FIGHT CAUGHT ON CELL PHONE SHARED WITH AUTHORITIES

On Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2024, at 11:43 a.m., the School Resource Officer (SRO) at Wheaton Warrenville South High School was alerted to a potential medical emergency involving a male student in the building’s commons area. The SRO determined the student had been involved in an alleged physical altercation with at least one other male student. School nurses rendered aid to the student and Wheaton Fire Department paramedics were summoned by the SRO. The student was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation and treatment.

With the assistance of the school administration, at approximately 12:30 p.m., a second male juvenile student was identified as having been involved in this alleged altercation. Another student captured a cell phone video of a portion of this incident and subsequently turned it over to police and school administration.

The Wheaton Police Department has been investigating this incident and has been in contact with the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, which has reviewed this incident for potential charges. Two male juveniles are facing charges of Aggravated Battery on Public Property, a Class 3 Felony. The juveniles have not returned to school and are scheduled to appear in Juvenile Court on March 7, 2024.

The Illinois Juvenile Court Act does not allow the identities of juveniles investigated, arrested, or taken into custody to be released. All juvenile law enforcement records which are confidential and may not be disclosed to the general public or made widely available.

“The life, health, and safety of the students in our schools remain a top priority,” Wheaton Police Chief Princeton J. Youker said. “The Wheaton Police Department supports criminal charges for any individuals who commit acts of violence in our community to hold them accountable.” The Wheaton Police Department is committed to working with Consolidated Unit School District 200 officials to keep Wheaton’s students, staff, and schools safe.
