by Brianna Bartemeyer A HEARTWARMING STORY ABOUT A LIFE SAVING NEIGHBOR Did you know that 52% of young adults currently live with their parents? This number has been steadily rising since the 1960s. One of the resulting benefits of this trend is watching neighborhood kids become adults. That has certainly been the case for Steve and Kathy Kalkofen, as they’ve watched Michelle To grow into a caring, wonderful young woman. Since 2002, the To and Kalkofen families have enjoyed many shared memories in Naperville. With five children between the two households, there were countless birthday celebrations, sleepovers, pool parties, trick-or-treat adventures and school events. This past spring, Michelle returned home after completing her Doctorate of Pharmacy from the University of Rhode Island. While a blessing for Michelle’s family, it proved to be a blessing for the Kalkofens too. On May 2, 2020, Steve and Kathy Kalkofen were outside enjoying a beautiful night by the fire. Abruptly, it became apparent that Steve was in medical distress. Michelle, her boyfriend and younger sister were in their backyard enjoying a bonfire as well, when they heard Kathy yell for 911. Without pause, they hopped a 6-foot fence and rushed to assist. Michelle knew CPR and immediately began chest compressions until the paramedics arrived. It was later discovered that Steve suffered from Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Due to the kindness and swift-decision-making from EMTs, police/fire departments, doctors, nurses and Michelle, Steve survived. It’s true, 2020 has not been what any of us have wanted - but, it has been a reminder to be grateful for what we have. Grateful for family, for our health ... and for the best neighbors ever! by Brianna Bartemeyer MEET THE LOID, LOID-RICHERT & SCIABICA FAMILIES NAPERVILLE–Call it ‘The Crosstown Classic’, ‘The Windy City Showdown’ or ‘The North-South Showdown’. These catch phrases are synonymous with the highly anticipated Chicago Cubs-White Sox rivalry series … and bragging rights for the rest of the year. Chicago is just one of four lucky cities in the U.S. to have two MLB teams. Unfortunately, team loyalty is not understood by many - often adding strain to relationships. The Loid, Loid-Richert and Sciabica families are defying the odds! In 2005, The Sciabicas moved into their new home in Naperville. Excited to raise their three children and meet new neighbors, they proudly hung their Cubs’ flag. Little did they know, the neighbors (Loids/Loid-Richerts) were die-hard White Sox fans. This friendly rivalry soon led to backyard watch parties and road trips. Over the years, they’ve opened their homes (and yards!) to Sunday Fundays - bring on the mimosas and muffins! And we can’t forget to give Ryan Richert’s infamous ‘Mickey waffles’ a shout out! During our close-to-intolerable winter months (ie: ‘The Polar Vortex’), Joe Sciabica and Ryan Richert started the Suburban Bourbon & Cigar Club - they kindly allow Don Loid to partake with his beloved Bud Light. These neighbors continue to find ways to celebrate life together - if it’s not Sunday Fundays, it’s weekend movie nights, casino nights, vacations, birthdays and weddings. As baseball legend Yogi Berra once said, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” Even through differences (ahem - rivalries!), we hope you too find friendships that turn into family.
