- PEDIS-n-PASSPORTS | Indianapolis, a Perfect Place to Visit
THE CONRAD HOTEL IN INDIANAPOLIS Who Would Have Guessed? If you are like us and often need to just need a change of scenery, there’s an easy fix! Head to Indianapolis. Yup, you heard us correctly. We had zero expectations and were completely blown away. We made reservations at the Conrad Indianapolis, based on reviews on Tripadvisor. As we drove up to the valet, we could literally sense luxury spilling out of the hotel onto the street. Having stayed at many luxury hotels, there are five components we require to constitute a great stay: friendly and accommodating staff, beautiful spa and pool, luxurious suite, delicious food and an amazing view. Without a doubt, the Conrad Indianapolis was on point! The spa, pool and fitness center are five star quality. The suites are beautifully appointed with a complimentary pillow menu where you can custom order the type of pillow to meet your sleeping needs! The bathroom is so luxurious, with a separate shower, tub and TV. The Capital Grille Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and is apparently the only Capital Grille in the country that serves breakfast, so you know it had to be spectacular! Yummmmm. Beyond our basic criteria, this hotel is in the ideal location. When you step out onto the street you are right in the heart of downtown Indianapolis, which is a city that far surpassed all expectations. The cleanliness, energy, shopping, restaurants and architecture are incredible. I think we were most amazed by the latter; the beautiful balance of historical and modern structures. Monument Circle was truly surreal. For those history buffs, you will love the audio walking tour. Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument is stunning. The quaint cobblestone streets, horse drawn carriages, and trolleys added to the charm, and majestic fountain, reminded us a bit of the Trevi Fountain in Rome. Upon our return to the Conrad, I had to check out the incredible wine bar, Tastings. I have never seen a place like this. It is screaming “Girls’ Night Out” so ladies book a trip now! The Conrad Indianapolis is an absolute dream for a romantic retreat, girls’ ABOUT THE BLOGGERS Naperville mom and teacher, Kristen Kainrath and her teen daughter, Brooke, are a mother-daughter travel-blogging team who have always shared an incurable case of wanderlust. - BRINGING HARDWOOD FLOORS BACK TO LIFE | Buff & Coat Hardwood Floors
WHY BUFF & COAT HARDWOOD FLOORS Overtime, all wood floors start to look tired and dull after years of wear and tear. Buff & Coat was founded with the idea of making wood floor refinishing less invasive and more affordable. They simply buff away surface scratches and scuffs, make spot repairs as needed and then apply a new top coat of quality finish with a sheen chosen by the customer: i.e. satin, semi-gloss or gloss. When done, beauty is restored to the floor which will now have a new finish providing years of protection. It's perfect for someone thinking of selling their home or even before moving into a new home. The local Buff & Coat business was started as a small family business in Naperville in 2010. Today they are headquartered in Plainfield and service all of Chicagoland. Owner, Ray Horan, saw an under served market and brought his three decades of management experience and passion for excellent customer service to the Hardwood Floor Business. The company has received the EBSCO Best Pick Honor in 2014 and 2015, and was just recently awarded their fourth Angie's List Super Service Award. An honor earned by only the top 5% of contractors. Horan grew up in New York, married a Chicagoan and has lived with his family in Naperville since 1992. He is an avid sports fan who enjoys baseball history and trivia when not working on floors. His motto is: "Love your floor again!" -Submitted Buff & Coat Hardwood Floors www. - SPECIAL NEEDS NEWS | “Zoo for All” Inclusion Initiative at Brookfield Zoo
Brookfield Zoo Opens Sensory-Friendly Family Room and New Resource Center for Guests with Autism and Other Disabilities as Part of the “Zoo for All” Inclusion Initiative BROOKFIELD, IL – The Chicago Zoological Society (CZS), which manages Brookfield Zoo, is announcing the opening of a sensory-friendly family room as well as a new inclusion resource center at its Hamill Family Play Zoo that will help to make every family’s trip to the zoo a positive and inclusive one. The new low-sensory room offers a quiet environment for children who may need a break from the potentially overstimulating environment of a day at the zoo. The room includes fidgets and other sensory-support materials, comfortable seating, blackout curtains, dimmable lights, and access to Wi-Fi. It is a safe and convenient place to deescalate before children and families return to their zoo visit. Separately, the newly renovated resource center near the entrance of the Hamill Family Play Zoo provides useful information and tools to enhance a visit, including visual schedules, social stories, magazines, and noise-reducing headphones that are available to check out “Brookfield Zoo is committed to providing a positive, innovative, and meaningful experience for all of our guests,” said David Becker, senior manager of learning experiences for CZS. “We’ve developed the “Zoo for All” initiative to ensure the inclusion of children, adults, and families of all abilities in the activities offered at Hamill Family Play Zoo and throughout the entire zoo.” In addition, CZS hired an inclusion specialist, Lauren Reeder, who works with staff and volunteers to help them build the confidence and skills necessary to interact with and facilitate programs for individuals with disabilities. She also evaluates daily activities to ensure that all of the programming is inclusive for guests. Reeder, whose office is located in the Hamill Family Play Zoo, is available to families to help facilitate the unique and individual needs of a child or family member with a disability. “We’ve had an amazing response from families who have visited the Hamill Family Play Zoo and seen the new spaces,” said Reeder. "I’ve had parents say the addition of the sensory-friendly family room and resource center make them feel welcomed. And, even if they never use them, knowing they are available, conveys a strong message that the zoo cares for all of its guests.” Brookfield Zoo will host three open house events of Hamill Family Play Zoo's new features on March 17, April 12, and April 22. The open houses will include family-friendly events as well as opportunities to learn more about the “Zoo for All” initiative and programs at the exhibit, experience the new areas, and meet the play program staff, including the new inclusion specialist. Space is limited and reserved for families with children with disabilities. To register and to access additional information on the zoo’s accessible amenities, visit CZS.org/Brookfield-Zoo/Learning/Zoo-for-All. The Chicago Zoological Society has long been committed to ensuring full accessibility and providing a welcoming environment for everyone at Brookfield Zoo. In addition to the recent renovations at Hamill Family Play Zoo, CZS also offers multiple programs that train individuals with disabilities for employment and volunteer opportunities, continually works to create inclusive opportunities within current programs, and makes a concerted effort to make its grounds, pathways, buildings, exhibits, and programs accessible to all zoogoers. Funding for the new additions at Hamill Family Play Zoo was made possible in part by a two-and-a-half-year grant awarded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The funding will also support upcoming strategic initiatives focused on enhancing the exhibit’s messaging, educational programming, and public resources available to children, teens, and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. About the Chicago Zoological Society The mission of the Chicago Zoological Society is to inspire conservation leadership by connecting people with wildlife and nature.
