  • LANDSCAPING | Planting Trees In the Fall

    Q. Are there advantages to planting trees in the fall? Fall officially begins with the autumnal equinox in late September, however for planting purposes, once we pass Labor Day we consider it fall planting season. Many people incorrectly assume that the growing season ends with the onset of fall. In fact, quite to the contrary, the growing season continues well into fall. Here in lies the key reason that fall is such a good time to plant trees, it is the season of active root growth. Trees installed in fall will establish themselves into the landscape long after they have shed their seasonal leaves. This establishment occurs in a time that homeowners are required to water less and develops trees that are ready to flourish the next season. Additionally, with an established root system, trees installed this fall will be far more resistant to damage and/or stress that may develop if we experience a mid-season drought or insect infestation next year. While it is true that many species can’t be transplanted in the fall, all species can be planted. What this means is that we can’t dig a Magnolia for example from our fields now, however a spring dug Magnolia that is properly cared for in our holding yard can be installed into your landscape in the fall achieving the same benefits as described above. As for how late to plant, it depends heavily on the property and the species. Evergreen trees should typically go in no later than mid-November unless the weather is mild and the ground is far from holding front. For deciduous trees most varieties are fine to plant all the way to Thanksgiving. ask an expert Eric D. Bruss, APLD is the owner of Bruss Landscaping, Inc. Bruss landscaping has been providing high quality landscape design and installation services to the area since 1952. The group was founded in the fall of 1981 in Jamestown, NY, byRobert Buck, Dennis Drew, Steven Gustafson, John Lombardo and Natalie Merchant with the later addition of Jerry Augustyniak in 1983. Together with artists like R.E.M. they helped define “college rock” and the first wave of “alternative rock” bands with their pop-conscious, literate and lush aesthetic. 10,000 Maniacs first gained widespread recognition with 1987’s In My Tribe (Elektra). The record featured the hit singles “Hey Jack Kerouac,” “Like The Weather,””Don’t Talk” and “What’s The Matter Here?” The album went to #37 on the Billboard Magazine Top 200 chart and sold over 2 million copies. Rolling Stone Magazine included the album in their “One Hundred Best Albums of the Eighties.” The band sold 3 million copies in 1992 with the landmark Our Time In Eden (Elektra), bolstered by alt-rock radio mainstays “These Are Days” and “Candy Everybody Wants 10,000 Maniacs added backing singer/violist Mary Ramsey in 1991. She performed on the band’s biggest selling record, 1993’s MTV Unplugged (Elektra), which featured the remake of the classic, "Because the Night.” The CD sold over 4 million copies. Merchant left the band in 1993 with Ramsey assuming the lead vocalist position. According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, she “brilliantly rose to the occasion.” In fact, the band’s top charting single on Billboard was the band’s cover of the Roxy Music song “More Than This,” featuring Ramsey on lead vocals, from their 1997 album Love Among The Ruins (Geffen). In 2004, Elektra/Asylum/Rhino Records released Campfire Songs: The Popular, Obscure and Unknown Recordings, a two CD set compilation featuring a broad array of their groundbreaking music including several unreleased tracks. In 2013, 10,000 Maniacs released Music From The Motion Picture, their first full-length album in 13 years. The album was completely crowd funded and produced independently by the group themselves. It was hailed as a beautiful affirmation of the band’s classic poetic lyrics and dreamy Americana blend. The band's newest recording, Twice Told Tales, is a full-length collection of traditional British Isles folk songs and it was released on both CD as well as a special 180-gram 12” vinyl format on Cleopatra Records on April 28, 2015. Founding member and keyboardist Dennis Drew explains the germination of the project, “Folk music of all types has been a strong influence on the band. One of the songs on the new record ‘Do You Love An Apple’ has been in our repertoire for 30 years. We’ve also recorded Carter family songs and other American, Irish and British Folk music in the past. These are timeless melodies.” Drew continues, “Some songs are funny, some are heartbreaking. Most are 100, 200, 300 years old. It’s crazy how they can be turned into 21st century pop songs!” The band continues to tour incessantly in the U.S. and has made many new fans in Mexico, Germany, Japan, Portugal and Brazil with their Pledgemusic campaigns. Their Pledgemusic campaign has also raised money for Children’s Hospital of Buffalo and The Robert Buck Memorial Scholarship fund in honor of the late guitarist who passed away in 2000. • A & E | Singer-Songwriter Jewel Coming to Naperville

Meet Singer-Songwriter Jewel at Wentz Hall During this Special Anderson’s Bookshop Event Celebrated for her poetry, voice, songwriting and performances, Jewel is a worldwide success. And now, with this moving memoir, she’s an author too! Meet Jewel when she comes to Naperville for an Anderson’s Bookshop event at Wentz Hall, on the campus of North Central College, on Tuesday, September 29 at 7 pm. And not only will Jewel be discussing her beautiful memoir, Never Broken, but she has agreed to perform! A booksigning opportunity will follow Jewel’s talk. This program, sponsored by Anderson’s Bookshops, takes place at Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave., Naperville. Tickets are required and available with the purchase of the author’s new book at Anderson’s Bookshop, 123 W. Jefferson Ave., in downtown Naperville, (630) 355-2665. ABOUT THE BOOK: New York Times bestselling poet and multi-platinum singer-songwriter Jewel explores her unconventional upbringing and extraordinary life in an inspirational memoir that covers her childhood to fame, marriage, and motherhood. When Jewel’s first album, Pieces of You, topped the charts in 1995, her emotional voice and vulnerable performance were groundbreaking. Drawing comparisons to Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell, a singer-songwriter of her kind had not emerged in decades. Now, with more than thirty million albums sold worldwide, Jewel tells the story of her life, and the lessons learned from her experience and her music. Living on a homestead in Alaska, Jewel learned to yodel at age five, and joined her parents’ entertainment act, working in hotels, honky-tonks, and biker bars. Behind a strong-willed family life with an emphasis on music and artistic talent, however, there was also instability, abuse, and trauma. At age fifteen, she moved out and tasked herself with a mission: to see if she could avoid being the kind of statistic that her past indicated for her future. Soon after, she was accepted to the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, and there she began writing her own songs as a means of expressing herself and documenting her journey to find happiness. Jewel was eighteen and homeless in San Diego when a radio DJ aired a bootleg version of one of her songs and it was requested into the top-ten countdown, something unheard-of for an unsigned artist. By the time she was twenty-one, her debut had gone multiplatinum. There is much more to Jewel’s story, though, one complicated by family legacies, by crippling fear and insecurity, and by the extraordinary circumstances in which she managed to flourish and find happiness despite these obstacles. Along her road of self-discovery, learning to redirect her fate, Jewel has become an iconic singer and songwriter. In Never Broken she reflects on how she survived, and how writing songs, poetry, and prose has saved her life many times over. She writes lyrically about the natural wonders of Alaska, about pain and loss, about the healing power of motherhood, and about discovering her own identity years after the entire world had discovered the beauty of her songs. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Jewel is an American singer, songwriter, poet, actress, philanthropist, and mother. She has received four Grammy Award nominations and has sold more than thirty million albums worldwide. She is the founder of Project Clean Water, and author of the New York Times bestseller A Night Without Armor: Poems as well as two books for children. Raised in Homer, Alaska, Jewel currently lives in Tennessee and Colorado with her son. • HERO MOM | September 2015

KRISTEN GRAY OF NAPERVILLE Founder of The Charlotte & Gwyneth Gray Foundation Watching her 4.5-year-old daughter, Charlotte, struggle on a daily basis with walking, speech and social interactions has been gut wrenching for Naperville native Kristen Gray, wife of Hollywood producer Gordon Gray (best known for making inspirational sports movies like Miracle, Million Dollar Arm, and The Rookie). Charlotte was diagnosed in March 2015 with late infantile NCL Batten disease CLN6. Charlotte’s 2-year-old sister, Gwyneth, shares the same diagnosis. This neurode-generative brain disease is extremely rare and will leave the girls blind, immobile, cognitively impaired - and life expectancy is between 6 and 12; hence the driving force behind funding 10 million dollars for immediate research. “We are taking a three-pronged approach with cellular therapy, gene therapy and small molecule therapy,” Kristen shares. “Secondly, we need to put money towards the proposals to get those treatments underway immediately as NO ONE else is doing it.” Even in Kristen’s most exhausted state, her mind is constantly running with what opportunities may arise tomorrow to halt the progression of the disease haunting her two young daughters. This hero mom has no plans on giving up until a cure is found. Support her fight at www.curebatten.org. • TALES FROM THE HIGH WIRE | September 2015

THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING A WOMAN… Girls’ Night – raise your hand if you’re a fan. In case you’re wondering, I have both hands up…and my big toe. Urban Dictionary defines “girls’ night” as: usually held at a cheesy Irish pub or dance club, where groups of females dress provocatively, flirt incessantly and dance badly. Uggggh! That’s what people think? I mean, provocative dresses, shameless flirting and Irish pubs are one thing, but dancing badly? Please…I’ve never danced badly a day in my life. However horrifying the above scenario sounds, I am sort of embarrassed to say, girls’ nights lately have been equally horrifying. Throwing my hair into a bun, slipping into yoga pants and whipping up a batch of margaritas – who wants to come over and watch Bridesmaids for the 47th time – is about the speed I’m traveling. I figured there’s got to be something in the middle. Something that says Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda go out on the town with a little bounce in their step and gleam in their eye. And shazam…like lightning in a (wine) bottle, I found it! My newest babe fav comes in the form of a crafty little spot, known as Bottle & Bottega. Yeah, it’s one of those paint-your-own places, but this one is so outside the proverbial “painting party” box, I was actually excited to be there (my usual M.O. is to break out in a cold sweat while cowering in the bathroom with a glass of wine – I’m THAT anxious about my lack of artistic ability). Bottle & Bottega has a go-with-the-flow vibe that instantly made me feel relaxed– sassy even! I loved that tons of colorful artwork was already on the walls – call it inspiration for the faint of heart – and a cute little bar area was in the corner, where we “set up shop” (a.k.a. uncork wine, cut cheese, unwrap crackers). And the fact that there was plenty of time to socialize before painting made it feel much more like play than performance. When painting began, our teacher was reassuring and lively – sorta like having our own Andy Cohen – we played a drinking game called “drink whenever a train rolls by” (we were in downtown Glen Ellyn, so you can imagine the sippin’ that was going on). Her level of encouragement and guidance created just the right amount of moxie in me to be inventive and clever…and not feel self-conscious about it. Yet another example of their “paint outside the lines” rather than “paint by number” mentality. Next on tap: Sexy Jock nearly nude model painting. Call it Sex in the City meets craft night! Bottle & Bottega is a byob interactive painting studio that offers public classes (see the calendar for details) or allows you to host private painting events. Their motto is that we all have master artists inside just waiting to be uncorked! 498 Crescent Blvd, Glen Ellyn, (630) 984-4955, www.bottleandbottega.com/glen-ellyn about the writer Tiffany Schultz resides in Sugar Grove with her husband, two kids and Shih Tzu. While seeking balance between her dueling roles as wife, mother, daughter, friend and professional, Tiffany spends as much time as possible daydreaming on her screen porch. She enjoys cooking, traveling and yoga and hopes to one day learn Italian and make the perfect crème brulee. #TalesFromtheHighWire

  • ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT | Rainn Wilson to Visit Naperville

MEET TV'S RAINN WILSON IN NAPERVILLE, NOV 13 Fans of TV’s The Office should get set for a special Anderson’s Bookshop event, coming at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 13 to Naperville’s Community Christian Church, 1635 Emerson Ln. Anderson’s author guest is Rainn Wilson, known to The Office fans as Dwight Schrute. But with Wilson’s new memoir, the actor proposes a new moniker: The Bassoon King. This memoir of his sometimes unconventional life will be discussed at the November event, followed by an audience Q & A session, and then a booksigning line. Tickets are required and available with the purchase of the author’s new book at Anderson’s Bookshop, 123 W. Jefferson Ave., in downtown Naperville, (630) 355-2665. ABOUT THE BOOK: Rainn Wilson’s memoir is about growing up geeky and finally finding his place in comedy, faith, and life. For nine seasons Rainn Wilson played Dwight Schrute, everyone’s favorite work nemesis and beet farmer. Viewers of The Office fell in love with the character and grew to love the actor who played him even more. Wilson founded a website and media company, Soul Pancake, which eventually became a bestselling book of the same name. He also started a hilarious Twitter feed (sample tweet: “I’m not on Facebook” is the new “I don’t even own a TV”) that now has more than four million followers. Now, he’s ready to tell his own story and explain how he came up with his incredibly unique sense of humor and perspective on life. He explains how he grew up “bone-numbingly nerdy before there was even a modicum of cool attached to the word.” The Bassoon King chronicles his journey from nerd to drama geek (“the highest rung on the vast, pimply ladder of high school losers”), his years of mild debauchery and struggles as a young actor in New York, his many adventures and insights about The Office, and finally, Wilson’s achievement of success and satisfaction, both in his career and spiritually, reconnecting with the artistic and creative values of the Bahá’í faith he grew up in. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: RAINN WILSON is best known for his Emmy-nominated role as Dwight Schrute on NBC’s The Office, though today he’s equally well-known for his millions of Twitter followers and the philosophy website he founded, Soul Pancake, which launched a New York Times bestselling book of the same name. ABOUT ANDERSON’S BOOKSHOPS: Sponsoring this upcoming program is Anderson’s Bookshops, specializing in book sales, author events, booksignings, and building a sense of community, learning and fun. The store has been helping Naperville readers for six generations. Based in downtown Naperville, the store has grown with the community. A second location is also open in downtown Downers Grove, at 5112 Main Street (630) 963-2665. A gift shop, Anderson’s Two-Doors East, at 111 W. Jefferson Ave., in Naperville, opened in the fall of 2009. And just this month, Anderson’s newest location in La Grange opened its doors at 26 S. La Grange Rd. (708) 582-6353. Key to Anderson’s success has been special author events, like the November 13 program with Rainn Wilson at Community Christian Church, Naperville. • CODE CHIC | September 2015

REINVENT YOUR WINNING WARDROBE Want to turn your fall wardrobe into something altogether amazing? Well, I’m here to help. Why not start with a rockin', tough girl leather jacket? Maybe pick a long, flowing cardigan sweater to pair with your skinny jeans and show your boyish charm? Let a piece of statement jewelry top off your look. Just make sure you mix things up, layer all you want, and then watch how easily this season’s little extras reinvent your wardrobe. Your secret code chic combination is as easy as 1,2,3 and 4. Start with the building blocks to a winning wardrobe. 1. crisp, white blouse 2. cuffed jeans 3. ankle boot 4. sensual wine lip color Show your unmistakable sense of style and street chic by adding the key silhouettes from your local boutiques. Up your cool factor by revealing your ankles. Pick a pixie pant or, better yet, cuff what ya got! Simply rolling your jeans two times multiplies your fashion sense, heightens your look and elongates your leg. This is a great way to look taller and thinner without the help of your doctor or personal trainer. Celeb star fashion was once easily obtained by adding the fashion scarf, but this season calls for a statement necklace for that VIP look. The soft silhouette takes a back seat to bold, chunky, glitzy savoir faire everywhere. Play with proportions. Skinny pants call for billowing tops and one key piece is the boyfriend cardigan. It’s effortlessly chic and gives you a casual, cool vibe. There’s one, absolute, foolproof fashion must have - cheetah print something. Cheetah is the new neutral and is the go-to add on accessory to most any outfit. It stands alone as an accent piece in a purse, scarf, or shoe. Tiny addition = major impact! My favorite way to modernize your look is to pick a new lip color. Let’s face it, it’s your face and smile that most notice first, so why not start with the best first impression? This season loosens the reigns on color and invites you to be bold. I’ve been working professionally with make up since I was a teen, as a career woman, and now mother of four. The best lipstick I’ve found is by MAC. The price point is friendly. The quality and lasting power are top notch. Pick up “Plumful”. It is a sheer, deep color with a shine. It’s a great way to add color and gloss in one simple stroke.
