GLEN ELLYN | Bond Set at $ 150,000 for Chicago Man Charged with Strangling Ex-Girlfriend

DEFENDANT ALSO FACES ACTIVE KANE COUNTY WARRANT FOR ALLEGEDLY BEATING SAME VICTIM

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Glen Ellyn Chief of Police Philip Norton announced today that bond has been set for a Chicago man accused of beating and strangling his ex-girlfriend who is the mother of his daughter. Marvin Johnson, 22 (d.o.b. 9/26/1997) of 1435 S. Hamlin, appeared in Bond Court this morning where Judge George Bakalis set bond at $150,000 with 10% to apply. He has been charged with one count of Aggravated Battery (Class 2 Felony) and multiple Misdemeanor counts including two counts of Domestic Battery.

On May 27, 2020 at approximately 9:44 p.m., Glen Ellyn police responded to a 9-1-1 call at the victim’s home in Glen Ellyn for a report of a physical altercation. Upon their arrival, officers found the victim badly beaten with scratches around her neck and bite marks on her nose. It is alleged that Johnson went to the victim’s home to meet his daughter. It is alleged that an argument ensued between Johnson and the woman which eventually turned physical. It is further alleged that Johnson threw the woman to the ground and then began choking her. It is alleged that the woman freed herself from Johnson and attempted to call 9-1-1 when Johnson took the phone from her and then slammed her head into the refrigerator/freezer, ripping hair from the victim’s head.

It is alleged that Johnson then forced the woman to the ground a second time where he put his forearm to her neck causing the woman to go limp, nearly losing consciousness. It is further alleged that Johnson then spit on the woman,bit her nose and released her. It is alleged that Johnson then left the home via Lyft. It is further alleged that after calling Lyft, Johnson poured soda on the phone in an attempt to disable it. After Johnson allegedly left the home, the woman called the police using the same phone which was still functioning. A short time later, a patrol officer stopped the Lyft at which time Johnson allegedly fled the vehicle and was tackled by the officer.

“The allegations that Mr. Johnson strangled, beat and bit the mother of his daughter are extremely disturbing and will be met with the full force and effect of the law,” Berlin said. “I would like to thank the Glen Ellyn Police Department for their attentiveness in apprehending the defendant in this case. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorney Bridget Carlson for her efforts in this case.”

“We appreciate the swift action taken by our officers and the State’s Attorney’s Office in securing charges against this defendant,” Norton said.

Johnson’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 22, 2020 for arraignment in front of Judge Jeffrey MacKay. Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendants’ guilt. The defendants are presumed innocent and are entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove their guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
