KRISTIN CAVALLARI BOOK SIGNING AT ANDERSON’S BOOKSHOP, NAPERVILLE

Kristin Cavallari, best known for her time on the hit reality series Laguna Beach and follow-up show, The Hills, was recently in Naperville meeting fans and signing her newly released book, “Balancing in Heels” at Anderson’s Bookshop. Besides her notoriety on reality T.V., she is also recognized as the wife of Chicago Bears quarterback, Jay Cutler, and as a frequent commentator on E! Network. Cavallari also successfully runs multiple business ventures while raising three young children. Glancer Magazine had the privilege of reading an advance copy of her book and was absolutely engaged visually with the easy to read format, personal full color photos, and quick blurbs about eating healthy, dressing stylish, makeup cues, simple exercise tips, and private stories of home life with Jay and the kids. In our face-to-face interview, Cavallari shared her favorite restaurants in Chicago, which included Girl & The Goat and Balena, and although she is all about eating healthy, when out and about, she will definitely be indulging with a full bowl of pasta, dessert, and a glass of wine. Raising her kids to also focus on eating real foods and staying clear of anything processed or artificial, Cavallari similarly allows her kids to be kids; so, when the giant Costco box of goldfish comes out during a playdate with friends, she doesn’t freak out. “I want them to have a good foundation - then obviously they are going to be kids – they are going to go high school and college – they are going to be eating pizza and drinking beer – they’re going to do all that stuff. As long as they have something to come back to – I want them to have a solid foundation at home.” Speaking of home, Cavallari is forth coming about being married with children, and just like the old television show from the 80s, life isn’t always perfect. She shares openly in her book, “I felt okay with it because I’m finally okay with who I am. I’m okay with the fact that my life isn’t perfect, my relationship isn’t perfect - I’m just trying to do the best job that I can,” she says. “I want other woman to know that there is no such thing as a perfect relationship or perfect life.” With Mommy Couture on the forefront this month, Cavallari loves to shop at Zara for her kids and InterMix for herself; and of course, loves her own shoes from her Kristin Cavallari/Chinese Laundry shoe line and her personally created bohemian-inspired jewelry line. From fashion, to kids, to married life with Jay, Cavallari makes balancing health, happiness, and hard-work look like a breeze! -Kristen Kucharski FULL FEATURE Q & A INTERVIEW: “Balancing in Heels”: My Journey to Health, Happiness, and Making It All Work Summary from Rodale Books: Kristin Cavallari is best known for her time on the hit reality series Laguna Beach and follow-up show, The Hills. But Cavallari is so much more than a reality star. Since her time on MTV, she has had a hand in multiple business ventures, including jewelry design, a line of shoes, and a lifestyle app. Besides that, she is the mother of two young boys and a baby girl, the wife of Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, and a frequent guest and commentator on E! Network. Cavallari is busier than ever, and her fans always ask the same question: How does she balance it all? In Balancing in Heels, Cavallari answers just that question and more, sharing how she juggles all facets of her life with style and grace. Q. I love the layout of the book...it's very engaging visually and an easy read for a busy mom.....love the color photos, quick summary blurbs and suggestions, quick tips, easy recipes…...very nice. Who decided to write the book this way? I wish I could take credit for that – I cannot. Rodale, my publisher, they make beautiful books. That’s one of the reasons I wanted to work them. I met with five different publishers and they were my favorite because their books are so aesthetically beautiful.

 Q. You talk about the “non-diet” in your book...basically eating real food and not denying yourself, so long as it's not processed or artificial. Seems easy at home, but difficult when on the go. What are your favorite restaurants in the Chicago area? Favorite menu items? Do you have a favorite restaurant in Naperville? In Chicago, I love Girl & The Goat. I love Balena for Italian food. If I’m going to eat out and indulge, I’m going to go for some sort of pasta, and I’m definitely going to get dessert, and I’m going to have a glass of wine. I have not eaten anywhere in Naperville, although Jay’s cousin use to live here and she use to cut his hair, so we would come down with the kids – but they moved; so we no reason to come here, but just driving through today, it’s so cute – so now we need to venture down here since it’s so cute! Q. You have 3 young children –let’s talk Baby Talk real quick – In a mission for healthy eating - You make your own Goats milk baby formula. For the mom on the go like you, is it portable? Yes. So, I would make enough for the day, when they were younger and eating a ton of bottles, but you can make it and it lasts for up to a week. I also put in probiotics and coconut oil in each bottle, so you just have to be somewhere where you can bring all that stuff. It’s definitely a pain in the butt, it’s not easy, but I think it’s worth it. Its milk, so it also has to be kept cold, so then you would also need to have a means to warm it up. What do you do or how do your kids respond when you’re at playgroups and the big Costco box of Goldfish or fruit chews come out? I’m guessing these aren’t in your “wheel of healthy choices”? I don’t make a big deal about it. My kids will eat it. My kids eat some of that stuff occasionally and I’m okay with that. I ate all that stuff growing up and I’m alive. I just prefer when we’re at home, that everything is healthy. I don’t want to be that mom that is super strict because I feel like when you’re too strict, that’s when you go off the deep end and kids go the other extreme. I don’t want that to happen to my kids. I want them to have a good foundation - then obviously they are going to be kids – they are going to go high school and college – they are going to be eating pizza and drinking beer – they’re going to do all that stuff. As long as they have something to come back to – I want them to build that foundation. Q. I love the honesty in your book from your personal experiences during your teenage years, to dating ‘bad eggs’; days without showering or brushing your teeth; as well as, the simple fact that you and Jay actually fight sometimes over kids and nonsense….imagine that in a marriage?! How did you get to the point to feeling so comfortable being so open & honest in your book? Was Jay okay with this? I felt okay with it because I’m finally okay with who I am. I’m okay with the fact that my life isn’t perfect, my relationship isn’t perfect - because at the end of the day, I’m just trying to do the best job that I can. I don’t think anyone has it all figured out and I want other woman to know that there is no such thing as a perfect relationship or perfect life. Jay’s totally okay with it. He never once told me not to write something, or put something in. He never read it and said, ‘I wish you didn’t write that’. He was so supportive from the get go. Jay’s great – I’ve never really met anyone like him that really just doesn’t care what other people think. Q. I was surprised to read that early on in your relationship with Jay, you broke off the engagement because of your desire to work and Jay's desire for you to be a stay-at-home mom. This made me think of many women in the 1980s who wanted to work and keep their maiden names. Do you think many men share Jay’s traditionalist feelings, but are not as open about them until after marriage and children? That was only one of the reasons – there were many. It wasn’t like Jay came out and said, ‘I want you to be a stay-at-home mom’. He never said those words, but I knew that’s what he wanted, but I also knew that’s not why he fell in love with me. He knew who I was when he met me and knows when I work, I’m happier, which in turn makes me a better wife, a better mother, so everyone wins. It’s a win win situation for everybody. I’m sure there are guys that are afraid to speak up. I think you should. I think that’s why it’s so important to know yourself, so when you do get into a relationship, you can say what you need. I think a lot of people may be unhappy in their relationships because they don’t speak up, and you can’t blame the other person when they don’t know how you’re feeling. So it’s important to know what you want and need from someone.
  Q. Speaking of kids, our April issue is all about Mommy Couture and their stylish kids. You talk a lot about fashion in your book. Where in the Chicago area do you love to shop for yourself and your kids? My favorite store right now for kids is Zara – which is all over, including Chicago which makes it really easy. For myself, I only ever shop at InterMix.

 Q. You were able to take your love for fashion and create a business - Shoes! You have your own shoe line. Exactly how many pairs of shoes do you own? Without including my own shoe line, probably about 50. Will you soon design children's shoes as well? I would love to design a line of little girls’ shoes. I’ve been talking to Chinese Laundry about that. And your jewelry line - kids’ jewelry in the future? Yes, we are definitely going to do something. I think we are going to start with one piece and see how it does and then hopefully expand on that.
 Q. You also have a chapter on makeup. What is your favorite makeup brand or local Chicago area store where you purchase your makeup? If I had to choose one brand, I’d maybe say, NARS; but, I kind of mix it up. I have Giorgio Armani as my favorite foundation; NARS makes a great blush, they also make a great eye shadow; I have a Channel eyebrow pencil that I love. I like Armani mascara. Q. All this talk of Chicago and favorite places - you moved from Illinois to California during your high school years, where did you attend school in Illinois when you were in your elementary years, junior high, and first in high school? I moved to Barrington from Colorado when I was going into the 6th Grade, so I went to Station Middle School and then started at Barrington High School for about a month before I moved to Laguna Beach.

 Q. Would you consider yourself a Midwest girl or a California girl? I think I’m both. I think I have a bit of both, which is a good little mix.

 Q. Having been on the Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County reality show - which affected you both positively and negatively – You have shared that you would love to produce a reality show, but what if you were approached today to do a reality show of your home life with Jay and your children, would you? We have been. I don’t want to put my kids on T.V. I want them to be kids. I want them to live as normal as a life as possible. When they turn 18, if they want to pursue a career in entertainment, we can talk about it then. As long as I have the ability to say no – I’m going to say no.

 Q. We have a group of junior tween and teen reporters about the age you were when you began your Laguna Beach reality show journey. What advice would you give them about life then and now? I guess to go after your dreams and work hard, but not to stress about the little stuff because everything always works out in the end. Just know that life always works out – and you will get what you need, not necessarily what you want.

 Q. If you could sum up your family values or family motto in one sentence ....what would it be? Probably what goes around comes around #SoCelebrity
