ARTIST OF THE WEEK | Joseph Gagnepain of St. Charles

WELL KNOWN IN THE AREA FOR HIS BRILLIANT WORK

You need only to stroll down the St. Charles Riverwalk to view FoxCycle, one of Joseph Gagnepain’s unique sculptures which was purchased and installed in 2002. Among other major accomplishments, Joseph includes becoming “The Batavia Artist” by creating a large public mural depicting much of the city of Batavia in 2009 and being a founding member of Water Street Studios.

His skills encompass a myriad of mediums including metal, sand, snow, paint, mural, clothing, ice and wood. “I love discovering synchronicities and where things fit together and share a poetry from different backgrounds,” says Joseph.

Joseph started drawing at the age of three when his childhood doctor taught him how to draw Mickey Mouse and inspired him to go into cartooning. He graduated from the Chicago Academy for the Arts and spent two years at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Along with creating his many acclaimed and commissioned art works, Joseph is part of a carving team, “The Starvin’ Carvists” that have won 1st and 2nd place at 2 International Snow Sculpting Competitions in Italy. Currently, his art design has been turned into the first limited edition facemask being sold through the Batavia Arts Council as part of their Art on Your Face Festival 2020.
