ERRATIC DRIVING LEADS TO TRAGIC WEST SUBURBAN CRASH WEST CHICAGO–News was released today pertaining to a crash that occurred in August that injured a pregnant woman. DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Glen Ellyn Chief of Police Philip Norton announced today that bond has been set for a West Chicago man accused of causing an accident while intoxicated that seriously injured a pregnant woman. Steven Gayden, 28 (d.o.b. 12/29/1994) of the 29W400 block of Hawthorn Lane, appeared at a bond hearing this morning where Judge Daniel Guerin set bond at $300,000 with 10% to apply. Gayden is charged with one count of Aggravated DUI – Great Bodily Harm, a Class 4 Felony. On August 23, 2023, at approximately 11:14 a.m., officers with the Glen Ellyn Police Department responded to a vehicle crash with injuries at Roosevelt Road and Parkside Avenue. Upon their arrival, officers found Gayden standing outside his car, a Chevy Cruze which was on fire, and the victim, a woman who is four months pregnant, still in her car, a Mazda. The victim was immediately transported to a local hospital where she received treatment for a fractured ankle, pelvis and sternum. Gayden was transported to a local hospital as well for medical attention. Following an investigation into the crash, it is alleged that Gayden was driving erratically in and out of traffic and at one point used the center turn lane to pass other vehicles. It is further alleged that Gayden crashed into the victim’s vehicle as she was turning out of a grocery store parking lot. It is alleged that at the time of the crash Gayden was under the influence of alcohol. On September 14, 2023, Judge George Ford issued a $150,000 with 10% to apply arrest warrant for Gayden. He was arrested the same day at the DuPage County Jail where he was in custody on an unrelated matter. “While allegedly under the influence of alcohol, Mr. Gayden had no business operating a motor vehicle,” Berlin said. “Driving is a privilege, not a right, and it is alleged that Mr. Gayden not only abused that right by getting behind the wheel after he had been drinking, but in doing so, seriously injured a pregnant woman and put many other innocent motorists at risk. I urge everyone, if you have been drinking, call a friend for a ride or use a ride-sharing service. Do not make the mistake of believing you are alright to drive. You will be glad you did when you arrive safe at home and not in jail or worse. I thank the Glen Ellyn Police Department for their efforts in this case as well as the DuPage MERIT Major Crash Reconstruction Team for their work. I also thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Daniel Orescanin and Micheal Pingaj for their work in securing charges against Mr. Gayden." “The Glen Ellyn Police Department takes impaired driving very seriously,” Norton said. “We are grateful for the cooperation and support of State’s Attorney Bob Berlin and his team in bringing these charges against the defendant who injured an innocent motorist.” Gayden’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 22, 2023, for a status hearing in front of Judge Margaret O’Connell. Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of a defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. LEARN MORE

STATEMENT RELEASED BY ROBERT BERLIN DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced today that a male Naperville Central High School student has been sentenced to two years of probation and one hundred hours of community service for placing a racist ad on Craigslist offering for sale an African American student at the same high school. On September 1, 2021, the juvenile entered a plea of guilty to two counts of Felony Hate Crime and one count of Misdemeanor Disorderly Conduct in front of Judge Anthony Coco, who handed down today’s sentence. Additionally, Judge Coco also ordered that the juvenile undergo individual and/or family counseling as deemed necessary by the Juvenile Probation Department and submit a DNA sample to the State’s DNA database.
On November 14, 2019, the juvenile took a photograph of the victim while at school. The juvenile then posted an ad on Craigslist with the photograph of the victim accompanied with the caption “Slave for sale (Naperville)” followed by an offensive racial slur. On November 18, 2019, the Naperville Police Department became aware of the incident and began an investigation which led to the juvenile as the person who posted the ad.
“Hate crimes have no place in a civilized society and will not be tolerated, regardless of the accused’s age,” Berlin said. “Studies show that the victims of hate crimes can suffer from depression, increased anxiety, low self-esteem and insecurity among other things. Everyone deserves the right to feel safe and welcome in our communities and my office will continue to charge and prosecute anyone, regardless of age, who engages in this type of behavior. It is my sincerest hope that with the help of our Juvenile Probation Department, the juvenile involved in this incident will mature into a productive member of society. I thank the Naperville Police Department as well as authorities at Naperville Central High School for their assistance in this case. I also thank Assistant State’s Attorney Lynn Cavallo for her work in holding this juvenile responsible for his actions.” CIVIC NEWS NAPERVILLE DUPAGE

FORTY-ONE YEAR OLD TROY YOUNG WAS PROUNOUNCED DECEASED AT THE SCENE LOMBARD–DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Roy Newton announced today that bond has been set for a Chicago man accused of killing a bicyclist with his car and then fleeing the scene of the crash. Norris Watt, 25 (d.o.b. 9/5/1995) of the 4900 Block of W. Polk Street, appeared at a bond hearing this morning where Judge George Bakalis set bond at $250,000 with 10% to apply. Watt has been charged with one count of Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Accident (Class 1 Felony) and one count of Aggravated DUI (Class 2 Felony). The State had asked for a bond of $2 million with 10% to apply.

On November 15 at approximately 11:04 p.m., officers with the Lombard Police Department were dispatched to the area of Roosevelt Road and Stewart Avenue regarding a pedestrian that was struck by a vehicle. Upon their arrival, officers found the victim, forty-one-year-old Troy Young on his back, near the northeast corner of Roosevelt Road and Stewart Avenue. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. Officers further observed a deformed bicycle laying in the right lane of westbound Roosevelt Road. It is alleged that prior to the 9-1-1- call, Watt was driving his vehicle westbound on Roosevelt Road near Stewart Avenue in excess of eighty mph when he hit Young with his vehicle. It is further alleged that after hitting Young, Watt failed to stop and drove away. At approximately 11:26 p.m., Oak Brook police officers reported they had stopped the vehicle suspected to be involved in the crash. Watt, who was allegedly driving the vehicle, was taken into custody at this time. Following an investigation into the crash, it is alleged that he had a combination of alcohol, ecstasy, amphetamine and cannabis in his system at the time of the crash.
“As I have said many times in the past, this case, like all alleged DUI cases, was 100% avoidable,” Berlin said. “With so many mind-altering substances allegedly in his system at the time of the crash, there is absolutely no reason why Mr. Watt should have been behind the wheel of a car that night. What I find particularly disturbing are the allegations that instead of rendering aid to his victim, Mr. Watt fled the scene, leaving a dying man behind. Thanks to the outstanding work of the Lombard and Oak Brook Police Departments however, Mr. Watt was taken into custody within minutes. I offer my sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Young as they grieve this tragic loss. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Jim Scaliatine and Sara Henley for their work in securing a strong prosecution against Mr. Watt.”

“I would like to express my sympathies to Mr. Young’s family on their loss,” Newton said. “Thanks to the cooperative efforts of the Lombard and Oak Brook Police Departments the alleged offender is now in custody. I would like to thank the MERIT Action Reconstruction Team for their work on this case as well as the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office for their legal assistance and filing the appropriate charges in this matter.”

Watt’s next court appearance is scheduled for December 4, 2020, for arraignment in front of Judge Bakalis.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. PLANS ALSO CALL FOR IMPROVEMENTS TO ST. JAMES FARM PICNIC PAVILION The DuPage Forest Preserve District is moving forward with plans to build a 0.5-mile limestone trail along Mack Road to connect the St. James Farm Forest Preserve trail system to county trails along Winfield Road and a future trail at Cantigny.
The 10-foot-wide trail will include an equestrian trailhead with rest area and overlook. Construction will begin in August and is expected to be complete by November 2020, according to Forest Preserve District Planning manager Kevin Horsfall.
The $300,000 project will be paid in part by a $200,000 Recreational Trails Program grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The remainder will be covered with funds from the St. James Farm endowment, Horsfall said.
The trail will run along the south side of Mack Road through a former agricultural field that the Forest Preserve District is restoring to prairie. It will connect to the preserve’s main loop trail, an existing service drive and carriage walks along Winfield Road. It will be the last major trail segment north of Butterfield Road in St.James Farm’s master plan.
Also at St. James Farm, work will begin in September on the 4,300-square-foot picnic pavilion, one of the District’s most-reserved shelters.
Plans call for replacing the cedar shake roof with asphalt shingles; repairing posts and foundations to stabilize the structure; connecting both sides of the pavilion with a covered roof; adding a grill patio to the south shelter; and providing benches and artificial turf game courts.
The entire floor of the shelter and the outer plaza space will be replaced to meet accessibility guidelines and increase capacity for larger groups.
The project, which will finish by November 2021, received a $150,000 matching grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development program. The District has allocated $155,000 toward this project.
The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County has been connecting people to nature for more than 100 years. More than 4 million people visit its 60+ forest preserves,166 miles of trails, six education centers and scores of programs each year. For information, call 630-933-7200 or visit dupageforest.org , where you can also link to the District’s e-newsletter , blog , Facebook , Twitter and Instagram pages.

AS PROTESTS CONTINUE, PEACE IS ENCOURAGED On Thursday, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin reiterated his support for peaceful protests in DuPage County but warned that law enforcement throughout the County will continue to be on the lookout for those who would take advantage of the protests to commit crimes.

“The First Amendment, which guarantees freedom of speech, press, religion and the people’s right to assemble and petition their government, is sacred to our democracy and for the past two-hundred-twenty-nine-years has protected the basic freedoms and rights of all United States citizens.” Berlin said. “Throughout DuPage County, law enforcement stands together to support and protect the First Amendment. We also stand together in protecting our residents from those who would pervert our right to assemble to commit criminal activity.” Photo Credit: Karen Toner, Balboa's Cheesesteaks 15 individuals have been arrested and charged since June 1, 2020, for crimes allegedly committed under the guise of peaceful protesting ranging from Possession of an Incendiary Device, Attempted Terrorism, Burglary and Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle. “The charges filed against these individuals sends the message that in DuPage County we will not tolerate any attempt to utilize a legitimate protest as a cover to commit any type of criminal behavior and anyone suspected of such activity will be caught, arrested and vigorously prosecuted,” Berlin continued. “I commend law enforcement throughout the County for their truly outstanding, cooperative efforts in simultaneously protecting our right to peacefully assemble while at the same time keeping a vigilant eye out for those seeking to commit crimes against our residents, businesses and communities.” A peaceful protest was held in Downtown Naperville on Thursday, concluding at 5:30pm. It was recorded LIVE by Napevrille's NCTV Some protesters remained in the downtown area following the conclusion of the event, chanting 'Take a Knee' where there was a large police presence. As community protests continue throughout the weekend, there will be a high police presence in all communities in the event of criminal activity following the peaceful, organized events.
