LISLE MOM SHARES AVOCADO & SHRIMP CHOPPED SALAD JANUARY 2017 – A refreshingly healthy dish submitted by a Lisle mom who loves to try out new recipes. She found this at www.eatingwell.com. Submit your favorite recipes today at editorial@glancermagazine.com, Subject: Recipe Share. 5 tablespoons reduced-fat sour cream 3 tablespoons grapeseed oil or extra-virgin olive oil 3 tablespoons cider vinegar 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill 1 tablespoon minced shallot 2 cloves garlic, minced ¾ teaspoon dry mustard ¼ teaspoon kosher salt 1 pound raw shrimp (21-25 per pound), peeled and deveined 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 teaspoons finely grated lime zest ¼ teaspoon kosher salt ¼ teaspoon freshly ground pepper, plus more to taste 2 ears corn, husked4 cups chopped romaine lettuce ¾ cup finely chopped red cabbage ¾ cup diced red bell pepper ½ cup diced red onion ½ cup assorted cherry tomatoes, chopped ½ fennel bulb, halved again, thinly sliced1 avocado, diced 2 slices crispy cooked bacon, diced To prepare dressing: Puree the dressing ingredients in a food processor or blender until smooth. To prepare shrimp & salad: Preheat grill to medium or heat a grill pan over medium heat. Toss shrimp with 2 teaspoons oil, lime zest, salt and ¼ teaspoon pepper. Grill corn, turning occasionally, until slightly charred, 6 to 10 minutes. Grill the shrimp, turning once, until cooked through, 3 to 5 minutes total. Transfer corn and shrimp to a cutting board. Cut the kernels off the cob. Chop the shrimp into bite-size pieces. Combine lettuce, cabbage, bell pepper, onion, tomatoes, fennel, avocado and bacon in a large bowl. Add the shrimp, corn and dressing; toss to coat. Season with pepper. DIY grill basket: It’s best to use a grill basket when grilling small ingredients so they don’t fall into the fire. If you don’t have one, fold a 24-inch-long piece of heavy-duty foil in half and crimp up the edges to create a lip; this “basket” will prevent the food from sliding off the grates. - THE CHICAGO WINO | January 2017
BABY, IT’S COLD OUTSIDE Warm Up with Malbec! JANUARY 2017 – In the Windy City, weather is generally part of everyday discussion. How does it change so drastically in a day? How is it that 55 degrees can warrant shorts in the winter but a snowsuit in the summer? Dean Martin wasn’t kidding when he sang Baby, It’s Cold Outside during this time of year! When I’m this cold, I need a big bold red to warm up my bones and in this case some premium Malbec from Argentina will fit the bill. Salentein Reserve Malbec, 2014: This was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels then another 6 months in the bottle before they release it. I loved the aromas of dark fruits, dark chocolate, spice cake, clove and dried fruit. The flavors were incredibly soft and balanced with prune, leather, vanilla and tobacco. SRP of $19 Salentine Primum Malbec, 2013: This sexy wine was aged a total of 19 months in French oak barrels then another 12 months in the bottle before being released. Wow! This has aromas of super robust and bursting dark fruits – juicy blackberries, plums and vanilla. Upon tasting, I noted ripe and balanced sweet black fruits that carried though a certain power and elegance that I’ve not had in a while. Honestly speaking, this was one of the best wines I’ve had in quite some time. I could not get enough of this and yes, it made me feel warm and fuzzy inside. SRP of $65 – don’t let that scare you, sometimes you just need to treat yo’ self! Sláinte! #GlancerMagazine #DiningCabaret #TheChicagoWino #EricMcMillan #FeaturedBlog #January2017
- ARTS + ENTERTAINMENT | Fashion Guru Heads to Anderson's Bookshop In Naperville
COMING FRIDAY, JANUARY 13 – TV Personality Clinton Kelly Coming to Naperville for an Anderson’s Bookshop Event His role as a fashion consultant and writer led Clinton Kelly into a TV career on TLC network’s What Not to Wear, and then to ABC’s The Chew. New for the popular style guru is his book, I Hate Everyone, Except You. Early next year, Kelly is headed out on the road to share his personal story and meet fans. And among his book tour stops is Wentz Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave. on the campus of North Central College, in Naperville. Kelly will appear at Wentz Hall on Friday, January 13 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets for this event are available exclusively at ClintonKellyAndersons.brownpapertickets.com. This special event is offered by Anderson’s Bookshop in the heart of Naperville at 123 W. Jefferson Ave. ABOUT THE BOOK: Bestselling author and television host Clinton Kelly pens a hilariously candid, deliciously snarky collection of essays about his journey from awkward kid to slightly-less-awkward adult. Clinton Kelly is probably best known for teaching women how to make their butts look smaller. But in I Hate Everyone, Except You, he reveals some heretofore-unknown secrets about himself, like that he’s a finicky connoisseur of 1980s pornography, a disillusioned critic of New Jersey’s premier water parks, and perhaps the world’s least enthused high-school commencement speaker. Whether he’s throwing his baby sister in the air to jumpstart her cheerleading career or heroically rescuing his best friend from death by mud bath, Kelly leaps life’s social hurdles with aplomb. With his signature wit, he shares his unique ability to navigate the stickiest of situations, like deciding whether it’s acceptable to eat chicken wings with a fork on live television (spoiler: it’s not). Kelly delves into all these topics—and many more—in this thoroughly unabashedly frank and uproarious collection. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Clinton Kelly is best known as Emmy-award-winning moderator of The Chew on ABC, as well as cohost of the wildly popular makeover show, What Not to Wear. Originally from Port Jefferson Station, New York, Kelly now resides with his husband, Damon, and dog, Mary, in Manhattan and Connecticut. - CARING + SHARING | The Kindness Habit
A 4-STEP PROCESS FOR MAKING KINDNESS AN EVERYDAY HABIT IN 2017 Even Lady Gaga Says It’s The Right Thing To Do JANUARY 2017 – When Lady Gaga recently told her fans that kindness – not wealth and fame – is what creates harmony in the world she may have been on to something. Research has shown that being kind makes us happier and also is contagious, inspiring others to be kind as well. For example, one such study published in the Journal of Social Psychology linked performing acts of kindness to an increase in life satisfaction. That’s why as people make their resolutions for the coming New Year, they should make up their minds to commit purposeful acts of kindness every day, says Gabriella van Rij (www.gabriella.global), a kindness activist and author whose latest book is Watch Your Delivery. Making kindness a habit changes lives – your own life and others,” van Rij says. “I believe we’re born with innate kindness, but we’ve just forgotten about it because we’re always running. We’re just too busy doing other things and we need to remind ourselves to be kind.” She says we as a society have dropped the ball on human kindness and it’s time we picked it back up. “I truly believe that we are all born with innate kindness, but then the hand that feeds us or the environment makes us abandon it pretty fast,” van Rij says. “By the time we are 5, we have learned to compete and to strive for success. It’s time for a new measuring stick for success.” She says by following a four-step process, people can put a little more kindness in the world and quickly fall into the habit of committing kindness every day: • Be kind to yourself. It’s hard to have the patience to be kind to others if we can’t even take the time to be kind to ourselves. “This might seem selfish, but it’s not,” van Rij says. “By being kind to ourselves, we shape our attitude toward others.” • Answer rudeness with kindness. This one is difficult, van Rij acknowledges. “When someone is rude to you, the first thing you do is instantly react and not always in a positive way,” she says. “And the second thing you do is say it’s about me. They were nasty to me.” But van Rij says it’s not about you, it’s about the emotion. By answering rudeness with kindness, you diffuse the situation and there’s also a certain satisfaction in seeing the change in the attitude of the person who was rude. • Watch your delivery. The tone that accompanies your words is as important as what you are saying. Do you need to soften your tone? Does what you say sound more aggressive than what you mean? Body language also can send a message you didn’t intend, so be aware of your body language and your facial expressions. • Acknowledge kindness when you see it. When you acknowledge the kind acts you see, that person will be encouraged to continue to spread kindness. Acknowledging kindness in others also will serve as a reminder to you about how you can show kindness. “Unfortunately, one of the reasons we don’t always treat each other well is that we are a fear-based society, and fear only breeds more fear,” van Rij says. “But luckily there is an antidote because just as fear breeds more fear, I believe kindness grows more kindness.” ABOUT THE WRITER Gabriella van Rij (www.gabriella.global) is a speaker, author and activist whose latest book, Watch Your Delivery, explores how we often fail in communicating. She began her life as an orphan in Pakistan, and today is a frequent guest on TV and radio. She also is the author of I Can Find My Might. #CaringSharing #January2017 #GabriellavanRij
- CARING + SHARING | Local Residents In Need Given Cars
"DRIVEN TO CARE EVENT" Loaves & Fishes Community Services, in conjunction with Continental Motors Group, hosted the sixth annual “Driven to Care” event in December, continuing their collective tradition of giving back to the community. Together, these partners brought joy to eight area families this holiday season by presenting them with the wheels they need to get back on the road and back on track to improving their lives. At the event, each deserving family received a quality used vehicle to drive off of the lot! The Weinberger family, owners of Continental Motors Group, made a huge presentation of the vehicles, each adorned with a big bow. Paperwork, title, insurance was all previously taken care of so they were able to drive off the lot as new owners. What a wonderful gift! Simply amazing. -Submitted Pictured: A deserving single mother, who is raising six children just outside Chicago, receives the keys to her new vehicle at the “Driven to Care” event, Thursday, December 8. - HERO MOM | Shelly LeGere, Elmhurst
FOUNDER OF THE ANNIE LEGERE FOUNDATION INC. TO THE MOON AND BACK It was just a year ago that 13 year old, Annie LeGere, passed away as a result of anaphylactic shock due to an unknown allergic reaction. It was a typically sleepover with friends. A little after midnight she called her mother experiencing shortness of breath, coughing, and not feeling well. Her symptoms became worse and 911 was called. Annie went into respiratory arrest and 9 days later passed away. As far as the family knew at the time, Annie did not have any allergies, so this was a shock to all. Annie was a happy thriving teenager with a large circle of friends, a zest for life; summer sleepovers; Camp Tecumseh; Cub’s Third Baseman, Kris Bryant (#17); and a love for God. Everyone needed something to grasp onto to move forward again after Annie’s sudden death. Annie’s mom, Shelly, decided to begin The Annie LeGere Foundation, Inc. To the Moon and Back on the day of Annie’s funeral luncheon to promote allergy awareness and education. The goals of the foundation are: 1) Promote allergy awareness and research. 2) Educate parents and children on the symptoms of allergic reactions and what to do when they occur. 3) Work with the community to make it mandatory for “first responders” and schools to carry and stock epinephrine auto-injectors. 4) Support training of first responders and school staff in the use of epinephrine auto-injectors. See updates on the proposed Annie Legrere law. “The foundation keeps me going ... I love my Annie, miss her so much… I find it hard to breathe,” Shelly says. “My hope is to save many lives and have no other family endure this horrible tragedy.” Allergy families live in fear because death is a reality – Shelly’s new reality. She pleads for public compassion and understanding of this when people feel inconvenienced by peanut free tables and the like. - BOBBY BROWN Coming to Naperville for New Memoir, Every Little Step, June 17
MUSIC LEGEND BOBBY BROWN SET FOR BOOKSIGNING EVENT AT ANDERSON'S BOOKSHOP An icon of American music has penned his memoir, and Naperville area fans will be able to meet the talented author himself on Friday, evening, June 17 at 7:00 p.m. Bobby Brown, who first hit the world of pop culture as a member of New Edition, went on to break out on his own Grammy-winning merits, and later became known through his marriage to Whitney Houston and their family life with daughter Bobbi Christina. Brown’s new book, Every Little Step, will be celebrated with fans on Friday, June 17 at Anderson’s Bookshop, 123 W. Jefferson Ave. in the heart of Naperville. ABOUT THE BOOK: n Every Little Step, Brown will for the first time tell the full story of his life and set the record straight, particularly about his relationship with Whitney Houston. Bobby Brown has been one of the most compelling American artists of the past 30 years, a magnetic and talented figure who successfully crossed over many musical genres, including R&B and hip hop, as well as the mainstream. In the late 1980s, the former front man of New Edition had a wildly successful solo career—especially with the launch of Don't Be Cruel—garnering multiple hits on the Billboard top ten list, as well as several Grammy, American Music, and Soul Train awards. But Brown put his career on hold to be with the woman he loved—American music royalty Whitney Houston. The marriage between Brown and Houston was perhaps the most closely watched and talked about marriage of the 1990s—a pairing that obsessed the public and the gossip industry. Now, for the first time, the world will be able to hear the truth from the mouth of America's “bad boy" himself. Raw and powerful, Every Little Step is the story of a man who has been on the top of the mountain and in the depths of the valley and who is now finally ready to talk about his career and family life, from the passion and the excess to his creative inspirations and massive musical success. On the process of writing this book, Bobby says, “Right after I signed on to write my story, I went through one of the most agonizing traumas I had ever experienced with the death of my daughter. But I was surprised by how therapeutic it was to work on this project, to look at the entire arc of my life and to realize that although there has been considerable pain, I have also been incredibly blessed. I hope my fans and other readers of this book will be entertained by this trip into the crazy, exciting, fascinating world of Bobby Brown. And I hope they will feel that I have been as honest and open with them in these pages as I have tried to be my entire life." ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Bobby Brown is a singer, songwriter, dancer, producer, and actor. He lives in Los Angeles, California, with his wife and children. ABOUT ANDERSON'S BOOKSHOPS: Sponsoring this upcoming program is Anderson's Bookshop, specializing in book sales, author events, booksignings, and building a sense of community, learning and fun. - NEW CAMP AT NAPER SETTLEMENT Attention Aspiring Engineers, Architects, Scientists or Coders, Grades
BECOME A "MAKER" AT OPERATION INNOVATION SUMMER DAY CAMP Naper Settlement is connecting the past to the present with an all-new STEM camp that helps kids find their inner “maker.” Aspiring engineers, architects, scientists or coders will interact with today’s experts during Operation Innovation, a camp that takes children grades 4 to 6 on a history adventure with hands-on activities. Imaginations will run wild with interactive experiences during this summer day camp that will be held from June 27 to 29 at Naper Settlement. Hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with an extended drop-off hour with activities from 8 to 9 a.m. Campers will explore the evolution of innovation by learning how tradesmen, craftspeople and farmers of the past used science and technology in their everyday lives. The past will link to the present as campers meet modern-day pioneers—professionals from the fields of engineering, architecture, technology, communications and agriculture. “Naper Settlement is thrilled to offer this new, unique STEM camp where kids will bridge the past to the present with fun, hands-on learning experiences.” Naper Settlement Learning Experiences Coordinator Anna DiCosola said. “Kids will learn how innovations in science and technology have shaped our world today.” Each day, the camp will explore a different science- or technology-based theme. On the first day, campers will delve into engineering and architecture by constructing a miniature log cabin and by visiting the Blacksmith for a trades lesson in metal. Naperville Public Library will bring a 3D printer onsite to create a miniature plastic figurine. Kelsey Wuthrich and Milica Stojsavljevic, engineering and architecture representatives from Wight & Company, will speak to the campers about their professions and share the skills required for their modern-day jobs. The day will end with campers constructing mini beasts using Theo Jansen’s STRANDBEEST Mini-maker Kits. Day two will explore communications technology by writing and sending “snail mail” through the Post Office. In the afternoon, campers will create their own interactive stories using Scratch Programming. Naperville Community Television will bring their “Tour the Truck” program to Naper Settlement, where campers can see television production in action. On day three, campers will dig up history by planting a garden the old-fashioned way with rakes, hoes and water buckets. Kids will learn about the history of farming and innovations in agriculture. Kara Kinney, Executive Director of the DuPage County Farm Bureau, and a local farmer will lead an interactive lesson and discussion on how science and technology is used in farming today. “Agriculture provides the food you eat, the gas you put in your cars and the clothes you wear on your back. The DuPage County Farm Bureau is dedicated to educating consumers and children on the products and the vast opportunities within agriculture.” DuPage County Farm Bureau Executive Director Kara Kinney said. “Operation Innovation will give campers the opportunity to learn first-hand about the importance of agriculture in our daily lives.” The program is limited to 25 campers and the fee is $150 per camper. To register, call (630) 420-6010. In addition to Operation Innovation, Naper Settlement offers one-day to five-day Camp Naper Summer Day Camps through Aug. 5 with new extended hours.
