HOW TO BE THE BEST VERSION OF YOU! This new monthly column will highlight how local area women can be the best version of themselves through everyday struggles that we face. Joann Pierce, a west suburban wellness and fitness enthusiast, will answer 3 everyday struggles that women face each month to help our readers to be the best version of themselves. Send Your Everyday Struggle to editorial@glancermagazine.com EVERYDAY STRUGGLE #1: Balancing work and kids can be overwhelming. How can I make morning time more fun and less frazzled? -Jenny A.,Glen Ellyn This will not be a new and amazing idea here, but how prepared are you? Are you picking out clothes and preparing lunches the night before? Make this a whole family thing. Everyone can pick out what they will wear tomorrow and help make lunches as part of the evening routine.

Energy given is energy received!! If you are negative in the morning, your children will probably follow your lead. Try turning up the music and watch everyone start to dance and sing without you saying a word. Do you want to spend a little time being silly or more time yelling and getting frustrated? Start your day off positive and planned to keep everyone moving! EVERYDAY STRUGGLE #2: I love to volunteer & help out, but when I do it gets piled on to the point where I am missing deadlines, making mistakes, etc.? How can I get “helping out” back to good? -Carol Z., Lisle The late Steve Jobs once said: “Focus is about saying no.” …. Isn’t that the truth! Over booking your calendar with commitments can derail your focus, pulling you away from the work that you truly want to do. It’s not good for your friendships, career or your soul! And if someone gets furious because of your confidence and ability to say “no?” Well, he or she was probably never your true friend or someone you should volunteer for. Better to know now “who and what” you prefer to spend your time with. Once you know how to say “no”, it’s easier to say, “yes” to those who deserve it! EVERYDAY STRUGGLE #3: Social Media is fun & keeps me connected, but some women are just as catty online as in person– from passive aggressive posts to unnecessary jabs at each other. How can I prevent myself from being one of their online targets? -Sammy P.,Geneva Being caddy is supposed to be a middle school thing, but everyone knows it doesn't always end there. I often recommend to my friends and clients to ask themselves; "how is this impacting my life?" and “If I react is it moving my life forward?”

Sometimes a reaction is exactly what caddy people are looking for because they think it gives them power over you. It also takes the focus off of them and puts it onto you. If you respond, you are empowering the caddy one! To avoid a chain reaction of caddy behavior, simply remove yourself from the situation and move on.

January 2016 – ENGAGING THE GENERATION GAP

Since taking Mom’s Little Black Book on the road to Washington, D.C., my daughter Marissa was captivated by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and wanted to see more; so, I was pleasantly surprised to find the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center in nearby Skokie. My younger daughter, Tessa, thought it might be boring for a kid; my girlfriend was worried it might be too graphic for her daughter; and my mom (who is of German descent) thought it might be too depressing. I encouraged the generation gap to join me anyway! We weren’t in the museum more than 5 minutes, before Tessa and her BFF were fully engaged in the Make a Difference! Harvey L. Miller Family Youth Exhibition, which features interactive exhibits using relevant and current technology, like taking selfies and making your own videos to learn how to affect positive change in the world. It was the perfect way to introduce the concepts of bullying, prejudice, and indifference to kids as young as 8 years old. Before long, we were gently walking downward in the dark part of the Karkomi Permanent Exhibition, as the symbolic architecture represented the descent into the dark era of time. The permanent exhibitions provided a vivid, yet not gory, look at the Holocaust by “honoring the memories of those who were lost and by teaching universal lessons that combat hatred, prejudice and indifference”.

We were guided by Docent, Barbara Jo, who effortlessly captured the legacy by sharing personal stories of local survivors, as Skokie was once home to over 7000 Holocaust Survivors. As we entered the light side of the exhibition, representing the rescue and renewal of the survivors, we met Holocaust Survivor and Museum President, Fritzie Fritzshall (pictured in the photo above with us). She was only 13 when she entered the Auschwitz concentration camp - - the kids connected - - the adults were humbled. OVERVIEW

The Museum is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Holocaust by honoring the memories of those who were lost and by teaching universal lessons that combat hatred, prejudice and indifference through exhibitions, architectural tours and survivor presentations. Illinois Holocaust Museum &

This month we are celebrating Wellness Warriors througout the western suburbs. Each of these amazing residents have a story that is both inspiring and worth sharing. AMELIA HENDRYX, Naperville

Growing up an extremely active person, Amelia’s desire to pursue a degree in dance was a natural fit for pursuing a healthy and dynamic lifestyle. She married and had a baby; but then everything changed in 2009 when she lost her second child at birth. “The desire and motivation that I had always had vanished as the grieving settled into my life,” Amelia confides. “This was the most in-active time of my life and it was evident in not only my physical appearance, but in my diet, personality and overall health.” Her world was rocked again in 2011 when her second daughter was born with countless medical needs. Amelia knew something needed to change in order for her to fully support her non-ambulatory child, who is not able to walk, or stand on her own. “She requires heavy equipment,” Amelia says. “I NEEDED to work out to handle all of her daily requirements.” So in June 2013, she purchased ChaLEAN Extreme and followed the plan exactly; and subsequently, watched the inches fall off. She added Shakeology to her routine and went from a chronically stress-sick person to someone whose depression and anxiety were entirely under control. In 2015, at 37 years old, Amelia competed in her first bikini contest at the Beachbody Coach Summit and was featured on their IG account! -Kristen Kucharski FUN FITNESS FACTS Where do you love to work out? I love working out at home, very early in the morning, to my Beachbody workouts!

What is your favorite workout routine or class? My top program is the 21 Day Fix Extreme! PiYo-low impact, crazy tone, and a feeling of everyday gratitude set you up for great days.

What is your favorite healthy snack? Since sweets are my go to-I love to make Shakeology chocolate peanut butter cups! I also love banana boats - graham crackers, peanut butter and banana. SUE ZUBEK, Wheaton

Although Sue has always been active, as each year passed, it became physically harder for her to stay fit; and, finding the time to focus on her own needs felt daunting amongst her three tween daughters’ daily schedules. Sue was aware that both her aunt and grandmother were individually diabetic and overweight, but when her own father, who had always lived a fairly healthy lifestyle, was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, and several other family members and friends were recently diagnosed with cancer, it made her think, "Wow, this could happen to me, too; I knew that I didn't want that for myself.” These events reinforced the importance of a healthy diet and regular fitness routine for Sue. She began to eat “bad” foods less frequently and smaller portions of them when she does. Activities such as the Wheaton Fun Run in Color with her kids, triathlons in Galena and Chicago, the Spirit of Racine Half Ironman, and the Navy Pier Perfect 10 became mainstays in this suburban mom’s routine. She now centers her cooking on what healthy foods her kids might eat, and enjoys reading Outside and Experience Life for fitness information and ideas.

“Small steps toward a larger goal are a great way to make a permanent change.” -Kristen Kucharski FUN FITNESS FACTS Where do you love to work out? I love variety so I love running/biking outside in summer/fall; and Orange Theory in Wheaton and my elliptical at home in the cooler months. What is your favorite workout routine or class? In general, running, walking/jogging with my dog, biking, hiking with the kids, and gardening. Also Heaven and Hell boot camp (killer weights workout); and yoga, weight training and spinning at the Wheaton Park District and Lifetime Fitness. What is your favorite healthy snack? I love nuts - especially toasted pecans; and KIND bars. HANK EBELING, Wheaton

When Hank was at Willowbrook High School, he was actively involved in football and track. He knew that in order to get better, stronger, faster, leaner, he would have to start working out on a regular basis. “Once I started, I never stopped,” Hank says. “You have to commit to ‘you’ to start any program.” Hank is so passionate about wellness that he opened his own fitness studio, H4 Training in Wheaton. “Besides being passionate, I honestly enjoy working out and when I look and feel good, I have the confidence to attack anything,” he says. “I love the overall health benefits, and it gives me the energy to push through long days as an entrepreneur.” Although fitness seems ingrained, Hank admits that even the most determined people have struggles in their wellness journey. “There were times in which I felt bored and didn’t have that extra push I needed,” he shares. “When you come to that place you must re-access your goals, and give yourself a spark with a new work out, and get back after it!” Hank feels blessed that his fiancée shares a desire for fitness which helps each of them stay motivated. They enjoy local races, such as the Waterfall Glen 10K, the Wheaton Light the Torch 5K, and the Wheaton Color Run 5K together. Hank works to encourage others by posting daily fitness motivational quotes, tips and client success stories on his H4 Facebook page. -Kristen Kucharski FUN FITNESS FACTS Where do you love to work out? H4 Training in Wheaton, of course! What is your favorite workout routine or class? I like a full body routine that is time efficient like the one we do at my gym H4. You get more bang for your buck and get big time benefits with strength and keeping lean. What is your favorite healthy snack? Orgain shake or homemade trailmix SOTIRIA “SAMMIE” KAPSIS, Naperville

After moving to Naperville a few years ago, Sotiria “Sammie” stopped working as a school counselor and became a stay at home mom; however, she found herself feeling down and eating to cope with her emotions. She was also nearing her 40’s, her metabolism was slowing down, and weight loss seemed impossible. “I even caught myself making negative remarks about my body in front of my daughters,” Sammie says. “That is when I decided it was time to make a change. I wanted to be a positive role model in my daughters’ lives.” Like many, Sammie made a New Year’s Resolution in 2011, but unlike most, as 2016 rings in, she is still going strong. She initially ordered P90X and became a part of an online challenge group. “If it wasn’t for that group, I would have quit on the 3rd day,” she says. “However posting sweaty pics, acknowledging others, and being acknowledged for my efforts was an extraordinarily positive and uplifting experience.” She has since formed a private accountability group, called Team Friends n Fitness. Each person does their own home fitness program, follows a portion controlled nutrition program and inspires one another through their daily struggles and triumphs. Sammie shares her journey, favorite recipes, articles, and team successes via www.fb.com/teamfriendsnfitness and Instagram family_friends_n_fitness, as well as twitter and periscope. -Kristen Kucharski FUN FITNESS FACTS Where do you love to work out? I love working out at home best because I can play my music and dance in between moves, and get a little silly with taking selfies and videos to show my friends in the group. What is your favorite workout routine or class? I love structured workouts that include HIIT (high intensity interval training), Tabata, weights and plyometrics; plus a day for yoga or stretching. ASHLIE ANDERSEN, Geneva

As an avid dancer, Ashlie Andersen was thrilled to take over State Street Dance Studio in downtown Geneva a little over a year ago. However, her life became more difficult when very shortly after, she gave birth to two twin boys two months premature and also struggled with her own health issues that kept her in the hospital for a month. Taking care of a new business and a new family was a challenge. “It was a very difficult job to do,” says Ashlie. “At one point, I had a very close friend remind me that I have to take care of myself as well.” She worked hard to get her body and health back to where it needed to be to keep her energy level up for her family and her dancers. “My family pushes me to keep my lifestyle healthy because if I’m not, I can’t be there for them in the ways they need me to be,” she explains. Typically, Ashlie does most of her workouts and conditioning in her own studio on her quiet time and also with the dancers. She wants to be a good role model for her students; she knows dancers have many difficult body image and eating issues. “It’s up to me,” Ashlie points out. “I need to promote a healthy balance and lifestyle as an example for them to live by.” –Mindy Kyle FUN FITNESS FACTS What is your favorite workout routine or class? I love a good Pilates class to strengthen the core. What is your typical “start the day right” breakfast? As a mom, I’m sure many can attest that the kids eat first. I feed them and then cook eggs with toast or a bagel and fruit for myself and try to give some to the kids. What is your favorite healthy snack? A smoothie! There are so many great and healthy ways to get in nutrients and calories through a fruity drink! What is your favorite healthy snack? Chocolate Shakeology blended with 1/2 banana, tsp of peanut butter, ice, & water. CHAD WHITE WOLF KOCH, Hinsdale

For Chad White Wolf Koch, it became apparent after working for eight years as an architect that he felt happier and healthier when he got out from behind his desk and moved around. He is now helping others do the same as the owner of White Wolf Academy which teaches Martial Arts, Yoga and Tai Chi with multiple park districts and communities including the Community House in Hinsdale and Yoga Among Friends in Downers Grove. “Health is comprised of four aspects: mental, emotional, physical and spiritual,” explains Chad. “I need all four of these to be present and healthy.” He feels Martial Arts, Yoga and Tai Chi bring all four together. He enjoys working with his students and athletes to show them good health isn’t always packaged in high-intensity workouts or competitions. Having a healthy diet and exercise plan is key. “Everyone trips over a crack in the sidewalk once in a while. As long as you continue walking instead of stopping to stare at the crack, it is not so difficult,” says Chad. Chad also advocates being a part of a group as a fantastic way to continue a health journey. “It is important to me that my classes become a community. We help each other, support each other and hold each other accountable.” He would love to see a trend to “reject the cultural bias on how we ‘should’ look. It is amazing how your health changes when you find the beauty and strength within yourself.” –Mindy Kyle FUN FITNESS FACTS What is your favorite workout routine or class? I really can’t choose, which is why I teach all three. I love the strong kicks in Tae Kwon Do and when I’m standing on my head or doing an arm balance in yoga, I feel on fire. What is your typical “start the day right” breakfast? I usually make a fruit smoothie in the morning to get me going. What is your favorite healthy snack? I really enjoy fruit as a snack. Bananas, strawberries and raspberries are my favorites. HRISTO HRISTOV,St. Charles

Hristo Hristov built his fitness and wellness coaching facility, Higher Level Fitness in St. Charles, around a list of core values including two of which he thinks are the most important for a coaching center – accountability and support. “We help our clients find their most important reason for becoming healthier,” says Hristo. “Then we support them directly in their exercise and nutrition planning each time they come in.” He explains that everyone has tough times, but if his coaches hold their clients accountable to their goals and desired end results, success tends to follow. Hristo also points out it is not enough to just want to lose a little weight or become healthier; to be successful, you need to find why you want those results. Perhaps you want to be a better role model to your children, or you want to excel at a sport. “The turning point for me was when I started wanting more meaning and purpose in my life,” he says. “The moment I started expecting excellence in myself is the moment I started focusing on nutrition, movement, emotions and the mind.” A longtime athlete, Hristo’s focus has shifted much more to preservation and longevity of the body. He believes life’s challenges are an opportunity to learn and grow stronger, and “if you love yourself a bit more daily – things will get better.” –Mindy Kyle FUN FITNESS FACTS What is your favorite workout routine or class? My favorite movements that help get a body strong, lean and healthy are deadlifts, pull-ups, squats, push-ups and kettlebell swings. What is your typical “start the day right” breakfast? Mostly raw veggies (green/red peppers, cucumbers, broccoli, etc.), 2-3 whole boiled eggs, some good quality cheese and turkey slices. What inspires you to keep up your healthy lifestyle? My vision. I envision the world a place where people are awakened and see the value and meaning of being healthy and fit. ELIZABETH GINDT, Montgomery

Elizabeth Gindt is a busy wife and mother of 2 teenagers who lives in Montgomery. She also owns Touchpoints to Tranquility, where she dedicates her time to helping others relax and detoxify. Before she opened her business Elizabeth was faced with life-changing news in November 2003 when she was diagnosed with MS. “At first I accepted my fate and just started taking any drug they’d give me…..within a couple of years I was taking 39 pills a day between supplements and prescriptions and that was my ah-ha moment. I was taking one drug for one thing and then 2 or 3 others to help with side effects and so on. I figured there had to be something more holistic that I could do, so I set out on a journey to research alternative treatments, etc. Soon after that I decided I wanted to help others feel as good as I did without the use of medications and other drugs,” she said. When it comes to her favorite aspect of helping others, Elizabeth says she loves to hear how clients are sleeping better, having fewer aches and pains, etc. “They all have different goals when they come to me for a treatment and when I help them reach whatever that goal is, there is nothing more satisfying than that,” she added. Elizabeth also finds time to continue her own healthy regimen. She enjoys working out, she loves massages, and gets facials and other pampering treatments regularly to help her feel her very best. Elizabeth is currently attending S.O.H.M.A.R in Downers Grove and expects to be a Licensed Massage Therapist by the spring of 2016. -Lindy Kleivo

FUN FITNESS FACTS What is your favorite healthy snack? Pretzels because I like the salt and when I eat them, it helps me get in a ton of water.

ALL THINGS FRESH IN THE NEW YEAR Shakou

312 W. Main Street, St. Charles

 Shakousushi.com (630)444-0850

Owners: Ed Hartigan, Adam Garvanian, Aleks & Chrissy Dupor Are you ready to start your New Year off right? Eat better and truly enjoy what you’re eating? You’ll want to try everything at Shakou in St. Charles! It’s a fresh new year so try fresh fish, sticky rice and seaweed to elevate your meal and your mood. Owners, Ed Hartigan, Adam Garvanian, Aleks and Chrissy Dupor have created a city caliber venue for modern Asian cuisine. From the refined venue, scintillating service to the creative cuisine at Shakou it’s all about the details. Their presentation is spectacular. Shakou is Japanese for social life which fits this eatery situated along St. Charles bustling Main Street. Whether you decided to sit at a table for two, booth full of friends or on a velvet settee you will enjoy the Shakou experience. We jumped right in with the refreshing tuna Tataki salad. The perfectly seared tuna sat among a bed of lettuce, baby arugula, cucumbers, tomato, avocado with sesame oil and ponzu citrus sauce. The traditional Wakame seaweed salad is always a must for me and this one did not disappoint. With so many choices on the menu we decided to ask our server, Lindsey, for recommendations. She had an extensive knowledge about everything on the menu. This makes Shakou an ideal location to try out anything new to your palette! Lindsey also informed us that you can always substitute soy paper or black rice for a different or healthier approach. Who knew that black rice has more antioxidants than a blueberry?! Black rice is also lower in carbs, calories and has more fiber than white or brown rice. We tried the black rice in the Black Widow roll. Lightly battered fresh water eel and avocado is wrapped in black rice and topped with a sautéed scallop, tobiko and unagi sauce. Each roll was a new mouthwatering experience. Then the sashimi came out. From the escolar, hamachi, hirame, toro and hon maguro the freshest exquisite fish lay before us. We savored each piece. Especially the hon maguro dusted with the gold flakes. Then came the entrees and we continued to be impressed. Melt in your mouth Sea Bass in a garlic soy sauce sautéed with vegetables and topped with baby arugula and yuzu wasabi. Another great option is the Yaki Udon with shrimp and scallops, sautéed vegetables on top of thick noodles in a light soy sauce. The Braised Short Ribs are marinated for a day and a half in ginger soy and truly are delectable. Whatever you venture to try at Shakou will definitely tantalize your taste buds. Your New Year resolution of eating healthier in 2016 just got a whole lot easier!

LET’S GET BUBBLY

It’s a brand new year and I always love kicking it off with bubbles – crisp, clean, and alive! Is there a better sound than popping open a bottle of some sparkling wine? It makes me giddy. No matter what region you prefer; sparkling wine from the states, Cava from Spain, Prosecco from Italy, or Champagne from France, it’s generally all good. Although I usually prefer mine from France, Champagne can get pricey. What’s nice though is that I can still get that French profile I like from other regions that are far less expensive. For instance, The Languedoc in Southern France is a great choice.

One of my favorites is the Cote Mas Cremant de Limoux Brut NV (that was a mouthful). It is artfully crafted with a blend of 60% Chardonnay, 20% Chenin, 10% Pinot Noir, and 10% Mauzac. It has alluring notes of citrus, honey, green apple, and peach and it finishes with just a hint of graphite. This bottle has great power and structure coupled with crisp bubbles, making for a delicious party in your glass!

Flaunting a price point of $15.99 for the quality of juice you’re getting, you can’t go wrong picking up a bottle. After enjoying a glass or two of this sparkling wine, I’m feeling rather bubbly myself! Happy New Year and Sláinte! Watermelon, Honeydew, Cantaloupe, Apples, Avocado, Celery, Cucumber, Zucchini, Summer Squash, etc. These are the healthy snacks we give our kids when they are asking for chips, candy, and soda. But for mother of three, Suzuka Hetterich, who prides herself on living a healthy and active lifestyle as a Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor at XSport Fitness and the Naperville and Plainfield YMCAs, these snacks can send her daughter, Claudia, straight to the E.R. “We discovered her allergy when we first introduced her to yogurt at nine months of age,” Suzuka shares. “Claudia has had three life threatening anaphylactic reactions to food allergens in her short 6 years of her life.” She is severely allergic to over 16 different food items, so Suzuka makes almost everything they eat from scratch to ensure no cross contamination or hidden allergens. “We are fortunate to be surrounded by wonderful friends and neighbors who never exclude our daughter because of her food allergy; however, public places like parks can be challenging when children are often allowed to eat and/or drink while they play.” Suzuka says, “Having your children simply wash their hands after snack/meal and/or before they leave a house, can possibly save a life of someone with food allergies.”

A PRO BONO STORY OF COMPASSION Two dentists -- Dr. Michael Scherer, D.D.S., M.D., and Dr. Katherine Borello, D.D.S. recently adopted a special case in their offices. It all began with a toothache and a desire to be able to smile again. A 31 year old west suburban resident could feel the holes that had developed in his remaining teeth. Not being able to stand either hot or cold food, the recovering drug addict hadn’t seen a dentist for more than ten years.

In April, he visited Dr. Borello’s office, hoping to get some relief from the pain. Realizing he needed a specialist, he was referred to Wheaton Oral Surgery & Implant Center. It was determined that the All-on-4 ® Dental treatment concept may be an option for him. The All-on-4 ® Dental Procedure is an alternative to traditional dentures, allowing a patient to come in and walk out with new teeth all in the same day. After several visits and communication with Hanna, he was a perfect candidate for the treatment; but he couldn’t afford the procedure.

The patient was nearing his one-year anniversary of being drug free, and he was still having difficulty finding employment. There was just something about his story that touched Jennifer Hockey, the Implant Treatment Coordinator at Wheaton Oral Surgery & Implant Center. “I meet many people from all walks of life and this story stirred something inside of me that I couldn’t ignore,” said Hockey.

Hockey has witnessed compassion from Dr. Scherer and his staff on countless occasions and that is what inspired her to do all that she could to help. Unsure of what the outcome would be, she talked with the manufacturer representative from Nobel Biocare, Mike Guinta, and to her surprise they had a pro bono program. Hockey also reached out to Artistic Dental Lab to see if they could offer financial assistance. The lab decided to participate, and their compassion started a snowball effect. In addition to Nobel Biocare and the Lab, Dr. Scherer and Dr. Borello all agreed to waive their fees. The exciting part of this amazing story was when Dr. Scherer was able to deliver the news to the patient and his family that they would not endure any costs for this procedure.

On October 2, this recovering addict had all his damaged teeth completely removed and they were replaced that same day with teeth supported by implants using this All-on-4 ® procedure. (See before and after pictures).

“I didn’t think I would ever be able to eat comfortably again, let alone have a new set of teeth that I could smile with,” remarked the patient. “I am over whelmed by the generosity and efforts to help me. I never thought I would be on the receiving end of such a blessing as this. There are still good people in the world, and Dr. Scherer and Dr. Borello and their staff are living proof of that!” Dr. Michael Scherer D.D.S., M.D. is a board certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon practicing since 2004. He practices the full scope of surgical procedures and manages a wide variety of problems relating to the mouth, teeth and facial regions. His practice Wheaton Oral Surgery and Implant Center is located at 2323 Naperville Road, Suite 160 in Naperville. Happy New Year to you and yours! All of us at Glancer Magazine are very excited for 2016 and all that is planned for each issue. As you turn the pages you will notice many new features along with changes to some exisiting features– including my Editor’s Note. In keeping with the core of our publication, which is celebrating the faces and places of our community, I will now be dedicating my monthly column to exciting happenings around the suburbs. Please join me in this month’s HIGH FIVE by visiting a mentioned business, congratulating a featured resident or sharing these good news stories with another member of the community. IN NAPERVILLE – High five to the developers and builders of the $93 million Water Street District under construction in Downtown Naperville. 40 high schoolers studying architecture, research and design at Naperville North got the chance to meet with them last month. The Mayor and City staff also attended before students donned hard hats to go onto the site to see the construction process up close. Very cool! IN HINSDALE – High five to Jenny Taylor, nationally renowned boudoir photographer, on the opening of her new studio in Hinsdale. Located at 13 East 1st Street, the new 3,000 sq. ft. space will be just as stunning and luxurious as Taylor’s original studio in Naperville. So happy for your growth and success! IN DOWNERS GROVE – High five to DuPage Medical Group for being recognized with a Three Year Accreditation with Commendation as a Freestanding Cancer Center from the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer (CoC). This level of accreditation is the CoC’s highest distinction for quality of care and ensures that DMG’s Integrated Oncology Program exceeds all standard requirements. DMG is the only accredited Freestanding Cancer Center in Illinois. We just love hearing such fabulous news! IN WHEATON – High five to Escape For Fun, Inc., the new hot spot in Wheaton that opened this month. Get ready for The Chamber, a medieval themed room, where up to 10 people are "locked -in" and must solve puzzles, riddles, codes and clues in order to find a series of keys and ultimately escape. The catch is that you only have 60 minutes to do it. This sounds like it would make for a great Team Glancer outing! IN NORTH AURORA – High Five to Moves Dance Studio on launching its new “MIGHTY MOVERS” Dance Program for individuals with disabilities and special needs. The first class is complimentary so if you’re a parent of a special needs child who loves to dance, come on out & see firsthand how great the instructor is. I actually enrolled my 5 year old daughter who has Down syndrome and she absolutely LOVES it! COUNT IT ALL JOY: LIFE'S LESSONS FROM A CHILD WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

 Kathleen Murray, PhD., Naperville

Her first published book is in honor of her son Christian, who has Down syndrome, autism and a congenital heart defect. Her goal is to motivate and encourage readers to seek a life of contentment and hope in the daily interactions with a person who has special needs. Launched in August 2015, the inspirational book is based on her testimony of actively seeking joy and beauty in the midst of challenging situations. “Raising a child with special needs heartens me to grow in personal fortitude, pursue family unity, and find true inner peace and gratitude daily,” said Kathleen. Available at WestBow Press, Amazon and Barnes and Noble. TIMOTHY TRAINOR: HEAD IN THE GAME

 Rob Johnson, Hinsdale

Published in October 2015, this is the first book for the CBS-2 News Anchor and Hinsdale dad who’s passion for writing it came from his love of hockey. “I am a huge hockey fan and have been a concussion awareness advocate for several years, so the opportunity to share this message with children was very important to me.” Timothy Trainor:Head in the Game combines fast-paced hockey action, great interaction with Timothy's family and friends, and an important message about concussions and playing the game the right way.

Rob is working on his next project, a second Timothy Trainor book that will be based on a different hockey experience, and will incorporate some important social messages for children. Available at Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, OutskirtsPress.com/bookstore, or A Book Above in

 Elmhurst. CALORIE ACCOUNTING

 Mandy Levy, Chicago/Burr Ridge

Five years ago Mandy designed her own weight loss plan and journaled about her experience daily. Before she knew it, she was skinny AND had a book’s worth of documentation, self-motivation, findings and tips– all written with an air of self-deprecation and irreverence: she’d created the only hilarious diet book ever!

Published in April 2015, Mandy’s book is much different than the others that are as interesting as a rice cake. This is the coffee table book of diet books! A technicolor dream: fun and funny, visual and vibrant, cool and creative. It’s perfect for LOLing those LBs away, keeping good on those New Year’s resolutions. In addition to hosting and performance projects, Mandy has a collection of humorous short stories cookin’ for book #2. Available in stores (Barnes & Noble), online (Amazon), or at www.calorieaccounting.com.
