LITERARY LOCALS | Michelle Schaub of Downers Grove

MICHELLE SCHAUB Fresh-Picked Poetry: A Day at the Farmers’ Market DOWNERS GROVE–Michelle Schaub, a middle school language arts teacher at Avery Coonley School in Downers Grove, started creating children’s books before she could even write. Her grandfather used to help her “publish” these books by cutting, folding and stapling sheets of paper together. She then would draw pictures and dictate words for her grandfather to record. In college, a fellow creative writing student pointed out that Michelle’s main characters were always children, and the idea to write and publish children’s books began to grow.

Michelle’s first children’s book, Fresh-Picked Poetry: A Day at the Farmers’ Market, is a picture book poetry collection. The book’s eighteen poems follow the adventures of two new friends and their canine companions as they discover how much fun there is at the local farmers’ market. “One day, I was at the Green City Market in Chicago with my children,” explains Michelle. “I thought about how much exploring a farmers’ market is like going on a treasure hunt. This idea is at the heart of all the poems I wrote for this collection.”

Fresh-Picked Poetry: A Day at the Farmers’ Market is available at Anderson’s Bookshops and online at Amazon and Barnes and Noble. -Mindy Kyle
