  • MAJOR CONCERT NEWS | Cheap Trick to Headline Last Fling 2018

NAPERVILLE JAYCEES ANNOUNCE CHEAP TRICK AND LUCKY BOYS CONFUSION AT THE LAST FLING ON SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 2 Robin Zander (vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick Nielsen (lead guitar) and Tom Petersson (bass guitar) are part of the very fiber of American music, inspiring and delighting generations with their unique union of massive melodies and razorblade riffs, their own special brand of mischievous wit and maximum rock ‘n’ roll. Since the ‘70s, they’ve been blending elements of pop, punk and even metal in a way that is instantly catchy and recognizable. With timeless classics such as “I Want You to Want Me” and “Surrender,” CHEAP TRICK, now with drummer Daxx Nielsen, are a musical institution. The Rockford, IL band is as vital today as ever, having released three records in the last three years -- BANG ZOOM CRAZY...HELLO (2016), WE’RE ALL ALRIGHT (2017) and CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS (2017) –and toured relentlessly to packed audiences around the world. 2016 saw CHEAP TRICK's long-awaited induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The induction honored both the band and the pioneering sound that has earned them total record sales well in excess of 20 million featured appearances and more than 40 international Gold and Platinum certifications. 2017’s WE'RE ALL ALRIGHT! was yet another undisputed triumph for the band as the album's first single, "Long Time Coming," enjoyed an unprecedented run of 18 weeks at #1 on the Mediabase Classic Rock chart. Lucky Boys Confusion is celebrating the group’s twenty-year anniversary, and even they aren’t quite sure how they made it here. The Chicago-based group attained national (and soon after, global) attention with their 2001 major-label debut, Throwing the Game (Elektra Records), featuring the alternative-radiocharting “Fred Astaire.” The band toured relentlessly over the next decade, playing as many as 250 shows per year, and garnering a rabidly-loyal fan-base in-the-process. The new record, Stormchasers, is comprised of all new songs penned by the long-time songwriting team of Pandav and guitarist/multi instrumentalist Adam Krier, with production duties being manned by Grammy-nominated, Chicago-based producer Johnny K (Plain White T’s, 3 Doors Down). Stormchasers draws on the band’s long-history, with punk-tempo-ed bangers such as “It’s After Midnight” and the quasi-title-track “Stormchaser,” while showcasing their affinity for modern, radio-ready anthems on “Sun In My Eyes” and “Knives (Watch What You Say).” Cheap Trick will perform at 8:30 p.m. and Lucky Boys Confusion will perform at 7:00 p.m. on the Men in Black Pest Control Services Main Stage, located at the base of Rotary Hill near Naperville’s famed Riverwalk on Sunday September 2, 2018. One more opening act is expected to be added to the night very soon. Gates will open at 4:30pm. General Admission tickets will be $25 and PIT passes are $50. Additionally, $150 Carillon Experience tickets allow for a memorable experience to include a catered multi-course meal, complimentary beverages, snacks, access to front of stage during the performance and a potential Meet & Greet with the OPENING ACT performers (subject to availability). Tickets go on sale Friday July 13 at 10 a.m. at www.LastFling.org. More about OneRepublic Unabashed emotion and indelible melody have always propelled the music of OneRepublic. Their first album Dreaming Out Loud in 2007 included the Colorado Springs-bred band’s debut single “Apologize”—a Grammy Award-nominated, multi-platinum-selling track that long held the distinction of being the biggest radio airplay hit (only to be beat by another Tedder-penned song, “Bleeding Love” by Leona Lewis) in the history of Billboard’s Mainstream Top 40 chart. Their second album Waking Up in 2009 produced three brilliant singles: “All the Right Moves,” “Secrets” and “Good Life” (which reached #1 on Hot AC radio format, and led a longtime Disney campaign throughout 2012). Native followed in 2013 and featured the hits “If I Lose Myself,” “Love Runs Out,” “I Lived” and “Counting Stars.” With more than 10 million units of “Counting Stars” sold, the song’s video has racked up more than 2 billion hits on YouTube. After releasing Native, OneRepublic spent more than two years traveling the world in a series of sold-out tours, hitting 154 cities in 26 countries—true to their standing as a singularly global rock band. Lead singer/songwriter Ryan Tedder transformed that inspiration into new songwriting material and their fourth album, Oh My My, came to life in nearly 20 cities around the world. From track to track, OneRepublic parallel the extraordinary scope of the album’s creation by blending alt-rock, gospel, synth-pop, nu-disco and folk, with an abundance of sweeping, stadium-ready anthems featuring such flourishes as clap patterns recorded in Moscow’s Red Square, the percussive footwork of flamenco dancers in Madrid, and the bells of Big Ben in London. Oh My My also boasts a dazzling lineup of guest artists, including Peter Gabriel, Santigold, French electronic duo Cassius, and Romy Madley Croft of The xx. OneRepublic, featuring Ryan Tedder, bassist Brent Kutzle, guitarists Zach Filkins and Drew Brown, and drummer Eddie Fisher, wrapped 2017 supporting U2 across multiple dates of The Joshua Tree Tour, headlining The Honda Civic Tour, selling out a run in Asia and releasing several more songs, including the T-Bone Burnett collaboration “Truth to Power,” featured in the Al Gore film An Inconvenient Sequel. Currently the band is back in Asia visiting India, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and China before its summer U.S. dates including RiverEdge Park. For more, visit OneRepublic.com. • COVER STORY, DUPAGE | Body Beautiful Suburbanites

THREE LOCAL WOMEN WHO FEEL HEALTHY & BEAUTIFUL INSIDE-OUT Our bodies come in all different shapes and sizes, but the one thing all bodies have in common is the ability to make us feel great or awful depending on how they are treated and how well they are functioning. We caught up with a few of our West Suburban readers who shared the various regimens they use to help them feel healthy and subsequently, look good as well. Each story will inspire you. Barb Marquardt of Winfield Pictured Center Barb Marquardt has led an active lifestyle and worked out for most of her adult life and has been a member at different gyms along the way. She never joined a gym with the intention to lose weight. She would work out on her own and liked the way she felt afterwards both physically and mentally. Interestingly, she never saw a significant change in her body composition. At her husband’s urging, she begrudgingly joined his gym, H4 Training in Winfield. “I expected that it would be similar to my experiences at other gyms,” says Barb. “I was completely wrong.” She explains that H4 is the “whole package” when it comes to training and encouraging a healthy lifestyle. She participates in their group training classes at least twice a week, which is essentially personal training but in a group setting. The trainers also educate and provide information on nutrition and other aspects that are important to overall health. “After about six months, I began to see that I was becoming physically stronger and looked more muscular,” says Barb. “Talk about motivation to continue!” Barb insists that there is just so much more to the puzzle of keeping your body looking and feeling great. “Drink tons of water! The more you drink it, the more you will crave it. I try and drink at least 64 oz a day,” advises Barb. “Also, consistently get 7-8 hours of good sleep. Everything seems better after a good night’s rest.” –MK Lisa Kahn of Naperville Pictured Left Two years ago, Lisa Kahn’s health regime seemed like it was on the super healthy list. She was vegan-juicing daily and eating a wealth of raw foods, but suddenly her body crashed. She had no energy, lost fifteen pounds, could hardly walk and couldn’t keep food down. After many trial and error doctors and a lot of suffering, Dr. Sexton from Naperville Integrated Wellness introduced her to functional medicine. Functional medicine is a form of alternative medicine that focuses on restoring proper body and organ function and addresses the root cause instead of just symptoms. “My daily health plan had to change drastically,” says Lisa. “I eat local, organic, GMO free foods and use environmentally friendly products which I apply, inhale and clean with daily.” Lisa practices yoga several times a week and intersperses full body workouts and strength training which add to her fitness regime. Yoga keeps her stress levels to a minimum and helps keep her body looking good and functioning at top levels. She, and fellow yogis share garden plots to ensure they reap organic produce for maximum health benefits. Lisa’s passion for health and wellness led her to embrace being a Young Living Independent Distributor where she can share her love of essential oils and allows her to make her own environmentally friendly cleaning and body care products using a wide variety of Young Living’s chemical free essential oils. Lisa explains, “You are what you put into and on your body and who you choose to surround yourself with – keep it all non-toxic!”–MK Pam Ebeling of Lisle Pictured Right Pam Ebeling likes to start her day with what she calls her “miracle morning”, a little time for herself. She drinks her tea or coffee, reads her devotional and some personal development and then works out, usually from the comfort of her own home. By fueling both her mind and body, she feels like she is in the best shape of her life. However, it wasn’t always this way. A couple of years ago, Pam was searching for something. She just didn’t know what. “I was killing myself spending hours in the gym and was looking for a community to belong to,” she says. One day, an old friend approached her and introduced her to Beachbody, telling her she could work out 30 minutes a day from home and follow their nutrition plan and get awesome results. Pam decided to take the leap, and she has never looked back. She sticks to the 80/20 rule of eating: 80% eating lean, clean and green, and the other 20% is meant to enjoy life’s little moments, like pizza, ice cream and wine. Having the healthy balance, she doesn’t feel deprived and stays on track. “As a Beachbody Coach, I work with other busy ladies, like myself, to help them get started on their fitness journey,” explains Pam. “I talk with them about their goals, and we find a program and nutrition plan that best supports them.” Being able to help others become happy and healthy is just another component that helps Pam continue to feel the best about herself. –MK #GlancerMagazine #CoverStory #MindyKyle #July2018DuPage #DuPageCounty #HealthWellness #StyleBeauty #LocalWomentoKnow #LocalWomen #TrendingNow

  • COVER STORY, KANE COUNTY | Body Beautiful Suburbanites

THREE LOCAL WOMEN WHO FEEL HEALTHY & BEAUTIFUL INSIDE-OUT Our bodies come in all different shapes and sizes, but the one thing all bodies have in common is the ability to make us feel great or awful depending on how they are treated and how well they are functioning. We caught up with a few of our West Suburban readers who shared the various regimens they use to help them feel healthy and subsequently, look good as well. Each story will inspire you. Mary Boros of Geneva Pictured Center Running has always been Mary Boros’s passion since high school. Now, five children later (ages ranging from 5-17), she finds it harder, but even more necessary to take an hour or two out of her day to focus on her training and keeping healthy and fit. She continues to complete about six half-marathons and one or two full marathons a year. Last year, Mary was diagnosed with a bladder disease called IC (interstitial cystitis) and had to stop running and exercising completely for twelve weeks. “After I completed treatment, I was in horrible shape,” she explains. “I decided to do something completely different and joined H4 Training in Geneva. The various muscle building exercises completely changed my life. My muscles are toned, I feel great, and I have been able to cut two minutes off my mile pace.” Mary’s health issues pushed her to find something that would strengthen her entire body. She feels the knowledgeable trainers at H4 were able to help her overcome the health and fitness obstacles she was faced with. She is back to running, but she makes sure to still include the H4 training three times a week. While traveling for business two or three days a week, Mary brings her training on the road with her and continues the exercises she has learned from H4. It has also been important to eat healthier focusing on protein and carbs and eliminating processed foods and sugar. “However, I still enjoy a glass of wine or two,” exclaims Mary. –MK Val Farkas of Geneva Pictured Left In her twenties, Val Farkas decided to ditch her unhealthy eating habits, do a 180 and entered the competitive bodybuilding arena for a few years. This decision ended up launching her into a permanent lifestyle of keeping her body in shape. She worked out everywhere from garage gyms to big name fitness centers, getting involved in spin classes, weightlifting, boot camps, long distance biking and running. “I found I was overdoing most of my workouts using heavy weights and continually strained my muscles, which would set me back from my goals,” states Val. Three years ago, a friend introduced Val to Pure Barre in Geneva. “I chuckled at the size of the weights and the teeny tiny movements people around me were doing,” says Val, “but I barely made it through the class and was so sore because I didn’t get the concept.” Val vowed to go as often as possible. Now, 750 plus classes later and just turned 57 in June, she claims she is in the best shape physically and mentally that she’s ever been. She works out as soon as she rolls out of bed at 5:40am and has even recruited her daughter, Alex (26) to join her in the mornings. She truly appreciates the staff at Pure Barre and all her fellow barre-barians for their support. Along with eating as healthy as possible and drinking lots of water, Val believes finding a type of exercise that you actually like and keeps you active, is the key to keeping your body in its best shape. –MK Jessica Kellerman of St. Charles Pictured Center Plagued with rheumatoid arthritis since her early twenties, Jessica Kellerman was not ready to live the rest of her life on prescription medication to ease her pain and discomfort. “I was scared,” says Jessica. “If I felt this bad so young, what were my 40’s, 50’s and beyond going to be like?” She decided to be accountable for her own health and started researching natural options to bring down the inflammation. Then she stumbled upon cryotherapy and found it to be extremely effective with no side-effects. Cryotherapy is the process of standing in a chamber where the temperature reaches approximately -250 degrees for 2-3 minutes. Jessica insists it is more tolerable than you think. “Besides lowering my inflammation,” says Jessica, “there are so many other benefits that help my body feel and look great. It burns 600-800 calories a treatment, and I sleep better, have more energy and have smoother skin.” She explains, though, you can’t just go once, you need to be consistent. She visits French Med Spa and Cryotherapie in St. Charles at least three times a week and loves the atmosphere there. She explains that many people come in for the therapy that are not suffering an illness but would like all the benefits that help them look better and feel better. Besides cryotherapy, Jessica has made other lifestyle changes such as drinking a lot of water, eating a lot of plants, and exercising regularly. “I don’t have to take prescription drugs,” says Jessica, “and I am nearly symptom free.” –MK #GlancerMagazine #CoverStory #MindyKyle #HealthWellness #StyleBeauty #LocalWomentoKnow #LocalWomen #July2018Kane #KaneCounty #TrendingNow

  • THE WEIGHT GAME | Kane Area Residents Share their Weight Loss Stories

GENEVA RESIDENTS, DOUG O'NEIL AND CHERYL AND GEORGE CURRY SHARE THEIR WEIGHT LOSS SUCCESS STORIES Injuries and medical issues forced Doug (37),and Cheryl (49), and George (51) to take a serious look at their health. Like many families, Cheryl and George were busy with daily demands of life and neglected their well-being. Blood sugar, sleep apnea, joint pain and arthritis became common terms in their house. Doug worked as an auto mechanic but had a back injury at 19 which forced surgery at 21. He switched careers, only to sprain his ankle, leading him back to the auto industry and yet another back surgery. All three knew they needed a change. “At 178 lbs. my wife encouraged me to try Hot Yoga. It completely changed my life,” Doug shares. “I left the labor industry and became a yoga instructor at Bent Dog Yoga in St. Charles. The longer I was in the yoga world, the more I lived the lifestyle.” After 10 years of practice and a better overall diet, Doug now weighs 153 lbs. and has no back pain, no ankle pain, more energy and feels great! Doug hasn’t touched fast food or soda in over 7 years and has eliminated almost all packaged foods. His favorite snacks are raw walnuts, pecans, almonds, cashews, Thai food, and really good salads. Cheryl and George learned it’s not just about the stomach, but also about the mind as they took their journey through gastric bypass surgery at Northwestern Medicine Metabolic Health and Surgical Weight Loss Center at Delnor Hospital in Geneva. Like Doug, they learned a whole new lifestyle which included heading to the Delnor Fitness Center 4-5 days a week. “We knew that the weight loss alone would not lead us to health; we learned how to maximize our time at the gym so as not to get bored with a routine and to challenge and push ourselves,” Cheryl says. “It was rewarding seeing our bodies transform and our energy levels skyrocket.” They lost a combined 236 lbs. and each lost 12 pant sizes over a year’s time. Cheryl is no longer pre-diabetic, nor has sleep apnea; neither has joint pain, and their blood pressure has returned to normal. They love snacking on homemade guacamole with baked plantain chips and low fat yogurt. Although it is very true that only you can decide to get started on the journey to better health, all three agree that having family or friends to hold you accountable is key to the success. –Kristen Kucharski #GlancerMagazine #HealthWellness #TheWeightGame #KaneCounty #Geneva #July2018Kane

  • THE WEIGHT GAME | DuPage Residents Share their Weight Loss Stories

3 WEST SUBURBAN RESIDENTS SHARE Meet Salima Ali of Naperville, Steve Greanias of Glen Ellyn and Stephen Ryan of Romeoville Whether you’re single like Salima Ali, married like Stephen Ryan, or married with kids like Steve Greanias, wanting to feel good and comfortable in their clothes was the key ingredient to their weight loss journeys. Each had tried it on their own – Salima worked out for almost 6 months from June 2017 to November 2017 and only lost 6 pounds in 6 months. Graenias’s main focus at the gym was to do something – anything - and get into the steam room and sauna as quickly as possible. Stephen owned a stationary bike but used it infrequently. All wanted a healthier lifestyle. “Someone from Jamat Khana (place of worship) gave a reference to Jazba Fitness in Naperville. I visited the place on November 21, 2017, talked with my trainer, Shehzad Merchant, and told him, I will start after Thanksgiving weekend,” Salima says. “I started working out on November 28, 2017 weighing 167 pounds and here I am today on June 3, 2018, weighing 132 pounds feeling awesome and enjoying life and can taste everything out there without any guilt.” Salima did not give up any food. In fact, she still eats rice, pasta, paratha (butter bread), fries, etc. She just had to learn how and when to eat the foods she liked, so that it worked for her body rather than against it, and her trainer continues to adjust her workouts to keep her body from getting used to one form of exercise. Graenias also tries to eat healthy during the week, staying away from sugar as the number one goal; but, on weekends he definitely lets loose with the food and drinks, but has learned from his workout crew at Orange Theory Fitness in Glen Ellyn (OTF GE), “it’s one of the things I burn for"! Graenias became addicted to OTF after the first few classes. He started to see positive results after just a couple of weeks. In January of 2016, he weighed 236 lbs. and was wearing size 36 jeans. Over the past two years since starting at OTF GE, he is down to 192 lbs., 15% body fat, and size 32 jeans; and like Salima’s workouts, Graenias enjoys the diversity of the different types of classes OTF offers and the way they mix up the workouts. Stephen also knew he needed variety to keep interested. What began at 315 pounds with high blood pressure and edema on a stationary bike in his living room turned into workouts with Jeff Maynard of Jeff Maynard Fitness at MPG Fitness in Plainfield, and De Wayne Roberts at Lifetime Fitness in Romeoville. They coached him to shedding 120 lbs., regulating his blood pressure, and competing in men’s bodybuilding contests. Stephen now does shows all around the country and Midwest. The division he is in is called Men's Physique, and a goal he has set forth for himself and is focused on, is attaining his IFBB pro card. Instagram posts of meals, progress, and photos help hold Stephen accountable and the amazing results have been his ultimate reward for motivation! “The promise that I made to myself to change lead me to giving up alcohol, eliminating fast food, joining a gym, doing meal preparation, and food journaling,” he says. “I downloaded a free app called My Fitness Pal. If there’s one piece of advice I would give to anyone looking to lose weight it’s that you must keep track of the foods you eat.” Although it is very true that only you can decide to get started on the journey to better health, all agree that having a trainer, a group of workout buddies, or food diary to hold you accountable, is key to the success. –Kristen Kucharski #GlancerMagazine #HealthWellness #TheWeightGame #GlenEllyn #Naperville #DuPageCounty #July2018DuPage

ILLINOIS This beauty queen was raised in small towns of Indiana, growing up with cows and horses, riding dirt bikes and quads; she was shy and introverted, so mom and grandma thought pageants would help her debut. “I really enjoyed getting dressed up and putting on make-up; and regardless of whether I won or lost, we always went out for ice cream afterwards,” Nicole says. “It wasn’t until high school that I recognized the real growth and opportunity that pageants afforded.” As Mrs. Illinois-America, Nicole does official appearances such as parades, fundraisers, charity events, singing the national anthem, ribbon cutting ceremonies, radio or TV shows, and more! She believes the best part of holding any title is the amplification of one’s voice and impact. Being Mrs. Illinois-America affords Nicole opportunities to help advocate important issues to a vast diverse crowd. Or course, as a Mrs. Pageant, you have to be married to compete, so each title holder has different personal responsibilities to work around as well. “Since I have two young children (Carter, age 2.5 and Cooper, age 1), it is more difficult for me to travel long distances or stay overnight for events, so I try and go to events that are local, family friendly, and/or only require a few hours of time so I can go while I have a babysitter,” she shares. “Social media also plays a large role in staying connected to supporters and prospective contestants, so my online presence is pretty constant.” Nicole is focusing on bettering her community. She lives in Mill Creek of Geneva and feels the values are the same as her small town growing up. She and her husband Grant are members of Chapelstreet Church and volunteer in the worship band. They meet bi-weekly with other couples to do a Bible study and have discussions to better their marriages. Nicole was also a table leader for the “Moms Together” discussion program for moms with young children. Other involvements include advocating for “Victoria’s Voice” – The Victoria Siegel Foundation (www.victoriasiegelfoundation.org) which takes “aim at reducing drug experimentation, addiction, and overdose death” which hits very close to home for Nicole as she lost her brother-in-law to a heroin overdose. She also writes a blog for www.modelmomsclub.com and has a YouTube channel which shares beauty tips. www.youtube.com/modelmomsclub. Nicole will be competing in the national Mrs. America Pageant in August so stay tuned to see where this Geneva Mom goes next! www.mrsillinoisamerica.com/About_Us.html –Kristen Kucharski #GlancerMagazine #Lifestyle #LocalWomentoKnow #LocalWomen #KaneCoounty #KristenKucharski #SoCelebrity #WestSuburbanVIP #July2018Kane #July2018DuPage

  • COMMUNITY | Open-Air Market Fun

FEATURING THE WHEATON FRENCH MARKET With summer in full swing and the temperature getting increasingly warmer, there is no better way to take advantage of the season in Dupage County then shopping at some of the many outdoors markets. The Wheaton French Market is a particularly good way to spend a Saturday morning especially during the summer when produce is fresh and the weather is ideal. The open-air market, located in downtown Wheaton just south of the tracks at Main and Liberty, is one of the most popular and longest running market of its kind organized by Bensoudin USA Inc. It brings the Parisian culture of a public mixed market right here to the county while highlighting the best of the Midwest—local farmers, artisans, businesses and craftsmen. You can walk the Wheaton streets and enjoy everything from fresh produce and fruit to locally sourced honey or jam. You can also add unique jewelry pieces to your wardrobe or purchase hand crafted soap among other authentic items. Vendors like The Cheese People, Twisted Olive, Pet Chef, Garlic Underground and many more, occupy the streets every Saturday from 8am-2pm. Even in the pouring rain, the vendors set up their shops and fill them with the fruits of their labor as customers still eagerly flock to the market. In fact, it is on the crummiest of days that the strongest sense of community can be observed at the Wheaton French Market. Vendors pack their shops tightly together and set up tarps to combat rain as they idly chat with each other and the community members who come out to support their local artisans and small businesses. Jane Hurst, owner of Jane’s Herbs, has been selling her organic herbs, spices and hemp oils for 12 years at the Wheaton French Market. Hurst says she most enjoys being in the outdoors and also loves all the people. “I think [the market] is very important for the community too as it offers a versatility in fresh organic fruits and vegetables and it allows vendors an opportunity to sell their labors,” Hurst says. As a licensed master herbalist and professor at a local herbal college, Hurst gets to have her students participate as well which she says is always a good thing to see. Many college students in the area who are studying fields such as sustainability, business, or agriculture participate in the weekly market, expanding its role of providing a pleasurable experience for community members by also serving as a learning experience for participating students. This summer, take the Saturday to embrace the French culture and interact with the community. You can make a whole day out of this opportunity by biking to the market along the Illinois Prairie Path or use the fresh food to spice up your diet and try cooking new things in the kitchen. Enjoy!
