- EDUCATION NEWS | Glancer Magazine Expands Print + Digital Editorial Intern Team
INTRODUCING PENN STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT, KELSEY LENTZ OF GLEN ELLYN, OUR NEWEST SUMMER INTERN This week Glancer Magazine welcomes 2018 summer intern Kelsey Lentz to its Editorial Intern Team. Kelsey is an incoming junior at Penn State University and is majoring in digital and print journalism with a minor in digital media trends and analytics. After graduation, Kelsey hopes to pursue a career in the magazine industry that combines her passions for writing and digital storytelling. We met up with Kelsey earlier to learn more about her. “I love photography, reading, writing and I am a huge movie buff so in my free time you can almost always find me binge-watching Netflix. I am passionate about travelling and hope to one day travel the world as a travel writer. At Penn State I am a part of many clubs and organizations. I am a writer for Valley Magazine which is the only student produced magazine on campus and I am a member of ed2010, a magazine networking club,” Kelsey said. The Glen Ellyn resident has joined Glancer Magazine's editorial team for the summer and will be writing an arts and culture column that allows her to explore her passion for writing about entertainment, culture and lifestyle. "Our team is delighted to be working with Kelsey this summer and we are looking forward to her Arts & Culture column. Our readers will love learning all about the people, places and things that she plans to feature, delivering unique facts & tidbits about each. We love that she has such a passion for writing and digital publishing," said Lindy Kleivo, Publishing Director. Kelsey's column will appear in each issue of Glancer Magazine's DuPage County edition starting with the July 2018 issue. Subscribe today so you don't miss out on Kelsey's entertaining, diversely focused and unique feature column. Welcome to #TeamGlancer, Kelsey! - SITE SEEING BY BIKE | Riding Around DuPage County
ENJOY SOME BEAUTIFUL SITES WHILE BIKE RIDING IN DUPAGE DuPage County is home to one of the first successful rail-to-trail conversions in the United States - the Illinois Prairie Path. Spanning 52 miles of recreational trails, the Illinois Prairie Path and the Great Western Trail are considered the "spine" of the County's trail network. Both trails are surfaced with fine, crushed limestone, so for any scenic ride, try the DuPage Trails app or checkout the suggested rides at www.dupageco.org/EDP/Bikeways_and_Trails/41740/. Some highlight rides include up close wildlife viewing while riding the 8 miles at Springbrook Forest Preserve in Naperville which is one of three regionally significant grassland bird communities in the state and home to species like meadowlarks, dickcissels, grasshopper sparrows, woodcocks, and bobolinks as well as state-endangered northern harriers, short-eared owls, and Henslow's sparrows. Tandems, electric bikes, trailers and even Radio Flyer Wagons can be rented at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle to explore nine miles of paved roads that wind through the magnificent tree collection. Even better, no cars will be allowed on the East Side on select days and times from May through August. Two of DuPage County's forest preserves are connected via the Lake Regional Trail - Herrick Lake and Danada—nearly 6 miles long. Together, the preserves cover more than 1,600 acres of scenic terrain, including woodlands, prairie, and wetlands, as well as two large lakes, Rice Lake and Herrick Lake, where fishing is permitted. In addition to walking and biking, the trail is suitable for horseback riding and an equestrian center is available in Danada. Last but not least, the DuPage River Trail spans nearly 30 miles across DuPage and Will counties. Beginning in Warrenville and traveling south through Naperville, Bolingbrook, Plainfield, and Shorewood - along the way, there’s a trail spur with a decorative waterfall and a small rest area with river overview. -Kristen Kucharski #GlancerMagazine #HealthWellness #SportsRecreation #BikeRiding #June12018DuPage #DuPageCounty

- SITE SEEING BY BIKE | Riding Around Kane County
SO MANY SITES TO SEE....ENJOY YOUR COMMUNITY BY BIKE! Grab a bike and discover Kane County via their Bikeway System along the five major regional trails within Kane County: The Fox River Trail, The Great Western Trail, The Virgil Gilman Trail, the four spurs of The Illinois Prairie Path, and the developing Mid-County Trail. The handy bike map at www.kdot.countyofkane.org/Publications/2017_2018KaneandNorthernKendallCountyBikeMap.pdf will guide you across Kane County, through historic downtowns, along the scenic Fox River, by farmlands, prairies, and open space. Just off the trails, you can stop for shopping, restaurants, and activities such as hiking, camping, and fishing opportunities. The sprawling 6,800-acre Fermilab in Batavia campus, known as one of Kane County’s best places to walk, run or ride your bike, this year has opened parts of its campus that have been previously off limits to bikers and walkers. Several miles of trails travel through woodland, restored oak savanna and tallgrass prairie. These trails are excellent for viewing the Bison pasture, wildlife and wildflowers such as sedge wren, shooting star, meadow fritillary, Baltimore oriole and Jacob’s ladder. Near Sugar Grove, the Virgil L. Gilman Trail runs from quiet forest and prairie lands to bustling neighborhoods in just 11 miles, linking a woodsy community college campus with the eastern Chicago suburb of Montgomery. The rail-trail is built along the routes of two former railroads and follows along Blackberry Creek, crossing pedestrian bridges, and past Blackberry Farm. Continue to explore nature via Geneva Park District’s 69 miles of scenic trails which allow you to discover Peck Farm Park with stops at Hawks Hollow, the Butterfly House, Peck Family Historic House, Silo, and more. - SUMMER 2018 | Where to Go Boating
IT’S SUMMER SO IT’S BOATING SEASON! For those seeking a total boating adventure, did you know America's Great Loop, which is 1500 miles longer than the Nile River, can be accessed from Lake Michigan. This leg of your journey is 327 miles and extends from Chicago to Grafton, IL at the convergence of the Mississippi River. The most scenic route takes you from Lake Michigan, through the Chicago River Lock, and right through downtown Chicago down the Illinois River and onto the Mississippi. Along the 14 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline there are 10 harbors operated by the Chicago Park District from which boaters can choose to launch their boats. Each harbor has its own unique neighborhood feel and you can browse through each to determine what works best for your boating needs at www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/content/search?search_api_fulltext=Explore+the+Harbors. But if you prefer to stay closer to home, the closest public boat launch in the western suburbs is on the Fox River at Boy Scout Island in St. Charles. They recently installed a new concrete launch and are open Memorial Day through Labor Day with the purchase of a daily or season pass. You can also head just a little further southwest to beautiful Starved Rock Country and Heritage Harbor in Ottawa which offers a State-of-the-Art Marina on the Illinois Waterway and boasts and an 8-foot deep harbor and 140 boat slips. Travel further north to the Fox 14 Marina with locations in Fox River Grove and Algonquin, both located on the Fox River. Also up north in Delavan, WI is Lakelawn Resort Marina which offers a variety of boat, watersport rentals and tours. EXPLORE THE WATERS – ENJOY THE SUN! - DINING OUT IN KANE | Summer Dining Delights
DINING AROUND THE FOX WITH DAD – THERE'S MANY OPTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM KANE COUNTY – Its summertime and BBQs, patios and dads are at the center of June bringing us to find all the best sports bars and grills with outdoor seating that also boast a little action and fun. Global Brew Tap House in St. Charles offers a variety of special events and programs, from yearly beer festivals to monthly Beer School sessions, weekly Trivia Nights, and limited product releases, and you can always find plenty of seating to eat and play in the expansive outdoor beer garden. Board games and bags will keep you entertained at Penrose Brewing Company in Geneva. With a focus on Belgian inspired session ales, oak barrel-aging, fresh hop flavors and alternative fermentation, their beers are brewed with intention. Although they don’t serve food, you can bring your own or have it delivered; sometimes, they even have food trucks outside. If you are looking for live entertainment, the patio is the place to be at Crosstown Pub & Grill in Batavia. Best known for their famous wings and craft beers, this little niche will remind you of a neighborhood pub where you can catch a game, have some grub, and listen to some music. Every Friday, you can also listen to live music at Eddie Gaedel Pub & Grill in Elburn. Burgers, sandwiches, and Paninis are complimented with a wide variety of craft beers and IPA's, along with other specialty drinks. They also feature three big screen TV's and are sure to have your favorite game on. If you haven’t fulfilled your taste buds yet and are craving something unique, head to Hardware in North Aurora, a sustainable gastropub and brewery serving delicious food and over 400 whiskeys. They grow their own produce year-round in their greenhouse and have a goal to be self-sufficient for lettuce and herbs. They grow fruits and nuts in their own orchard and garden throughout their property; and their 1.5-acre hop farm provides one of the best ingredients for all of their beer. Outdoor dining, music, and games are where it’s at this June! - Kristen Kucharski #GlancerMagazine #DiningCabaret #KristenKucharski #June2018 #June12018Kane #KaneCounty
