- THE CHICAGO WINO | August 2017
DE LA FINCA Sometimes the only way for me to beat the heat during summer in Chicago is to sip on some sparkling wine. That paired with some company, music and patio times is perfect. Cava is always a great choice and Raventos i. Blanc consistently puts out affordably delicious juice! I opened up their De La Finca, 2013 which was aged on the lees for 36 months. De la Finca comes from a historical vineyard, situated 50 km to the West of Barcelona; its geology and microclimate makes it a formidable rival to the most prestigious of wines. This is a blend of 50% Xarel-lo, 40% Macabeu and 10% Parellada. This has beautiful aromas of fresh citrus, floral and minerality amongst other alluring notes. Mouthwatering flavors follow with notes of citrus, tropical and floral. It’s absolutely delicious and rather decadent. Raventos i. Blanc makes many Cavas for different price points but this one retails for around $30. So the next time you’re outside on your patio maybe pop open a bottle of Cava to battle the heat. I believe it’s what the doctor ordered. Sláinte! - TRAVEL + LEISURE | Pedis-N-Passports
GIVING BACK Being a teen travel and life-style blogger is more than I could ever have dreamed of. Having the opportunities to travel all over the country and world have been such a blessing. I am grateful for each and every trip, journey, excursion and adventure. But now it is time for me to give back. Since I began travel blogging with my mom, we have both said we want our purpose to be meaningful. At first, we weren’t sure exactly what that looked like. Inspiring girls to travel and take risks seemed obvious at the time, and is still an aspiring goal. However, being an influencer, I feel there are more important jobs to be done. There are animals suffering, refugees ill and lost without homes, homeless people cold and alone, girls that cannot attend schools due to lack of hygienic products, schools that barely have resources for students to learn and the list unfortunately goes on and on. I have been asking myself for months, ‘What can I do to make a difference?’ Well, a few weeks ago my mom was contacted by another mom whose daughter follows Pedis-N-Passports. Her name is Gabi Frank, a 13-year-old girl from Downers Grove. She told me she has collected 2,000 books for children in the Caribbean through Pack for a Purpose and Sandals Foundation. I was so thrilled to hear about this noble charity and immediately wanted to partake. Pack for a Purpose was founded by Rebecca Rothney and a team of a few wonderful volunteers. Their mission is “to positively impact communities around the world by assisting travelers who want to bring meaningful contributions to the destinations they visit.” If you are planning a vacation, you should definitely go to their website and see if the community you are visiting is in need of any supplies. I mean what is better than going on an amazing vacation and helping people simultaneously. Pack for a Purpose provides supply lists on its website for destinations in over 60 countries. The needed items range from school supplies, to personal hygiene, to clothing and all sorts of items (many other requested items). People all over the world are in need and if you are fortunate enough to travel, it is a humanitarian responsibility to give back. So Gabi and I are asking for your help. We would like to collect 3,000 new and gently used books for children ages 3-6 years old for a new school in Jamaica. If you are willing to donate a book or two, please email us at: pedis.n.passports@gmail.com. Please spread the word and help make a difference one book at a time. DESTINED FOR DESTIN—OUR FIRST MOTHER-DAUGHTER ROAD TRIP TO EMERALD GRANDE Over the past six years, we have flown to Destin, Florida, several times to visit my son, Ryan, who was stationed in the Air Force. Staying on base, we never had to consider booking a condo or hotel. Nevertheless, I cannot tell you how many times we would gaze starry-eyed at the Emerald Grande–a majestic castle nestled on the edge of the sparkling harbor in dreamy Destin. So when spring break was fast approaching, Brooke and I decided to venture on our first mother-daughter road trip to Florida from Naperville–and yes, we decided that after a fourteen hour drive, we deserved a week of pampering at the breathtaking Emerald Grande Resort. It was the best decision we could have made--a lifetime of fun mother-daughter memories cruising down Highway 65. Even more exciting was Ryan flying back to Destin to spend the week with us. What a blessing! The Emerald Grand gave us the most spacious 3 bedroom-3 bath condo on the 11th floor overlooking the festive harbor, powdery white sand beaches and mesmerizing Gulf of Mexico. The two enormous balconies were the ideal setting for greeting the sunrise with your morning cup of coffee and soaking up sunsets at the end of a glorious beach day. The setting of the Emerald Grande is as extravagant as a Caribbean getaway without the cost of airfare for us. The location is also perfect for it is situated right in the midst of the Harbor Walk where we enjoyed the many delicious restaurants, zip lining, shopping and just strolling along watching the plethora of beautiful boats passing by. The Harbor Walk offers something for everyone: kayaks, jet skis, dolphin cruises, along with many other boating excursions, parasailing, concerts, dining, a shuttle to the white sand beaches right within view, an abundance of kid friendly boardwalk activities and so much more! Never having driven more than three hours by myself, I have to say this road trip was transformational. We sang our hearts out, played corny road trip games, shared secrets, met amazing people at each of our stopping points, and got a little lost in Alabama. - WAY BACK WHEN | A Sweet Love Story
ELAINE AND HENRY BARON – ONE OF THE CITY’S LONGEST MARRIAGES ON RECORD – HOW SWEET IS THAT? SUBURBAN CHICAGO–On July 12, 2017, Elaine and Henry Baron will celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary at Ruth Chris Steakhouse in Northbrook. The couple has lived in Chicago since 1948 and has two children, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Both avid travelers, Henry (97) and Elaine (93) live independently in Highland Park and plan to celebrate like they have every year since they met – with food, family, and lots of dancing. “We met when I was 16 and Henry was 20,” says Elaine. “I had gone through 2 1/2 years of college at NYU and I was pretty mature. I was visiting my aunt and uncle in Great Neck, Long Island, over a weekend and I was invited to a sweet 16 party by a girl I knew who lived across the street by my aunt and uncle. Dada had a few guy friends and one of them was invited to this party. I was playing ping pong with some young man and I beat him and Dada was watching and asked me to play. At the end of the evening, he wanted to know if I would like a ride back to the Bronx. Turned out he lived about six blocks from where we lived. And that was how it all began.“ After the war broke out in 1939, the two decided to get married. Elaine was 18 and Henry was 22. “I was pretty gutsy getting married at that age and moving away from my family especially after Dada was in the army and I had to live in a one tiny room by myself,” adds Elaine. “But I guess it had to be love because it sure wasn't easy.“ They moved from Lincoln, Nebraska, to Dayton, Ohio and finally settled in Chicago. During this time, Henry was teaching Air Force pilots the engineering of the plane. By the time they moved to Chicago in 1948, Henry and Elaine had one daughter, Roberta, and another on the way, Michele. The family lived on the Northside of Chicago until 1967, when they built a home in Skokie. Later when their daughters moved to Deerfield, they built another home in Highland Park, where they lived until 2012. This home was always the center of a lot of family dinners and activities. Currently they are living in a condo development in Highland Park and celebrating all that they have to be thankful.-Submitted #GlancerMagazine #WayBackWhen #Lifestyle #July152017 #Chicago

- COMMUNITY | Naperville Police Offer Safety Class for College Bound Students
ALL COLLEGE FRESHMEN AND THEIR PARENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND ON JULY 26 As many new college freshman prepare for “move-in” day on college campuses across the nation, the Naperville Police Department wants to be sure that parents are sending their young adults off safely. For this reason, the Department is offering a presentation on Wednesday, July 26 at 7 p.m. entitled, “Safety for the College Bound Student,” and encourages all upcoming college freshmen and their parents to attend. No registration is required for this class, which will be held at the Naperville Police Department, 1350 Aurora Ave. Crime Prevention Specialist Mary Browning states, “This is a great opportunity to learn how to be safe while on campus and away from home. We live in a very safe community and because of that our children can develop a false sense of security. This class will help students learn strong crime prevention strategies and also make them aware of some of the dangers of campus life and how to safeguard themselves.” The presentation has two distinct areas of focus. The first part of the program will educate students and parents about drugs, alcohol and the law. Browning states, “Students may be subjected to temptations and challenges that they haven’t yet been taught how to deal with. This class will talk frankly about making choices and understanding what the consequences may be; legally, personally and academically.” The second portion of the presentation will concentrate on personal safety. Browning said the Department wants students to start their college careers armed with the necessary knowledge and skills to keep themselves and their property safe. She added, “We want students to learn how to protect themselves and to know how to avoid being a victim of crime.” For more information, contact Crime Prevention Specialist Mary Browning at (630) 420-6731. #GlancerMagazine #EducationNews #Community #GlancerWeekly #Naperville

- TECH TIME | Cell Phone Etiquette: 10 Tips
JULY IS NATIONAL CELL PHONE COURTESY MONTH From texting and driving to putting our devices down on the table at a restaurant to speaking loudly and sharing personal details in front of others, this is the perfect time to reflect on our mobile phone habits. Etiquette expert Sharon Schweitzer, founder of Protocol & Etiquette Worldwide, offers these 10 modern cell phone manners & etiquette tips for everyone to remember this month and year-round: 1. Hidden cell phone: Whether you are attending an important business meeting, on a date, or in a casual setting with friends and family, keep your phone out of sight. Placing your phone on the table or desk sends the clear message that the people you are with are not your number-one priority. 2. Silent Smartphone: It’s polite and responsible to turn off your cell phone before meetings, meals, and meaningful moments – like dates! If you can’t turn your device off, turn it to silent or vibrate. Your phone is not a replacement for an in-person meeting. 3. Exceptions: There are exceptions to every rule: A) Doctors, nurses, first responders, and health providers B) Those expecting emergency calls C) Those who have an infant with a babysitter, or a person with a caregiver D) Those momentarily sharing photos with others E) Those researching an important request, such as directions. 4. Excuse Me: If accepting an emergency call, excuse yourself as quietly and calmly as possible from the gathering with an apology. For example, “I apologize; however, this is urgent. Please excuse me. I will return in a moment.” 5. Consider Content Carefully: With cell phones, spontaneity can be contagious. Remember, once a text, tweet or post is sent, it’s live. Sure, you can delete it, but it’s out there on the Internet, just waiting to bite you back. According to a YouGov Omnibus survey, 57% of Americans regret a text or social media post they’ve sent. So, use common sense and don’t post inappropriate photos, or text while consuming adult beverages. Avoid profanity. Consider these tips when the urge strikes to send a spontaneous message: • Step away from your phone, take a deep breath, and count to 30 to attempt to dissolve negative emotions towards the receiver • Ask a friend to advise whether your content is appropriate • Carefully consider the repercussions - are you making a valid contribution or a faux pas? 7. Respond promptly: When you miss a call, text, or email, respond in an appropriate and timely manner by apologizing for missing their message. Then respond with substance. 8. 10-foot rule: When making or taking a call, move 10 feet away from the building including windows. No one wants to see you nervously pacing or gesturing during your conversation. Step outside when responding to a call while in a house of worship, medical office, library, theatre, or hospital. Refrain from confidential conversations on planes, trains, and automobiles. 9. Don’t Talk & Drive: Many cities now ban smartphone use while driving. If you must use the phone, drive to a safe area away from traffic. New vehicle technology comes with integrated hands-off, Bluetooth options. If your vehicle has this technology, be attentive to the road and use caution. Safety first! 10. The Cellular Crutch: Your phone isn’t a gadget to turn-to when you are not sure what to do in uncomfortable situations. If you walk into a new office, or a wedding reception and don’t know anyone, take time to engage face-to-face. Deferring back to your phone as a crutch will keep you from truly connecting with new people. Practice improving your face-to-face interactions by turning your cell phone off, or leaving it hidden in the car. 10. Focus Attention Towards Other Hobbies: We tend to use our phones everywhere- at parties, at work, before we go to sleep. This dramatically impacts how much, or how little, we accomplish daily. Make a conscious effort to focus on projects, without the distraction of constantly checking your phone for email, texts, or surfing the web. #GlancerMagazine #TechTime
