- COMMUNITY | Telecommunicator of the Year Named at The City of Naperville
Naperville Announces Telecommunicator of the Year National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week will be observed April 9-15 NAPERVILLE–Each year, as declared by Congress and presidential proclamation, the second full week of April is dedicated to the men and women who serve as public safety telecommunicators and dispatchers. The City of Naperville recognizes the vital link emergency telecommunicators serve between the public and emergency responders. The Naperville public safety telecommunications group encompasses everyone involved from the first moment a call is connected to our Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) and City Dispatch centers, until the last line has disconnected and help has physically arrived. These individuals work tirelessly to ensure that when others need help, someone answers the call. Along with honoring all employees of the Naperville Police Department Communications Section, the Public Safety Answering Point is pleased to announce that Telecommunicator Theresa Brock was named 2017 Telecommunicator of the Year. Brock, who has been a telecommunicator with the city since September 2013, was nominated for the honor by a coworker, who wrote: “Having come to the City without prior dispatch experience, her overall hard-working attitude, going above and beyond for calls, rapport with personnel and willingness to help her coworkers has molded her into a well-rounded dispatcher.” Additionally, Brock serves as a Lead Telecommunicator and was selected and trained as a member of the first Naperville Tactical Dispatch Team. “On a daily basis, Theresa demonstrates her dedication to serving the Naperville community, as well as her commitment to her coworkers in the Public Safety Answering Point.” Communications Manager Kalah Considine said. “She excels in this profession and is very deserving of the 2017 Telecommunicator of the Year award.” This year the City of Naperville will celebrate National Telecommunicator Week on April 9th-15th. - BUSINESS | 9 Differences Between Generation Z and Millennial Employees
As They Enter The Workforce, Employers Will Have To Adjust To New Generation There’s a new generation in town and it’s one that employers better get ready for, because it’s 23 million strong and will be flooding the workforce by the end of the decade. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Generation Z; a confidence-filled group that doesn’t want to miss a thing, has the shortest attention span of any generation and isn’t quite as open as its predecessors – the millennials – from whom they learned that not everything needs to be shared online. “If you try to treat those in Generation Z (born in the mid to late ‘90s, mostly to Generation X parents) like you treated Millennials (born in the early ‘80s to mid ‘90s, mostly to Baby Boomer parents), it will backfire on you,” says Matt Stewart, co-founder of College Works Painting ( www.collegeworks.com ). “This generation is unique. And now they are starting to enter the workforce.” Thanks to his role at College Works Painting, which offers internships that help undergraduate students gain real-life business management experience, Stewart has gained a first-hand look at both the Millennials and Generation Z. And there certainly are differences between the two: 1. According to best selling author and generations expert David Stillman, you won’t find those in Generation Z frequenting Facebook or Twitter as much as their predecessors. Keenly aware of software monitoring, they are more likely to share their worlds on apps such as Snapchat or Instagram. Often dubbed Digital Natives, Millennials are much more likely to share their lives in the open on platforms such as Facebook. 2. Being culturally connected is more important to those in Generation Z than to Millennials, with many more Gen Zers suffering from FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) than Millennials. 3. Stewart doesn’t see this as a hard and fast rule and says the experience Generation Z employees have at College Works Painting – and the impact they pride themselves on having – is much the opposite of FOMO. An example that Stewart says other companies can follow. 4. Those in Generation Z have grown up with smart phones, tablets, 3-D, 4-D and 360-degree photography just to name a few of their norms. According to Stillman, keeping the attention of a Gen Zer is harder than ever. Their average attention span is eight seconds, compared to the 12-second attention span of Millennials. 5. Millennials are driven to succeed by helicopter parents who watch their every move, while Generation Z finds encouragement from parents who encourage independent thinking, want them to achieve on their own and are fed up with not receiving equal pay for equal success at work. 7. According to Forbes, social entrepreneurship is important to Generation Z, a group that is driven to volunteer and choose a career in which they can make a difference. On the other hand, there are those who hope the Millennials will become more civic-minded as they grow older, but it’s something that hasn’t been witnessed as of yet. 8. Generation Z children were raised in classrooms that focused on diversity and collaboration. Despite this fact, they tend to be more private than Millennials, perhaps as a result of seeing many of the downfalls of previous generations in the Great Recession. 9. Because those who are part of Generation Z feel pressure to gain corporate experience early, they are competing with Millennials who are more likely to wait to gain that same type of experience. The good news for Millennials, who are more likely to chase jobs in the corporate world, is that 72 percent of those in Generation Z wish to take what they learn and apply it to their own business, versus 64 percent of Millennials who have the same goal. About Matt Stewart Matt Stewart is co-founder of College Works Painting ( www.collegeworks.com ), which provides real-world business experience for thousands of college students each year. The award-winning program also offers high-quality house-painting services for homeowners. #GlancerMagazine #Lifestyle #Business #TechTime #TrendingNow

THE FOUR SEASONS IN CHICAGO If you are visiting Chicago or just in need of a girls’ getaway, a stay at the Four Seasons Chicago is a must. Every few months, Brooke and I have a fun tradition of spending a mother-daughter weekend in Chicago, and the Four Seasons is the ideal hotel to pamper both teen and mom! For a high end hotel, it is truly warm and inviting--there is nothing pretentious about the staff, yet the aura of the hotel exudes elegance, luxury and refined class. From the moment we arrive, the welcoming smiles of the doorman foreshadow the familial atmosphere abundantly present in every niche of the hotel. The location is also ideal, as just a few steps away and we are shopping and dining on Michigan Avenue. What we love as well is that the lobby is on the 7th floor which gives you the assurance of safety and seclusion. The suites are pristine, airy, spacious and luxurious. There are so many highlights of our hotel room but the view takes the cake. Seeing the city skyline along with the beauty of Lake Michigan always leaves us in awe. At night, the twinkling lights are mesmerizing. Besides the magnificent view, we are in full agreement that there are no beds on the planet more comfortable than the beds at this hotel. Brooke describes them as sleeping on the fluffiest marshmallows. The bathroom is also on point--spa decor and details, plush robes hung on the back of the door, along with a beautiful porcelain tub and glass shower. There is even a bathroom scale for those who apparently are not eating deep dish while in town. Needless to say, the scale was the only amenity in the bathroom that we left untouched. The Spa Each trip, Brooke and I enjoy massages and manicures. Prior to our massages, we spend time in the sauna or lounging poolside. We’ve both agreed, hands down, these are probably the best massages and manicures we have ever had, and we are very particular about being properly pampered. If you need a rejuvenating weekend, The Four Seasons won’t disappoint! ABOUT THE BLOGGERS Naperville mom and teacher, Kristen Kainrath and her teen daughter, Brooke, are a mother-daughter travel-blogging team who have always shared an incurable case of wanderlust. Their goal is to inspire girls to follow their passions and appreciate the diversity of our global community. Follow them on their journeys at www.pedisnpassports.com and watch for their monthly article inside Glancer Magazine in 2017. #GlancerMagazine #TravelLeisure #PedisNPassports #April2017

DON'T LOSE THE LUSTER, MAINTAIN NATURAL STONE COUNTERS – Durability is one reason homeowners choose natural stone for their kitchens and bathrooms, but the greatest appeal is often the sheer beauty of the material. Maintaining that luster and shine requires a bit of effort, but the ability to enjoy the unique character of natural stone makes it all worthwhile. It’s important to understand the shine on granite and other natural stone is not from applying a wax, but a natural shine that reflects a rigorous process. After being quarried from the earth’s surface using a combination of diamond wire cables, drills and even dynamite, these stone blocks are taken to a factory for processing. A giant gang saw using diamond blades slices the blocks into a calibrated thickness, similar to a giant bread slicer. The next step is a polishing line, where blocks pass under diamond polishing heads that apply thousands of pounds of pressure per square inch. Here, progressively finer grits bring out the natural polish of the stone. It’s this factory finish that enhances the inherent characteristics of natural stone – the veins, swirls and crystals. From there the slabs are bundled and shipped to local stone manufacturers and installers to be cut to a homeowner’s specifications. Once installed, you can maintain that luxurious factory finish with these tips from the experts at Granite Gold. Clean often. Even miniscule particles could have a detrimental effect on your natural stone. However, it’s important to avoid common cleaners and abrasives as they can break down the protective seal and result in expensive repairs or replacement. Also avoid using an abrasive scrubbing pad, which may leave unsightly scratches. Rely on scrubbing pads designed specifically for natural stone or look for “non-scratch” on the packaging. “Common, everyday household cleaners aren’t formulated for granite, marble, travertine or any other natural-stone surface,” said Lenny Sciarrino, CEO and co-founder of Granite Gold Inc. “They will dull the natural finish – the great luster and shine everyone enjoys – and lead to costly repair or replacement.” Seal frequently. Frequently sealing natural stone surfaces maintains maximum surface protection, penetrating stone surfaces to provide superior, long-lasting resistance to staining, etching and soil buildup. It’s easy to test when to reseal. Pour water (about 3 inches in diameter) on the surface and let it sit for 30 minutes. If the water beads, then the stone remains sealed. However, if a dark mark or ring is created by the water, it is time to reseal. Be sure to repair any etching or stains before the sealant is applied. Polish regularly. Polishing not only brings out the stone’s natural beauty, it reinforces the protective seal and provides ongoing protection against water spots and fingerprints. One time-saving but effective solution after sealing is Granite Gold Clean & Shine, which provides the cleaning power of the line’s Daily Cleaner and the luster from the Polish in one easy-to-use formula. You can find the products nationwide at Walmart, Lowe’s, Home Depot, Bed Bath & Beyond and Amazon; check the store locator at GraniteGold.com. STEPHANIE’S LAW TINA ESTOPARE, NAPERVILLE/PLAINFIELD Do NOT ever think it will NOT happen to your family or someone you know. These are the strong words of advice from Tina Estopare after her 15 year-old daughter Stephanie was sexually assaulted by the neighbor who lived directly behind them in Plainfield, IL; a 30 year-old father of 3. He was charged and convicted of two counts of Misdemeanor Battery. Stephanie testified in her two day trial and he was found GUILTY of both counts. The Estopare family asked the Judge to register him on the Sex Offender Registry and they were told he could NOT because in the State of Illinois, Battery is NOT considered a sex offense. “Illinois law provides that any person who is found guilty of a sex offense must register as a sex offender pursuant to the sex offender registration act.....except for Misdemeanor Battery, even when found guilty in a court of law with proof without a reasonable doubt,” Tina says. “So now no one will know what he did. He is allowed to work at any public school, coach, go on field trips, work at Park Districts, YMCA'S, Daycare Centers, Bus Driver, etc. because he bypasses the background check of NOT being on the registry.” The incident has totally changed the Estopare’s life and they have since moved out of state because it was too difficult to be living behind the perpetrator. Tina is leading the efforts to have “Stephanie’s Law” entered into the legal system. “There is a loophole in our judiciary system that needs to be addressed and closed,” she says. “Stephanie's Law–HB816, mission is to protect and enhance the life of every child who has the courage to battle sexual abuse.” Her daughter, Stephanie finds solace knowing her hero mom is taking care of passing the bill so she can focus on college and a career in Nursing. -Kristen Kucharski #GlancerMagazine #CaringSharing #HeroMomstoKnow #KristenKucharski #LocalWomen #April2017
- 7 SPECTACULAR | Tips to Shake Up Your Lifestyle
7 TIPS TO SHAKE UP YOUR LIFESTYLE If you’re looking for ways to bring some extra energy to your lifestyle and shake up your routine as spring rolls around, you may be surprised to find how seemingly simple changes can make a big difference. Sometimes all you need is a little change in your daily routine or a small adjustment to jump-start a fresh take on life. Ideas don’t have to be big to be impactful. Here’s 7 Spectacular Ways to Shake Up Your Lifestyle this spring..... 1. Sign up for a fitness class. When your workout regimen feels repetitive, it’s hard to stay motivated. One way to wake up your workout is to enroll in a new class, where you can learn new moves and put your muscles to work in new ways. 2. Make your down time productive. Your idle time may be minimal, so it’s all the more reason to fill those hours with productive activities that make you happy. If you’re looking to take on a new hobby, now’s the time to commit to your newfound passion, whether it’s understanding the ins and outs of digital photography or volunteering for a cause close to your heart. 3. Improve your oral health. Maintaining your overall health includes your mouth too. An option like Colgate Total Advanced Health Mouthwash can help you take charge of your oral health. This mouthwash is the first oral care product to contain dual-layer technology that combines freshening power with germ killing ingredients – simply shake to activate and see the results in the sink. Learn more at www.ColgateTotal.com. 4. Invest in a quality mattress. Giving yourself a good night of sleep is one of the most important things you can do to improve your overall health. That’s because your sleeping hours are when your body works to repair and rejuvenate from the tolls of daily living. If your mattress is outdated or saggy, upgrade for better rest and better health. 5. Explore a new look. A fresh makeup shade or a new hairstyle can give you confidence and put you on a path toward looking as great as you feel. Changes don’t have to be bold or dramatic to make a difference. Simply switching up your eye shadow or lipstick can transform your look for an extra boost inside and out. 6. Redecorate a room in your home. Whether it’s a favorite space or a room you avoid because it needs some TLC, changing the appearance of your environment can create a place for you to feel at home, and that’s simply good for the mind and soul. Create an oasis for relaxing or a more productive work space and you’ll not only see the results, you’ll feel good when you’re using the space, too. 7. Make more time to socialize. Breaking up your regular schedule can give you the variety you need to unplug and enjoy the lighter side of life. Make plans with friends for no special reason; simply enjoy the company and unwind. Adding some pep to your step doesn’t have to mean major changes. Just a few adjustments can have you breaking out of an old pattern and stepping into a healthier lifestyle with ease. Remember to visit your favorite west suburban businesses that are featured inside Glancer Magazine to help you in achieving your spring goals. From workout hot spots to fabulous dentists, they would love to help you! A GIFT FROM MY SON Despite the challenges I've faced, from very minor to some rather giant ones, I have had my faith to lean upon. I’ve had the privilege of learning that today is a gift, tomorrow is not promised to anyone, so live it with joy. That lesson came at the hand of my 11-year old son who truly faced every day with this in mind. With that, we established The Ross K. MacNeill Foundation (R33M), devoted to ending pediatric brain cancer, to fulfill a promise made to my son, Ross, who passed away in 2013. The Foundation has raised over $733,761, making our mission to end pediatric brain cancer through research advancements possible. www.R33M.org -Kim MacNeill, Wheaton THERE IS PROMISE.... When my daughter, Ainsley, was born with Angelman syndrome (AS), a rare neurological disorder that causes debilitating seizures, speech impairment, and balance and motor issues, I knew I would stop at nothing to find a cure. I founded FAST (Foundation for Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics) in 2008. The foundation has been blessed with millions of dollars in support, and we have brought together a multi-disciplined team of more than two-dozen scientists from multiple universities and pharmaceutical companies to join forces on a focused path to a cure. We are working to bring life-changing treatments for AS to clinical trial within two years. I am empowered and strengthened every day by this hope and the generosity of those who continue to support us. www.CureAngelman.org −Paula Evans, Darien FAITH, FAMILY, COMMUNITY & COURAGE These are the beacons that guide me and inspire me. As founder of Autism Family Foundation (AFF), a non-profit charitable organization, these are the ties that bind our foundation to the community we humbly serve here locally in Illinois. It all started 12 years ago, as a personal journey for my husband and I, as parents of our son with autism. Today, the impact of our journey continues to be felt by the countless number of families, who are recipients of the resources and services provided by AFF. Our mission is to support families with children with special needs. Whether it’s our annual special needs holiday event, or the Spring Tee-It Up For Autism Golf Outing, the goal is to make a difference. www.autismfamilyfoundation.net -Wanda Malone, Aurora To share your message with our readers: www.glancermagazine.com/womenofstrength #GlancerMagazine #LIfestyle #LocalWomen #WomenofStrength #April2017 #Darien #Wheaton #Aurora

NAPERVILLE, APRIL 4 – At only 28 years old, Lilly Singh has amassed quite a following. Her YouTube Channel, “Superwoman,” launched in the fall of 2010, now boasts over 11.1 million subscribers! Singh is one of the highest paid YouTube stars. She has accumulated many coveted social media awards. And now the Canadian-born personality has added one more achievement: author. Her new book, How to be a Bawse: a Guide to Conquering Life will be celebrated at a special Anderson’s Bookshop program on Tuesday, April 4 at 7 pm. This event will take place at Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave. on the campus of North Central College in Naperville. Singh will discuss her new book and then fans will participate in Singh’s photo line with a professional photographer. Each ticketholder will be presented with an autographed copy of Singh’s featured book. Tickets are required and available exclusively at LillySinghAndersons.brownpapertickets.com . Singh’s new book, How to be a Bawse, is packed full of her signature wit and bold attitude. Fans will get a moment to meet this unique and feisty star, AKA Superwoman! ABOUT THE BOOK From the 2017 People’s Choice Award winner for Favorite YouTube Star comes the definitive guide to being a bawse: a person who exudes confidence, hustles relentlessly, and smiles genuinely because he or she has fought through it all and made it out the other side. Funny, smart, and insightful, Lilly Singh is an actress and comedian who covers topics ranging from relationships to career choices to everyday annoyances. It’s no wonder she’s garnered more than a billion views. But Singh didn’t get to the top by being lucky—she had to work for it. Hard. Now Singh wants to share the lessons she learned while taking the world by storm, and the tools she used to do it. How to Be a Bawse is the definitive guide to conquering life. Make no mistake, there are no shortcuts to success, personal or professional. World domination requires real effort, dedication, and determination. Just consider Singh a personal trainer for your life—with fifty rules to get you in the game, including • Let Go of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out): Temptation will try to steer you away from your goals. FOMO is just a test of your priorities, a test that a bawse is ready to pass. • Be Nice to People: Treat niceness like an item on your daily to-do list. People will go out of their way to help and support you because you make them feel good. • Schedule Inspiration: Lack of motivation isn’t permanent or a sign of weakness. Expect it and proactively schedule time to be creative. • Be the Dumbest: Challenge yourself by surrounding yourself with people who know more than you do. It’s a vital way to learn and improve. Told in Singh’s hilarious, bold voice and packed with photos and candid stories from her journey to the top, How to Be a Bawse will make you love your life and yourself—even more than you love Beyoncé. (Yes, we said it!) WARNING: This book does not include hopeful thoughts, lucky charms, or cute quotes. That’s because success, happiness, and everything else you want in life need to be worked for, not wished for. In Singh’s world, there are no escalators, only stairs. Get ready to climb. This program with Lilly Singh is part of Anderson’s Bookshops’ calendar of special author events. Anderson’s Bookshops specialize in book sales, author events, book signings, and building a sense of community, learning and fun. The store has been helping Naperville readers for six generations. Additional locations include Downers Grove, at 5112 Main Street (630)-963-2665 and La Grange, at 26 S. La Grange Rd. (708) 582-6353. A toy shop, Anderson’s Toyshop, at 111 W. Jefferson Ave., in Naperville, opened last year. Key to Anderson’s success has been special literary events, like the Tuesday, April 4 program celebrating Lilly Singh. #GlancerMagazine #ArtsEntertainment #Naperville #TrendingNow
