TRENDING NOW – While the kitchen is often the busiest room in the house, it is also one of the most important rooms when it comes to renovations. An upgraded, vibrant kitchen that incorporates elements of personal style can make the room more attractive while increasing the home’s overall value. An easy way to give your kitchen an instant upgrade is by adding color in places that complement the decor of the room. Elements such as cabinetry, sinks and appliances are good places to start the facelift process while also adding more functionality. Consider Cabinets

Not only can new cabinets provide the benefit of more storage space, they also present an opportunity to incorporate some colorful style into the kitchen. Make your splash with vibrant color on the cabinets themselves, or pair softer hues with muted contrasts to create an eye-pleasing backdrop for bold color appliances and vibrant accents and accessories. If you opt for a more traditional finish such as cherry, black, walnut, white or maple, you can still add visual interest to your kitchen design by contrasting the upper and lower cabinetry or creating a standout island in a different tone. Simply updating the hardware with a colorful twist can be an inexpensive alternative for adding color as well. Think About Sinks

Once overlooked as an option for introducing style in the kitchen, today’s kitchen sinks accommodate a wide range of designs and preferences. Both function and aesthetics – including unexpected, vibrant color – are important when replacing your sink. An option such as the Elkay Quartz Luxe collection comes in six bold colors and three mount styles with a variety of bowl options and add-on accessories. The collection combines the highest-quality quartz with a high-performance, UV-stable acrylic resin for a durable sink that is easy to maintain, fade-resistant, vibrant in color and stain- and odor-resistant. For added convenience, Elkay’s unique quartz finishing process delivers a satin-smooth, non-porous surface that prevents foods, liquids and bacteria from sticking to it. Because natural quartz is four times harder than granite, it has the ability to resist scratches, smudges, heavy impact and heat up to 535 F, making it both a practical and attractive option. Explore a variety of models that can help make your renovation complete at elkay.com/quartz. Add Stylish Appliances

A complete set of matching appliances makes for a modern and inviting appearance. Popular finish options include smudge-proof stainless steel, chrome, black or white, but if you’re really looking to brighten the room, some lines are available in colors such as red, blue, orange or green. Although the visual impact is important, remember to keep practical considerations in mind and look for the features – such as side-by-side versus drawered refrigerators, for example – that work best for your space and lifestyle. Find Your Ideal Sink

A successful kitchen renovation captures every element of the space – including the kitchen sink. Select the right type, features and material to suit your family’s needs with four easy steps from the experts at Elkay: 1. Choose your sink material and color. Color, texture and sheen all provide ways for you to express your style. Stainless steel, copper, fine fireclay and colored quartz all offer unique benefits and aesthetics. 2. Choose your sink type. Whether top mount with a finished rim, undermount to create a seamless appearance, universal mount which can be installed either above or below your countertop or an exposed apron front mount that extends out slightly further than the cabinet below it, your new sink needs to be in sync with your chosen countertop material. Whether or not you plan to replace your countertops will also affect your options. 3. Choose your sink features. Select the number of bowls based on how you work. Single bowls can accommodate larger cooking sheets while double bowls allow for a quick wash/rinse sequence. Depth is an important consideration, too. 4. Choose your sink size and accessories. The size of your new sink is dependent upon the size of the cabinet it is installed in. Sink-base cabinets can be created specially to fit an installed sink. Also, look for accessories that work with your sink to save space and add convenience in the kitchen. Options include cutting boards, rinsing baskets, colanders, bottom grids and drains, among others. **Who To Call** WEST SUBURBAN KITCHEN DESIGNERS RiteWay Custom Homes (630) 790-8144 • www.ritewaycustomhomes.com HomeWerks Kitchen & Bath (866) 265-8895 • www.myhomewerks.com Vineyard Chic Kitchens (630) 464-1334 • www.vineyardchickitchen.com Redstart Construction (630) 305-8230 • www.redstartconstruction.com Total Kitchen & Bath (630) 495-2010 • www.totalkitchenbath.com Cupboards Chicago Design Group (630) 267-0440 • www.cupboardsltd.com

THE SLINKMAN FAMILY, NAPERVILLE

 SPEAK LOVE

Job transfers have moved Christian and Adrienne Slinkman from Naperville to Dallas and Phoenix for the past 20 years, but each time they move back to Naperville due to their strong ties to Grace Pointe Church in Naperville and their friendships built along the way. Their three kids, Caitlin (16), Joshua (13) and Madeleine (11) attend District 204 schools and are involved in football, basketball, baseball, soccer, gymnastics and dance to name a few; but the one theme that rules the Slinkman household is, “Serve others – especially those that can never repay you.” As actions speak louder than words, the family believes in mission work and have volunteered with Feed My Starving Children and have supported missionaries in Guatemala and Ecuador. Joshua and Caitlin also participate on a missionary trip to Compton, CA each year. The family value of mission work began after Christian and Adrienne attended a church in Arizona and were introduced to the non-for profit Live Love, highlighting the importance of local work. “Growing up, missions were always something foreign to me,” Chris says. “Live Love was used by God to stir my heart and create a passion for reaching people locally. The world around us has many needs and we do not have to look very far outside of our front door to see them.” This sparked the creation of Speak Love, a non-profit created by The Slinkmans to serve the local community. Speak Love hosts events such as Breakfast & Books, as well as Movie Nights, providing free and discounted meals with complimentary books and entertainment to crowds of 200+ people. They will be adding soccer clinics and community cleanups. The next event is March 18th, donate or help at

March 2017 – BALLYDOYLE IRISH PUB, DOWNERS GROVE Got hair? Got long beautiful hair? Even if you don’t, are you willing to shave it all off? How about if in doing so, you raised critical funds for childhood cancer research? On March 14th (7pm), Ballydoyle Irish Pub will be hosting its 8th annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation Shaving Event. The stage will be set up with three barbers/beauticians to shave participant’s locks. “Each person who gets their head shaved is encouraged to inspire friends and family to pledge donations to support the foundation,” says Phil Cullen, Ballydoyle Irish Pub owner. “Last year they raised over $80,000 in one night!” The St. Baldrick’s Foundation has funded more than $200 million in childhood cancer research grants including many local Chicago institutions like University of Illinois Chicago and Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital. “These grants,” says Anja Kloch, Chief Development Officer for St. Baldrick’s Foundation, “help give more kids access to clinical trials, train the next generation of pediatric oncologists, and fund specific childhood cancer research projects.” The head-shaving events began as a challenge between businessmen and have grown from one event in 2000 to over 1200 events in 2016. Events take place in pubs, restaurants, schools, churches, parks, malls and more. “We currently have more than 150 St. Baldrick’s head-shaving events set to take place in Chicago and its surrounding suburbs,” says Kloch. So, if you can’t make the fun at Ballydoyle the week of St. Patrick’s Day, you can probably find another Chicagoland event to participate in. Phil Cullen likes to make his Ballydoyle event feel like a big party for the neighborhood. “You have to be there to see and feel the sense of community that night,” claims Phil. “It makes you proud to live and work in Downers Grove. We all know someone touched with cancer, and we become a place where people can gather to help the fight.” If you would like to get involved as a “shavee” or a donor at Ballydoyle or another event in the western suburbs, just go to www.stbaldricks.org/events and search the towns near you. J.K. EGERTON, GLEN ELLYN Business on the Board
How the World’s Greatest Game Can Build Better Leaders

Jim Egerton learned how to play chess when he was in grade school, started the chess club when he hit high school and became State Champion in his first high school tournament. The rest, he says, is history.

A long-time resident of Glen Ellyn, Jim has taught chess in many locations including many schools and the Naperville Park District. Starting out his career as a math teacher and then spending 23 years in corporate training management and information technology, he has found his skills at playing chess have helped him advance his career in both teaching and business. “Many of the strategies and tactics used in both are the same and knowing how they relate can accelerate your success,” explains Jim. “You can improve your strategic thinking and decision-making skills using one of the oldest and most popular games in the world.”

He knew he needed to share his story and his experience with the business world, so he wrote the book, Business on the Board: How the World’s Greatest Game Can Build Better Leaders and developed a corporate training and talent development company alongside it.

Jim believes you can develop a leader’s mindset by using the chess method of decision-making. Instead of business cases, he packed the book with thought-provoking lessons from various chess games and tournaments that address topics such as leadership, employee development, financial investing and risk management. “I guide you to be strategically stronger and tactically sharper so that you are better prepared to win at the game of business,” says Jim.

The book was published though Crescendo Publishers last fall and can be found through Amazon Createspace, Kindle online and in local book stores in Glen Ellyn, Naperville, and Downers Grove. Jim is also available for speaking engagements and training. –Mindy Kyle KNOW A LOCAL AUTHOR? March 2017 – NAPERVILLE NEIGHBORHOOD FAVORITE

Whether you’re looking for a place to get into March Madness or a friendly place to bring your family you have to make a stop in Naperville at a local neighborhood favorite Crosstown Pub & Grill! Jim Nichols opened up this one of a kind pub in 2007 and has been cooking up the best wings ever since. He opened his second location in Batavia two years ago to share his amazing wings further west. Why is it one of a kind? A great pub to watch the games, a friendly place to bring the family, the best servers and everything on the menu is superb. Having been here many times before this time we were on a wing mission. Although we didn’t want to fill up on “smalls” or appetizers we couldn’t resist the delicious combo of the Papi’s Fritas. Crispy waffle fries are topped with bourbon grilled chicken, shredded Chihuahua cheese, tomatoes, onions, cilantro, avocado then drizzled with buffalo sour cream to make the perfect collaboration of flavors. Then on to the wings! Crosstown has a great selection with 3 wing types, 19 dry rubs, 21 sauces and 5 dressings for dipping. Wings come as large bone-in, breaded, naked or grilled and never frozen. Tenders are boneless 3oz. chicken breaded or grilled and the Buff-a-lopes are 2oz. boneless breaded chicken breast cutlets. Our server, Mallory Mencinsky was a wing expert and not only helped us with so many questions about combos but also made some great recommendations. We loved the lemon pepper rub on the tenders and the Shut UP sauce on the side adds punch. For the grilled bone-in the jalapeno rub covered in the Sweet Habanero is definitely for those who like heat. The Buff-a-lopes were great with the Mesquite BBQ rub and then the Shut Up on the side for heat or the Sweet BBQ for a more mild taste. Crosstown has a lot to offer from trivia, local craft beers, daily specials, a wing of the month, a dynamic American menu, and a friendly atmosphere all makes it a fun place for the family for lunch or dinner! While in Naperville let general manager, Dan Humenik take care of your family! Crosstown Pub & Grill

CORNED BEEF, CABBAGE, AND BEAUJOLAIS! St. Patrick’s Day is quickly approaching and being an “Irish Wino” beer isn’t my drink of choice. So what do I generally pair with the typical corned beef and cabbage? Beaujolais. Of course I generally like to step it up a notch so nothing less than a Cru Beaujolais will do.

There are 10 areas of Cru Beaujolais (Burgundy, France) and one of my long time favorites is Fleurie. Fleurie is fairly central and the elegance and seduction that comes through in the wine from this area is remarkable.

One of my favorite Cru Beaujolais from Fleurie is Domaine Lucien Lardy “Les Roches” (the one I am enjoying right now is a 2014). It was named after the pink granite rocks showing on the sandy soil of the Fleurie appellation. This racy little wine has gorgeous aromas of ripe raspberries and blackberries with flavors of strawberry fields forever, and a hint of cherry followed by a fleshy and juicy body with soft tannins. If the aromas don’t seduce you enough, the finish will, lasting for a long time. You could drink this through 2019 and since it retails for around $20, it’s an affordable luxury.

Cru Beaujolais from Fleurie is often served on the cooler side. It pairs well with red meat, poultry, grilled salmon, soft cheeses, and one of my personal favorites…a well-stocked charcuterie board! In honor of St. Patty’s Day, try a bottle with your corned beef and cabbage and enjoy the month dedicated to shamrocks and shenanigans! Sláinte!
