OAK PARK–Ernest Hemingway's Birthplace Museum is nestled just west of downtown Chicago in Oak Park, Illinois. This is the ideal place to begin exploring the roots of the author's life and work. It is here that Ernest Hemingway was born in a second floor bedroom on July 21, 1899. This Queen Anne home was built in 1890 by his maternal grandparents and was the first home in Oak Park to have electricity. The famed Pulitzer Prize winning author spent the first six years of his life at what is now 339 N. Oak Park Ave. The restoration, which began in 1992, authentically returned the house to its 1890s’ Victorian heritage; ensuring that your experience of the furnishings and stories told reflect the young man who lived there.

Residents enjoy visiting here year after year, and this is how the Museum is able to remain open. Unlike many larger museums, the foundation that operates the birthplace home does not have a significant endowment or reserve fund.  Almost all of the modest monthly costs for the operations of the Hemingway Birthplace are generated through annual tour admissions, supplemented by the contributions of donors and members, as well as the efforts of our volunteer tour guides.

A GoFundMe page has bee launched to help keep the Hemingway House open. The Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park website reads:

"The very survival of the Hemingway Birthplace is threatened by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic due to the precipitous reduction in visitor revenues. We need your help to keep the doors open, please click HELP KEEP OUR DOORS OPEN button above to learn more and how you can donate."
