The western suburbs of Chicago are teeming with famous hauntings and spooky histories. Perhaps it is one of your favorite restaurants or museums or a street in your neighborhood. Be prepared for shivers up your spine as we explore these haunted hot spots where the supernatural may reside. Do you believe? You decide. In our fourth week we explore…. THE ROUNDHOUSE IN AURORA In 1856, the Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad began constructing a limestone railroad roundhouse in Aurora right next to the tracks at North Broadway and Spring Street. When completed, forty service bays to help maintain and manufacture the trains were built in a ring. In the center was a large rotating circular platform to help turn the engines around since they could not, at the time, move in reverse. This heavy machinery and dangerous steel work was opportune for grisly accidents and fatalities. With the invention of the automobile and the airplane, the railroad industry eventually slowed down, and the roundhouse finally closed in 1974. For twenty years, the massive roundhouse lay abandoned and falling apart; however, there were many tales of the sounds of hammers and phantom trains coming from the ruins. Curious trespassers swore of hearing footsteps, voices and frequently spotted dark entities lurking or walking through doors. In 1994, former Chicago Bear Hall of Famer Walter Payton and his business partners purchased the roundhouse building and property and renovated it as Walter Payton’s Roundhouse. The complex included a restaurant, brewery, sports bar, comedy club, Walter Payton museum and several banquet and conference rooms. The hallway outside the Stout and Lager conference room has the reputation of being the most haunted part of the building, as people have seen shadowy figures, felt cold spots and heard voices. Now the employees say there’s one more spirit that roams their halls – Walter Payton – and he likes to spend most of his time in the Legends Museum. CHARLES, ILLINOIS When St. Charles’ Arcada Theatre was built in 1926, they had grand plans for the entertainment venue when they installed 1,009 seats in a town of roughly only 5,000 people. Upon their grand opening, their dreams came true as patrons came in large numbers from the city and surrounding towns to see silent movies and vaudeville acts. Many legendary stars have graced their stage, including Judy Garland, Liberace and the Von Trapp Family Singers. Today, the Arcada Theatre is still one of the Midwest’s top live music venues attracting some of the world’s most notable performers. The theatre basement carries even more history where a network of tunnels and rooms may give credence to the rumors they were originally used as part of the Underground Railroad assisting to transport slaves to Canada. Years later, they were said to have been used as a brothel and by bootleggers to transfer alcohol discreetly and also believed to be one of Al Capone’s favorite hideaways. Rooms with multiple locks circulated stories of Capone secretly keeping bodies within their walls. This colorful history and the whisper of a woman who once hung herself from the theatre balcony could possibly be behind the footsteps, banging and disembodied voices heard by employees and patrons when no one else was around. The stage floodlights have been known to turn on by themselves, and human figures have been seen then suddenly disappear. So, if you find yourself enjoying a show at the Arcada, best check out who is sitting next to you. THE GREAT NAPERVILLE TRAIN WRECK OF 1946: THE DEAD WERE LAID OUT ON 4TH AVENUE NAPERVILLE–On April 25, 1946, a Northern Pacific train, the Advance Flyer, was heading west from Chicago to Omaha, Nebraska filled with passengers. As they sped down the track, a brakeman noticed an object fly out from underneath one of the cars. To investigate and check for damage, the train stopped at the next station – Loomis Street in Naperville. On the same track, also traveling west and three minutes behind the Advance Flyer , was the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy train, the Exposition Flyer bound for San Francisco. There were blinking red lights warning the engineer of a stopped train ahead, but he did not see them. The Exposition Flyer rammed into the back of the Advance Flyer at a speed of 85 miles per hour. The diesel engine tore through the last car, slicing it through the middle and smashed the next car with such force, it was crushed and catapulted at an angle up in the air. Forty-seven people died in the accident, most so badly mangled, it was difficult to identify the bodies of the victims. Some never were. The dead were laid out in long rows on the lawns of the homes along Fourth Avenue, stretching almost a full block from Loomis Street to the station. These violent deaths are thought to be the cause of many peculiar reports on the blocks around the station, including voices calling for help, the feel of an invisible hand touching you, knocking on the doors of the nearby homes and even apparitions walking the streets and disappearing. The Great Naperville Train Wreck of 1946 still ranks as one of the worst train disasters in US history. THE HAUNTED LOCALE: PART 1 : COUNTRY HOUSE ALL FALL FUN ALL ARTS + ENTERTAINMENT

Be prepared for shivers up your spine as we explore these haunted hot spots where the supernatural may reside. Do you believe? You decide. First up this week…. THE COUNTRY HOUSE IN CLARENDON HILLS – ONE OF ILLINOIS' MOST HAUNTED PLACES CLARENDON HILLS–The Country House is a quaint neighborhood restaurant and bar that is famous for their half-pound burgers. Almost as famous is their resident ghost. Having been visited over the years by ghost hunters and psychics, the tavern is reportedly one of Illinois most haunted places. In 1974, the restaurant was renovated, and that is when strange and unexplainable things began to happen: dishes levitating and crashing in the kitchen, the jukebox turning on by itself in the middle of the night, shutters opening and closing on their own, the sound of a crying baby, pounding on the walls and footsteps upstairs when no one else is there. Mediums and psychics who have visited claim to feel the presence of a young woman looking for something she had lost. She is described as a blonde in her late twenties who died in the late fifties of abdominal injuries. A previous owner tells the story from that decade of a young woman who was dating the bartender and came in asking if she could leave her child for just a little bit. When the bartender refused her, she ran out and sped away hitting a tree about a half mile away in an apparent suicide. The woman’s ghost has only been sighted a few times, but patrons have claimed to see her in the upstairs window beckoning for them to come in.
