​Q. What is a good New Year resolution?

A. New Year’s Day has come and gone, and thousands of people will open their wallets and give money to their local gym. They'll treat it like a charity because they'll pay each month, yet not go. Why do they do this? Because they've “resolved to get in shape this year.” A declaration of resolve is not a plan; it’s a goal. Joining a gym is an obvious step towards this goal, yet a goal in the absence of a plan is just an ideal or dream.

Resolutions are well meaning and intended, but they typically lack the thought and foresight required to be attained. For example, joining the local gym is a great step to getting in shape, but if one's lifestyle isn't conducive to going to the gym, then one won't go to the gym. Realities must be considered in order to make a resolution successful.

Statistically, most people succeed in achieving their resolutions if they're realistic about what they are capable of achieving. So in 2015, resolve to make a resolution that is achievable, realistic, and important to you. By doing those things, your resolution won't be pointless; you'll accept the realities of your life circumstance, and by doing this, will set yourself up for success. Have a Happy New Year!
