SUMMER FUN Well, summer is finally here and if you’re family is anything like mine, you’ve been waiting a long time for it’s arrival. Now that the kids are out of school and the days are getting longer, there are so many fun things to do together. From packing your calendar with festival favorites to lounging with your Glancer Magazine poolside– you and yours won’t get bored if you reside within Chicago’s western suburbs, that’s for sure. Some of our festival favorites include Naperville’s Ribfest (www.ribfest.net ) and Eyes to Skies Fest in Lisle ( www.eyestotheskies.org ), which both take place over 4th of July weekend. Ribfest has some fabulous musical entertainment this year including Sheryl Crow, Lee Brice and Gin Blossoms. Eyes to the Skies will be featuring some amazing musical acts as well, but my favorite attention grabber at this event is no doubt the hot air balloons that launch throughout the 3-day festival. They are simply breathtaking! Having grown up in Lisle, the 4th of July was always my favorite weekend of the year! Kicking it off with the parade where I marched proudly with my softball team, then some swim time with friends at Lisle Pool (now Sea Lion Aquatic Park), finishing it off with family as we watched the fireworks on the hill at Lisle Fest. So many memories! Another family favorite of ours is the Sugar Grove Corn Boil taking place July 28-31. Filled with all things fun including food vendors, musical entertainment, a carnival and more, area families will love that this festival has free entry + free entertainment. Other great events happening this summer include Taste of Wheaton, June 2-5; Swedish Days in Geneva, June 21-26; Rotary Grove Fest in Downers Grove, June 23-26; Glancer Magazine’s Splash of Color Annual Celebration, July 13; Jazz In Glen Ellyn, July 16; Naperville Woman’s Club 57th Annual Fine Art Fair, July 9 & 10 and many more! We hope you enjoy this issue filled with all things “summer fun” throughout the western suburbs. Enjoy your summer and thanks for reading! Lindy Kleivo Publisher/Editor #June2016

GET TO KNOW LISLE EYES TO SKIES BALLOONER AL VLZANY OF WESTERN SPRINGS The Lisle Eyes to the Skies festival has grown dramatically since it started more than 30 years ago and attracts about 70,000 each year. Highlights include everything from fireworks, to the carnival, to incredible musical performances; but, the emphasis of course is daily launches of hot air balloons and a balloon glow. Al Vlzany has been assisting balloon landings since 1992 and has worked as a balloon crew member since 2012. He then passed his checkride for his own balloon license, and by 2015 was chairperson of the balloon field selecting the shape balloons, making arrangements for pilots, supervising the tether rides, and overall general operations. He loves hot air balloons and enjoys flying his own in and around Minooka and Kankakee. When people ask him about flying in a balloon, he says the experience is hard to describe since there is no sensation of movement. “When you are in a balloon several hundred or thousand feet above the ground, it is hard to describe how you got there,” he says. “The ground just gets further away. In any other aircraft there is a sensation of movement.” Summer is the perfect time to fly his gliders by day and his hot air balloon by night! Photos Submitted #NeighbortoKnow #June2016

OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME FOR 8-YEAR-OLD PLAINFIELD GIRL: CUBS 'BAT GIRL' Maggie Meyers of Plainfield spent the first nine days of her life in Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit and later underwent pediatric heart surgery. Now she’s a happy, healthy 8-year-old who has the opportunity of a lifetime: Serving as Honorary Bat Kid for the Chicago Cubs. Maggie will be the Honorary Bat Kid at the April 28 game against the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field. Throughout the Cubs' season, Advocate Health Care provides young patients the opportunity to be Honorary Bat Kids for a game. This is just one way that Advocate gives back to its patients, families, and communities. Born March 11, 2008, Maggie developed an irregular heart beat shortly after birth and was admitted to Good Samaritan Hospital’s Level III neonatal intensive care, where her mother, Leanne Meyers, has worked as a registered nurse since 2001. Doctors diagnosed Maggie with Wolfe-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome, a congenital heart problem, and supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), an abnormal heart rhythm. At age 5, she underwent cardiac ablation surgery at Advocate Children’s Hospital-Oak Lawn. Maggie is now a healthy second grader at Eagle Pointe Elementary School in Plainfield. She will attend the Major League Baseball game with her parents, Tim and Leanne Meyers, her brother, Peyton Meyers, and her grandfather, Gerald Meyers. “I am grateful to Good Samaritan Hospital for the chance to be a bat girl at the Cubs game,” Maggie said. “I can’t wait!” Dr. Rajeev Dixit was one of the neonatologists who cared for Maggie when she was in the NICU. “Maggie’s come a long way,” Dixit said. “It’s a privilege to take care of the child of someone you work with.” #SuburbanTriumph

  • COSLEY ZOO RUN FOR THE ANIMALS Saturday, June 4 In Wheaton

SUPPORT LOCAL SPECIES AT COSLEY ZOO RUN FOR THE ANIMALS 5K/10K Cosley Zoo (1356 N. Gary Ave. in Wheaton) is animal after magnificent animal, and the annual Cosley Zoo Run for the Animals 5K/10K and half-mile Zippity Zoo Run on Saturday, June 4, 7:30-9:30A are mile after magnificent mile. Marking its 35th year, the run is one of the zoo’s biggest regular fundraisers, supporting the development and renovation of its exhibits and the superb stewardship of its 150-plus animals representing more than 60 native Illinois species. For the first time, the Chicago Area Runners Association named the event a 2016 Runners’ Choice Circuit Race, which includes such other storied events as the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and the Fleet Feet Sports Soldier Field 10 Mile. This recognition reflects the race’s local heritage. “The Run for the Animals is the granddaddy of the Wheaton Park District’s four races, beginning 35 years ago before there were many for people to choose from,” said Sue Wahlgren, director of Cosley Zoo. “The run has also established itself as one that is very well organized with wonderful volunteers, providing runners with a great experience year after year.” It’s the run’s special purpose that boosts it above others, though. “Last but not least is the reason people run: the animals at Cosley Zoo,” she said. “I believe knowing the money comes back to a great facility that serves so many people and provides excellence in animal care is a great motivator.” Indeed, Cosley Zoo was accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) last September for the fourth consecutive time, continuing a tradition started in 2000 with its first accreditation. Nationwide, fewer than 10% of USDA-licensed animal exhibitors earn it. Because of this, it’s long been recognized as the national gold standard for animal care and welfare. The rigorous accreditation process involves a meticulous onsite inspection by trained zoo professionals and an interview of top officials at a formal hearing of AZA’s Accreditation Commission. This process must be repeated every five years to regain accreditation. “There really is no such thing as re-accreditation,” said Wahlgren. “It is like starting over each time. You don’t get any ‘passes’ because you were accredited previously.” The Cosley Foundation, Inc.—whom the run’s proceeds benefit—helps the zoo achieve accreditation by developing its facilities and services, Wahlgren said. “The foundation has been responsible for every capital project at the zoo since 1987 when we constructed the Vern Kiebler Learning Center. As one of the foundation’s biggest annual fundraisers, the Run for the Animals is critical to the success of the zoo,” she said. Those capital projects include the bobcat exhibit that opened in 2012 at the zoo’s north end, the adjacent rabbit and chicken exhibits, and the clinic that allows the zoo to provide topnotch care for its animals onsite. Each year, the Run for the Animals attracts over 2,500 runners, joggers, walkers, and zoo supporters, many of whom have participated and visited the zoo for decades. “Many in this area have grown up coming to the zoo and are now bringing their own children,” said Natasha Fischer, Education Manager. “We have a wonderfully loyal base of supporters who help the zoo in many ways throughout the year, including buying their Christmas trees and pumpkins here as well as participating in the Run for the Animals.” Both race routes start at the corner of Seminary Avenue and Main Street at 7:30A and wind through residential Wheaton. The 10K route makes a loop through Northside Park. It’s not only adult athletes getting their weekend workout and supporting the zoo. Kids can dash through the half-mile Zippity Zoo Run, which kicks off at the corner of Seminary Avenue and Main Street, turns east on Franklin Street, heads south on Scott Street, and finishes westward at its starting line. The Zippity Zoo Run begins at 8:45A. Overall winners and age division awards will be given for the 5K and 10K. All Zippity Zoo participants will receive an award at the finish line. Registration is available at cosleyzoo.org/events. The Cosley Zoo Run for the Animals 5K/10K is supported by Northwestern Medicine, Wheaton Bank & Trust Co., First Trust Portfolios L.P., Gerald Subaru, Bear Paddle Swim School, Borter Heating & Air Conditioning, Chick-fil-A Wheaton, David J. Allen Wheaton Orthodontic Center, Dick Pond Athletics, Nike, Smart Sinus + Allergy, and Ultra Foods.
