  • BUSINESS + CAREER | Feeling Stuck In A Lousy Job? Take A Look Inward

YOU ARE MORE THAN YOU THINK YOU ARE Taylor sits in her 6 x 8 cubicle waiting for the next IT ticket to come her way and suddenly feels the walls closing in around her. She feels like she’s suffocating and is only seconds away from a panic attack, her third this month. In her mind, it’s all because of the job. And that makes her like a lot of other people. A 2016 survey of 8,000 workers across three continents – North America, Europe and Asia – found that 15 percent of Americans hate their jobs. That number was nearly 5 percent higher than the next closest nation of job haters. Taylor won’t deny that she would be part of that 15 percent. Although she has taken a leave of absence because of the stress she feels from her job, and admits that it has caused problems in her personal life, she feels stuck in this job she doesn’t like, with little hope of leaving it in the near future. While Taylor is quick to blame co-workers, her workload or what she sees as poor management, the answer to her problems might actually be closer than she thinks. “Most people don’t want to acknowledge responsibility for their life, their story and what is not working in their life,” says Carol Talbot (www.caroltalbot.me), a keynote speaker and author of YOU the Divine Genius. Talbot says that people who are stuck in situations they don’t like should take a step back and ask themselves “how did I create that?” For those who are unhappy with their job situation, she says, there are other questions they also might want to start asking themselves: • Do I hate my job or do I hate my field? Those who are frustrated with their job situation shouldn’t be so quick to look for a career change. Often jobseekers will take a position just to get their foot in the door of a certain industry or company. If this was the case, Talbot says, then perhaps it’s time to examine other positions that more closely resemble that ideal job or have a discussion with management to evaluate which position in the company is the best fit. • What kind of work would I do for free? Perhaps music producer Quincy Jones summed it up best when he said: “The people who make it to the top – whether they’re musicians, or great chefs, or corporate honchos – are addicted to their calling... [they] are the ones who’d be doing whatever it is they love, even if they weren’t being paid.” Those who are passionate about their work often feel as though they never worked a day in their life. • Do I have the courage to act? Plenty of people stuck in a job they don’t like know what they want but give up quickly after a few rejections. It takes courage to make a change, particularly when it comes to a career. “I encourage others to go beyond the boundaries of who they believe themselves to be,” Talbot says. “You are more than you think you are.” About Carol Talbot Carol Talbot (www.caroltalbot.me), author of the International Best-Seller, YOU The Divine Genius, is a keynote speaker who has delivered inspiring messages to corporations and conferences in more than 20 countries. She is a Certified Master Trainer of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), a Certified Trainer of hypnosis and a Certified Master Trainer of Time Line Therapy. In addition, she is a Master Firewalk Instructor, firing up teams and groups to walk across burning hot coals. #GlancerMagazine #Business #Lifestyle

  • DINING + CABARET | SafeHouse Chicago Offically Opens Covert Windy City Location

THE SECRET HAS BEEN LEAKED: SAFEHOUSE CHICAGO OFFICIALLY OPENED ITS DOORS LAST MONTH Reliable sources indicate that Chicago’s newest experiential restaurant, SafeHouse Chicago, officially opened on Wednesday, March 1. CHICAGO – On orders from Control, SafeHouse agents will neither confirm nor deny that legendary Milwaukee destination (and famous spy refuge), The SafeHouse, will officially open its covert Windy City location to the public on March 1 at 5 p.m. However, reliable sources have reported this to be factual. SafeHouse Chicago, a refuge for weary spies, maintains the establishment's treasured 50-year legacy while adding upgraded experiences to the new location, including new technology and a modern design by Chicago’s own award-winning firm, The Gettys Group. On orders from Control, Station Chief Agent OH-OH-7 (aka David J. Baldwin) founded SafeHouse Milwaukee in 1966. His vision for this spy-themed hideaway was unique and full of historical references. SafeHouse became a local landmark and cultural icon for hungry spies. Agent OH-OH-7 and his Chief of Disinformation Agent Eliza remained undercover for nearly 50 years. Their secret was service for all spies who came in from the cold – or from the warm. Today, Agent BB (aka Greg Marcus, Marcus Corporation President and CEO), and his team of friendly Marcus Restaurant agents continue Agent OH-OH-7’s vision. “Who doesn’t want to escape the everyday for an hour or two and become an international superspy?” says Agent BB, Greg Marcus, President and CEO of The Marcus Corporation. “Fascination with the world of espionage persists in novels and movies, making the SafeHouse concept one that stands the test of time. Spying is, after all, the world’s second oldest profession.” Secretly headquartered below the city streets in the vicinity of 60 E. Ontario Street, the SafeHouse Chicago fuses elements from the original Milwaukee location with modern technology. The password to enter will remain unchanged, but a new agent authentication process and unique new experiences have been installed, including the soon-to-be infamous Cone of Silence Booth. Visiting spies will be tasked with locating the top-secret entrance marked only with a sign for International Exports Ltd. flanked by a gaslight and an iconic red door. Before entering, operatives will be required to provide the password or perform a top-secret clearance test to gain entry to this newest refuge for spies from around the world. Once inside, operatives will embark on a one-of-a-kind mission as they create their own agent name and complete missions while discovering gadgets and uncovering hidden secrets. In addition to upgraded technology, the SafeHouse Chicago integrates more technology and upgraded aesthetics for agents operating in the modern world. The design of the SafeHouse was led by award-winning design firm, The Gettys Group, and Agent Fudd, Paul Daurio. Original espionage artifacts are an integral part of the décor, including the flight deck from an authentic spy plane donated by the man who flew it in WWII, as well as a piece of the Berlin Wall secured from covert operatives. From the sleek Interpol Bar to the Spybrary, to the Seduction Lounge and the Interrogation Room, every aspect of the design has been tinkered, tailored, soldiered, and spied. Interactive elements such as a Gadget Bar featuring a nightly magician, and “futuristic” technology, fuse seamlessly in an action-packed atmosphere where food and signature drinks unite guests as they embark on their mission. Every spy needs to eat well. Under orders from Control, the SafeHouse culinary agents are always on the prowl, tracing the source of local ingredients and securing them from top suppliers. These ingredients are then smuggled into the SafeHouse and hand-assembled into fresh dishes by experienced chefs to spies who deserve local and authentic food. Honoring original favorites like the Fried C4 Cheese Curds and the hand-crafted M.O.A.B. (Mother of All Burgers), Agent Pickles (a.k.a. Head Culinary Agent David Hardy) has bulked up the menu for visiting spies, adding specialties including our Camp X Poutine and an array of savory entrees as well as healthy vegetarian and vegan items. “Today’s consumers are increasingly seeking unique experiences, and the SafeHouse is a one-of-a-kind restaurant and bar that fills that niche,” says Agent Blonde, Peggy Williams-Smith, Marcus Hotels & Resorts Senior Vice President. “Spies in the great city of Chicago were in need of a refuge and Control wanted to ensure there was a SafeHouse for them as well.” SafeHouse Chicago is open Sunday-Friday 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. For more information on The SafeHouse, visit www.SafeHouseChicago.com or call (312) 3131-007. • THE CHICAGO WINO | April 2017

TRAVELING THE GLOBE WITH LOCATIONS WINE Dave Phinney, a visionary winemaker, was having a conversation with a friend at an airport in France in 2010. He was talking about how interesting and fun it would be to make wine without the strict regional regulations that France has. As he was parting ways with his friend he noticed that iconic black and white “F” sticker on the bumper of a taxi cab and then he had an epiphany. What if he made wines from all over the world that pays homage to the country, while being creative with blending and/or how it’s done? “Locations Wine” was soon born. Dave Phinney developed a team of some of the best people and years later developed many different regional wines that are not only affordable but delicious! Tasting through Locations is a fun way to explore regions from around the world. I’ve had several of these wines but recently opened up 3 of them which reminded me why I love them so much! F5 – French Rosé Wine: Sourced from the south of France and is 100% Grenache. The wine opened up with aromas of floral notes, stone fruit, and sour cherry. Upon tasting there is this alluring creaminess about it with notes of peaches, cantaloupe, watermelon and some balanced minerality. It was light and refreshing and perfect for the day I was tasting it on. Additionally, I enjoyed their “I – Italian Red Wine”, and “P4 – Portuguese Red Wine”, both of which were interesting blends and tasty. So if you don’t have your passport ready for your trip around the world just yet, have some fun with these location wines that Dave has elegantly put together for around $20 a bottle. Sláinte! • ARTS + ENTERTAINMENT | Author and Professor Marsha Gordon to Discuss New Book, March 22 at Cantigny

THE WAR MOVIES OF SAM FULLER – WHEATON – The First Division Museum at Cantigny Park welcomes author Marsha Gordon, Ph.D., on Wednesday, March 22. She will discuss “Film is Like a Battleground: Sam Fuller’s War Movies.” The free presentation inside the Cantigny Visitors Center begins at 7:30 pm. Parking also is complimentary. Published this year, Dr. Gordon’s book details the war movies by filmmaker Sam Fuller, who served with the 1st Infantry Division in World War II. During the war he established the roots of his cinematographic schooling including his 16mm footage of the liberation of a Nazi concentration camp. Fuller went on to become a screenwriter and director working on many films from the 1940s to his last screenplay in 1994. “Film is Like a Battleground” is the first book about the genre that defined Fuller’s career. • CARING & SHARING | Bowl-a-Thon Hosted by Local Kiwanis Clubs Raise Funds for Spastic Paralysis R

BATAVIA – Bowlers of all ages joined in the fun for a great cause at the Annual Bowl A Thon hosted by local Kiwanis Clubs. On Saturday February 25th participants enjoyed pizza, bowling, and comradery, all while raising pledges for their team. Donations were collected by each bowler per pin or flat pledge. Every year in February, you can find clubs gathering together over a cause which is the heart of Kiwanians in the Illinois and Eastern Iowa District, (the Spastic Paralysis Research Foundation.) Over eighty people attended the event at Bowling Green Sports Center in West Chicago that was hosted by clubs within Division 10. These clubs include, Elgin Noon, Elgin Golden K, St. Charles Noon, St. Charles Golden K, Geneva and Batavia. Imagine a world in which it is difficult to complete the simplest of tasks like brushing your hair, tying your shoes, or even talking. When you have spastic paralysis, the nerves that control muscle movement are hyperirritable and do not function in a coordinated manner. Impulses from them cause spasmodic muscle contractions. While not a disease itself, spastic paralysis is a symptom of various diseases and medical conditions. In the past 65 years, tremendous medical breakthroughs have been accomplished with the help of the Spastic Paralysis Research Foundation. During World War II, a group of Kiwanians came together to address an area of medical research that was lacking. Research was being done for almost every human ailment-- heart disease, cancer, leukemia, polio and many others. However, no where in the world was research being done in the area of spastic paralysis. Clubs throughout Illiois and Eastern Iowa (which form the I-I District of Kiwanis International) found themselves dedicating their talents towards this cause and, in 1952, the Spastic Paralysis Research Foundation was organized. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide financial grants to top level medical and scientific researchers specializing in spastic paralysis and other diseases of the central nervous system. For more information about the Foundation you can visit www.sprfoundation.org. A resounding thank you to all of those who supported a bowler, and the sponsors who made the Bowl A Thon possible: Janet Marino LMT, Carmen Briggs of Kettley Realty, State Farm Insurance Agent Steve Queen, Bulldog Plumbing, Association for Individual Development, O'Brien Law, First State Bank, Kiwanis Club of Batavia, Kiwanis Club of St. Charles Noon, Kiwanis Club of Elgin Golden K, and Illinois-Eastern Iowa District Governor Rick Poulton, 3e Prints, and Bowling Green.
