PARK BOARD NAMES BASEBALL FIELD AT KNOCH PARK "MEMORIAL FIELD"

Board passes resolution at April 9 meeting

A youth baseball field at Knoch Park, formerly known as Field #5, has been renamed “Memorial Field” to remember local residents who were members of the baseball community as player, coach, volunteer or parent. The Naperville Park District board of commissioners voted to pass Resolution 20-03 in support of the renaming at the April 9, 2020 meeting.

The idea to designate Field #5 as Memorial Field came from residents who first approached the board in late 2019. The board discussed the request at their January 30, 2020 meeting, and asked staff to draft a naming resolution. At the February 13 meeting, the board voted to ratify the action taken on January 30 that initiated a 60-day waiting period, prior to a final vote on the resolution at the April 9 meeting, per board policy.

In addition to requesting the naming of the field, residents spoke to the board about an initiative in collaboration with Naperville Little League to raise funds to replace the field’s scoreboard. At this time, the funds have been raised to purchase a new scoreboard, which will be dedicated to Justin Wegner, a Naperville baseball player who lost his battle with cancer.

In addition to the field naming and scoreboard replacement, the District will add Memorial Field to the District’s Remembrance Program, providing community members the opportunity to purchase a home plate-shaped memorial plaque to be placed on the press box located at the field.
