PIZZA CITY, USA: 101 Reasons Why Chicago is America’s Greatest Pizza Town
CHICAGOLAND–Chicagoan Steve Dolinsky, 13-time James Beard Award-winning food reporter and current ABC7 Chicago “Hungry Hound” host was tired of reading yet another poorly researched listicle of the “7 Hottest Pizzas in Chicago”.
He decided to tackle the project of finding the best pizzas in the city and suburbs. Over the course of a year, he managed to sample pizzas from 185 locations, whittling it down to his top 101 spots. “My family was incredibly supportive,” says Steve. “Not only going with me, but also putting up with pizza almost every night for months.”
Steve’s research led to two major epiphanies: first of all, Chicago is a “thin” town, since most of the pizzerias in the region specialize in “tavern-style” pizza that is square-cut, thin and crispy. Second, the reason the Windy City is “Pizza City, USA” is because there are ten distinctive styles of pizza as opposed to New York’s five. The book features Steve’s top choices in every major category, separated by city and suburbs. This is his first book, but he would love to do another. “Probably not another pizza book, though,” he says. “I’ve had enough cheese, sausage and tomato sauce to last a lifetime.”
