  • PEDIS-n-PASSPORTS | The Magic of Mackinac Island & Mission Point Resort

THIS BEAUTIFUL AND EXPANSIVE 18-ACRE SETTING HAS IT ALL We recently headed to Mackinac Island for our very first time. From the moment we stepped off the ferry, we felt like we had landed in a magical fairy tale land in the Caribbean. Choosing the right hotel for our stay was just as significant as the trip itself, and honestly it was the resort, which in fact, allowed our family to reconnect and experience the perfect balance of tranquility and quality family-fun-time we greatly needed. In fact, after now touring Mackinac Island and seeing many of its hotels, Mission Point Resort will forever be our only choice. Besides the expansive 18-acre setting and sheer elegance of the resort, the entire staff was so welcoming and helpful, making our stay flawless. Mission Point is a seasonal resort open from the end of April through the end of October. The feel of the resort is charming, elegant, cozy and relaxed. You will see families sitting by the fireplaces playing Backgammon and cards, reading books from the library, or sunning on the Great Lawn with its breathtaking views. The Resort has 241 rooms, three full restaurants, a beautiful wine bar, an adorable coffee shop and cafe, a health club and gorgeous full service spa, a turn of the century movie theater, an arcade, bike rentals, an outdoor pool and hot tub, a kids club, an 18-hole-executive putting course, tennis courts, a classy boutique, and a massive 38,000 square feet of event space. Mission Point Resort holds close to a hundred weddings per year and we can clearly see why. This is a dream wedding location. In fact, Brooke said when she marries, this will be the venue. It is also the ideal spot for corporate gatherings and conferences--talk about an unforgettable event for guests/clients. There is just too much to list about this resort, but we hope you see that there is truly something special for everyone here. During our stay, we biked the entire island, experienced the most beautiful sunrise kayak tour, played golf and tennis, hiked, visited Fort Mackinac and Arch Rock, ate more fudge and ice cream than we have in an entire year, and enjoyed the beautiful lilacs bursting in full bloom all over the island. To get full details of Mackinac Island and Mission Point Resort, head to pedisnpassports.com . Without question, Mackinac Island is our favorite US destination and Trip Advisor just named it the #1 Summertime destination in the US. Why we waited so long to visit, I’ll never understand. • DR. MOM | Meet Dr. Jiana Pahigianis Panos, DDS

INTRODUCING WEST SUBURBAN DR. MOM–Dr. Jiana Pahigianis Panos, DDS Working at two dental offices, caring for both children and adults, while also having three children of your own can be seen as a handful to many. Dr. Jiana Pahigianis Panos, DDS, of Advanced Family Dental and Orthodontics, PC in Lockport and Tic Tac Tooth Pediatric Dentistry in Naperville is continuously working hard to balance her life between work and family. I interviewed Dr. Panos to get an inside look into her everyday life with work and caring for her three children; Vasi, Eleni, and George “A typical work day for me starts out early by getting the kids ready and dropped off at school then heading into work,” Dr. Panos began. Working at Tic Tac Tooth on Mondays and one Saturday a month and Advanced Family Dental and Orthodontics on Wednesdays and Thursdays. “I get home at dinner time and am able to spend a couple of hours with my husband and kids and preparing for the next day,” she continued. With busy work days, there are still busy days off for a mother of three. “My days off are spent running errands, taking kids to school and activities, and preparing for the rest of the week,” Dr. Panos said. The dream of being a dentist wasn’t always there for Dr. Panos. “As a little girl, I wanted to be a teacher,” she explained. “My uncle was our family dentist and he used to ask my sisters and I who was going to be a dentist when we grew up and I remember thinking to myself “Not me, that’s boring!” I was wrong,” she joked. Dr. Panos became interested in becoming a dentist at her high school graduation party. She told me a story of her family friend attending the party explaining to her what a root canal was. “With his interesting explanation and my love for science, I decided to pursue dentistry at this point,” Dr. Panos said. “Dentistry allows me to bring together all of the things I love: science, creativity, problem solving, and most of all, providing an important and needed service to people,” she explained with passion. Dr. Panos stabilizes the “teeter tooter” of life with children and demanding work with patience, compassion, and love for both her occupation and her family. • GLEN ELLYN MOMS VILLAGE | Bike Riding Together as a Family

5 TIPS ON HOW TO START BIKE RIDING AS A FAMILY When it comes to summer fun no day is complete without a family bike ride. Trust me when I say our family has had it’s share of melt downs and side of the road tantrums but it hasn’t stopped us from continuing on with the summer tradition of biking in the burbs. We are fortunate to have so many great places to explore like The Prairie Path that stretches 61 miles and goes through the heart of Glen Ellyn and Wheaton. Also, the Morton Arboretum with 9 miles of trails plus bike rentals for all ages and stages. As with any adventure it helps to have the proper gear. The Bike Hub in Glen Ellyn is your one stop shop to making sure everyone is taken care of from buying the right bike to helping with tune ups and repairs. Prairie Path Cycles in Winfield also offer repairs, bike fittings and hosts a variety of rides and racing events. Here are a few tips to help get your family on the right path! 1. Safety and comfort first! Bring your bikes in for a yearly maintenance check and fitting. Check to make sure helmets fit properly. Always have a small tool kit and a portable tire pump on hand and know how to do quick fix its. Spokes in Wheaton and Naperville offers a hands-on maintenance class during the off season. 2. Check the weather and know your route. Weather changes quickly and having the essentials will help make your trip more enjoyable. Start off with small distances and keep it simple especially with younger kids. Make plenty of stops and let the slowest rider set the pace. If your family is just starting off find a bike path that doesn’t require crossing busy intersections and don’t ride at peak times. This will help with new and less experienced riders. Start to finish is always important to kids and mapping it out as a family will help with questions like how much longer, are we there yet, and where are we going! 3. Pack a backpack . Bring plenty of water, snacks, sunglasses and sunscreen. If you plan on stopping make sure to have bike locks for everyone. 4. Know the rules of the road. Learn hand signals but don’t assume that everyone knows what they mean. Watch for vehicles coming out of driveways or turning corners. Alert pedestrians and other riders that you are near by saying, “Passing on your left,” or use a bike bell. 5. Have fun and enjoy this special time as a family. For kids riding in a bike trailer let them bring a camera to snap pictures along the way. With summer in full swing and more kids plugged into their devices it’s more important then ever to break away and reconnect as a family. Trust me when I say the small amount of whining will be well worth it! ABOUT THE BLOGGER Glen Ellyn Mom’s Village is a local blog that was created by resident Alicia Donovan. She is devoted to being a mom who inspires others and loves connecting and creating a sense of community for all. • PAMPERED FOR A DAY | A Day of Beauty at The Zazu Exchange

RELAX, REPLENISH, REWARD I’m the kind of gal that prefers adventure versus relaxing. I bite my nails, color my own hair, and am super ticklish; therefore, hate massages and pedicures. So, when Zazu Salon & Day Spa invited me to experience their new brand "The Zazu Exchange" in Naperville, I couldn’t imagine what I would enjoy from the spa or salon menu. After receiving my very first facial, which included a masking exfoliation activated by steam system, I quietly giggled. You see, as I was lying peacefully in a dimly lit room surrounded by candles and mediation music, I realized what I had been missing for the past 47 years. I never thought I would say I love the spa life, but I’m sold. I next moved to the salon and had my hair professionally shampooed and deeply conditioned, then sat placidly while my hair was skillfully blown out and styled. I felt like a model. My hair looked stunning – yes, I just said that out loud and complimented myself. I felt amazing! Now I know why women love spa days! Now that I am hooked, I am fortunate that Zazu Salon & Day Spa is offering a reward program. Anybody who walks into the store is able to earn free services, as long as they purchase products. You don't need to sign up for anything, you just need to purchase at least $30 worth of retail and you earn a free service! Each customer can earn 1 voucher each day that can be used for personal use or given to a friend! What’s also cool is that they have extensive services for men and women, unique bridal niceties, super-duper affordable services when using their Junior Stylists and The White Buffalo Barbershop is located just upstairs with sports channels, beer, and classic rock music! -Kristen Kucharski #GlancerMagazine #TheZazuExchange #HealthWellness #StyleBeauty #Naperville

  • HEALTHY TECH, DUPAGE | The Latest Fitness Tech Trends

LOCAL FITNESS EXPERTS SHARE ON WHAT’S  HOT IN TECHNOLOGY FOR HEALTH & FITNESS DUPAGE COUNTY– Paige Waehner, Certified Personal Trainer with Get Fit With Paige in Glen Ellyn says we've come a long way from using scales as a means to determine fitness and health; from basic heart rate monitors to smart watches and fitness trackers, now we can learn so much more about our bodies on a daily basis. “For most people, seeing their progress happen, whether it's a number on a watch or a progress report at the end of the week, it motivates them to keep going on a daily basis,” she says. “Having this information gives you so many more ways to set goals. Instead of just weight loss, which is something that happens over a long period of time, they can focus on the steps they need to take to reach that goal; taking more steps, eating fewer calories, exercising more, etc. I think fitness technology will evolve to the point where we can track even more information about our bodies and exercise and more importantly, our overall health.” Julie Kocher-Zinkus, Founder of Flexible Fitness in Wheaton relies heavily on technology to foster client success, using websites like PTontheNet to create workouts with photos and video descriptions, as well as using video conferencing like Zoom and Skype, in addition to Apps like Voxer for additional coaching, accountability, motivation, while also delivering whole food nutrition foundations to her clients. Kathryn Doyle, Life Coach and Personal Trainer of Kathryn The Trainer in Naperville agrees that technology creates an easier path to accountability. “My clients love the ease of walking into their basement and simply opening their computer. Clients can have dinner cooking and laundry going, or kids in the other room and never miss a session,” she says. “I also support a lot of executives that work from home and/or travel for work. For people with work at home, our sessions are just another appointment blocked out for their day with no commute. The executives that I train love that we can work right from their hotel room on the road via Facetime or Skype.” These three local fitness experts share their favorite websites, blogs, and social media sites for various tips: FITNESS TIPS: www.AceFitness.org NUTRITION GUIDELINES: www.instagram.com/cartergood ; www.3fatchicks.com; RECIPES:  www.skinnytaste.com ; www.eatingwell.com ; www.choosemyplate.gov CALORIE TRACKING: w ww.MyFitnessPal.com ; www.LoseIt.com OTHER:  www.trainerize.com Technology can sometimes be the cause and scapegoat for people being more sedentary, but it can also motivate us to be more active, ultimately having a huge impact on our health. –Kristen Kucharski #GlancerMagazine #HealthWellness #KristenKucharski #July2018DuPage #DuPageCounty #Wheaton #Naperville #GlenEllyn
