www.maxlogans.com 4. Big Chunky Pieces We’re seeing more big chunky pieces these days, serving as unique and eclectic centerpieces and focal points in people’s homes. Oversized ottomans covered in bold patterns or colors, stocky or brightly painted antique trunks, or a set of lacquered nesting tables can add a playful element to any room. Home Again Resale Shop – Wheaton, www.homeagainresale.com 5. Unique Pairings The easiest way to add a touch of whimsy to a room is to pick a color palette that is surprising. Among the favorite dynamic duos on www.huffingtonpost.com: turquoise and tangerine, violet and marigold, and cobalt blue and fuchsia. Not in the mood to lug out the brushes and paint? Update your room using accessories such as vases, frames, and wall art in these striking color combinations. The Marmalade Tree – Oswego, www.facebook.com/pages/The-Marmalade-Tree/153685931316424 6. Vintage Collectibles and Other Antiques If you consider yourself on-trend, but would like to incorporate a little “old-school” in your home’s style, you may want to think about vintage collectibles. To really add integrity to your design style, we checked with www.countryliving.com, and found that their editors give the nod to such budget-friendly items as antique dinnerware, ceramic figurines and utensils, and miniature busts. The Perfect Thing – Wheaton, www.theperfectthing.net/ 7. Upcyling What is upcycling? According to www.hipcycle.com it is the process of converting old or discarded materials into something useful and beautiful. So, for example, who knew that you could stack a couple pieces of old luggage or use a vintage trunk to create a stylish nightstand? Or adorn the front of an antique decorative bird cage with hooks and clips to serve as a chic jewelry holder? In 1990, I had my amazing daughter. I have been blessed with many gifts through the years, but none more important than being a mother to my children. I was raised in an Irish family with six sisters and one brother. I became an attorney, mediator, speaker, and author perhaps because I learned at a very young age that mediation and negotiation were necessary to survive in a large family. I have found a calling in my law practice, helping people navigate through difficult times.” 2. Lindsay Stella Family Law Attorney Town…Naperville Mom of…2 children 3 Words Describing Me as a Mom…“Compassionate, Patient, Multi-Tasker.” One Lasting Impression I Hope to Leave on My Children…“They can be whatever they want to be with hard work and dedication, and that whatever choices they make, my love for them will always be unconditional.” In Her Own Words....“I have been a family law attorney for five years and had my first son 2 years ago. After he was born, my outlook on the profession changed. I now have a profound insight into what my clients feel when faced with the tough situations regarding the custody of their children. I have been fortunate enough to be successful in my career; being named one of the top 10 family law attorneys in Illinois under 40 and a Super Lawyer Rising Star. My days are hectic; but despite a satisfying (and busy) career, my happiness truly begins at home.” 3. I serve on the board of The Infant Welfare Society of Chicago, Hinsdale chapter, and am a member of the Hinsdale Cooks Kitchen Walk, benefiting the Hinsdale Historical Society. Additionally, I spearhead the Monroe Elementary School’s annual Day of Service. My greatest blessings are my husband and two children, ages 14 and 12. I hope that my children will follow my lead, as adults, in helping others in need. Overall, I hope my children find and pursue their true passion in life and are kind people. All else will follow.” 4. I owned a business for 20 years, and sold it in 2013. I took time off to volunteer, as my children were all grown. In 2014, the position of CEO/president for the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce opened up. I have always been an advocate of the Chamber and being a business owner I felt it was a perfect fit. It is the first time a woman has held this position, so I’m proud to bring a unique perspective. I love my job and the ability to help others find their success!” 5. While being a full-time mom, I also work full-time as an interior designer. I own my own business called Peppeard Interiors. I am the oldest of four children and even as a young child I had a lot of responsibility. As I grew older, I continued to learn that perseverance and effort can allow anyone to achieve what they think is only a dream. I teach my children that nothing comes easy in life and in order to achieve and succeed in whatever you do, hard work is a determining factor.” 6. Carla Jean (CJ) Lydon Farmers Insurance Agent Town....Naperville Mom of....3 children, 3 grandchildren 3 Words Describing Me as a Mom.... “Devoted, Selfless, Loving.” One Lasting Impression I Hope to Leave on My Children.... “Our life isn't measured by what we have, rather it is by what we have given and how we have treated others.” In Her Own Words.... “Raising my three children as a single mom wasn't easy. You make many sacrifices and pray you made the right ones. It’s extremely important to me that my children and grandchildren understand that everything we have and everyone in our life are gifts from God. It’s up to us as individuals how we choose to use and value these gifts. Spend time with your loved ones and always love them no matter what. Giving back, loving all people, forgiving even when it's hard to, and living a life that isn't just ‘all about me’!” 7. There is always the sound of activity with music and sports, which is exactly how I like it. My van is in drive more than it’s in park. I LOVE watching my children in their activities. My children love doing music individually, but we also love performing together as a family. We just finished our first CD as a family band entitled, “The Daydream.” My husband and I wrote all of the music and my children sang the songs. We play at local libraries and perform together at church. I am blessed to be the mother of my children.” 8. It started when I was a little girl. After having a career in retail for over a decade I had four children in five years. After staying home for 15 years raising the children and doing some styling on the side I realized I was missing a part of me. Opening the doors to my consignment store with business partner Christina Stammen was amazing and empowering. My favorite part of the business is styling clients and watching them transform. It’s been 6 years and all of my children have been part of the business!” 9. Ann Marie Andexler Administrative Assistant Town....Glen Ellyn Mom of....4 children 3 Words Describing Me as a Mom....“Passionate, Determined, Faithful.” One Lasting Impression I Hope to Leave on My Children....“Whether you climb mountaintops or fall into a valley, God will be with you always and love you unconditionally.” In Her Own Words.... “We came to Illinois with just summer clothes and no money. I remember going into the supermarket and not even affording a loaf of bread for my children. Desperately trying to take care of my children, I sought out any help I could find. Miracle number one, Bridge Communities. As the time at Bridge was ending, I was at another crossroads. Miracle number two, Habitat for Humanity. I applied to Habitat and got accepted. • THE CHICAGO WINO | July 2015

Jean-Luc Colombo Cape Bleue Rose, 2014 Summer in Chicagoland…is there anything better?? Whether you are going to a graduation party, Fourth of July BBQ, or maybe even attending a wedding on Naperville’s Riverwalk or along the Fox River, you will have plenty of opportunities to enjoy wines perfectly paired with this warmer weather. Outdoor parties notoriously feature coolers of beer and hard lemonades. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a good malt and hops once in a while, but there are also so many good grapes to quench your summer thirst. Take a Rosé for instance – It’s light, crisp, and super refreshing, like me. Jean-Luc Colombo Cape Bleue Rose, 2014 is a delicious representation of Rosé although there are many different styles, bodies, and flavors. This particular one is a blend of 67% Syrah and 33% Mourvedre. Subtle hints of peach, watermelon, and rose petal on the nose with beautiful flavors of raspberries, strawberries, and cherries. It had a delicious creaminess about it as it sat in my glass a little longer. Good acidity and great mouthfeel. This is easy to drink on its own but can be easily paired with cheeses, fish, and vegetarian fare. So the next time you’re invited to that summer party and you want to bring a bottle, pick from the many different options there are of Rosé. Sláinte! • SUBURBAN TRIUMPH | Sharon Marston

“It was a channel for grief and surprise, and a way to fight back,” said Sharon Marston of Glen Ellyn. The Jack H. Marston II Melanoma Fund was established in July 2004 after the untimely death of Sharon’s husband, Jack, at the age of 47. He had been diagnosed only nine months earlier with melanoma. “The disease was so quick to take him,” she said. “There were many ups and downs but we thought he was going to beat it. When he did pass away it was a surprise to many in the community. Everybody wanted to do something.” At the time, Sharon said, there was limited awareness about melanoma, and little research. “People in Glen Ellyn like to jump in and help and do whatever they can when something like this happens,” she said. Friends and family coordinated the This Run’s for Jack 5k as a fundraiser, thinking it would be a one-time event. “We put it together in only seven weeks, and raised more than $50,000,” said Sharon. “People asked us to continue to do the event, and that’s what sparked us. We thought we’d do one more, and then one more, and now we’re in our twelfth year.” The event draws approximately 2000 participants each year and raises $50,000 annually. “We’ve donated $300,000 to research, and work hard to create awareness about melanoma,” Sharon said, explaining that they have educational initiatives and distribute sunscreen for sports programs throughout Glen Ellyn. They also support academic scholarships to area students. The 5k has “spun off” to marathon teams, said Sharon. “We’re an official charity for the Chicago and the New York marathons. We’ve had a team in Boston too. And people will form their own teams for events including the Marine Marathon, Kentucky Marathon, and more.” Awareness about melanoma and preventative measures has increased significantly over the past twelve years. “However, it’s still not something you hear as much about as breast cancer or lung cancer,” Sharon said. Sharon believes that “somehow, someway, Jack is driving this charity. It just keeps growing and I think he’s the reason that it is what it is. He’s the driving force,” she said. “I just spoke to a junior high school and said, ‘if my husband had beaten the disease, he’d be here speaking about it. That’s how passionate he was about beating this and helping others.’” “So much that has happened has been because of the support of the community. This has helped my family heal, and now we reach out to help others. When you help others, you heal yourself. That’s what has happened here,” Sharon said. The 12th Annual This Run’s for Jack 5k will be held on October 18 at Ackerman Park in Glen Ellyn. • TALES FROM THE HIGH WIRE | June' 15

Kid at Heart Does anybody need a nanny for the summer? I’ve pretty much raised two children already…not to mention, I have THE two words every mom looking for a nanny wants to hear – no, not “unconditional love” or “caring patience” - reliable transportation. I also really love making pb&j’s. My teenagers don’t really need the crusts cut off anymore, but I’ve still got mad crust-cutting skills. I also enjoy turning cartwheels, the smell of Play-doh, and playing Go Fish! Exploring new career opportunities? Perhaps. But more, just exploring new ideas for summer…thinking outside the box and would love to try something new, or new again…being a kid at heart sounds fun, doesn’t it? I just got done writing the waterpark feature for this month’s 7 Spectacular and it got me thinking about how much fun it would be to work at one of them. All that water, all that sun, all those hot dogs and ice cream cones! Raging Waves is not too far from my house, I wonder if they are hiring. Personally, I think Hasselhoff, Pam Anderson, and I would get along swimmingly and the “uniform” is red – my FAVORITE color! When I was a kid we went camping for fun. Hmmmmmm….camping. Maybe I should become a Girl Scout leader – I’d likely be the only “no daughter, no niece, no neighbor-kid-whose-mom-has-to-work-so-I’m-filling-in” type of mom, but who cares. There’s got to be a manual out there I could read. Do you think seeing the movie Wild counts? As you all know, when I doubt, I ask my daughter. Here’s how that went… Me: What new venture do you think I should try this summer? Her: Writing a country song Me: {insert puzzled look} Her: Well, you’re a writer and country songs are only about three things: girls, alcohol, and…summer! That got me thinking. I do have the hat, the boots and the guitar. How hard could this be? Girls (easy enough – I just happen to be one), alcohol (the two of us are acquainted), and summer (OH YEAH!). Maybe DuPage School of Rock has a spot open for me. I bet all the best music stars start out like that – at summer camp, strumming their guitars, banging on the drums, writing crazy good lyrics. Look out T. Swift…T. Schultz is comin’ to get ya! I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling like something new. Cheers, friends (I’m raising my wine cooler to you and strumming my guitar, as we speak)….here’s to a summer full of fun and being a kid at heart! about the writer Tiffany Schultz resides in Sugar Grove with her husband, two kids and Shih Tzu. While seeking balance between her dueling roles as wife, mother, daughter, friend and professional, Tiffany spends as much time as possible daydreaming on her screen porch. She enjoys cooking, traveling and yoga and hopes to one day learn Italian and make the perfect crème brulee. #tiffanyschultz

  • 7 SPECTACULAR | Places Baby Boomers Like to Visit Today

According to Wikipedia, Baby Boomers are a large segment of the population, due to the increased birth rate post-World War II, who were born between 1946-1964. What Wiki forgot to mention is that they are a pretty enthusiastic and dynamic group, who are movin’-n-shakin’ by leading very active lifestyles. 1. Visiting Upscale Salons Whether it’s a new cut or color, Boomer moms love to try new things. Popular today is what’s called an "asymmetrical bob" which is a bit sassier and Boomers love the added whimsy to this classic cut! Also on their list: flirty nails, fabulous toes, and feeling good by indulging in massage or foot reflexology. Zazu Salons have locations in Naperville, Wheaton, and Hinsdale, www.zazusalons.com and Mario Tricoci has locations in Naperville, Geneva, and Oakbrook, www.tricoci.com. 2. Shopping on Main Street You know that song, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”? You won’t find Boomer moms sitting on a park bench watching a sunny day pass them by. Instead they call a couple of their best girlfriends and meet down on Main Street for a day full of strolling and shopping. Special Occasions on the Avenue – Batavia, www.specialoccasionsontheavenue.com, M and Em’s – Glen Ellyn, www.mandems.com, and Serenade – Wheaton, www.serenadehome.com. 3. Doing Good Deeds by Volunteering A good deed makes everyone feel good: the giver and the receiver alike. And Boomer moms know exactly how to give of themselves to make a difference in others' lives. Today, with such a vast array of volunteering opportunities, the world of volunteering is your oyster, Boomer moms! Hinsdale Humane Society, www.hinsdalehumanesociety.org, Living Well Cancer Center – Geneva, www.livingwellcrc.org and Celebrate Differences – Oswego, www.celebratedifferences.org. 4. Continuing to Cultivate Their Interests Golfing, taking an active role in church, knitting – you name it, they do it…and do it well! And these are just some of the activities active Boomers are enjoying. These days it’s not at all unusual to also see them join musical groups, explore foreign countries, or learn to rumba. Misty River Music Makers – Batavia, www.mistyrivermusicmakers.org, Bliss Creek Golf Course, www.blisscreekgolf.com and Knitche, Inc. – Downers Grove, www.knitche.com. 5. Spending Time with Grandchildren Part of what keeps these ladies so young is spending time with the young ones in their lives: GRANDCHILDREN! Strolling through and learning about gardens, indulging in a Saturday matinee, or sitting beside one another while painting a pretty picture is the short list of how to spend an afternoon together that is not bound by a certain skill set or age. Morton Arboretum – Lisle, www.mortonarb.org, Hollywood Palms – Naperville, www.hollywoodpalmscinema.com/ and Pinot’s Palette – Naperville, www.pinotspalette.com/Naperville. 6. Healthy Cooking & Eating Healthy eating has come a long way since the days of the grapefruit or cabbage soup diets. Today it’s all about the fusion and flavor of fresh ingredients…and not being afraid to try new things. And given the fact that Boomers are adventurous by nature, this trend isn’t going away anytime soon. Blue Goose Market – St. Charles, www.bluegoosemarket.com, The Lemon Tree Grocer – Downers Grove, www.lemontreegrocer.com and Rustic Road Farm – Elburn, www.facebook.com/RusticRoadFarm. 7. Immersing Herself in the Arts It’s no wonder area art leagues and councils are BOOMING (pun intended!). The Huffington Post Canada* reported, in an article about being creative as we age, that those who participated in weekly art classes were in better health, had fewer doctor visits, and used less medication than the control group who didn’t engage in such activities.
