June 2016 – LOCAL TOURISTS

In June we celebrate our fathers, so in the Kucharski house that means dragging dad away from his office to join us on a Mom’s Little Black Book adventure. It’s difficult to get Joe to stop working and have some fun; but, the idea of a Segway Tour peaked his interest enough to play local tourist for the afternoon.

As soon as we arrived, Joe was like a kid in a toy shop. He couldn’t contain his excitement to test the speed and dexterity of the two wheeled machine as he impatiently waited his turn behind his daughters. The girls were equally as excited, and I was thrilled to have found a family activity where no one was rolling their eyes or looking at their watch to return to work!

Joe temporarily thought he was Evil Knievel and tried to push the boundaries of his personal chariot, but thanks to the built-in safety features of the Segway – he was never in danger as each contains a gyroscope allowing the machine to self-balance in response to the rider's movements; thus making it easy enough for grandma and entertaining enough for kids (….or adult children!)

If you are at least 12 years old and at minimum 100 lbs., you can ride a Segway; so, my girls were in independence heaven riding the eight-mile track along the lakefront, past Buckingham Fountain, the Adler Planetarium, the Field Museum, the Shedd Aquarium, and everyone’s favorite – Soldier Field. Jochy, our tour guide, made the experience positively entertaining. He was informative, as well as funny, which was a perfect balance for a husband, who fully appreciates the history of everything, and teenager girls who -- well, don’t! Absolutely Segway Chicago is open year round. Winter, spring, summer and fall – so that means – any day or any night is the perfect time to be a local tourist!

 Overview

Sightseeing in Chicago on a Segway is fun, unique, and exhilarating. If you can stand, you can ride! These self-balancing machines do the work for you. Explore Chicago by day or night with friendly tour guides and your very own Chicago chariot on two wheels. Absolutely Segway Chicago

June 2016 – ARTFUL AL FRESCO DINING

When Lawrence Colburn got off the train in Geneva he knew this was the paradisiacal place to open his European inspired café and wine bar. Colburn shared with us, “you can feel the heartbeat on the Fox”. A former sommelier at fine dining restaurants in Chicago with a love for art Colburn, opened Preservation Bread and Wine on June 19, 2010. His desire to educate and share his passion about European wines and cheeses can be heard as he visits each table. Colburn takes pride in all he does from greeting each guest at the door to using only seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. The aromas that extrude from this divine café can be smelled down the street. The meats, turkey and pastrami are roasted in house while the Amish chicken is locally raised. The bread is baked fresh daily for the cold and warm sandwiches. It’s all the attention to detail and the not only beautiful but delicious food that will keep you wanting more. Now that the weather is warming Preservation Bread and Wine is a wonderful intimate cafe to dine alfresco. This quaint outdoor patio is located away from the pedestrians on the busy 3rd street. Surrounded by hanging greens and flowers grab an artisan cheese and charcuterie plate, a savory bite and a glass of wine, sit back and relax. With at least 18 imported cheeses and an extensive wine menu the only problem you may have is making a decision! We always ask for a recommendation and about any upcoming “secret” events. Each small plate is best shared and with so many favorites on the menu you will want to try it all. The almost too beautiful to eat sobrasada crostini is topped with fresh honey and edible flowers. The bacon jam costini is topped with blue cheese arugula and makes for a perfect combination of sweet, salty, crunchy and creamy. The salad we always go back to is the butter lettuce with tangy citrus and sweet candied walnuts. The baguette serrano ham and salchichon with queso tetilla and olives sandwich is a new favorite. Warm sandwiches are unique but each equally delicious. The dill rye bread pastrami, focaccia lamb meatloaf, brioche grilled cheese and grilled sourdough smoked turkey will comfort your soul while tantalizing your palate. The savory bite casseroles are the epitome of comfort food. Feed your spirit while soaking in the sunshine! Preservation Bread & Wine

GOOD WINE IS MEANT TO BE SHARED

My friend has been a novice of wine but always enjoyed a good bottle. Over the years with hanging out with me, he has indulged in one or hundred (give or take) excellent bottles. To my surprise he picked up a Dominus Estate Christian Moueix, 2001. He was as excited to show me as I was to see it. Needless to say I was proud. Despite being new to wine, he had remembered that Dominus was the bottle that started his love for wine and played a big part in starting our friendship. We both fondly remember the night we opened the Dominus, 2005 and a few more after that… It was a great night, even the parts we don’t remember. He was hoping for the right time to open it up and that time came. It was absolutely memorable. Dominus Estate Christian Moueix, 2001 had alluring aromas of new leather, blackberries, white pepper, vanilla extract and this richness I could not forget. This was followed by flavors of lush and ripe dark fruits, green pepper, tobacco and some mild oak. In my opinion, this was pretty close to perfect. From start to finish it was quite the experience. So my friend shared a very good bottle with me. I’m grateful for that and the experience. I’ve always stated sharing your best bottles with people you love will be more fun and memorable than sucking down that really good bottle by yourself! Slainte! SUMMER FUN Well, summer is finally here and if you’re family is anything like mine, you’ve been waiting a long time for it’s arrival. Now that the kids are out of school and the days are getting longer, there are so many fun things to do together. From packing your calendar with festival favorites to lounging with your Glancer Magazine poolside– you and yours won’t get bored if you reside within Chicago’s western suburbs, that’s for sure. Some of our festival favorites include Naperville’s Ribfest (www.ribfest.net ) and Eyes to Skies Fest in Lisle ( www.eyestotheskies.org ), which both take place over 4th of July weekend. Ribfest has some fabulous musical entertainment this year including Sheryl Crow, Lee Brice and Gin Blossoms. Eyes to the Skies will be featuring some amazing musical acts as well, but my favorite attention grabber at this event is no doubt the hot air balloons that launch throughout the 3-day festival.

They are simply breathtaking! Having grown up in Lisle, the 4th of July was always my favorite weekend of the year! Kicking it off with the parade where I marched proudly with my softball team, then some swim time with friends at Lisle Pool (now Sea Lion Aquatic Park), finishing it off with family as we watched the fireworks on the hill at Lisle Fest. So many memories! Another family favorite of ours is the Sugar Grove Corn Boil taking place July 28-31. Filled with all things fun including food vendors, musical entertainment, a carnival and more, area families will love that this festival has free entry + free entertainment. Other great events happening this summer include Taste of Wheaton, June 2-5; Swedish Days in Geneva, June 21-26; Rotary Grove Fest in Downers Grove, June 23-26; Glancer Magazine’s Splash of Color Annual Celebration, July 13; Jazz In Glen Ellyn, July 16; Naperville Woman’s Club 57th Annual Fine Art Fair, July 9 & 10 and many more! We hope you enjoy this issue filled with all things “summer fun” throughout the western suburbs. Enjoy your summer and thanks for reading!

GET TO KNOW LISLE EYES TO SKIES BALLOONER AL VLZANY OF WESTERN SPRINGS

The Lisle Eyes to the Skies festival has grown dramatically since it started more than 30 years ago and attracts about 70,000 each year. Highlights include everything from fireworks, to the carnival, to incredible musical performances; but, the emphasis of course is daily launches of hot air balloons and a balloon glow.

Al Vlzany has been assisting balloon landings since 1992 and has worked as a balloon crew member since 2012. He then passed his checkride for his own balloon license, and by 2015 was chairperson of the balloon field selecting the shape balloons, making arrangements for pilots, supervising the tether rides, and overall general operations.

He loves hot air balloons and enjoys flying his own in and around Minooka and Kankakee. When people ask him about flying in a balloon, he says the experience is hard to describe since there is no sensation of movement. “When you are in a balloon several hundred or thousand feet above the ground, it is hard to describe how you got there,” he says. “The ground just gets further away. In any other aircraft there is a sensation of movement.”

Summer is the perfect time to fly his gliders by day and his hot air balloon by night! Photos Submitted

The kids also love to simply bike to the local Winfield CVS, Dairy Queen, or Dunkin Donuts and get sweet treats or drinks with their friends; or head over to Red Hawk Park in Carol Stream or Pleasant Hill School to play basketball or football with the gang. Each summer the family also enjoys their annual tradition of attending the Illinois State Fair. There is never a lonely moment when you’re a Dring because there is usually a sibling to be found close by. Tonya and Dan have five kids - a 19-year old son plus 15-year old quadruplets. Add in a few friends and they can pretty much get a group discounted rate anywhere they go for summer fun! The Drings have been living in Winfield for the past 6 years and love the small town homey feel. Their favorite place to eat is Tony’s Steamers in Winfield where they can relish a great Vienna Beef hotdog, and they especially love Monday night’s Buy One, Get One Free Pizza at Evviva's Pizza in downtown Wheaton! Nathan (19) enjoys his summer break from the College of Dupage hanging out at Mile Long Records in downtown Wheaton while Reagan (15) volunteers for FTEA (Friends for Therapeutic Equine Activities) and takes horseback riding lessons at Kingsway Farms in Winfield. Caroline (15) and Heath (15) are very involved in all Bands at Wheaton North High School and Wil (15) participates in Cross Country. Big family summer fun is sure to include weekly visits to College Church in Wheaton where the entire Dring family is very active! Photos by Lynn Logan
