- HOMELESS WOMEN GET HELP Local Organization Helps Find Employment
JOY NEVER BELIEVED SHE WOULD BE HOMELESS– BUT THE IT HAPPENED. After working 10 years at the post-office, an abusive relationship led her to losing her job. Although she was able to break away from her unhealthy significant other, without any income, she lost her apartment. DuPagePads was her last option. “I knew one of my first steps would be to find a new career,” Joy recalls. She began working with DuPagePads Career Employment Solutions program to help her assess her strengths, skills and life experiences to assist her with finding a new and permanent position. DuPagePads career specialists and volunteers assisted Joy with writing cover letters, creating a resume and developing interviewing skills. “I was interested in becoming a Pharmacy Technician and had some training already in it, so I was happy to learn DuPagePads had connections in the field,” Joy shares. As a result of Joy’s diligent work and DuPagePads 74 community employers in the area, she was able to obtain a new position as a Pharmacy Technician, making $14.00 an hour. “I love my new career and DuPagePads has given me so many tools and resources to succeed at it, including my STEP apartment,” Joy says. Working as a Pharmacy Technician the 2nd shift at a local company, Joy is unable to use DuPagePadsInterim (Overnight) Housing sites and would have nowhere to sleep during the day. As a result of a generous grant, DuPagePads Short-Term Housing Employment Program (STEP) provides temporary housing through local motels for those employed in overnight positions so that they can be successful at their careers and save funds for their own apartment. Joy smiles, “I don’t know what I would have done without the help of DuPagePads. The staff helped me set goals and work toward them. The best thing about being employed…I have pride again and I know there is a light at the end of the tunnel.” This story is featured online at DuPage Pads. #GlancerWeekly #CaringSharing

- A "WINNING WEEK" FOR DUPAGE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM Prestigious Awards Given
MUSEUM HONORED TO RECEIVE PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS & MENTION The first week of May 2016 has brought DuPage Children’s Museum shares in three prestigious awards: 2016 Chrysalis Remodeling Award, AIA Chicago Small Projects Awards 2016 Citation of Merit, and Naperville Education Foundation’s Celebrating Inspiration Award. The Museum also received an honorable mention in the Education category for Vision Design Awards 2016. Back in January 2015, DuPage Children’s Museum (DCM) was forced to close temporarily when a water pipe burst and caused extensive damage to all three floors of the Museum. Consistent with its reputation for innovative creativity, DCM turned its three levels of flood damage into an unprecedented opportunity to re-imagine and redevelop many of its most popular custom-designed exhibits. Industry professionals, including Architecture Is Fun; Graycor Construction Company; Chicago Scenic Studios, Inc.; and others, were instrumental in the redevelopment and reconstruction of a re-imagined Museum, This week, Architecture Is Fun and Graycor Construction Company won the 2016 Chrysalis Remodeling Award for their collaborative effort in restoring the Museum, designing at high-speed, phasing construction, maintaining safety and structural integrity, and staying true to the original high quality of the early learning institution. Together they designed sustainable branded learning environments and integrated beauty and art with the help of renowned artists Emmy Star Brown, Molly Z, and Luftwerk. Over 80 entries were judged on overall design, the creative use of space and materials, and the degree to which the project enhanced the original structure. Ken Kanline, Director of the Awards Program, which recognizes the nation’s best remodeling and renovation work, commented, “To win an award in this highly competitive category is quite an achievement.” On Thursday, May 5, 2016, as part of AIA Chicago’s Small Project/Small Firm awards program that recognizes high-quality work from small architectural firms and exceptional small local projects, DuPage Children’s Museum received an AIA Chicago Small Projects Awards 2016 Citation of Merit for their Pyramid Bench. Collaborating closely, Architecture Is Fun, Inc. designed and fabricator Chicago Scenic Studios, Inc., constructed the super-scaled Pyramid Bench, which creates unique spatial understandings for the many visitors to DuPage Children’s Museum. A juror noted that the bench, which is part public space and part public engagement, was "an active object that encourages exploration and movement.” The goal of this award program which is presented by the AIA Chicago Small Practitioners Group is to raise public awareness of the value that architects bring to small projects and to promote small practitioners as a resource for design excellence. This week DCM was also notified that they received an honorable mention in the Education category for Vision Design Awards 2016 in Floor Focus Magazine’s April 2016 edition. The Vision Design Award for Education is awarded for design innovation and excellence on a unique application of flooring materials. Architecture Is Fun's commitment to technology and sustainability is reflected in the artful design of trusted products from Forbo Linoleum. The new public thoroughfare increases visibility, keeps the Museum clean, while the snazzy fuzzy flooring, Flotex by Forbo, delineates zones of interactivity, absorbs sound, and captures allergens and dust. To end the week,” DuPage Children’s Museum was presented with the Celebrating Inspiration Award at the Naperville Education Foundation Spring Breakfast: Building a Passion for STEM. “This has been another “winning week” for this amazing early learning institution. During the reconstruction of the Museum in 2015, we were faced with many incredible challenges and it took massive amounts of talent with a very aggressive timeline to re-build the re-imagined Museum. We all know the saying, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” and the lemonade just keeps getting sweeter. DCM is honored to be part of the incredible recognition and we are so proud of all of the industry leaders that contributed to the reconstruction. Special congratulations to Architecture Is Fun; Graycor Construction Company; and Chicago Scenic Studios, Inc. Thank you to the Naperville Education Foundation,” said DCM’s President and CEO Sarah Orleans. Learn more about DuPage Children’s Museum at dupagechildrens.org and follow DCM on Facebook and Twitter. - TOUCH SOME TURTLES At Cosley Zoo's Turtle Day, Saturday May 21
HAVE THE KIDS EXPERIENCE SOME HANDS-ON LEARNING Textbooks, lessons, and presentations are fine ways of learning. But sometimes you need to be hands-on, discovering something new by doing something new. At Cosley Zoo’s Turtle Day on Saturday, May 21, 10am-2pm, guests can interact with turtles and tortoises, participate in turtle-themed activities, and see the zoo’s turtle conservation program in action. The Chicago Herpetological Society will bring turtles for live interactions. And the first 50 guests to stop at the Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles booth will score a swag bag full of items from the new movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, plus get a chance to win a family four-pack of tickets to a special advance screening in Chicago ahead of the film’s June 3 release. The zoo’s Turtle Day is inspired by World Turtle Day™, a global celebration held every May 23 and sponsored annually by American Tortoise Rescue (ATR). Founded in 1990 by husband-and-wife team Marshall Thompson and Susan Tellem, ATR is a nonprofit aiming to “provide for the protection of all species of tortoise and turtle,” according to ATR’s website. In its 26 years, ATR has rescued more than 3,000 turtles and tortoises, rehabilitating and returning them to their natural environments. ATR also currently houses about 125 captive-bred tortoises at its Malibu, California headquarters. This type of conservation effort may sound familiar to regular zoo guests. Since 2000, Cosley Zoo has helped revive DuPage County populations of the Blanding’s Turtle, which was placed on the Illinois endangered species list in 2009. Partnering with the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, the zoo has so far released nearly 2,000 juvenile Blanding’s Turtles into local habitats through its Blanding’s Turtle Head Start program. Zoo educators will be on hand during Turtle Day to discuss how the zoo gives Blanding’s Turtles a head start, and why they need our help. For the first year of life, Blanding’s Turtles have soft, flexible shells that provide little protection. Predators, along with illegal collection from the wild, collisions with automobiles, and shrinking wetland habitats, make it difficult for newly hatched turtles to survive. Head-starting a Blanding’s Turtle involves providing a suitable, carefully controlled habitat safe from predators, plus a complete diet that includes natural items the hatchlings would find in the wild and constant monitoring for proper growth. This meticulously monitored setup helps the juvenile turtles grow faster, making them better able to survive outside the controlled environment. While head-starting is an essential component of the wider Blanding’s Turtle Recovery Program, other critical elements must also be in place, including habitat restoration, safe passage over roadways, and public education about this vital Great Lakes species. “These varied components are what make a partnership to help the Blanding’s Turtle so important,” said Sue Wahlgren, director of Cosley Zoo. “Each partner can bring their expertise to the table, working to establish a sustainable population of the Blanding’s Turtle in DuPage County.” Turtles and tortoises are part of a scientific order called Chelonii, and biologists often refer to them collectively as chelonians. Many know they can retract their necks into their shells and—thanks to commercials—they tend to move slowly, especially when crossing a road or purchasing internet access. Natasha Fischer, Cosley Zoo’s Education Manager, shared her favorite turtle fact. “Many turtle species exhibit temperature-dependent sex determination, where the temperature at which the eggs are incubated determines whether the hatchlings will be male or female. Eggs incubated at lower temperatures hatch as males, and eggs incubated at warmer temperatures hatch as females,” she said. Turtle Day is free with regular admission. Wheaton Park District residents, zoo members, and all children (birth to 17) are always free. Nonresident adults (18-54) are $5 per person and nonresident seniors (55+) are $4 per person. To learn more about Cosley Zoo’s Turtle Day, conservation education, and other programs and events, visit cosleyzoo.org, call 630.665.5534, or stop in at 1356 N.
