  • CONCERT NEWS | Melissa Etheridge to Join Stray Cats Opening Night of Ribfest 2018

ROCK ICON MELISSA ETHERIDGE PERFORMS AT NAPERVILLE’S RIBFEST JULY 4th The Exchange Club of Naperville, host to Naperville’s Ribfest, is proud to announce that Melissa Etheridge will perform on the Navistar Main Stage at Ribfest on July 4th. According to Joel Carlsen, 2018 Ribfest Chair, “The 2018 Entertainment Committee’s music selections have surpassed every expectation we established for 2018 headliners. Knoch Park will be rocking and rolling like never before.” Ribfest 2018 opens Wednesday July 4th with Melissa Etheridge, the Stray Cats AND fireworks sponsored by Meijer®. The event, which continues though the 7th also boasts a July 5th act to be announced shortly, and country stars Jake Owen, Chris Janson and Jordan Davis on July 6th. Powerhouse rocker Steven Tyler and the Loving Mary Band close out the annual music festival on Saturday, July 7th. ABOUT MELISSA ETHERIDGE Melissa Etheridge stormed onto the American rock scene in 1988 with the release of her critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, which led to an appearance on the 1989 Grammy Awards show. For several years, her popularity grew around such memorable originals as "Bring Me Some Water," "No Souvenirs" and "Ain't It Heavy," for which she won a Grammy® in 1992. Etheridge hit her commercial and artistic stride with her fourth album, Yes I Am (1993). The collection featured the massive hits, "I'm the Only One" and "Come to My Window," a searing song of longing that brought Etheridge her second Grammy® Award for Best Female Rock Performance. In 1995, Etheridge issued her highest charting album, Your Little Secret, which was distinguished by the hit single, "I Want to Come Over." Her astounding success that year led to Etheridge receiving the Songwriter of the Year honor at the ASCAP Pop Awards in 1996. Known for her confessional lyrics and raspy, smoky vocals, Etheridge has remained one of America’s favorite female singer-songwriters for more than two decades. In February 2007, Melissa Etheridge celebrated a career milestone with a victory in the “Best Song” category at the Academy® Awards for “I Need to Wake Up,” written for the Al Gore documentary on global warming, An Inconvenient Truth. As a performer and songwriter, Etheridge has shown herself to be an artist who has never allowed “inconvenient truths” to keep her down. Earlier in her recording career, Etheridge acknowledged her sexual orientation when it was considered less than prudent to do so. In October 2004, Etheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer, a health battle that, with her typical tenacity, she won. Despite losing her hair from chemotherapy, Etheridge appeared on the 2005 Grammy® telecast to sing “Piece of My Heart” in tribute to Janis Joplin. By doing so she gave hope to many women afflicted with the disease. On October 7, 2016 Melissa Etheridge released Memphis Rock & Soul, her first album since 2014’s critically lauded This Is M.E. Recorded at Royal Studios in Memphis, the album has received stellar reviews from the likes of Entertainment Weekly, Parade, Rolling Stone, American Songwriter and more. Guitar World raved “the album is a triumphant application of Etheridge’s signature rasp and substantial guitar chops to this classic genre,” while Edge Media Network declared Melissa “is a singer who can fire it up like Janis Joplin, touch the heart like Elvis Presley and steam up the windows like her musical hero, Otis Redding.” Tickets for Melissa Etheridge and Stray Cats are on sale now via ribfest.net. Tickets for Jake Owen / Chris Janson / Jordan Davis, and Steven Tyler and the Loving Mary Band, are available also through ribfest.net. There are a variety of ticket choices for Ribfest 2018. For the concert lover, options include all Park General Access (which includes the Navistar Main Stage concerts and South Park), Standing Room Only, Skybox, VIP and various combination ticket packs...... The South Park ticket option does not include access to the Navistar Main Stage music venue. South Park will feature local talent on the South Stage, and host the carnival, family area, and rib vendors, and offers a daily admission fee of $5 for ages 12 and older. Children 11 and under are free South Park General Admission every day. On July 4th, South Park admission is free after 5 pm. Veterans are admitted to the South Park for free all day on July 4th. • ARTS + ENTERTAINMENT | Naperville Resident Is Today's Final Jeopardy Champion

IT'S BEEN AN EXCITING START OF THE WEEK FOR ONE LOCAL WOMAN When Naperville technical services librarian Lisa Mueller was 11 years old, she wrote an angry letter via email to Jeopardy re: something that didn't seem right with one of the answers featured in the Harry Potter category. When asked about it by Alex Trebek during the show's introductions earlier today, she said, "Being Harry Potter's biggest fan - I wrote some angry emails when I was 11 to let them know." She went on to share that she was very persistent in reaching out and was very happy to receive a reply by one of the show's representatives, but that he told her this was not the right channel to use for submitting her complaint about the book series category. Alex chuckled at her story and told her that he would have personally responded to her had her note been addressed to him directly, to which she replied, "Really, great, can I still do it?" Lisa Mueller has been on the show since last week and was today's champion in Final Jeopardy. To view Lisa's show stats and to follow Lisa's Jeopardy journey for the rest of the week click here . • COVER STORY | Fit & Happy Kids

It is a joy when we see our children fit and happy and enjoying all that life has to offer. Here, we highlight three local families whose children are active and healthy while still pursuing their current passion. Strength, Speed and Fitness Riley and Brady McCann, Naperville Naperville’s Fort Hill Activity Center is conveniently located near Ryan and Krista McCann’s home, which is great for their two teen boys who were looking to stay in shape for their various sports. Just over a year ago, Brady (15) and Riley (13) started the Center’s Teen Fitness University where they participate in three 60-minute sessions with a trainer to learn what equipment they should be using to train, how to use it properly, fitness etiquette and the benefits of the many other athletic activities they offer. Once the boys “graduated” from the program, they were eligible to become full-fledged members. “I like to train at the Center to stay in shape for soccer,” says Brady. “I go almost every day after school unless I have soccer practice.” Riley also plays soccer as well as basketball at the school. He likes to train at the Center to work on his speed and fitness. “I usually go about three times a week, but I also like going to open gym to play basketball with my friends,” states Riley. Both boys have found that training on their own time has helped them improve in their sports and gives them that extra edge. All four of their daughters have studied dance at the Naperville Park District starting at the age of five. Megan (15), the oldest, took ballet as her very first class, and a decade later, ballet is still the only type of dance she studies. Allison (12), Shannon (9) and Holly (9) have moved on from ballet and enjoy studying jazz technique. “We chose the Naperville Park District because they offered a large variety of dance classes and times which was helpful for our schedule,” says Jennifer. “The girls all love to dance, and we love what performing has done for their confidence.” “The teachers are nice at the park district, and we get a lot of personal attention,” says Allison. Megan adds that they like meeting dancers from different schools who they may not have met if not for dance. “You get to show everyone what you have learned after practicing for months! Also, the costumes are cool,” Holly and Shannon chimed in. For Kevin and Jennifer, they are happy that their girls stay active and have fun while they do it. Nerf War Hero Gus Pickelsimer, St. Charles Marcie and Eric Pickelsimer enjoy bringing their kids to the different activities offered up by the St. Charles Park District. So, when their youngest son, Gus, was looking for a great party idea for his 10th birthday, he chose the park district’s Nerf Party. “He is obsessed with nerf guns, like every 10-year old boy, and it was a great option,” says Marcie. The park district sets up shields and bases for nerf target practice, shooting drills, and undercover training exercises. “My favorite part was when we did the team fight,” says Gus. “It was an epic battle. My dad even joined in the fun.” The set-up is a great opportunity for kids to run around, be active, tire-out and enjoy using their imaginations. Besides the Nerf Party, Gus likes coming to the park district for their summer camps and to play mini-golf. Along with these fun activities, he stays fit and happy by being an avid soccer player. “It’s my favorite sport,” states Gus. #GlancerMagazine #CoverStory #KidsTeens #HealthWellness #March152018 #MindyKyle #NapervilleParkDistrict #StCharlesParkDistrict #FortHillActivityCenter

  • CELEBRITY NEWS | Ginger Zee Set for Naperville's Anderson's Bookshop Event

ABC CHIEF METEOROLOGIST GINGER ZEE PRESENTS NEW BOOK AT NAPERVILLE EVENT Once upon a time, Ginger Zee breezed into town and broadcast local weather on Chicago’s NBC station, Channel 5. Her talents rained down and soon her sunshiny personality took Zee to nationally televised ABC’s “Good Morning America” as chief meteorologist, where she appears today. In 2016, fans also saw Zee’s impressive moves as a dance competitor on the popular show, “Dancing with the Stars.” And if all that excitement is not enough, Zee has added another title: author. Perfect for middle grade readers is Zee’s new children’s book, Chasing Helicity. It cleverly weaves a weather story, a character obsessed with natural forces and taps the important STEM movement. This is not Zee’s first foray into the book world. This past December, Zee released her revealing memoir, Natural Disaster: I Cover Them. I Am One. On Monday, April 30 at 7 pm Ginger Zee will share her new children’s title with local fans. This event will be held at Ratio Hall, 131 S. Loomis St. on the campus of North Central College in Naperville. Zee will speak about Chasing Helicity and follow with a booksignng line. Event tickets are available exclusively at GingerZeeAndersons.brownpapertickets.com . About the Book Helicity is well aware that her name is unusual - kind of like Helicity herself. The word Helicity means to spin, and for as long as she can remember, Helicity has been fascinated by the weather. The weather is Helicity's escape from her own reality - may that be school, her father's strict discipline, or her brother's imminent departure for college where he's all set to play football. One fateful day, Helicity and her horse head out on a long ride to take a break from life at home. Even with her vast experience with weather, Helicity is unprepared for the elements she faces. The choices Helicity makes before, during, and after that storm will have a lasting effect on her family and her future. About the Author Emmy Award-winner Ginger Zee is "Good Morning America's" chief meteorologist, reporting on the nation's weather throughout the morning broadcast. Since joining ABC News, Zee has covered almost every major weather event and dozens of historic storms. She broadcasted from the devastated Jersey Shore during Hurricane Sandy, the Colorado floods and wildfires, and covered the wreckage from tornados in Moore and El Reno, Oklahoma. Zee's love of adventure does not stop at studying the atmosphere in the center of the storm. She para-hawked in Nepal, para-glided from the Himalayas to the Andes, dove with sharks in the Bahamas, rappelled 27 stories down the exterior facade of the Wit Hotel in Chicago, plus has gone ice boat racing and surfing. She competed on “Dancing with the Stars,” season 22, and finished third. She lives in New York City with her husband and two sons. About Anderson’s Bookshop Ginger Zee’s upcoming visit is part of Anderson’s Bookshops’ calendar of special author events. Anderson’s Bookshops specialize in book sales, author events, book signings, and building a sense of community, learning and fun. The store has been helping Naperville readers for six generations. • LIFESTYLE | West Suburban Coach Moms Share their Stories on Hard Work & Balance

AMAZING LOCAL MOMS WHO DO IT ALL, INCLUDING COACHING KIDS Hailing as college athletes from the University of Michigan and University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Erin Neiman and Kristen Corning can both easily be nominated as Coach Moms of the Year with their full-time careers, house-full of children, and coach’s cap. Erin is a Talent & Organization Development Specialist at Astellas Pharmaceuticals working an average of 50 hours per week, and Kristen is a registered nurse at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva. Erin also plays in a women’s soccer league, while Kristen is an active member on a women’s, as well as a co-ed softball team. Erin has two teenage children and Kristen has three young kids. Erin has been Head Coach of the Naperville Premier League boys’ soccer team for the past 6 years, and Kristen has been the Head Softball Coach at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove for the past year. So how and why do they do it all? “I started coaching so that I could provide my son with a team environment where he could play soccer with his friends and we could make sure that fun and the love of the game was the focus,” Erin says. “I am proud of the relationships that I’ve established with the boys on the team. They’ve changed and learned incredibly over the years and I am grateful to have played an integral role in their childhood, teaching them the value of hard work, positive attitude, teamwork, strategy and drive.” Growing up playing softball, basketball, and volleyball, Kristen says softball helped shape her into the person she is today. “I had many great memories from the sport and I wanted to continue to play a role in young women's lives,” she says. Both women credit their husbands for helping them manage it all from helping with household chores and running the kids around, to assisting with coaching responsibilities on the field. Erin says she also uses an App to manage the team activities and attendance and plans meals and rides each Sunday to make sure the week goes as smoothly as possible. In the end, it’s the validation from former players that keeps them going. “Just last month an alumni player told me that she was lucky to have me in her life,” Kristen shares. “It was reassurance that I was meant to do this!” -Kristen Kucharski #GlancerMagazine #Lifestyle #LocalWomen #March152018 #KristenKucharski #KidsTeens
