  • TEEN TIME | Geneva BFFs Share on Friendship & Being Sisters

SISTERS & BFFs WHO SHARE SO MUCH GENEVA– There’s an old saying, “Because I have a sister, I’ll always have a friend”. Izzy McFadden (17) and her sister Mia (14) are fortunate to know this all too well. The pair considers each other their truest and most dedicated best friend even though Izzy attends Geneva High School and Mia attends Geneva Middle School South. “Both Middle school and High School can be demanding for social and academics, we both lean on each other in both situations,” Izzy says. “The best part of being close with my sister is knowing that we will be forever connected and share life experiences for a long time to come.” They have enjoyed cheering together at Cheer Alliance in St. Charles, surfing in Puerto Rico and Southern California, eating together at Livia in Geneva, and water activities at Heritage Harbor in Ottawa; but most of all, they are so proud of forming Humanateen as a team. HumanaTeen, a non for profit, was created to bring together teens who want to make an imprint on the world through service, fundraising, and outreach by supporting causes, communities and events worldwide. “We have raised money for insulin to Puerto Rico, purchased gifts and needs for a Friends of KCAC family, and just took a group of our friends to Chicago to hand out essential needs bags to the homeless,” Izzy says. The girls are so grateful for their family and friendship that will last a last time. –Kristen Kucharski, Photo by Mike Catuara #GlancerMagazine #KidsTeens #BFFs #June2018 #LocalWomen #KaneCounty #June12018Kane #Geneva

  • TECH TIME | Apps, Macs & More– Downers Grove Teens Share

FEATURING GILLIAN BRAUN & LILY NIELSEN OF DOWNERS Gillian Braun of Downers Grove North High School (DGN) says technology is the future, and with the ever expanding need for code for things like data analysis, engineering, even artistry and design, people are seeing an ever expanding need for code across fields, opening up opportunities for young people to explore their passion in a variety of ways. “There are many jobs that you can go into if you are interested in technology,” Lily Nielsen says. She also attends DGN and is a member of the DGN Women in STEM Club with Gillian. “You could work for a tech company like Google or Amazon, go into computer programming or computer security and work on keeping companies online information safe.” The opportunities to explore different types of technology are abundant. In their STEM Club they work on all sorts of projects and activities throughout the year to help encourage young women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. Next year they will be working with an organization called Girls Who Code to encourage young women to pursue their interests in computer coding and technology. “For something a little bit more specialized, there is the option to work on lighting, sound, and stage mechanics for the school’s plays, musicals, and concerts,” Lily says. “North also has their own radio station, and in the WDGC Radio Club, students can learn how to use real radio equipment, and even DJing if that’s something you are interested in.” Picking out a computer to practice all your tech skills is a continued debate of Mac v. PC. “Both computers will definitely last you through an undergraduate degree, and both have pros and cons,” Lily says. “It ultimately comes down to comfort with the hardware and software used, and of course, the price tag as Macs tend to be more expensive than PCs.” In the end of course, Gillian says teens still love their apps. They still use the popular social apps like Instagram, Snapchat, GroupMe, and Twitter, because they are fast and easy ways for teens to stay connected; but also love Buzzfeed, Netflix, Hulu, and Spotify for music and movies. But beyond the fun apps, teens are using them for homework. Lily loves Quizlet for flashcards and DESMOS so she can input any function and get an accurate graph to use to help solve problems. –Kristen Kucharski #GlancerMagazine #TechTime #KidsTeens #KristenKucharski #June12018DuPage #DuPageCounty

THESE LOCAL TEENS ARE AWESOME – EACH SO TALENTED IN THEIR OWN WAY These days there are so many options and opportunities in the schools and the community for teens to explore. Its not hard to find an outlet for whatever passion drives them, and they are accomplishing big successes! We found a few of these teens from our neighborhood and asked them to talk to us about all their amazing achievements. Frankie Henson of St. Charles Pictured Top Right St. Charles East High School student, Frankie Henson is achieving great things in the arts. This year, being her eighth and final year of dance at Dance Dynamics, she won first place for her solo at the final regional competition and grabbed the title, Miss Senior Inferno Dancer, an award that required competing with an audition and an interview. She will be taking this dance now to the national competition. “Dance has taught me that no matter the opinions of the judges, what really matters is finding self-pride in giving it my all,” says Frankie. “The lesson has been very applicable to other aspects of my life – no matter if others appreciate my work or not, what matters is the passion I feel for the work itself.” Dance, however, isn’t her only passion. Frankie is also the lead singer for a band, plays guitar, takes photographs and helps organize her school’s variety show. If you thought that wouldn’t leave her much time for academics, you would be wrong, as she won both Illinois State Scholar and National Merit Scholar Commemorate awards for her academic scores. She is well aware that none of this could be made possible without the support of her parents and instructors and is incredibly grateful for all of these opportunities. –Mindy Kyle Brianna Vestal of Sugar Grove Pictured Top Left Brianna Vestal’s passion is definitely cheer. She has dedicated her life to the physical and mental discipline that is required, often sacrificing many of the common teen outings and experiences some of her other friends participate in. Being a part of her All Star Cheer Team (Thunder) takes an extreme amount of commitment and time, but it was all worth it when this year, the team competed and took top place at events around the country to earn them a bid to the USASF Cheerleading World Championship held at the ESPN Wilde World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney Resort. The result? Placing 6th out of 49 teams in the world in their division (Small Coed 5)!“This accomplishment has taught me that nothing is handed to you,” says Brianna. “You have to work hard for it through all the pain, tears, blood and sweat.” Through the process, Brianna ended up in and out of the doctor’s office for injuries, and it inspired her to want to learn more about how to help athletes with preventative measures. “I want to become a physical therapist or an athletic trainer,” she says. “My dream is to go around the world and help people in need of physical therapy.” And of course, she is looking forward to cheering at whatever college she attends. –Mindy Kyle #GlancerMagazine #CoverStory #CoolTeens #MindyKyle #June12018Kane #KaneCounty #SugarGrove #Kaneland #StCharles

Amanda Brennan of Naperville Top Left Amanda Brennan, a Senior at Metea Valley High School in Naperville, has been a Girl Scout since kindergarten. Over the summer of 2016, she accomplished her Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor in Scouting. For her Gold Award project, she wanted to find a way to share her love of music with children in the area that may not have the chance to be exposed. She proposed the idea of a “Summer Music Camp” to the directors at Bridge Communities, an organization which provides transitional housing and other services for homeless families in DuPage County, and they loved the idea. “I was connected with elementary music teacher, Shelly May Hutchison, who helped me write lesson plans and loan instruments for the camp,” says Amanda. In July, for four Saturday mornings, she helped fifteen Bridge Communities children experience the joy of music. At the conclusion of the camp, Amanda rented a space and encouraged them to create a recital. “Music helped them take their minds off the stress of homelessness,” says Amanda. “I was thrilled to give this gift to the kids.” Amanda is a Tri-M Music Honors Society member and plays euphonium with Metea’s Wind Symphony, trombone with the Pep Band, and has been a member of the Marching Mustangs for four years and Color Guard Captain for three. Music fills her life, but she also takes a break from it to be Editor-in-Chief of Metea’s Yearbook. –Mindy Kyle Jack Romero of Naperville Top Middle A musician at heart, Jack Romero, a sophomore at Benet Academy, has thrown his passion and dedication full throttle into the music world as a vocalist. He recently was inducted into the School of Rock Allstars. Allstars is the highest level of achievement for a School of Rock student and represents less than the top 1% of the students worldwide. Jack’s Band, Jack Romero & the Genies auditioned and were accepted to play at the House of Blues for their Bringing Down the House Live Showcase. This is a program for talented musicians, ages 13-19, to connect with industry insiders through interactive workshop sessions and showcase talent on legendary stages nationwide. Up to eight all-teen bands are selected to participate in each city. Including Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New Orleans. “It was important that I worked hard and had the drive to succeed,” says Jack. “The most important thing I have learned, though, is to never give up!” After auditioning for the Chicago Academy for the Arts, he was accepted and now will be completing his junior and senior year of high school at CAA. He released his first extended play record (EP) last fall with hopes of having his next one released this summer. There is no doubt that he is on the road to follow his dreams. –Mindy Kyle Trevor Carter of Glen Ellyn Pictured Bottom Middle It is spring, and many high school juniors are starting to receive their ACT test results for college applications. Trevor Carter, a Junior at Glenbard South High School was one of those students logging in online to view his score. Triumphantly, he found he had scored a perfect 36! He knew all his hard work had paid off. “Achieving a perfect score was not an overnight success, but rather years of staying focused,” says Trevor. “No goal is unreachable. There is a lot of support out there if you take advantage of it.” Trevor uses his strong work ethic and dedication to excel in many fields. He is a member of the Glenbard South Math Team, qualifying for ICTM Math State as a Freshman, Sophomore and Junior. He is a club swimmer (Wheaton Swim Club) and recently achieved three top eight finishes at the Illinois Swimming - Senior State Championship. He is currently ranked 12th in Illinois. As a change of pace, Trevor has a passion for music and has studied the piano for the last nine years. With his musical talent, he is able to volunteer and help out with select worship services at his church. Future plans for Trevor? “My journey doesn’t end here. I will take my work ethic into college to pursue a degree in a Medical or Engineering field.” –Mindy Kyle Zac Lendino of Naperville Pictured Top Right Paid summer internship doing something you love? Yes, they really do still exist. Just ask Neuqua Valley High School 2015 graduate, Zac Lendino. He is currently attending the University of Missouri (Mizzou) as a junior, studying Parks, Recreation, and Sport with an emphasis in Sport Management. He is looking forward to strengthening his managerial skills with this awesome opportunity. “I approached the opportunity for the Tournament Coordinator Internship with the IJGA on a common job search engine as I was browsing for a summer internship,” Zac says. “The application process started with applying for the position online, followed by a phone interview, and then the job was offered a few weeks later.” As a Tournament Coordinator, his internship responsibilities with the IJGA will include organizing and managing junior tournaments throughout the state of Illinois, including a few tournaments in other surrounding states. Zac has always loved golf, and has been playing since he was 10 years old at junior camps at Naperbrook Golf Course. In 2012, he began working at the Bolingbrook Golf Club as a Range Attendant maintaining the driving range by picking up the balls, cleaning them, and restocking the shelves. When he came to Mizzou, he picked up a job at Columbia Parks & Recreation and currently works at their two courses, L.A. Nickell Golf Course and Lake of the Woods Golf Course, during the academic school year. Zac encourages other students to check online postings for internships. This is his second! He worked as a Chicago Cub’s Security Services Ambassador throughout the 2017 season. His responsibilities included checking bags at the entrance and monitoring different areas throughout the stadium to ensure the safety and security of all the fans at Wrigley Field on Cubs game-days and during concerts. He hopes to one day be working in the Front Office of a Major League Baseball team. –Kristen Kucharski #GlancerMagazine #CoverStory #CoolTeens #DuPageCounty #Naperville #GlenEllyn #June12018DuPage #MindyKyle #KristenKucharski

  • WEST SUBURBAN VIP | Meet Judy Hsu

WEST SUBURBAN MOM & NEWS ANCHOR FOR ABC-7 CHICAGO SHARES ON CHILDHOOD, LIFE AROUND TOWN & HER FAVORITE INTERVIEW Judy knew she wanted to pursue journalism as a career when she joined the high school newspaper. Since she always loved learning about people and exploring what’s going on around her, Judy thought reporting for the school paper would be exciting. “I actually watched ABC-7 news at 4pm every day after school and thought, ‘I wonder if I could do that one day’, and today I am anchoring the exact same newscast that I watched as a child – it’s truly a dream come true,” Judy says. “That gives me goosebumps when I think about it still.” Judy anchors ABC-7 Eyewitness News 11am with Terrell Brown and the 4pm news with Rob Elgas. Additionally, Judy hosts a long format interview segment that airs on Sunday mornings called "Newsviews". Although she is in the limelight and has interviewed some very famous people, including Oprah, President Obama, Mike Ditka, Jane Seymour, and Joan Rivers, the interview that impacted her the most was a little boy raising money for an experimental cancer treatment. “I remember asking him what he was looking forward to do when he was better. I thought he would say “playing with friends”, but his answer was, “I just want to see my mommy happy”. In the end, they did raise enough that day for his treatment, but the little boy passed away just before he was able to make the trip. “It just reminds me every day how precious life is… how special families are… and how the stories we tell can really make a difference,” Judy shares. “In this case, we helped the family raise enough money… but we just couldn’t give the little boy any more time.” Judy knows how priceless family time is - she has four children of her own and their hugs help her through those tough stories. In west suburbia, she is just another gal on the block; sometimes a soccer mom, Little League mom, Boy Scout mom, or ballet mom. She believes in teaching her children the values of trust, honesty, and a strong work ethic. Even while raising four kids and working full time, Judy also finds time to volunteer at the DuPage Children’s Museum, Bridge Communities, Walk the Walk for Autism, Naperville’s Lantern Festival, and so many more. The Hinsdale mom loves the variety each day brings and the ability to meet many different people from all walks of life. –Kristen Kucharski, Photo by Mike Catuara #GlancerMagazine #WestSuburbanVIP #SoCelebrity #JudyHsu #ABC7Chicago #DuPageCounty #Hinsdale #June12018DuPage #June12018Kane #LocalWomentoKnow #LocalWomen

  • TECH TIME | Apps, Macs & More, St. Charles Teens Share

FEATURING ISABELLA MAKI & NIKKI AGARWAL OF ST. CHARLES Because of the rise in the use of technology, coding has become very popular among teens, according to Nikki Agarwal of St. Charles North High School. “Coding is basically what makes it possible to create websites, apps, and computer software,” she says. “We are constantly using our phones, tablets, computers, etc. for our everyday tasks, and coding our own programs allows us to further customize our user experience.” Nikki is an active member of the Fox Valley Girls Coding Club in Geneva, along with fellow St. Charles North student, Isabella Maki. They also have the opportunity to take various technology courses at school, such as AP Computer Science, Engineering CAD, and Aerospace; as well as participate in the school’s Computer Science Club. Students with a passion for technology may pursue careers such as Computer Programming, Data Analysis, Web Developing, Cybersecurity, Engineering, etc., and can get a taste of these types of jobs by participating in camps such as the Girls’ Adventures in Mathematics, Engineering, and Science (GAMES): Aerospace Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, that Nikki participated in last summer. With all these camps and courses, the computer you own becomes an important tool. “The biggest difference between a Mac and PC is the operating system,” Nikki says. “Mac's run on Mac OS whereas PC's use Windows; both have their own strengths and weaknesses, but personally, I own and enjoy my Mac.” Isabella also is biased and loves her MacBook Pro for writing papers and creating apps and websites; but knows many people happy with Microsoft Surfaces as well. For traditional school purposes, like writing papers, she doesn’t believe the type of computer is really that important. On the other hand, if you doing lots of coding and/or gaming, then she believes your computer should be well-equipped. She says most current college students in Computer Science use Macs and PCs equally, but many have a preference for Macs. In the end of course, Isabella says teens still love their apps. They still use popular social apps like Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, and Twitter; but she says LinkedIn is a necessity if you are seeking a future internship. Other hot apps include Netflix for movies, HQ for quick money and VSCO for artsy pics. Beyond the fun apps, teens are also using them for homework. Isabella loves Photomath, Mathway, Slader, Duolingo, and Quizlet. –Kristen Kucharski #GlancerMagazine #TechTime #KidsTeens #KaneCounty #June12018Kane #KristenKucharski

  • CELEBRATING 90 YEARS | Hotel Baker to Commemorate Anniversary with a Derby Themed Gala & Firewor

JUST IN! FIREWORKS ADDED TO THE LINE-UP OF SPECIAL SURPRISES ST. CHARLES – A Derby themed gala is planned for June 2, 2018 to commemorate Hotel Baker’s 90th anniversary. The invitation-only event is both a celebration of this important milestone as well a tribute to the original owner Colonel Edward Baker, who opened the hotel doors on June 2, 1928. Joe and Rowena Salas, the current owners of Hotel Baker, have chosen the Derby theme as a tribute to Colonel Baker, who had a passion for horses, especially his beloved horse Greyhound. While event dress is cocktail attire, guests are encouraged to wear hats or fascinators as a way to participate in the theme. Guests will be treated to music by The Champagne Kings, the Tom Linsk Band and pianist Johnny Burnett, along with Derby-inspired culinary creations from the culinary team, led by Executive Chef Kieth Willis. In partnership with the St. Charles History Museum, there will be a mini pop-up exhibit paying tribute to the hotel’s history, to Colonel Baker, and to his beloved Greyhound. Exhibit items will include some of Colonel Baker’s personal belongings, as well as other items that have historical significance for the Baker family and the hotel. Guests will also enjoy a couple of additional surprises that the Salases plan to announce closer to the event including a short fireworks display at about 9:30 pm, and will be visible from the Main Street Bridge and surrounding area, weather permitting. Hotel owners Joe and Rowena Salas chose to announce the surprise early so that the community can come out and enjoy the fireworks if they wish. According to Rowena Salas, this event has been a community collaboration in many ways, with many local businesses and organizations coming together to help make this celebration extra special. Hotel Baker is at the center of downtown St. Charles, and is a significant landmark for visitors and locals alike. The Salases appreciate the special role the hotel has played in the community and want this event to honor that significance as well as the vision that Colonel Baker had so long ago. Salas said of the past fifteen years, “It has really been a wonderful journey for our family. Never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined how it has changed our lives. We love the hotel. A lot of love and passion go into keeping the hotel and Colonel Baker’s vision alive.” Another favorite saying of Baker regarding the hotel is, “It’s my pride and joy.” Salas said that, for her family, “It’s been our pride and joy to keep it alive.” For more information on Hotel Baker, visit www.hotelbaker.com #GlancerMagazine #ArtsEntertainment #TravelLeisure #HotelBaker #StCharles #KaneCounty #TrendingNow

NEUQUA VALLEY CHEERLEADERS WHO SHARE SO MUCH NAPERVILLE–If you go to Neuqua Valley High School, you don’t typically say the name Natalie without Renna or vice versa. The two girls have been best friends since the fourth grade when they met at Graham Elementary School in Naperville. Renna led the pair to Naperville Elite Allstars (NEA) and they developed their passion for competitive cheerleading which has continued to the Neuqua Valley Varsity Cheer Team. • KITCHEN MAKEOVER | A Beautiful & Simple West Suburban Transformation

A TERRIFIC TIMELY TRANSFORMATION The kitchen is the heart of the home, so remodeling can feel overwhelming unless you are working with Tupelo Lane Designs, known for completely transforming kitchens in less than a week! A women-owned and operated business, the team at Tupelo Lane Designs made up of all women, puts efficiency and professional quality together while refinishing cabinetry with artistic surfaces such as glazing, pin striping, color washes, etc. The owner, Michele Fenton of Naperville, is a Master Craftsman and has trained under world renowned cabinet finishers while continually taking classes to stay ahead of the trends and techniques. “We thought this 14 year old kitchen was a perfect candidate for cabinetry refinishing,” Michele says. “Their cabinets were in good shape and the layout worked for the family, but they wanted an update; so, for less than a ¼ of the price of new cabinets they got a beautiful new kitchen.” The kitchen featured here is located in west suburban Sugar Grove. As you can see by the before & after photos, the homeowners goal of wanting a much brighter look was achieved. Additionally, they wanted more contrast between the floor coloring and the cabinets, which was also accomplished. With the popularity of home improvement shows and Pinterest, Michele says clients usually have clear, realistic expectations, but often have difficulty choosing colors. Tupelo Lane Designs has years of experience color consulting and can help find the perfect color that works for the home. The color shown here is Simply White and it was chosen based on the lighting in the home and the way the sunlight shines in at different times of day. The homeowners for this featured kitchen had to do minimal work to prepare for the transformation. Cabinets did NOT have to be emptied, as Michele’s team only needs a couple of inches around the interior frames, so it only tooke them a ½ hour tops to get ready for the design team to come in and get started. “We simply love everything about our new kitchen. It turned out exactly as we hadhoped for and could not believe how comfortable the price was. From start to finish Tupelo Lane Designs were in and out of our home in 4 days– we were simply ecstatic on that 5th day. We added a few updated accessories and our kitchen was complete – appearing bright, beautiul and updated.” said the homeowner. • PLAN A KITCHEN FOR FUN | The Kitchen Master Can Help Design a Kitchen for Action

A NEW KITCHEN BUILT FOR ENTERTAINMENT NAPERVILLE–Whether you like to host your family or your entire neighborhood, your kitchen should be ready for action at all times. If you’re thinking about renovating your kitchen to become the perfect setting to entertain, here are some ideas to make it happen from the design team at The Kitchen Master. Boost Your Storage- No matter what your entertaining style, you’ll need additional shelves, drawers and cubbies for china and glassware, serving pieces and silverware, tablecloths and napkins, candlesticks and bread baskets. Even if your idea of a party is paper plates, plastic forks and bottles of beer, plan a way to stow the burger buns, bags of chips and condiments until it’s time to serve. Designate Kitchen Zones- Whether your new kitchen is large or small, multiple work stations will serve crowds or accommodate a crowd of cooks. Nothing gets in the way of a party faster than having to elbow others out of the way! Create Traffic Lanes -Think about circulation. If you plan to have crowds in your kitchen, widen the aisles and try to create a logical path for guests who come to help or hang out. Islands and peninsulas are great solutions, keeping gawkers at bay while encouraging conversation. Set Up Serving Counters- Score an “A” in your party kitchen with lots of counter space. A large island will double as a buffet table. A beverage center along one wall will eliminate congestion. Include a bar sink, an ice maker and under-counter wine chiller or refrigerator. Show Off Your Stuff- Think about the things you love. If you have a collection of antique milk glass or old cast-iron cooking pots or grandma’s teacups find a way to display them. Your collections are great party props! Defy Tradition- Today, there are specialized tools and appliances to fulfill all needs. Install a steam oven and a warming drawer if that sounds like an “entertaining” idea. Add an under-counter beer keg or a wine tap. Consider an indoor grill if you can’t make it through the winter without a perfectly grilled steak. Whatever you deem important for your party room, our professional designers would love to help you transform your kitchen into your vision of a great space. Call us and let’s get that party going. Since 1977, The Kitchen Master has assisted thousands of homeowners design and build every kind of kitchen imaginable.
