- PEDIS-n-PASSPORTS | Spreading Joy In Jamaica
TAKING ACTION TO POSITIVELY IMPACT THE LIVES OF STUDENTS GLOBALLY Last summer my friend, Gabi, told me about an amazing charity called Pack for A Purpose. (If you've followed previous posts you've read all about this incredible organization). I loved the idea of taking action to positively impact the lives of students globally, so beginning a book drive was the perfect idea. I would have never imagined in a million years that we'd collect 7,000 books and that I'd have the opportunity to actually visit the recipients of our donations. This trip to Jamaica has changed my life forever. It is so true that when you give, you receive so much more in return. On March 27th, 2018, my Mom and I headed for Ochos Rios Primary School to visit the students, teachers and staff where the books were donated. I had no idea what to expect and after our two hour drive from Montego Bay, we were immediately greeted with hundreds of smiles, joy, laughter, kindness, gratitude and friendship. Upon arrival, I was confused at first because it seemed as though there was a huge party going on at the school. I thought to myself that if this is their typical daily recess, I was immediately moving to Jamaica to attend school there permanently. We were informed that the school was having its yearly community carnival fundraiser. How lucky that we were visiting on this day! It was a blast. Three students had prepared a traditional African dance that they performed for us. It was incredibly beautiful and so much fun to watch. They even tried to teach me a few parts of the dance. You can check out these videos on our blog. Ochos Rios Primary has about 1,500 students and only around 10 desk top computers for everyone to share. They are not only in great need of technology, but could use any basic school supplies such as books, pencils, pens, rulers, markers, play dough, you name it. If you'd like to make a donation, please contact me at pedis.n.passports@gmail.com. I will be continuing to send as many materials and supplies as possible and will certainly visit the school again the next time we are in Jamaica. They are very excited to have a brand new Special Education Department and can use any supplies you'd be willing to donate. When I think of my own school district here in Naperville, I realize what a privilege it is to grow up with a great education. More importantly, it is everyone's humanitarian responsibility to give back as much as possible. While I certainly can't afford to buy laptops for all of the students in Jamaica, I can be an ambassador to the school and reach out as much as possible to bring forth awareness. I’m hoping perhaps local school districts here in our area will join me in my mission to change the lives of the students in Ochos Rios. Thank you so much for all who have already donated! You've touched so many lives. Together we can spread happiness. ♥ ABOUT THE BLOGGERS Naperville mom and teacher, Kristen Kainrath and her teen daughter, Brooke, are a mother-daughter travel-blogging team who have always shared an incurable case of wanderlust. 5 WAYS TO PREVENT SUMMER LEARNING LOSS School is out for the summer and your kids are ready to toss the books and have some fun in the sun. As much as you want them to relax and recharge you’re worried about them forgetting everything they learned during the school year. Summer learning loss is real and it is significant says College Nannies Sitters and Tutors. The first four to six weeks of a new school year is spent bringing students back to where they were when they finished. CNST say students score lower on standardized testing at the end of summer rather than at the beginning. High school students who take the PSAT, ACT and SAT tests in the fall are the most affected. Which is why students seek CNST for summer tutoring for these critical tests. If your child struggled during the school year summer is a great time to focus their attention on a specific subject. So, what can you do to keep them learning. We asked Sue Eggers, a Glen Ellyn mom, Differentiation Specialist and Hinsdale Teacher. 1. Read, read, read! Continue the routine of reading before bed. Bring books to the pool, on car rides and vacations. Take trips to the library or bookstores. Make sure reading is not just considered a "school" thing to do. Make it enjoyable and part of a routine which will create life long readers. 2. Summer journal writing. Practice narrative writing by describing your favorite summer days and summer vacations. You can even do this electronically by making your own books. My students love to write books on an app called Book Creator. It's so easy to use and they can draw their own pictures or use camera roll pics. Worth purchasing the app! 3. Math can be fun! Practice math facts while using sidewalk chalk. There are plenty of apps like Xtramath, a free facts practice app. Don’t "worksheet" them to death in the summer, but keeping up on facts and computation once in a while will help. Don't pre-teach what next year will bring; instead review the skills they need to have mastered for their next year to be more successful. 4. Let them cook with you! Learning to read recipes and measure ingredients is a great skill to teach. Talk about the various units of measurement we use daily in our kitchens, and how fractions help us measure correctly. 5. Learn at the zoo! Go to the zoo or a museum and have each kid think of a question or two they want to find the answer to while there. Once home see if this new knowledge leads to more "research!" They might be asking to go check out more books after their first set of questions lead to more inquiry. Want to know more about how to prep for ACT or SAT this summer? Check out your local office ( www.collegenanniesandtutors.com/locator ) for more information! ABOUT THE BLOGGER Glen Ellyn Mom’s Village is a local blog that was created by resident Alicia Donovan. - DR. MOM | Meet Dr. Catherine Rhim of Naperville
INTRODUCING WEST SUBURBAN DR. MOM– Dr. Catherine Rhim (DMD) How do they do it? Day after day? Many moms are often referred to as “super-moms,” being able to take on multiple responsibilities at once and conquering all just as superhero’s do. It is mind-boggling to others observing their lifestyle, confusing as to how they can handle work, family, friends, personal life, and more all at once. It is even more impressive to have one of the most competitive, demanding occupations as a doctor. There are multiple different jobs in the doctor field. DMD, or Doctor of Dental Medicine, is one of the most common. They have numerous responsibilities while on the job. A few include promoting oral health, diagnosing oral diseases, creating treatment plans to maintain or restore oral health, interpreting x-rays and diagnostic tests, monitoring growth and development of the teeth and jaws, and performing surgical procedures on the teeth, bone, and soft tissues of the oral cavity. While handling all of those responsibilities and more as a dentist, it is truly remarkable to be a mother as well. It takes a special person to be handle both titles, doctor and mom. I spoke with Dr. Catherine Rhim (DMD) of Valley View Dental in Naperville about the lifestyle of handling both obligations. The word “hectic” seemed to come up a lot in the conversation. Dr. Rhim has two daughters, ages 6 and 12. While her husband is often out of town, recently getting a new puppy, demanding job, and active children Dr. Rhim explained “I feel like I can’t breathe, like I’m always out of breath.” Dr. Rhim’s typical day varies by the difference of working or not, working at VVD on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and every other Saturday. “I get up, make the girls lunches, prepare backpacks, drop them off at school at different times, then get myself ready, take the dog out, and leave for work,” Dr. Rhim said while describing a typical morning for her. She said that she feels like she can kind of breath once getting to work but then has to switch gears from mother to dentist, focusing on the intense challenges of the job. “You have to make you’re careful with each patient. You don’t want to work on the wrong tooth,” Dr. Rhim joked. As most working mothers do, Dr. Rhim does have a nanny to help her out. Her nanny is responsible for picking up the girls from school, feeding them dinner, and watching over them at home until Dr. Rhim arrives home from work. “I help the girls finish homework or whatever else, then I am usually scrambling to get them to bed by a decent hour,” Dr. Rhim said. “And then we start it all over again the next day,” she said with exhaustion in her voice. On days off, Dr. Rhim described her days as more relaxed but still fast-paced. Once she drops the girls off at school, she says her days seem to fly by. “I am constantly on the go,” Dr. Rhim added. While her girls are in school, she uses that time to grocery shop, do laundry, clean the house, etc. “I then pick up the girls from school and have to get them to their activities. Gymnastics, piano lessons, horse lessons, tennis. Squeezing in dinner between their activities, I don’t have time to cook every day, most of the time we have to be quick,” Dr. Rhim explained. Dr. Rhim grew up in a family of physicians and felt as if she was always geared towards the health field originally wanting to be a pediatrician as a girl. As a sophomore in college, she got a job as a dental assistant in Chinatown. “It opened up my eyes to dentistry at that time. I found it artistic. I was always interested in art as young girl,” Doctor Rhim said. When asked why she ended up choosing dentistry, Dr. Rhim referred back to the artistic aspect that she admired and concluded with, “I liked that it combined the health profession and helping people.” While Dr. Rhim has a great love for her profession and an even bigger love for her children, there is challenges that come about from handling the two of them together. “I feel bad for my younger daughter sometimes because she has classmates that their mothers don’t work. She wonders why I do but just doesn’t quite understand it yet. That’s why I work part-time. I want to be involved in extra-curricular and other things,” Dr. Rhim said. Watching her daughters grow up, time is already flying by for Dr. Rhim. “You want to be able to be there when they’re growing. It only happens once, and it goes fast,” Dr. Rhim said with love for her girls. Doctor Rr. is the definition of “Dr. Mom,” conquering the doctor and mother lifestyle, with immense dedication and passion for both her profession and daughters. Valley View Dental has three locations: Naperville, Romeoville, and Montgomery. With fifteen doctors in total, including Dr. Catherine Rhim, they are a full service dental practice. As a family dentist, they serve both children and adults. New patients are always welcome! Visit their website for their new patient special! www.vvdental.com. We put together a list of 25 Scenic Stops for you and yours to enjoy all summer long. We encourage you to try to visit as many as you can. Enjoy! #Summer2018 #25ScenicStops 1. LITTLE SABLE POINT LIGHTHOUSE Located at the Sand Dunes in Luddington, Michigan Just south of Ludington is a magical world of seventy foot sand dunes and evergreen forests. Here, burrowed amidst the Silver Lake State Park sand dunes, stands the spectacular Little Sable Point Lighthouse. Easily the busiest of these three lights, the 1874 tower stands alone at the base of Lake Michigan, over a hundred feet tall and still harboring its original 3rd order Fresnel lens. In 2010, thanks to a Federal Coastal Zone Management grant, the Pathways to Illumination project was completed. This well-paved pathway leads through what once was a steep dune that inhibited many visitors from making it to the light. Here you are welcome to climb the tower and take in the extraordinary views of forest and dunes that surrounds you. All towers may be climbed for the small price of $2 for children and $5 for adults. Educational tours are available by appointment, and are warmly received by staff and volunteers who love to share their Michigan maritime knowledge. SAVE THE DATE! Michigan Lighthouse Festival • August 25-27, 2017 www.visitlundington.com 2. CATARACT FALLS Located at Cataract State Park In Spencer, Indiana Known as some of the prettiest falls around, this is a scenic stop you’ll cherish for a lifetime. Don’t forget your camera! www.cataractfalls.com 3. FARM WINDMILLS Located Near Benton, Indiana Along I-65 Heading south on I-65 just outside of Lafayette, you can’t miss the tall, white windmills in the distance. There are many of them! For Illinois drivers on a road trip, they provide for unique country scenery. For others, though, the windmills mean a source of income and energy. Over a decade ago, this area was just another stretch of flat farmland used to grow corn and soybeans. But since 2008, boosted by federal and local tax incentives, wind turbines like these have become an increasingly prominent part of the northern Indiana landscape. Six wind farms were completed in Indiana in 2008 and 2009 alone and they something to see, indeed. www.benton county.in.gov/windfacts 4. GARDEN OF THE GODS Southern Illinois More than 320 million years ago, the wind and rain patiently started to chisel away at large deposits of sedimentary rock located in what is now, Shawnee National Forest. This garden of sandstone sculptures and vast untouched wilderness was fittingly named Garden of the Gods covering more than 3,300 acres of forest. With plenty of trails for backpacking and horseback riding, nature lovers love it here. The most popular trail is Observation Trail. It’s of average difficulty and is occasionally marked with educational signs outlining the history and geology of the region. Nice wooden decks for viewing the rock formations are present with magnificent bluffs which drop more than 100 feet down, but provide breathtaking views of the forests below and beyond.
