  • COMMUNITY | Outdoor Music Venue to Love

LAKESIDE SUMMER SERIES AT MCANINCH ARTS CENTER The best part about summer is enjoying the perks of outdoor entertainment. Thankfully, the McAninch Arts Center has got you covered this season with their 5th annual Lakeside Summer Series at Lakeside Pavilion. The beautiful grounds of the MAC have a quaint grassy area, perfect for enjoying live music and movies, along with a gorgeous view of the lake. The venue is located on the College of Dupage campus and from July 12-August 10, you can enjoy free family-friendly movies as well as free concert and jazz series. Bring your lawn chairs and an appetite as vendors from all over Dupage County sell delicious food for you to snack on while you’re lounging out or you can bring your own picnic style food. Weber’s Grill, Marché in Glen Ellyn, Heavenly Hot Dogs, Nothing Bundt Cakes and many more vendors set up shop on the lawn to provide you with all your culinary needs, making for the ideal summer evening. Thursday’s at 8pm you can catch movies such as “Willie Wonka & the Chocolate Factory” or “The Lion King” and see the WDCB Jazz Series at 7:30pm which features musicians and performers like the Joe Lewis Walker Band, Frank Russell & the Chicago Power All-Star Band and the Chicago Jazz Orchestra. Friday night festivities include the Pop Music Series with performances from the internationally acclaimed Beatles tribute band, American English, “Unraveling the Wilburys”, and the New Philharmonic. The most anticipated shows for this summer are Broadway alumni Craig Meyer and Donnie Kehr’s ode to two iconic musicians in “Piano Men: A Tribute to Elton John and Billy Joel” and Rick Michel’s homage to Frank Sinatra in “My Sinatra” which concludes the summer series on August 10th. The series will also showcase some of the talent at COD with its roster of finalists and winners from the college’s Apollo Live! Student Talent Competition who will perform during the Friday evening concerts. “Goldie’s Next Big Adventure,” a production by the COD College Theater, will be presented on July 14th and 15th at 5pm. Glen Ellyn native Cindy Glavin goes to Lakeside Pavilion a couple times each summer with her family and says they enjoy being outside and listening to good music. “I like that I don’t have to travel far for a very enjoyable evening with friends or family,” Glavin says. “We are thrilled that the college invites the community to share in the great outdoor space […] given the winters we have in Chicago it is always nice to spend an evening outdoors.” If you are looking for an experience like Ravinia Pavilion but closer to home and at a better price, than Lakeside Pavilion is a great alternative. “A first-class music venue in your own backyard,” says Glen Ellyn resident, Lori Krebsbach. All of these summer festivities presume next summer as well with the addition of some new acts, movies, vendors and performances. Come out to Lakeside Pavilion every summer to experience the series or checkout the MAC throughout the year for more arts and entertainment. • PEDIS-n-PASSPORTS | Mother-Daughter Milwaukee Weekend

MOTHER-DAUGHTER MILWAUKEE WEEKEND 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8…Schlemiel! Schlimazel! Hasenpfeffer Incorporated! (Millennials, ask your parents.) I showed Brooke an episode of Laverne and Shirley before we headed out on our mother-daughter Milwaukee weekend. And yes, I made her reenact the opening right out on the street in public. Considering I was taking her to a Miranda Sings concert, it was more than a fair exchange. Milwaukee is such an easy weekend getaway from our Chicago suburb of Naperville…just under a two hour drive. We hit no traffic and the weather was beautiful, sunny and dry for a mid-March weekend. If you visit Milwaukee, I can’t imagine you’d want to stay anywhere other than The Pfister Hotel. It’s rich in history, luxury and art. Built in 1893, The Pfister holds the largest hotel collection of Victorian Art in the world. No wonder it is known as “The Jewel of Milwaukee”. The top floor pool with the panoramic view wasn’t lacking either. Knowing basically nothing about Milwaukee, we were excited to explore the city. Here’s what we learned just by chatting with locals and asking lots of questions: Milwaukee is a German settlement and the influential Captain Fredrick Pabst’s name is everywhere. He was a German-American brewer who purchased the Pabst Theatre in 1890. Milwaukee is divided by the Milwaukee River. The east sits along the Milwaukee Bay which spills into Lake Michigan. The buildings here are full of character. City Hall could probably be mistaken for Big Ben and the Federal Building looks like a European castle. The west side of Milwaukee seems more suburban and is home to Marquette University–now on Brooke’s college radar. Along the lake is the Museum of Art. Its structure resembles a ship or perhaps a whale. Either way, it’s a work of art in itself! Although we were surprised not to find any breweries, there’s definitely not a lack of churches in Milwaukee. There almost seems to be a church on every block and the architecture of each one is magnificent. Again the feeling of European teleportation was strong. To sum up, Milwaukee is perfect for a last minute girl’s getaway, an architectural dream, easy and fun to walk around, rich in history with loads of shopping and dining choices. • DR. MOM | Meet Dr. Kelly Smith

INTRODUCING WEST SUBURBAN DR. MOM– Dr. Kelly Smith Leaving the house at 6pm, arriving back at 8am and caring for a husband and five children can be a struggle, but Dr. Kelly Smith works hard to balance the many aspects of life as a physician and mother. Dr. Smith has one child of her own– a 4 month old– as well as 4 stepchildren ages 9-16. With a typical work day being from 7pm to 7am working in Rush Copley’s emergency room, life can be very exhausting at times. When asking Dr. Smith how she makes it all work she replied, “I have a sitter one day a week and my husband is home on the weekends, so I can sleep,” she said. Even on her days off, Dr. Smith still has a full schedule of everyday duties as a mother and wife. “I’m kept busy with my infant, then preparing dinner for my stepchildren on Tuesday and Thursdays,” she spoke about her schedule on her days off. Dr. Smith shared that she always tries to have a home cooked meal prepared for the kids whenever she is home, representing her love for her children and their healthy lifestyle. During Dr. Smith’s college years, her hopes of being a physician came about. “I loved the idea that my knowledge can improve someone’s life,” Dr. Smith shared her passion for her job. “Being a physician allows me to use my skills to solve incredibly complex and fascinating disease processes,” she explained. On top of Dr. Smith’s countless dreams for her future, her main goal is to raise a happy, healthy, kind and smart daughter. Regarding her daughter’s future, she explained “I would support my child becoming a doctor if it was a passion of hers.” Dr. Smith continued her statement with her thoughts about the changed world of medicine today. “Unfortunately, medicine isn’t as pure as it used to be,” explaining with a tone of disappointment. To Dr. Smith she sees medicine as being tainted by insurance companies, the huge risk of litigation, an insane number of administrators and bureaucrats, and high drug costs. However, these changing factors to the world of medicine do not change Dr. Smith’s dedication or passion for her occupation. She simply cannot foreshadow how the medical field may evolve when her daughter has grown, but Dr. Smith will support her daughter and stepchildren no matter the path they choose in life. • GLEN ELLYN MOMS VILLAGE | Getting Organized at Home

TAKING BACK YOUR SPACE WITH THESE 5 STEPS With a house full of kids, pets, and very little time, keeping the house orderly is like shoveling during a heavy snowstorm. The endless papers, the many shoes, the nomadic toys can quickly add up and the task of organizing seems impossible. With these strategies and tips from Laurie Palau of ‘This Organized Life’ podcast and author of Hot Mess: A Practical Guide to Getting Organized, she can help you find your space again! Her philosophy begins with the root of your clutter. Once you identify where your clutter is coming from you can begin to work on strategies to eliminate it and get organized. You don’t have to throw everything away but learning how to get rid of items you don’t need and removing excess clutter from your house is the main goal. Define your clutter. Is it physical, emotional, or calendar clutter? Physical clutter is basically STUFF. Emotional clutter is something that you can’t get rid of because it makes you feel guilty or you feel fearful that you might need it again or worry about the “what if”. Calendar clutter is being over scheduled or having poor time management skills which leaves you with saying “there just aren’t enough hours in the day! Talking through this and breaking free from your clutter gives you permission to let go. Ask yourself the 5 W’s. Seriously think about why you are holding onto items. If you don’t have a good answer for these then it’s time to let it go! And don’t let the “what if” stand in your way. • Who gave it to me? • What purpose is it serving? • When was the last time I used or wore it? • Why am I keeping it? Schedule it. If you feel there is never a good time to get organized, identify your peak times of productivity. Perhaps a free morning when the kids go back to school, or make it a family project. Make piles. Start with a small area and sort items into piles. Keep, Donate, Recycle, Relocate. Label everything. Whatever area you are organizing create zones and keep similar items together. Layout items so that the most used ones have prime real estate. Label, label! This makes it easy for family members to put things back! • TUB VS. SHOWER | Designer Tips to Help In Your Planning

BODY CLEANSING– TUB VS. SHOWER It’s not a philosophical question. Rather, it may be a question of space or of cost. Or it might just be personal preference that dictates the choice of tub or shower. Common wisdom for decades has been that a tub-shower combination was the best way to satisfy everyone. Now that many homes have more than one bathroom, the prevailing answer is that, to maintain resale value, a home with at least one tub is best or one tub on each floor in larger homes; There is no reason, however, to have a tub or a tub/shower combo in every bathroom if you prefer using a shower. Large Showers– Busy lifestyles tend to encourage quick showers rather than relaxing soaks, and if that’s the norm for your household, it can make sense to have the convenience of a separate shower, perhaps with a built-in bench, rather than a tub only or even a tub-shower combination. Showers can be designed to fit any space and lifestyle. If you like to relax and enjoy the peace and privacy of a longer more soothing shower experience the sky is the limit today. You can incorporate sound, steam, music, phone answering, tv, seating, chromatherapy and just about anything else. Digital controls that are programmable to set the temperature, music, and type of water flow can even be controlled by smart phones. Modern curb-free or low curb showers are also more convenient for older persons and those with vision and mobility issues or those who have difficulty bending or use a walker or a wheel chair. If the shower space is large enough, the shower can be built without a door and still control the water spray. It is relatively easy to design a spacious shower with a non-slip floor surface to replace an existing tub. If that seems like an overly large shower, many bath designers choose to add a row of open shelves, a narrow supply closet or a slim cabinet at one end. The addition of a frameless glass panel and door can visually expand a small bathroom and eliminate the need for a shower curtain. Tub Only– Soaking tubs are all the rage in trendy bathrooms today — with higher than normal side walls, they are sometimes viewed as luxury items, but they can also be practical in homes with children because they tend to reduce splashing and can be large enough to seem like small swimming pools — encouraging young children to enjoy bath time. One of the common reasons to have a tub in a family bathroom is for its convenience as a baby bath since most younger children don’t enjoy showers. Separate Shower and Tub– If your bathroom is large enough, you might want to add a separate shower rather than replace an existing tub. Again, depending on the configuration and the existing plumbing, it might be an easy task to reroute water lines and tie in to an existing drain, or it might involve chipping into a slab or breaking through a floor. In most cases, though, it does not constitute an impossible dream!
