FIRECRACKERED, A COZY CAT PRESS MYSTERY Local author and publisher Patricia Rockwell has spent the last ten years creating a successful business in the light or “cozy” mystery genre. Along with authoring two of her own cozy mystery series, her publishing company, Cozy Cat Press, has helped publish over 50 authors with a combined 200+ titles in their catalog. Patricia has an extensive background in academia, editing and publishing. She received her doctorate from the University of Arizona and was a researcher and Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette for fourteen years before she retired. Patricia’s most recent book, FIRECRACKERED, is the fifth in her Essie Cobb senior sleuth mystery series, a series that was inspired by her mom and her friends at an assisted living facility. The books follow 90-year-old amateur sleuth Essie Cobb and her pals at the Happy Haven Assisted Living Facility as they go on adventures and solve mysteries. In FIRECRACKERED, Essie is determined to investigate why a random Fourth of July firework is shot on the front lawn of the retirement home right where she and new resident, Lester Mills are standing, hitting him in the keister. As he is being taken to the hospital, she wonders was it really an accident? Or is there something more sinister behind the explosion? FIRECRACKERED can be found on Amazon, along with the other four books in the Essie Cobb series – BINGOED, PAPOOSED, VALENTINED and GHOSTED. -Mindy Kyle ALL LITERARY LOCALS

GRETCHEN BERG, THE OPERATOR
Chicago area author, Gretchen Berg’s maternal grandmother was a switchboard operator in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, back when it was possible for an operator to listen in on all your calls, and according to Gretchen’s mom, she did just that. “I was working in the field of Genealogy, compiling narratives for clients,” says Gretchen. “It was while researching my own family history that I was inspired to write The Operator.”

The Operator is the story of Vivian Dalton, a small-town operator in 1950’s America who relishes listening into her neighbors’ phone conversations until one day when she overhears an exceptionally shocking secret – and it’s about her. As secrets are unearthed about her family she is catapulted through a maze of unexpected twists.

“I had to do a lot of research for the time period,” says Gretchen. “It was important for me to get all the details right.” Along with general research, she spent many hours watching television programs and movies from those times and was thankful to have Turner Classic Movies available for an enjoyable variety.

The Operator was published by William Morrow/Harper Collins last month and can be found online and in bookstores now with an audio version coming soon. -Mindy Kyle

KAREN BEDORE, ANOTHER LIFETIME Aurora resident, Karen Bedore is a huge fan of the medieval/Renaissance time period, especially in Italy that fostered many amazing artists and musicians. The combination of that love and being a big fan of Doctor Who, inspired a curiosity of going back in time to meet some of the greats and see the world through their eyes. “I am a hopeless romantic,” says Karen, “and with my husband being an artist, the subject is close to my heart.” Another Lifetime is the story of twenty-two-year-old Aria Carucci who was left stunned that a recent discovery of a work from fifteenth-century artist Enzo Benenati was accompanied by a sketch of a woman who could be her twin. Her research to uncover the truth takes a universal turn and slides her back in time to 1459 Florence. Thrown together by chance, Aria and Enzo fall in love, only to be at the mercy of the hands of fate. The book is the first book in a trilogy series. Enzo’s Story, the second book was released in 2018, and the final book in the series will be released later this year. Another Lifetime and Enzo’s Story are currently available through Amazon .
