SAVORY & SWEET SISTERS | Woody's Orchard

FALL FAVORITES As the chill returns to the air it brings with it many fall favorites. Pumpkin spice, pumpkin patches, cozy sweaters with boots and of course all things apple. We ventured out to Plano in Kendall County to a new apple orchard. Doug and Laura Nelson opened Woody’s Orchard last fall.

Laura shared with us that the idea arose after her father-in-law bought a train for his Grandkids. Deciding that an apple orchard was a perfect place to share and enjoy a ride on the train, they went to work. From that day on Laura and her husband Doug researched everything they could on apples.

Laura took us on a tour of their high-density orchard and we learned about all of the growth since last year, along with their future plans. Her apple tree knowledge and passion were evident as we sampled apples right off the tree. Our favorite is the Kindercrisp which is a smaller version of the Honeycrisp. Both sharing the tart, yet sweet flavor and crisp texture. The Kindercrisp is a perfect size to eat on the go or for school lunches. The Ruby Mae variety is a beautiful apple that rivals that of Snow White’s apple. It has a sweeter flavor and has a texture similar to a Red Delicious. The orchard offers twenty varieties for picking or purchasing in their store.

It wouldn’t be fall without an apple cider donut, or two or three. Get there early as they make them fresh every morning at 8am and by the afternoon they are gone! The iced blueberry donut is just as delicious and offers that comfort you get from a warm blueberry muffin. The buttery caramel apples are a perfect mix of salty and sweet when dipped in nuts. Hungry for a bigger bite? Try the pulled pork sandwich paired with an apple cider slushy.

Woody’s Orchard is open Wednesday through Sunday 10am-6pm. They have a pumpkin patch, hay rack and a unique kids play area. This Fall take a drive out to the country, sip on some hot or cold cider while enjoying the crisp air. Just make sure to grab an apple cider donut!
