- HEALTH + WELLNESS | Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital Opens New Private Patient Room Addition
DOWNERS GROVE - Nearly 70 patients moved into the new private patient bed tower at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital on March 1. The hospital’s new 110,000 square foot, three story addition, formally called the West Tower, houses 96 private patient rooms. The new patient rooms are nearly double the size of traditional rooms and include pull-out sleeper sofas for the comfort of family members who may want to stay with their loved ones. “Our mission is to serve the health needs of our community and the West Tower enables us to meet those needs in a world-class facility. Through years of deliberate planning, the new space was designed to better serve our clinicians, patients and family members,” said Dave Fox, president of Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital. “In addition, the state-of-the-art technology will improve patient safety and make patient care more efficient for our physicians and nurses.” Each floor was designed to maximize the size of the private patient rooms, ensuring patients and their families have the comfort and privacy they expect. The first patient to transfer to a new private room was Lee Jorwic of Elmhurst who is recovering from hip replacement surgery. Both Jorwic and his wife, Teri, whose four children were born at the hospital, said they were impressed with the large room that includes a separate space for visitors. “The new room is beautiful,” said Lee Jorwic. “I’m glad to have been a part of this historical move.” In order to ensure a safe and smooth transition for Jorwic and the other patients, more than 45 nurses, non-clinical associates and volunteers moved them one by one throughout the day, said Susan Okuno-Jones, chief nurse executive. “Today was a tremendous example of team work and change. Even though the patient’s healing environment changed and the practice environment for our clinicians has changed, one thing is for certain, and that is regardless of where our patients are care for here at Good Samaritan Hospital, they can be assured of excellent care provided by our expert, compassionate clinicians. Our staff and incredible volunteers came together to ensure a safe care transition,” sayd Okuno-Jones. - COVER STORY | 15 Homes to Adore
SPRINGTIME AT HOME This issue features a variety of homes located throughout the western suburbs– from charming cape cods and marvelous masterpieces to classic colonials and spectacular small spaces, each is just as adored as the next with a unique story to share beyond its entryway. KURT AND PAULA KELLER of NAPERVILLE Transforming Renovation Paula and Kurt love their peaceful and private 4 bedroom, 3.5 bath Naperville home backing to a serene pond; although the first thing most guests are awed by is the vintage wide-planked distressed French Oak flooring, updated kitchen, and décor with modern colors. Years after purchasing a builder spec home, in close proximity to the neighborhood pool, elementary and middle schools, Kurt and Paula originally wanted to renovate the entire house by taking down walls and more; but realizing that was not financially feasible, Pamela Coslet of Vineyard Chic in Geneva helped the Kellers create a more functional kitchen that aesthetically gave the entire home the look and feel of a big renovation without changing the footprint, simply by flipping the location of the pantry and double oven. Paula loves her newly expanded island, marble countertops, updated and extended whipped cream finished cabinets with X-mullion glass doors, farmhouse sink, tile backsplash, and beautiful lighting. While the couple takes pride in how their overall house looks, more importantly for them is that they want to live comfortably - and with three very active boys, ages 13, 10, and 7, they choose personal style and furniture accordingly. –Kristen Kucharski MIKE AND HEIDI MITERA of SUGAR GROVE A Home to Live and Relax This gracious executive home for sale on a quiet cul-de-sac was the ideal spot for Mike and Heidi Mitera to raise their children. Located in Black Walnut Trails, their backyard has a serene view of large trees and a picturesque barn. For more relaxation, the Miteras finished their basement with a large entertainment area and a custom tiled bathroom including a fantastic 6-head shower run on electronic key pad. They consider the kitchen, though, the heart of their home where they can help with homework and cook at the same time. They will be sad to leave, but trust that Kristy Sreenan from Baird and Warner Fox Valley will find the next happy owners. – Mindy Kyle THE SLAVKIN FAMILY of DOWNERS GROVE Custom Built Entertainers Dream The Slavkin family fell in love with everything about this home– from its spacious feel (5,000sq Ft / 6 bed/4 bath) with beautiful built-ins and details, to its fenced yard and the short distance to downtown Downers. After living in the city for 10+ years, the couple wanted a safe, diverse, and fun neighborhood that would be ideal for their growing family. The home, which is currently on the market through Caroline Neveril of Platinum Partners Realtors, has multiple levels with a grand entry including a beautiful fireplace located off the spacious porch. The family calls this room “The Parlor”. “The space above the fireplace has been perfect for the artistic photo of Chicago graffiti that my brother-in-law, a professional photographer, created for us. It has been a beautiful focal point,” said the current homeowner, Stephanie Slavkin. “The main living level is open with the sink and the island facing the family room. This has made it easy for me to visit with friends while entertaining and watch the kids while preparing meals, etc. Storage is plentiful in the kitchen, allowing the kids to have their own drawers & cabinets, too,” added Stephanie. The various levels make this home truly exquisite. Adding to it’s unique appeal, the basement has a guest apartment including a bedroom, full bath, wet bar, kitchenette and a sitting room. LOU AND LAURA GEORGELOS of NAPERVILLE #PerfectTown #PerfectHouse 24 years and 3 houses later, Lou and Laura loved raising their daughter, Tori in Naperville - the perks of a small town feel and excellent special education system with all the amenities of a big city. They were hooked as soon as they walked in the front door and saw the graceful, dramatic sweeping, mahogany staircase, the open family room, and gourmet kitchen. The 4 finished floors provided Tori with her own third floor hangout, Lou with a finished basement inclusive with wet bar, wine room, and recreation area, and Laura with a romantic master suite. A beautiful in-ground pool brings the entire family together to create memories for a lifetime! -Kristen Kucharski JAN AND MIKE MCCARTEN of GLEN ELLYN Quintessential Glen Ellyn Farmhouse Pattie Murray from KoenigRubloff Realty Group was thrilled to be selected to present the sale of Jan and Mike McCarten’s vintage farmhouse. The home, which is currently on the market, has a cozy feel with its arched doorways and giant molding and yet, new appointments throughout. It sits on an enormous in-town, professionally landscaped yard with a great patio looking over a wide variety of old growth trees and outdoor water feature. If you want to know how old the home is, it depends on where you are standing. The core is vintage with 2 different additions from different decades, but all tie together seamlessly. –Mindy Kyle DENNIS AND MARY KOSTIC of NAPERVILLE French Countryside in Suburbia After living in Naperville for 21 years, Dennis and Mary finally built their perfect family retreat – a modern farmhouse masterpiece of design and craftsmanship – with the help of Meyer Design and Lakewest Custom Builders. Gorgeous finishes include a barrel ceiling foyer, grey wood paneled den, crystal chandeliers, marble floors, and a chef’s kitchen wide open to the family room allowing Mary to cook while enjoying family and friends. The elevator will lead you to an old world wine cellar, theater, exercise, and craft room below or head upstairs to a bunk room suite built especially for the grandchildren. This six bedroom, 6 ½ bath is exquisite and welcoming. -Kristen Kucharski FRED AND MANDIE CONFORTI of WHEATON Functional Fairytale Home Fred and Mandie’s kids grew up watching a real-life episode of Bob the Builder while their home was being built – witnessing demolition, excavators, cranes, and concrete trucks. Now that the kids are 8 and 6, they live in a home that was designed around the family’s lifestyle including a kitchen and screened porch which share a floor-to-ceiling accordion window wall that can be entirely folded away so that both rooms become one contiguous entertaining space. Four lockers, a dog wash station, bedroom play lofts, and a finished media area keep the kids and pets contained and entertained; while the entire second floor is dedicated to the master suite and office space. -Kristen Kucharski MICHAEL AND TRENA COFFEY of NAPERVILLE Their Perfect Family Home Naperville felt like a dream come true for former California residents, Michael and Trena Coffey and their three children, Hudson (5), Ella (3) and James (1). When Dan Firks from Defined Realty Group showed them the 2-story Georgian home in West Wind, they fell in love with the open living room floor plan that centers around a floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace where their family could gather. The fenced backyard with a large deck and fire pit was a perfect area to relax. Naperville’s highly rated schools, great neighborhoods, restaurants and shops assured them this was a great place to raise their family. -Mindy Kyle MARK AND HEATHER YEAGER of DOWNERS GROVE Modernized Mid-Century Cape Cod When Mark and Heather Yeager decided to renovate an investment home just down the street from them in Denburn Woods, they called upon Cupboards Chicago Design Group to give the mid-century cape-cod home all the amenities of a new home but keep the character of the old home. The private backyard is a nature-lover’s dream, and the 2nd floor master suite has huge windows that make you feel you are sitting in the treetops. The beautiful modern home with its cozy kitchen and versatile great room still have the “old soul” they hoped to capture. –Mindy Kyle RENEE AND SCOTT PAWLOSKI of ELMHURST Kid Friendly Glam For the past 7 years, Renee and Scott Pawloski found Elmhurst to be the quintessential perfect town to raise their three kids in their glamorous, yet kid-friendly custom home. Details include a leaded glass front door, sparking chandeliers in the kitchen, coffered ceilings in the family room, gaming and exercise areas in the basement, and an outdoor living area inclusive with a television and lounge seating. Renee says she loves her house because it offers enough space to entertain large groups, but feels cozy and homey when her family of five is curled up in front of the fire, on their big sectional, snuggling, and watching a movie. -Kristen Kucharski CRAIG AND LAURI ARTHURS of WHEATON Dream Kitchen Layout Craig and Lauri Arthurs have lived in their home in Orchard Cove for 18 years, and over those years, as resources have become available, they have made renovations they feel are a reflection on their family. The kitchen is Lauri’s favorite room because it is where the family gathers to eat and talk. Her dream kitchen recently became a reality with the help and vision of Caroline Freeda from Total Kitchen and Bath. Together, they designed a new layout including her cook-top on the center island. Now, instead of having her back to everyone, Lauri can be a part of the family conversation while she is cooking. –Mindy Kyle GREAT FOR FAMILY FUN in BATAVIA Perfect Location, Beautiful Finished Basement, Ideal for Entertaining The family fell in love with this unique home in Batavia’s prestigious Tanglewood Hills on Alberosky Way for many reasons. - SPRING LANDSCAPING | 10 Garden Ideas to Help You With Your Planning
SPRINGTIME AT HOME – A whimsical garden often engages your senses in unexpected ways. Flowers and plants might mix with colorful found objects or vintage garden tools. If you’re artistically inclined, a whimsical garden provides a blank canvas for your favorite medium. Take inspiration from 10 gardens where flowers are only one of the attractions. 1. Your Favorite Things Perhaps you’re a cat, dog, rainbow, or lighthouse lover. Create a themed garden showcasing your favorite items among your flowers. Use pieces with different shapes and colors for maximum impact. 2. Unconventional Planters Give a functional garden a quirky new personality. Spiff up old bathtubs, galvanized or enamel tubs, cinder blocks, and ceramic bowls. Grow colorful flowers, scrumptious vegetables, and fresh herbs in your offbeat containers. 3. Vintage Chic Garden Give your garden vintage charm with original-condition outdoor furniture, well-used wire egg baskets, or old wooden birdhouses. Blend the old and new by filling your aging containers with blooming flowers or colorful decorative balls. 4. New Life for Garden Tools Well-used wheelbarrows, shovels, and metal watering cans can become garden showpieces. Turn your battered old wheelbarrow into a character-rich planter (line your metal wheelbarrow with heavy-grade plastic). Turn your shovel collection into climbing vine supports, and group your painted (or unpainted) watering cans together. 5. Striking Statuary Stone statues, concrete pedestals, and architectural surplus pieces can mingle nicely with flowers and ornamental grasses. Your colorful groundcovers, perennials, and shade gardens will warmly welcome these new garden companions. 6. Color-themed Garden Splash your favorite color all over your garden. Create stunningly bright patches of flowers, and paint your wheelbarrow and other garden tools to match. Add painted planters, garden stakes, and even plant markers to your outdoor playground. 7. Airy Outdoor Rooms Design your own outdoor room with all the comforts of home. Define your space with an arbor or pergola, and add a trellis (or two) woven with your favorite flowers. Arrange an all-weather chair and accent table in your new space. Add a shade screen so you can read or snooze on lazy afternoons. 8. Unexpected Art Turn common garden objects into pieces of art. Transform your conventional retaining wall into a colorful mural. Paint a faded wrought iron gate with lush green jungle tones, making a perfect backdrop for your blooming tiger lilies. 9. Fanciful Fairy Tales Create your own fairy garden with feather-like plants and tiny, colorful flowers. Miniature furnishings will give your fantastical friends a resting place when they’ve finished exploring your garden. By using fairies’ favorite colors, and keeping your décor to scale, you’ll attract discerning fairies who will appreciate your efforts to make them comfortable. 10. Sentimental Favorites Create a memory-filled garden using cherished items from family trips or important occasions. Embellish an accent table with shells from your family’s Bahamas vacation; or creatively arrange several metal sculptures you made in a fine craft class. Choose pieces with sentimental value that casual garden visitors might also enjoy. Submitted by www.landscapingideasonline.com #GlancerMagazine #HomeGarden #March2017

- COLOR YOUR KITCHEN | March 2017
TRENDING NOW – While the kitchen is often the busiest room in the house, it is also one of the most important rooms when it comes to renovations. An upgraded, vibrant kitchen that incorporates elements of personal style can make the room more attractive while increasing the home’s overall value. An easy way to give your kitchen an instant upgrade is by adding color in places that complement the decor of the room. Elements such as cabinetry, sinks and appliances are good places to start the facelift process while also adding more functionality. Consider Cabinets Not only can new cabinets provide the benefit of more storage space, they also present an opportunity to incorporate some colorful style into the kitchen. Make your splash with vibrant color on the cabinets themselves, or pair softer hues with muted contrasts to create an eye-pleasing backdrop for bold color appliances and vibrant accents and accessories. If you opt for a more traditional finish such as cherry, black, walnut, white or maple, you can still add visual interest to your kitchen design by contrasting the upper and lower cabinetry or creating a standout island in a different tone. Simply updating the hardware with a colorful twist can be an inexpensive alternative for adding color as well. Think About Sinks Once overlooked as an option for introducing style in the kitchen, today’s kitchen sinks accommodate a wide range of designs and preferences. Both function and aesthetics – including unexpected, vibrant color – are important when replacing your sink. An option such as the Elkay Quartz Luxe collection comes in six bold colors and three mount styles with a variety of bowl options and add-on accessories. The collection combines the highest-quality quartz with a high-performance, UV-stable acrylic resin for a durable sink that is easy to maintain, fade-resistant, vibrant in color and stain- and odor-resistant. For added convenience, Elkay’s unique quartz finishing process delivers a satin-smooth, non-porous surface that prevents foods, liquids and bacteria from sticking to it. Because natural quartz is four times harder than granite, it has the ability to resist scratches, smudges, heavy impact and heat up to 535 F, making it both a practical and attractive option. Explore a variety of models that can help make your renovation complete at elkay.com/quartz. Add Stylish Appliances A complete set of matching appliances makes for a modern and inviting appearance. Popular finish options include smudge-proof stainless steel, chrome, black or white, but if you’re really looking to brighten the room, some lines are available in colors such as red, blue, orange or green. Although the visual impact is important, remember to keep practical considerations in mind and look for the features – such as side-by-side versus drawered refrigerators, for example – that work best for your space and lifestyle. Find Your Ideal Sink A successful kitchen renovation captures every element of the space – including the kitchen sink. Select the right type, features and material to suit your family’s needs with four easy steps from the experts at Elkay: 1. Choose your sink material and color. Color, texture and sheen all provide ways for you to express your style. Stainless steel, copper, fine fireclay and colored quartz all offer unique benefits and aesthetics. 2. Choose your sink type. Whether top mount with a finished rim, undermount to create a seamless appearance, universal mount which can be installed either above or below your countertop or an exposed apron front mount that extends out slightly further than the cabinet below it, your new sink needs to be in sync with your chosen countertop material. Whether or not you plan to replace your countertops will also affect your options. 3. Choose your sink features. Select the number of bowls based on how you work. Single bowls can accommodate larger cooking sheets while double bowls allow for a quick wash/rinse sequence. Depth is an important consideration, too. 4. Choose your sink size and accessories. The size of your new sink is dependent upon the size of the cabinet it is installed in. Sink-base cabinets can be created specially to fit an installed sink. Also, look for accessories that work with your sink to save space and add convenience in the kitchen. Options include cutting boards, rinsing baskets, colanders, bottom grids and drains, among others. **Who To Call** WEST SUBURBAN KITCHEN DESIGNERS RiteWay Custom Homes (630) 790-8144 • www.ritewaycustomhomes.com HomeWerks Kitchen & Bath (866) 265-8895 • www.myhomewerks.com Vineyard Chic Kitchens (630) 464-1334 • www.vineyardchickitchen.com Redstart Construction (630) 305-8230 • www.redstartconstruction.com Total Kitchen & Bath (630) 495-2010 • www.totalkitchenbath.com Cupboards Chicago Design Group (630) 267-0440 • www.cupboardsltd.com Geneva Cabinet Gallery (630) 232-9500 • www.genevacabinetgallery.com Support Our Monthly Sponsors. - TRAVEL + LEISURE | Pedis-N-Passports
GRAND CAYMAN With spring break just around the corner, you may be dreaming of turquoise waters, powdery white sand beaches, and thirst-quenching pina coladas. Or perhaps, you’re the more adventurous type, fantasizing about epic scuba diving and snorkeling along a kaleidoscope of colorful coral . Either way, Grand Cayman is the perfect balance of adventure, leisure, and family bonding--as well as crossing off some thrilling tropical bucket list experiences! My mom and I are so excited to share our incredible three- day itinerary with you! Whether you plan on spending a week or a few days as we did, Grand Cayman will rejuvenate your Caribbean spirit. Day One: We arrived at The Ritz Carlton around 2pm, and were greeted with sunshine, tropical drinks, and warm smiles from employees and guests alike. It’s no wonder the Cayman Islands are known as the friendliest islands in the Caribbean. After checking into our glorious suite, we headed straight for the infamous onsite Seven Mile Beach where we ended up ordering a spectacular beachside dinner and concluded our first day with a serene sunset stroll. Day Two: In the morning we were met by a shuttle to head out for the most exciting excursion --swimming with “Seahorses.” Yes, Pampered Ponies actually love to swim. We horseback rode along a secluded beach, then removed the harnesses and rode bareback straight into the Caribbean Sea! While this was a little frightening for my mom, I was in my glory. After swimming with horses, we returned to our resort to relax for the rest of the afternoon. At twilight, we were picked up by Cayman Kayaks and headed to Rum Point for a Bioluminescent Bay Tour. This was a once in a lifetime experience. Witnessing this fragile ecosystem first hand was one of the most amazing and educational experiences we have ever had. Without question, if you visit Grand Cayman, this is a must do--ages 5 to 105! Day Three: On our final day, we headed to Stingray City to swim with stingrays. Again mom was a bit out of her comfort zone, while my experience included lots of hugging and kissing of these gentle creatures. Over the past few years, we’ve visited several Caribbean Islands and since we are definitely a mom and daughter who enjoy a balance of adventure and relaxation, Grand Cayman was an ideal getaway. ABOUT THE BLOGGERS Naperville mom and teacher, Kristen Kainrath and her teen daughter, Brooke, are a mother-daughter travel-blogging team who have always shared an incurable case of wanderlust. - THE CHICAGO WINO | March 2017
CORNED BEEF, CABBAGE, AND BEAUJOLAIS! St. Patrick’s Day is quickly approaching and being an “Irish Wino” beer isn’t my drink of choice. So what do I generally pair with the typical corned beef and cabbage? Beaujolais. Of course I generally like to step it up a notch so nothing less than a Cru Beaujolais will do. There are 10 areas of Cru Beaujolais (Burgundy, France) and one of my long time favorites is Fleurie. Fleurie is fairly central and the elegance and seduction that comes through in the wine from this area is remarkable. One of my favorite Cru Beaujolais from Fleurie is Domaine Lucien Lardy “Les Roches” (the one I am enjoying right now is a 2014). It was named after the pink granite rocks showing on the sandy soil of the Fleurie appellation. This racy little wine has gorgeous aromas of ripe raspberries and blackberries with flavors of strawberry fields forever, and a hint of cherry followed by a fleshy and juicy body with soft tannins. If the aromas don’t seduce you enough, the finish will, lasting for a long time. You could drink this through 2019 and since it retails for around $20, it’s an affordable luxury. Cru Beaujolais from Fleurie is often served on the cooler side. It pairs well with red meat, poultry, grilled salmon, soft cheeses, and one of my personal favorites…a well-stocked charcuterie board! In honor of St. Patty’s Day, try a bottle with your corned beef and cabbage and enjoy the month dedicated to shamrocks and shenanigans! Sláinte! ABOUT THE WRITER Eric McMillan, The Chicago Wino, is your source for lighthearted reviews of wine. thechicagowino.com also features links to fun tools like wine/food pairing, ideal serving temperatures, and "must try" bottles! - BUSINESS | 4 Tips For Finding A Career Mentor
TRENDING NOW – It’s not unusual for careers to get off to wobbly starts as young people, hampered by their lack of experience and contacts, find it difficult to achieve a firm footing. That’s one reason they should make it a goal to find mentors who could help guide them through the rough patches. “One of the biggest benefits of having a mentor is that person’s success can act as a catalyst for your belief in yourself,” says Lauren Davenport, CEO and founder of The Symphony Agency (www.symphonyagency.com), a marketing and technology firm. “It’s also a way to expand your network because a mentor can introduce you to people who could help you with your career and who you otherwise might not meet.” While mentors can be a great asset for young people in their career advancement, don’t expect the mentor to materialize out of nowhere and then do all the heavy lifting, Davenport says. Much of the onus is on the mentee to seek the relationship, cultivate it and make the most of it. She says a few ways to do that include: • Don’t be afraid to reach out. A simple LinkedIn search can help you find people who are currently in your dream job. Somehow, they managed to get the very thing you want. How did they pull that off? Send them a short message and tell them your aspirations. Ask if they can spare 30 minutes for you to visit their office and “pick their brains” about how they achieved success. • Do your homework. After you went to all the trouble to set up that meeting, you don’t want to show up unprepared. Learn all you can about this potential mentor with a Google search. Write down any questions you want to ask. For the meeting, dress like you already have a job with the person’s company and be 10 minutes early, Davenport says. • Join a networking organization . If reaching out to an individual isn’t in your comfort zone, seek a networking organization that focuses on career growth. Sign up for a MeetUp group taught by someone you admire. “Take notes as the person speaks,” Davenport says. “After the event, you’re also going to need to muster up the courage to introduce yourself. To find a good mentor, in most cases you really are going to need to take the first step.” • Pay attention to the mentor’s advice . You may not follow through on every suggestion, but you do need to listen to what they have to say. After all, the wisdom and experience they can provide is the whole point of having a mentor. Davenport recalls early in her career joining a networking group and trying to pitch her company to the members without success. She mentioned to her mentor her inability to generate any business. “She told me if I wanted to be taken seriously as a business woman I needed to change my wardrobe,” Davenport says. “I put away the summer dresses I typically wore and bought some tailored jackets and other clothes that helped present a business-professional look.” Soon after, business picked up. “I still actively seek women who are in my industry and at similar career levels,” Davenport says. “Sometimes they even work for competitors. We don’t share any company secrets, but we often are experiencing similar struggles, so we swap stories and give each other advice on how to overcome those challenges.” About Lauren Davenport Lauren Davenport is chief executive officer at The Symphony Agency (www.symphonyagency.com). She founded the company after discovering that businesses were struggling to understand how to implement marketing and technology to reach their full potential in the digital age. Her natural entrepreneurial drive grew the organization from a boutique consulting business into a multi-million dollar agency. She is a contributor for the New York Daily News and has been featured on PBS, ABC Action News, iHeartRadio, AMEX OPEN, and more. #GlancerMagazine #Business #TrendingNow

I highly encourage anyone who is interested.” Isabella Heidenreich, an international business and marketing major at Bradley University, attended Naper Settlement summer camps for three years as a child and decided to transition into a camp counselor. Heidenreich says becoming a counselor was incredibly fulfilling. “As a camp counselor, you get to meet a lot of great people at the Settlement and get an inside scoop to some of the buildings and curatorial work,” said Heidenreich. “You have a lot of great interactions with the kids, which makes the job really fun and rewarding.” Camp Naper Counselors will implement camp activities and communicate the themes of Naper Settlement by leading educational programs and working with campers to provide a quality museum experience that is both exciting and instructive. This temporary summer position is part of the Education Department and reports directly to the Director of Learning Experiences. College students from all backgrounds and fields of study are encouraged to apply to the Internship Program. Students will pick a department to work in, which includes Development, Learning Experiences, Marketing, Special Events and Guest Services. During their internship, they will be assigned a specific project and will have weekly lunch meetings with staff members on select topics, such as collections management and marketing plans. Interns will work 20 hours a week and will work the June and July Naper Nights Summer Concert Series. Kirsten Kleman is a senior at North Central College, studying art history and studio art, and was a Volunteer Management Intern in the Guest Services Department this past summer. Kleman decided to apply to Naper Settlement’s internship program to gain industry experience and exposure to the type of workforce she wanted to enter. “The internship program gives you an opportunity to connect with department leaders to gain exposure to different responsibilities and their impact on the museum’s initiatives,” said Kleman. “Interns gain a well-rounded viewpoint, understanding day-to-day activities, large projects and special events from start to finish.” Kirsten Kleman currently works part time in the Guest Services department at Naper Settlement. Kleman assists with volunteer related activities, wedding rentals and special events. - TECH TIME | Parents, Teenagers and The Dangers of Online Dating
ONLINE DATING – When most of today’s parents were teenagers, they developed their romantic crushes on the person they sat next to in algebra class, bumped into in front of their school lockers, or spotted at the next table in the cafeteria. But these days, teens in search of a date for Saturday night can find romance online, which brings both convenience and risk. “More than ever, teenagers need a crash course in online safety and social media issues that they encounter on a daily basis,” says Gabriella van Rij (www.gabriella.global), a kindness activist, anti-bullying proponent and author whose latest book is Watch Your Delivery. February is an opportune time for parents to broach the subject because it’s National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. But van Rij says any time is the right time. “It’s a subject you should have ongoing conversations about,” she says. Online dating is extremely popular among adults, but teenagers haven’t been left out as technology continues to shape the way people meet and interact. A Pew Research Center study found that 8 percent of all teenagers say they met a romantic partner online. Most teens, though, reported they hadn’t dated anyone at all. When Pew narrowed its findings just to teens who have dated, the percentage who met their dating partner online jumped to nearly 25 percent. In addition, Pew found that 31 percent of teens 13 to 17 had sent a flirtatious message online and 10 percent had gone so far as to send flirty or sexy pictures or videos of themselves. “Like it or not, for students today, social media is a way to amplify everything,” van Rij says. While social media sites provide a means to socialize, they also expose teenagers to the more unpleasant aspects of technology, such as cyber bullying and the dangers of online predators. Indeed, one-fourth of all teens say they have unfriended or blocked someone on social media because that person was flirting in a way that made them uncomfortable, Pew reported. “That’s a clear sign that this isn’t always nice and innocent,” van Rij says, “and parents need to step in to protect their teens.” Some of the ways to do that include: • Talk to them. The simplest, most direct way to protect your teen from online dangers is to discuss with them your concerns. Explain the dangers of communicating with strangers online and urge them to let you know if anyone they don’t know suggests meeting them. • Make sure your son or daughter knows they can come to you. Whether they are being bullied or made to feel uncomfortable by improper sexual comments, teens need to feel confident that they can turn to their parents for support. • Monitor their aps. Find out about the aps they are using. This doesn’t have to seem intrusive. Make it fun, van Rij says. “Express curiosity about the aps and let them explain to you how they work,” she says. “And you have a right as a parent to be on every ap your son or daughter is on. That way you can monitor what they’re doing, not to spy, but for safety reasons.” “A lot of this comes down to parents having a good relationship with their teens during what are very pivotal years,” van Rij says. “It’s just another part of influencing and guiding them toward becoming responsible and mature adults.” About Gabriella Van Rij Gabriella van Rij (www.gabriella.global) is a speaker, author and activist whose latest book, Watch Your Delivery, explores how we often fail in communicating. She began her life as an orphan in Pakistan, and today is a frequent guest on TV and radio.
