Visitors are invited to enjoy six nights dancing under the stars with some cold drinks, delicious food and amazing tribute music. The concert series will take place from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights on June 15-16, July 20-21 and Aug. 17-18 at Naper Settlement located at 523 S. Webster St. in Naperville. I’m most excited for the Paul Simon tribute night performed by Old Shoe who will be backed by a full horn section called the Low Down Brass Band.” Naper Nights 2018 Music Lineup June 15: Wall of Denial, 6:30 p.m.; The Pettybreakers, 8 p.m. June 16: Tom Thumb’s Band, 6 p.m.; Old Shoe featuring Low Down Brass Band, 7:45 p.m. July 20: The Fortunate Sons, 6 p.m.; Turn the Page, 8 p.m. July 21: Simply Elton with The Brown Dirt Cowboys, 6 p.m.; Natural Wonder, 7:45 p.m. Aug. 17: Rose Hill Revival, 6 p.m.; Chicken Fried, 8 p.m. Aug. 18: Planet Groove, 6 p.m.; Bluffett, 8 p.m. Naper Nights will kick off on Friday, June 15 with Stevie Ray Vaughan cover band, Wall of Denial. Capturing audiences since 2011 the group is made up of talented musicians, including Gary Stratton who has performed Stevie’s music for over 20 years. Headlining the night will be The Pettybreakers, the nation’s premier tribute to Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. Opening on Saturday, June 16 will be Tom Thumb’s Band who revisits the music of Bob Dylan with a 6-piece electric band. The evening’s headliner will be Chicago-based Americana roots rock band, Old Shoe featuring Low Down Brass Band, performing the best of Paul Simon. The band began performing Paul Simon after playing “Graceland” in its entirety at their annual music festival, Shoe Fest, and receiving such a great response from the audience. “We are an original band that enjoys learning influential music,” said Old Shoe’s singer and guitarist, Matt Robinson. “The audience will get a fresh take on [Paul Simon’s] songs, and while it won’t sound exactly like the album, we’ll be sure to do it justice and honor all the important parts. It’ll be fun and lively and dance-y.” July will cover the best in rock and roll from the 60s to the 70s. Friday, July 20 will begin with Naper Night’s favorite The Fortunate Sons, using original vintage gear and instruments, accurate costumes and spot-on musical performances to recreate the best Creedence Clearwater Revival songs. Following the CCR tribute will be Turn The Page which faithfully recreates all the classic Bob Seger hits such as “Old Time Rock and Roll,” “Night Moves,” and “Against the Wind.” Visitors will dance the night away on Saturday, July 21, beginning with an Elton John tribute, Simply Elton with The Brown Dirt Cowboys, who have the perfect blend of great vocals and pianistic excellence. Headlining the night will be Natural Wonder, a Stevie Wonder tribute led by #1 Billboard artist and producer, Gabriel Bellow who is sure to give the audience a memorable and energetic live experience. Since the band’s inception in 2012, Natural Wonder has wowed audiences across the country and recreates a performance that is very similar to the colossal talent that is Stevie Wonder, playing hits such as “Signed, Sealed, Delivered,” “Isn’t She Lovely,” and “Sir Duke.” “I grew up with Stevie Wonder,” said Bellow, who portrays Wonder on stage. “My father had three or four of his albums, and when I started collecting my own records I made sure to add him to my collection. He’s that perfect marriage of musical and lyrical depth, it can be fun, emotional, happy or sad.” August will wrap up the Naper Nights Concert Series with four incredible bands. Friday, Aug. 18 will begin with Rose Hill Revival, a Chicago-area band with a mutual love for the Allman Brothers; followed by Chicken Fried, a tribute band to the increasingly popular Zac Brown Band. Don’t miss the last night of the series on Saturday, Aug. 18 with a high-energy tribute band playing all the hits from the 60s to today, Planet Groove. Bluffett, a tribute to the legendary Jimmy Buffett & Coral Reefer Band, will bring “Margaritaville” to Naper Settlement with beach-themed props and costuming. The high-energy and spot-on musical performance recreated by Larry Pearson will be one performance visitors will not want to miss. Be sure to show up early to catch performances from School of Rock’s local musicians in June and August as they welcome guests to Naper Nights each night from 5 to 5:45 p.m. Details regarding Naper Night’s children’s activities, community partners as well as food and beverage vendors will be announced later this spring. • HOME + GARDEN | Unique Home Designers And How to Find Them

IT'S TIME FOR SPRING HOME UPDATING, WE CAN HELP When it comes to designing your dream kitchen or your dream remodeling project, it sometimes is daunting to figure out where to start to find the right designer for the project. The most important aspect in finding the designer for you is to find one you connect with. “Having a long list of certificates and licenses can help, but if you don’t connect with the designer, those are just pieces of paper that don’t really ensure a good fit,” says Jacki Finstrom of JAX Designs, who has been designing creative spaces for sixteen years. “What one client needs is different than the next, and a designer should be able to cater to each one.” Here are a couple of ideas to help you find the right fit. SHOWROOMS Many larger design companies have a staff of designers that showcase their creative work in their showrooms. Take some time to visit these facilities and check out the different styles of work they have done. See our 7 Spectacular Showrooms to Marvel at listed on page 46 of this month’s issue. PORTFOLIOS For those designers that don’t have large showrooms, they usually have portfolios of pictures from past jobs they can show you. They can also walk you through their inspiration and creative path for each project. These conversations can help you get a feel of their personality and if you would work well with them. FACEBOOK Many designers and design companies take their portfolio to social media. Facebook pages are stock full of pictures that you can peruse on your own time before you even make your first appointment. REFERRALS This is probably the best indication if you will be happy with your designer. If your friends have worked with them previously and had a great experience. Nowadays, it doesn’t even have to be someone you know. A shout out for referrals to your subdivision Facebook page or one of the several mommy/parent Facebook pages in the community will most likely give you a good selection to start with. Once you have found a few designers you would like to consider, remember it is always best to get three or four quotes and design ideas for the same project. As designers’ ideas vary, so do their prices. Don’t expect them to leave copies of their design plans, that is just a smart way for them to safeguard their work. “A unique designer is one that gets excited about every opportunity and looks for an innovative approach to a design challenge,” says Finstrom. “If you find a designer that gets excited about every project, keep them around!” -Mindy Kyle #GlancerMagazine #HomeGraden #March12018 #MindyKyle

  • MUSEUM DISPLAY | Death In DuPage Has Residents Intrigued

DEATH IN DUPAGE  On Display through June 24, 2018 Dig into historic death culture of DuPage County. Explore codes of dress, mourning traditions, and the way death and dying were understood by the people of the past. From the settlement period, through the Civil War, and into the last years of the Victorian Era, this exhibition invites visitors to take a look at the material culture left behind. The way modern American society chooses to deal with death is often by avoiding the topic altogether. Death in DuPage is the thrilling, upcoming exhibit at the DuPage County Historical Museum (102 E. Wesley St., Wheaton, IL) that will attempt to pull the curtain back on America’s death rituals and practices – something long considered to be a private affair – only to be known by undertakers and to be hidden from the public.Museum assistant Morgan Valenzuela explains, “The exhibit explores historical culture, materials and beliefs around death in the county. For many, it’s difficult to talk about… My hope is that this exhibit offers visitors an opportunity for thought and conversation. ”Thanks to modern medicine and the increased popularity of hospitals, death and illness is something that can be concealed and suspended. It is easy to forget that in the time of the DuPage settlers, fewer than 15% of the deaths occurred away from the home. Dying in one’s home was paired to other death rites, such as the family being there to witness and record last words.Furthermore, Victorians observed stricter expectations for the family of the deceased. There were guidelines in place for how long someone should mourn or how they should deal with the body. This structure stems from the Victorian fear of death being compared to a contagious illness. Today, most people die away from home, and an increasing amount (a projected 54.3% by 2020) opt for cremation, over the more traditional open casket and burial of yesteryear.“Looking back is fascinating but sometimes uncomfortable. To think about how we, as a community, used to handle mortality and mourning might inspire some visitors to consider how we handle them today,” Valenzuela said.Death in DuPage will be on display through June 4, 2018. Webster St., Naperville. Gates are open from 5 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $15 adults, $10 youth ages 4-12, free admission for children under 4 and members. Fortunate Sons is known for creating an authentic CCR experience using original vintage instruments and spot-on musical ability. Headlining will be the popular Dave Matthews tribute band, Trippin Billies. Composed of some of Chicago’s best musicians, they moved quickly from the bar band circuit and into concert settings. Touring the Midwest for over 20 years, Trippin Billies emulates the Dave Matthews Band concert experience by playing all the hits from albums such as “Crash” and “Everyday.” “We like to play a song off of every album to keep everyone happy,” said Trippin Billies’ lead singer, Grant Chinouth. “The improve style of the Dave Matthews Band is so great when you’re a tribute band. I know it’s fun to sit, but we want everyone standing and dancing along.” On Saturday, June 17, enjoy the birth, near death and resurrection of rock n’ roll when the Neverly Brothers will perform music from legends such as Elvis and Buddy Holly. The Neverly Brothers are known for rocking out on stage and getting the crowd singing along to the classics, such as Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” and The Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction.” Beatles fans will relive a classic when American English performs the album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” in full for its 50th anniversary, along with a second set of post Beatles’ solo songs by the fab four. Having traveled all over the world, American English finds joy in transcending people into a time where the Beatles made an incredible influence on music. “People know we aren’t the Beatles, but they love being a part of the illusion and getting a glimpse of the impact and longevity of their music,” said American English’s Tom Gable, who performs as Ringo Starr. Gable says it’s no easy feat playing albums in their entirety, but he loves coming back to Naper Settlement, because the crowd in Naperville just “seems to get it.” “[Naper Settlement] is one of the gigs you wait for,” said Gable. “The real show is the people. When you go in and play a specific album you’re rolling the dice, but the people in Naperville are very receptive.” Be sure to show up early to catch performances from School of Rock’s best local musicians as they welcome guests to Naper Nights both nights. There are also plenty of activities for kids to do in the children’s activities area. Budding artists can paint a masterpiece, courtesy of Pinot’s Palette, learn how to break a board with PRO Martial Arts, or practice their hula hooping skills with Lil J’s Bohemia. Real Life Fitness will be here Saturday night to help kids work up a sweat. “The children’s activities create a one-of-a-kind environment for families at the event,” said Naper Settlement’s Special Events and Large Scale Rentals Coordinator, Adison Glick. “Where else can Mom and Dad catch a show and have a drink, while the kids get to paint, karate chop, and hula hoop to their hearts content?” Naper Settlement is partnering with Independence Winter Color Guard this month. Proceeds from the tip jars at the beverage tent will benefit this great organization. Beverage sponsors are Bell’s Brewery and Rodney Strong Vineyards.
