  • PEDIS-n-PASSPORTS | The Beauty of Niagra Falls & Why It's a Must-Visit

NIAGRA FALLS: Part One I can’t believe my mom waited this long to venture to Niagara Falls. She hasn’t visited the falls since she was a child and was just as excited as I was to head there this past July. It was basically the midway point while traveling to visit family on the East Coast. If you think a weekend in Niagara Falls would be a fun adventure for yourself or your family, here’s our helpful itinerary: We left Naperville, at 4am (my mom’s a morning person) and arrived at the Oak’s Hotel at 2pm Eastern Time. The shining star of this hotel is the spectacular panoramic view of Horseshoe Falls. Our jaws dropped the minute we stepped foot into our room and drew back the curtains. Yes, there are fancier and pricier hotels to stay along Hotel Row with similar views, but for one night, the Oaks was absolutely perfect for us. The 14th floor also has an observation lounge with even better views than the rooms. We took the incline down the hill for $7/person. There’s a beautiful view from this gondola ride as well and we were fortunate to spy our first rainbow from here! Getting so close to the most powerful waterfall in North America was absolutely amazing! We just stared in awe for the longest time. In the course of two hours walking around, grabbing an ice cream cone and admiring the falls, the sky drastically changed at least five times from ominous stormy clouds to the bluest skies with expansive rainbows. We counted 14 rainbows in all! After hours of ogling the waterfall, we took the incline back up to hotel row to walk around and explore a bit more. Since it was a Friday, we were excited to see the Falls Illumination show and fireworks. We debated taking the incline back down for this but decided that the view from our hotel room would far surpass a ground level view. We were right! Seeing both the Horseshoe and American Falls illuminated by changing colorful spotlights, along with the fireworks display from our room was magical. This year-round feature began in 1925 and is definitely worth seeing! In the morning, we enjoyed a thrilling boat ride with Hornblower Niagara Cruises. Be prepared. You will get wet! Read about the second half of our trip to Niagara on the Lake in the Mid-March issue of Glancer Magazine and on our blog at at www.pedisnpassports.com ABOUT THE BLOGGERS Naperville mom and teacher, Kristen Kainrath and her teen daughter, Brooke, are a mother-daughter travel-blogging team who have always shared an incurable case of wanderlust. HERE'S WHAT KEEPS LOVE ALIVE FOR THESE WEST SUBURBAN RESIDENTS Lucky in love and best friends makes for happy days and a long lasting marriage. Meet 5 west suburban couples who share with us what keeps their love alive. Happy Couple #1 Mary Rose and Joel Widmer GENEVA–Joel and Mary Rose have been married for 6 years and have lived in the Western Suburbs since. They pray and worship together at New Covenant Bible Church; eat together at Burger Local, Barrel and Rye, Altiro, Wok N Fire, Doughocracy, and Puebla; learn together parenting their 17-month old, Adeline; and play together traveling all over from New York to Florida to Texas to California, as well as internationally to France, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, China, Vietnam, Japan, and best of all Italy, where Joel proposed to Mary Rose. While the couple loves to do fun things together like traveling, they thoroughly appreciate doing everyday things side by side. Joel is a web designer and Mary Rose is a marketing consultant; as well as, the owner of Mary Rose Photography, a local wedding and portrait company. They consistently work on projects together, including building websites for local businesses. These two lovebirds also actually enjoy cooking and cleaning together too! When weather permits, they take in outdoor activities such as biking the trails around the Fox River or having a picnic at Pottawatomie and Island Park. You might also find them floating in an inflatable boat down the Fox River! Joel and Mary Rose are each other’s biggest cheerleader, greatest critic, and the inspiration behind all romantic and dreamy sensibilities. Happy Couple #2 Ralph and Marilyn Bava LISLE–Ralph and Marilyn became high school sweethearts during sophomore year co-ed dancing at Bloom High School in Chicago Heights, IL. Through their 52 years of marriage, they feel blessed to be sharing love and life together while enjoying the sights and sounds of New York City, the panoramic vistas of northern California, the sunny beaches of Florida and southern California, and biking in Galena. They enjoy making special memories on annual trips with their grandkids at Wisconsin Dells, Springfield, New Salem, Naples, and Michigan’s eastern shore; and also formed their own fan club, cheering them on at their various sporting events. Amazingly enough, they find time for every family occasion and manage to ensure quality time for each other on international adventures including in France, Italy, Turkey, Sweden, Finland, Latvia, Russia and Poland. Even when home in Lisle, these two thoroughly enjoy their retirement at local venues with walks and events at the Morton Arboretum; history and house tours at Cantigny; an ice cream treat at the Book Nook; and dinner at their favorite restaurant, Chinn’s. Somehow, Marilyn still finds time to volunteer at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lisle, read her favorite book, and babysit her newest grandchild; while Ralph actively serves on the Board of their Naples Condo Association, is landscape liaison for their Lisle Homeowners association, and enjoys local Cruise Night events. These two are the perfect example of living life fully with the one you love most! Happy Couple #3 Jeffrey and Mary Ann Segebarth GLEN ELLYN–They met at The Hudson Club in Chicago over 17 years ago, lived in Lincoln Park for the next 10 years, until discovering Glen Ellyn 6 years ago. They have built their relationship on the simplicity of loving, and laughing, and laughing a lot! Jeff and Mary Ann are compassionate, fun, driven, and generous, and enjoy sharing new experiences with their two sons, Ryan (11) and Scottie (9). “We traveled a lot before they were born and it's even better being a foursome and seeing their excitement when we see somewhere new,” Mary Ann says. “Our newest family member is our Mini Golden Doodle, Cubbie QB.” As a couple, they enjoy date nights at Fire and Wine, as well as trips to the city for Cubs Games, museums, and plays; and Christmas Dinner at Gibson’s is an annual tradition not to be missed. They treasure building memories with their kids at the Morton Arboretum, Centennial Beach, and Sunset Pool; as well as, finding new places to go during time off of school - most recently returning from a ski trip at Crystal Mountain in Michigan, and soon to be a trip to Atlantis in the Bahamas for spring break. Jeff’s job as a software executive keeps him quite busy, but he is committed to coaching his boys’ football, basketball and baseball teams; while Mary Ann remains active chairing St. Petronille’s school auction and The Boosterthon Fun Run. Work hard to play hard keeps these two loving life! Photo Credit: Vande Woestyne Photography Happy Couple #4 Mark and Mary Goetz NAPERVILLE–It was 41 years ago that Mark went to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia to work as a consultant to Aramco, the Arabian American Oil Company (now Saudi Aramco); subsequently, a year later, Mary began teaching for the Aramco Schools. She joined the women's softball team that Mark had coached just the year prior. What began on the Saudi Arabian softball fields has continued into a love story and amazing adventure for 40 years, the last 30 in Naperville. Together they maintain a relationship motto of "keep moving and eat healthy" which is easily achieved through their extensive overseas travels visiting five of the seven continents and over 50 countries. Most recently, they traveled to Switzerland and Italy where they rode bikes along the Rhine River and hiked in the Ebenalp area and Cinque Terre. Additionally, they have hiked in the Himalaya Mountains, having a yak and sherpas to assist with their belongings. With one son, daughter-in-law and three grandchildren in NY and a son in Oregon, they explore those areas while visiting. They've gone on biking adventures throughout New England, the Midwest and Colorado. Mark has also found time to run 21 marathons, including 5 Boston marathons. Locally, they enjoy working out at Lifetime Fitness with Jen Hoeft. Mary loves yoga as well and they enjoy cross country skiing and walking. They both love to volunteer and have been involved in scouts, church activities and homeless shelters. Soon they will be joining a humanitarian trip to Haiti. Thoroughly living a life they love. Happy Couple #5 Jona Triner and Larry Sepulveda NAPERVILLE / DOWNERS GROVE–Living next door to each other in Downers Grove, Jona and Larry’s parents were good friends; however, due to the eight year age difference, they really didn’t hang out when they were younger. Life took them on different paths as they matured, but Larry had always remained in Downers Grove with his two sons and took care of his parents until their passing. Jona also stayed in the west suburbs, residing in Naperville with her two teen daughters. Then in early 2016, Larry came up as a match on eHarmony, and the pair reconnected via Facebook. With four teenagers, full-time jobs, and separate households, it wasn’t easy finding time to date, but the two managed to enjoy casual dinners and music at local places like Emmett’s in Downers Grove, Johnny’s Blitz in Westmont, Uncle Julio’s in Lombard/Oakbrook, Freedom Brother’s Pizzeria and Alehouse in Plainfield, and The Bavarian Lodge in Lisle. During the warmer months, the couple enjoys time on the open road via Larry’s Harley, most often attending charity rides in route. “We also enjoy trips to Green Lake Wisconsin to visit my parents, who sold their Downers Grove home in 1998,” Jona says. “The kids enjoy boating, tubing and fishing when there.” This year, they will be doing their first road trip with all four teens to Marco Island, FL for spring break; and they will end the summer on a high when the pair ties the knot on August 18, 2018! #GlancerMagazine #CoverStory #February152018 #Lifestyle

  • BUSINESS | Illinois Winery Supports Meteoric Growth with New Winemaking Facility

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS – Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants, a lifestyle brand that was ranked as the 34th largest winery in the US by Wine Business Monthly in its annual ranking this year, is pleased to announce the successful expansion and relocation of its winery to Woodridge, Illinois. The state-of-the-art winery, located at 9016 Murphy Road, is nearly triple the size of its former facilities and is designed to keep pace with the company’s rapid growth and 300,000-member-and-growing Wine Club while maintaining stringent standards for quality. “The winery is the lifeblood of the Cooper’s Hawk experience,” says Tim McEnery, Cooper’s Hawk CEO and Founder. “While the new facility was designed to increase capacity, our primary focus is to maintain our hands-on approach to winemaking as we grow. This expansion enhances our ability to serve Wine Club members and guests by enabling continuous innovation while supporting collaborative Wine of the Month initiatives with the world’s leading vineyards, winemakers and culinary taste-makers.” The 125,000-square-foot winery supports an initial production capacity of approximately 685,000 cases, with significant room to grow, and includes a 60,000-square-foot warehouse that can store approximately 300,000 cases. The company’s wine output has increased by nearly 40 percent in the last three years, and has more than doubled since the former facility opened in Countryside Illinois in 2010. The increased demand is owing to the opening of 30 restaurants in eight states over a span of 12 years, coupled with the related expansion of its Wine Club, which is the largest in the US. When McEnery opened his first restaurant in in Orland Park, Illinois in 2005, the winery was located in the lower level of the venue. Cooper’s Hawk made a significant investment in infrastructure, new equipment and personnel; the ultramodern facility employs industry leading bottling equipment which includes automated quality controls and gentle handling equipment to ensure that each bottle meets the company’s standards for product and packaging excellence. The company also invested in technology and processes that optimize wine quality by enabling extremely tight tolerances for temperature, oxygen exposure and more. McEnery collaborated with a team of internal experts with decades of combined winemaking and production experience to design and construct the ultramodern Woodridge facility. The team at Cooper’s Hawk worked with local architectural and construction management firm Dobbins Group to design the facility while Krusinski Construction Company executed the actual build. Cooper’s Hawk Winery ferments and ages wine from some of the best vineyards across the globe, which enables restaurant guests and Wine Club members to try classic domestic varietals, as well as those from countries like Chile, Argentina, France and Italy – all at a reasonable price point. In addition to producing nearly 50 varietals, the winery produces twelve unique Wines of the Month every single year. Cooper’s Hawk has won over 400 wine awards, including various Platinum, Double Gold, Gold, and “Best of Show” awards in numerous national and international wine competitions. Cooper’s Hawk will be celebrating the opening of its new winery with a ribbon cutting ceremony on February 20, 2018. Cooper’s Hawk executives will be joined by Mayor Gina Cunningham and several members of Chamber630, as well as representatives of prominent area companies. About Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants Founded in 2005 by CEO Tim McEnery, Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants is built upon the belief that food and wine hold the power to forge lasting connections. A lifestyle brand focused on creating memorable moments that enrich lives, Cooper’s Hawk is the 34th largest winery in the U.S. and home to over 300,000 Wine Club Members. The concept is a fusion of familiar elements – winery, modern casual restaurant, Napa-style tasting room and artisanal retail market – that has combined to create an entirely new hospitality experience. Cooper’s Hawk has won over 400 awards for its wine and has been named the Official Wine of the Screen Actors Guild® Awards through 2020. Cooper’s Hawk wines are sourced, blended, aged, bottled and distributed exclusively through Cooper’s Hawk. #GlancerMagazine #Business #Woodridge #CoopersHawk

  • COVER STORY | Loving Life, 60 & Better

AREA RESIDENTS WHO HAVE EMBRACED THE GOLDEN YEARS WITH ENTHUSIASM Loving life means living your days worry free and filled with joy, doing what you love to do. We set out to find local area residents who are doing just that. Meet three West Suburban residents who, in their own way, have found paths after 60 to help them live their healthiest and happiest lives. Theater Enthusiast Cynthia Baranowski ELBURN–Ever since Cynthia Baranowski was young and saw her first musical, Okalahoma, she has been enchanted by musical theater. However, it was only after retirement that she was able to have the time to attend shows whenever she wanted and signed up for subscriptions to the Paramount Theater in Aurora and The Mac at College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn. Along with her subscriptions, Cynthia will also add in a few Drury Lane and Lyric Opera House performances to round out her year. Amongst the many types of shows she attends, the musicals are still her favorite. “I am drawn to the musical because of how the words and songs move the story line forward,” says Cynthia. “I love watching the dramatic and musical talents of the performers and the orchestra.” Among some of her favorite shows in the past few years are Million Dollar Quartet, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, My Fair Lady and Porgy and Bess. Besides the theater, Cynthia enjoys good movies, going to bars with live music, visiting public gardens and museums and exploring different cities. She recently helped her mother-in-law check off a bucket list item for her 83rd birthday. She and her mother-in-law and her mother-in-law’s family rented jet skis together on Shaefer Lake to celebrate. She believes the key to living the life you love is to make sure you are participating in activities you truly enjoy and taking a few risks. Photo Submitted Six-Time Cancer Survivor Nora Gorman NAPERVILLE – In 2010, Nora Gorman went for her routine mammogram and was diagnosed with cancer in her right breast. This is where her cancer journey all started. Since then, Nora has been diagnosed with six cancers, has had seven different surgeries and three different chemotherapy treatments. Her second cancer was an aggressive kind of ovarian cancer that caused her to have major surgery and 4 ½ months of chemo. Her third cancer was diagnosed in her left breast stage 0, and she underwent lumpectomy. Then in 2014, Nora was diagnosed with her fourth cancer in her right neck lymph nodes. “This is the cancer I thought would end my life,” says Nora. “I saw my doctor’s reaction to the report and asked him if he was worried. He said he was, but he would do everything he could to make me live longer.” Since the neck cancer was inoperable, Nora went through three sessions of Cyber Knife radiaton therapy and eradicated the cancer. In 2015, she was diagnosed with her 5th cancer in her left rib cage and in 2016, her 6th cancer above her right shoulder. Her chemo for those cancers ended in June of 2016. Since then she has been in remission! The year 2017 was a great one for Nora. It was the first year in seven years she did not have to deal with another cancer or treatment. She is on a mission to help anyone going through cancer to keep hope alive. Her advice is to stay strong, keep being positive, pray like you have never prayed before, and live fully one day at a time! Photo Submitted by Edward Health Services Dedicated Yoga Practice Jo Anne Jurkovic WHEATON–Before joining CorePower Yoga in Glen Ellyn three years ago, Jo Anne Jurkovic had never tried yoga before and was not very interested in the hot yoga. Her daughter introduced the studio to her (which she had joined in Chicago), and after the two-week trial period, Jo Anne was hooked. She now makes yoga a regular practice, stating that it helps her live a better life physically and mentally. “Yoga sculpt classes are my favorite,” says Jo Anne. “I feel like I am getting stronger and focusing on different muscle groups with every class.” An avid runner that completes several 5-10K runs a year with her daughter, she finds the Hot Power Fusion class helps keep her muscles stretched and flexible. She usually finds time for her practice in the evenings during the week for a nice end-of-the-day release. “The instructors at CorePower are exceptional and keep me motivated and inspired in class. I am also motivated by just feeling better.” Besides the physical benefits, Jo Anne touts the benefits of the relaxation skills she learns during her classes. “Learning to focus on your breath during class is also something that I am able to use in my everyday life.” Jo Anne feels her regular practice has been a huge benefit to guiding her through the physical challenges of her senior years as well as enjoying all her activities with her family. SO MANY THINGS TO LOVE ABOUT THIS HISTORICAL BEAUTY Millennium Knickerbocker Chicago While many know Green Mill Cocktail Lounge was a spot favorited by mobster Al Capone in the 1920’s, Chicagoans may be surprised to learn the history of another destination frequented by notable personalities from the past century. Located in Streeterville just off of Michigan Avenue, the historic property now home to Millennium Knickerbocker Chicago has served lively purposes since its construction in 1927. Al Capone’s brother once ran a casino on the Penthouse Floor, and in the ’70s, the property had a stint as the Playboy Towers. The building housed the editorial and business offices of Playboy. The hotel has also hosted such luminaries as John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon and the Rolling Stones. Today, locals and visitors can sip on a dirty martini at Knickerbocker Chicago’s 1920’s-inspired martini bar and envision the lives of those who once walked the halls. The overall design of the hotel embodies “Old Chicago” with unique accents including ornate chandeliers and vintage furniture in the lobby. The hotel’s Crystal Ballroom, covered by a gold-gilded domed ceiling, exemplifies the design from the glamorous Roaring Twenties. For guests staying at the hotel, the property is conveniently located near the shops on Michigan Avenue, 360 Chicago Observation Deck at John Hancock and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
