FIND FRESHEST FOOD POSSIBLE AT PRIMROSE FARM STAND Nothing tastes so good as a tomato plucked right off the vine or a freshly-picked ear of corn, yet few home gardeners have the time, space or skill to put such delectable edibles on their table. That’s when a trip to The Farmstand at Primrose Farm in St. Charles can beef up one’s menu with fresh vegetables, fruits and farm-fresh eggs. With the local growing season just getting started, The Farmstand is brimming with lettuces and cabbages, chards and beets at their peak and ready to eat. Supplied by local organic farmers Jeff Hughes and Ellen Kamps of Foxtrot Organic Farms, The Farmstand boasts exceptional and unusual produce not found in traditional grocery stores. “Foxtrot is known for their rare heirloom and open-pollinated varieties,” said Alison Jones, Manager of Farm Programs and Interpretive Services. “They have a reputation within the region for the quality and diversity of their produce.” A USDA-certified organic farm, Foxtrot plants over 130 varieties of fruits and vegetables chosen for their practicality in the kitchen and beauty on the plate. Who wouldn’t want to dig into a salad comprised of Troutback romaine lettuce with its beautiful red-and-green variegation or create a stir-fry of baby savoy cabbage and orange cauliflower. Yes, orange cauliflower. And purple carrots and blue potatoes. Rainbow swiss card and candy-striped beets. A trip to The Farmstand is a visual and healthful delight. “It’s a fun shopping experience, especially for children,” said Jones. “Who wouldn’t want to taste a tomato as yellow as the sun or brilliantly striped squash?” Kids aren’t the only ones who will be intrigued by familiar vegetables in unfamiliar colors and shapes. For the adventurous cook wanting to expand their culinary horizons, the staff at The Farmstand stand ready to answer questions, offer cooking suggestions and maybe even give a little taste of something new and unusual. “Shopping at The Farmstand is a much more friendly, personal and educational experience than your typical trip up and down the aisles at the grocery store,” said Jones. Along with the fruits, vegetables, herbs and even cut flowers supplied by Foxtrot Organics, The Farmstand will offer eggs produced by Primrose Farm’s own resident Columbian Wyandotte chickens. These distinctively-feathered fowl is an American breed dating back to the late 19th-century and are known for producing a light brown egg. Now in its fourth season, The Farmstand is open every Wednesday from 3-7pm and Saturday 9am-1pm. The Farmstand is located at the entrance to Primrose Farm at 5N726 Crane Road, St. Charles. • CARING + SHARING | Hero Mom

JO ANN MIRABELLI, NAPERVILLE SURVIVOR WITH A TWIST OF FATE Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer with Bone Metastasis – AGAIN! What the heck? Some people never get it once; but, Jo Ann is on the receiving end of some sick twist of fate bringing her from being your typical suburban PTA sports mom, chairing countless committees at Prairie Elementary, Washington Junior High, and Naperville North High School, to heavily depending on her husband and friends so she could focus on surgeries, chemo, radiation treatments, and oral meds - not once, but now twice in her lifetime…..but she will prevail! The journey that began in 2011 and was pushed into remission for nearly 6 years is back with a vengeance. It wasn’t enough that remission didn’t return life back to how it was pre-boarding the cancer train, but now the train is roaring down the tracks again. “During remission, I struggled with fatigue, migraines, dizziness and vertigo, strength and mobility issues, anxiety and some post-traumatic stress. I also developed new allergies and was in chemically induced menopause, which in itself comes with its own side effects,” Jo Ann shares. “People often think you went through treatment and now you are in remission, and can go back to your old self; unfortunately, for me it was not that way.” Her husband and her kids, now 23, 20, and 14, are her rock and always look at the glass as half full. Jo Ann gains strength from them and forges ahead. She keeps her emotions in check by keeping it real via www./joannmirabelli.blogspot.com / and continuing to work out and eat clean. “I talk about it all – the good, the bad, and the ugly. I let people see the raw and vulnerable side to my life,” she says. “We have to be honest first to ourselves and with that you can make remarkable changes in your life.” -Kristen Kucharski #CaringSharing #KristenKucharski #HeroMomstoKnow #June12017 #June152017 #Naperville

  • WOMEN OF STRENGTH | June 2017 Messages Shared

STRIVING FOR BETTER “I was inspired by my son Troy, to create A Special Place in Naperville to enrich and enhance the lives of special needs individuals and their families through the Arts and social interaction. These programs include Buddy Theater, Saturday Night Spectacular, Flag Football and Basketball Camps, that young adults can never age out. I am striving to make life better for our kids as they turn into adults; and remain strong because there are more challenges ahead of us. I will always be there to advocate for them. It is up to me to make it better.” –Cheryl Butler, Naperville JUST DO IT “As the leader of Girl Scout Troop 4532 for years and leading them to build self-esteem, display confidence, and target big goals - such as raising enough money for the clock tower which was installed in downtown Oswego in 2014; I’ve learned to always keep the Nike motto in mind – “Just Do It”. I'm aware of obstructions and things that could go wrong, but I choose not to focus on them. If I did, I think I would have been too afraid to take on many of my most meaningful and challenging experiences." –Pam Roberts, Oswego (Pictured Back Left) HOPE FOR THE FUTURE “Two of my 4 children, Noah and Laine battle a rare genetic illness called CLN2 Batten disease, that has ruthlessly robbed them of their once normal abilities including speech, mobility, eating….and just recently, Noah’s life, as well; but I continue to create optimism by bringing attention and funding to this terminal disease through Noah's Hope Fund, a non-profit organization supporting research by hosting fun events. My strength comes my children and from historic moments like this past April when we received FDA approval for an enzyme replacement therapy CLN2 Batten disease, which is one of 14 forms of Batten disease.” –Jennifer VanHoutan, Downers Grove To share your message with our readers: www.glancermagazine.com/womenofstrength #GlancerMagazine #LIfestyle #LocalWomen #WomenofStrength #June12017 #June152017 #Naperville #Oswego #DownersGrove

  • TECH TIME | The Age of Video Surveillance

KEEPING US SECURE or TRAMPLING OUR FREEDOMS? Americans are being spied on all the time – whether they think about it or not. Pump gas? A camera is watching. Go to the ATM? The transaction is captured on video. Run a red light? A camera may record the violation and a ticket may follow. Sometimes this video vigilance works nicely. When law enforcement agencies investigated the Boston Marathon bombing, surveillance cameras from businesses up and down the street helped them zero in on the perpetrators. But that extra security comes with a tradeoff in privacy. “It’s great for law enforcement, but it infringes on our rights to be free from unlawful searches and seizures under the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution,” says Yoni Levoritz ( www.levoritzlaw.com ), a New York attorney who has concerns about the civil liberties issues even as he acknowledges some of the advantages those all-seeing cameras provide. “You should be able to travel around the country without being watched every step of the way, but these days it seems like you can’t sneeze without being on camera.” The cameras aren’t going away, mostly because there are too many of them, some put in place by government, others by private businesses or individuals. Levoritz says it’s worth noting that there are plenty of legitimate arguments from both sides of the video divide, such as: Pro – The cameras provide police an extra set of eyes. Turn on the evening news and it’s not unusual to see a report – complete with videotape – of a convenience store or bank robbery. In the past, police released detailed descriptions of robbers to seek the public’s help in apprehending them. Now they show the robber in action. Con – They may not make us safer. The camera catches criminal activities after the fact, not before. “You could say that the possibility of a camera recording a robbery is a deterrent for some criminals,” Levoritz says. “But it’s really hard to make that argument considering that crime still happens in places where the person has to know they are being videotaped.” Pro – Law enforcement doesn’t have to be everywhere. Have you ever seen someone blast through a red light and thought to yourself, “There’s never a cop around when you need one”? Now there is – sort of. Those red-light scofflaws often get a ticket in the mail a few weeks later. Con – Some cameras are more about generating money than creating safety. Critics of red-light cameras have claimed almost from the beginning that the goal is to collect money from fines and not to reduce violations. “Certainly, surveillance cameras give investigators a great tool when a crime is committed, and there’s something to be said for that,” Levoritz says. “But the risk is that, as we give up a measure of privacy, it’s turning the country into something the Founders didn’t want.” About Yoni Levoritz Yoni Levoritz, founder of the Levoritz Law Group (www.levoritzlaw.com), practices matrimonial and family law, business law and civil law, and is an AV-rated attorney by Martindale-Hubbell. He has an undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland and a law degree from Touro College, Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center. In 2008, Levoritz was named Professional of the Year in Matrimonial Law by Strathmore’s Who’s Who. At the time, he was the youngest attorney to be awarded this honor. #GlancerMagazine #TechTime #Business
