COMMUNITY MOURNS THE LOSS OF KANELAND HIGH SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER The community was shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Kane County Deputy Christopher Ruchaj. The media release posted earlier by the Kane County Sheriff's Office reads as follows: Kane County Deputy Sheriff Chris Ruchaj (1973-2024) It is with great sadness that Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain and Undersheriff Amy Johnson share the news of the death of one of their own. Deputy Christopher Ruchaj, age 50, passed away unexpectedly of cardiac arrest on February 14, 2024, at his home. He had been a part of the Kane County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) family since 1997. “There are no words to express our gratitude and appreciation for his many years of service and dedication to both the KCSO and the community he served,” said Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain. “Deputy Ruchaj was an extraordinary friend, co-worker and brother.” During his tenure, Deputy Ruchaj served on the patrol and warrant divisions and was currently working as the Community Resource Officer at Kaneland High School in Maple Park. Counselors have been made available to students and staff at the school as they process the loss of Deputy Ruchaj. Assistance is also being offered to his colleagues with the KCSO. Deputy Ruchaj was known for his passion for helping guide kids towards a positive path in life. He recently participated in a roundtable discussion concerning online safety, emphasizing the importance of parents engaging in conversations with their teenagers about the enduring nature of social media content. When not in uniform, Deputy Ruchaj was a cherished father of three and friend to all who knew him. He also previously served the Sugar Grove community as a Fire District Trustee. Deputy Ruchaj was, and will remain, highly regarded by those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced today that a Geneva man charged with crashing into a vehicle on the side of the roadway killing one man and seriously injuring another has been sentenced to ten years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Nicholas Roepke, 20 (d.o.b. 8/8/1992) appeared at his sentencing hearing this morning where Judge Michael Reidy handed down the sentence. On March 16, 2023, Roepke entered a blind plea of guilty to one count of Aggravated DUI Causing Death (Class 2 Felony) and one count of Aggravated DUI Causing Great Bodily Harm (Class 4 Felony). On March 10, 2022, Roepke appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Michael Reidy set bond at $500,000 with 10% to apply. Roepke posted the necessary 10%, or $50,000, later that day and was released from custody. He has remained out on bond since that time on SCRAM monitoring. Willie Mosley was Killed in March 2022 by Nicholas Roepke On March 7, 2022, at approximately 7:40 p.m., officers with the Aurora Police Department responded to a crash on northbound Eola Road. Upon their arrival, officers found the victim, seventy-three-year-old Willie Mosley, of Maywood, suffering from serious injuries. Mosley was immediately transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. An investigation into the crash found that Mosley and another individual had stopped on the road and, with the assistance of a good samaritan who pulled over to help, were reloading a refrigerator onto their pickup truck after it had fallen off. As the men were loading the refrigerator onto the truck, a vehicle, driven by Roepke, crashed into the truck pinning Mosley between the vehicle and the truck and injuring the two other men. The man traveling with Mosley sustained minor injuries and refused medical treatment. The man who pulled over to assist was taken to a hospital for medical attention after suffering serious injuries. Roepke was transported to a local hospital for medical attention to minor injuries and was subsequently released to the Aurora Police Department. The investigation also found that Roepke’s BAC was .214 shortly after the crash. “This afternoon, Nicholas Roepke learned that his decision to drive after he had been drinking will cost him the next ten years of his life,” Berlin said. “This cost however, pales in comparison to what that decision cost Willie Mosley’s family and friends, who are now left with just memories of Willie to see them through the rest of their lives. This decision also cost the injured man a permanent injury that will affect him for the rest of his life. The sad truth is that this tragedy, like all drunk driving fatalities, was 100% avoidable had Mr. Roepke not gotten behind the wheel that evening. I thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Robert Willis and Denis Cahill for their efforts in holding Mr. Roepke for the death of Willie Mosley.” Roepke will be required to serve 85% of his sentence before being eligible for parole. THE INCIDENT REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION GENEVA–A 17-year-old Geneva girl died May 17 from injuries sustained when she was struck by an eastbound Metra passenger train on the Union Pacific-West line underneath the Route 25 vehicle overpass. Geneva Police and Fire Department personnel were dispatched to the scene around 6:20 a.m. for a train accident involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, emergency responders located the teen on the railroad tracks. Paramedics administered first-aid measures to the teen, who was unresponsive and not breathing, but could not revive her. The Metra Police Department and Union Pacific Railroad employees arrived to assist Geneva Police with the crash investigation, which closed the tracks for rail traffic for more than two hours in Geneva, LaFox and Elburn. The incident remains under investigation by the Geneva Police Department, Metra, and the Kane County Coroner’s Office. Geneva Police will not be releasing the teen’s name at this time. The Kane County Coroner’s Office has scheduled an autopsy for Wednesday, May 18. AUTOPSY PENDING WITH THE KANE COUNTY CORONER'S OFFICE The Geneva Police Department is investigating a suspicious death after finding a 43-year-old Geneva woman dead from a fatal gunshot wound outside her home. A female relative living in the Chicago area called police at 8:02 p.m. May 4 to report the Geneva woman as possibly missing since 5 a.m. May 3. Geneva and St. Charles police responded to conduct a well-being check at a home in the 700 block of McKinley Avenue. Upon arrival, officers met with a male family member who was unable to answer officer questions or provide any substantiated information on the missing woman. Officers subsequently checked the home’s property and found the woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The male family member was taken into custody as a person of interest. The Kane County Major Crimes Unit was called to the home to assist with the investigation. Geneva Police do not believe there is a general threat to the public. An autopsy with the Kane County Coroner’s Office is pending, and no charges have been filed in the case, which remains an ongoing investigation. KANE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE IS INVESTIGATING A LOCAL AREA HOME INVASION AURORA TOWNSHIP–The Kane County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a home invasion that occurred on March 23, 2022, at approximately 9:54pm in the 1600 block of Solfisburg Ave., unincorporated Aurora, Illinois. Kane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a 9-1-1 call from a resident that stated three Latino men forced their way into the home. The offenders wore masks and were armed with handguns. The offenders unsuccessfully attempted to enter a safe inside the home and stole two guns from the residence before fleeing. The resident was not injured. Some evidence was recovered at the scene.
