MOM KNOWS BEST

This is a fun issue! It highlights many local favorites that are preferred by area moms. As a local mom myself, I have a few favorites of my own. From Oberweis Ice Cream (my first job at the Downtown Naperville location when I was 16) to Smallcakes in St. Charles (THE. BEST. CUPCAKES. EVER.), my top favorites include pretty much any place that caters to my sweet tooth. Two of my three girls have a sweet tooth just like me, so it’s safe to say that these two places would also rank high on their favorites list, among many others. Other local favorites of mine include Spring Bluff Nursery in Sugar Grove/Elburn where they have the most beautiful selection of plants, flowers and trees, and Nona Jo’s for the most perfect home accessories including the cutest signs. When it comes to treating others, I love Creme de le Creme in Lisle and Francesca’s in Geneva/Naperville for unique gifts. For the kids, I adore Learning Express where we can always find the latest must-have trends and Blackberry Farm where the pony rides and the zip line on the playground leave my girls feeling fulfilled after a day of fun. For home improvements, my latest and greatest find is Patriot Heating & Cooling Services, Inc.. They replaced our entire system last month with a high-efficiency unit and we could not be happier with the service. So great to work with! West suburban Chicago is filled with countless places that have fast become favorites to local moms. From one-of-a-kind boutiques and kid shops, to outstanding home improvement shops. THE VINTAGE ISSUE

I love all things vintage, no doubt inheriting this fascination with yesteryear from my mom. She was the most creative antique shopper I have ever known before she passed away at age 44. It makes me smile that my oldest has also inherited a love for the vintage-inspired. Together, we set out every few weeks in search of new antique shops, vintage boutiques, local fairs and more. I’m always looking for ceramic candy dishes from the 50s that have large roses on top (pictured). My mom used to have a beautiful collection, and sadly, they were broken during a move when I was in junior high. It was devastating because she loved this collection so much. Since these dishes are so rare, I have only found a couple of them, but my search continues. While browsing the shelves for candy dishes, my daughter searches for vintage fashion hats and so far, she has some really beautiful pieces. She will have a very special collection someday to pass down to her children and grandchildren. A day spent antiquing is a day filled with happiness. If you love the vintage-inspired, then you will love this issue. Filled with many stories celebrating yesteryear, from Upcycling the Old to Fabulous and Vintage Homes for Sale to 7 Spectacular Places to Shop for Yesteryear, plus our cover feature highlighting 15 Vintage Inspired Lifetimes, this issue will be loved by many. DE LA FINCA

Sometimes the only way for me to beat the heat during summer in Chicago is to sip on some sparkling wine. That paired with some company, music and patio times is perfect. Cava is always a great choice and Raventos i. Blanc consistently puts out affordably delicious juice! I opened up their De La Finca, 2013 which was aged on the lees for 36 months. De la Finca comes from a historical vineyard, situated 50 km to the West of Barcelona; its geology and microclimate makes it a formidable rival to the most prestigious of wines. This is a blend of 50% Xarel-lo, 40% Macabeu and 10% Parellada. This has beautiful aromas of fresh citrus, floral and minerality amongst other alluring notes. Mouthwatering flavors follow with notes of citrus, tropical and floral. It’s absolutely delicious and rather decadent. Raventos i. Blanc makes many Cavas for different price points but this one retails for around $30. So the next time you’re outside on your patio maybe pop open a bottle of Cava to battle the heat. I believe it’s what the doctor ordered. Sláinte!
