RESIDENT FEATURE | Meet Nukes Vomica, #99

AKA NINA LENNON OF THE AURORA 88s ROLLER DERBY TEAM A frenzy of fierce femmes has found its new home at the Aurora Skate Center, bringing with it the excitement of women’s flat track roller derby.

This full contact sport combines speed, agility, and the promise of plenty of full-force crashes. The Aurora 88s offer up derby action outside of the big city, but this feisty group isn’t just a bunch of pretty faces on wheels.

We were able to catch up with one of the skaters recently–west suburban resident, Nina Lennon whose league name is Nukes Vomica #99. We think you’ll enjoy getting to know her just as much as we have.

What Led to Your Involvement in Aurora 88s?

I was in search of a sports activity for adults that was competitive, demanding and preferably group oriented. I saw a movie about roller derby and my curiosity was piqued. I soon found the 88s and was hooked!

Explain a Day in the Life of a Roller Derby Girl?

Hmm. My daily life focus is on other things than being feminine and playing derby, truthfully. Roller derby is a refuge from the often harsh demands of being owner & operator of a business.

What is the Most Challenging Part of Being on the Team?

The most challenging thing is honoring my personal training and athletic goals in order to perform better for my team!

In 3 Words How Would a Spectator Describe the Aurora 88s? Some badass b**ches!

How Often Do You Practice with the Team?

2-3 times per week and I train 2-3 times personally outside of practice to build strength and endurance.

What is the Most Rewarding Aspect to Being a Roller Derby Girl in Your Own Words?

For me, it's two aspects. First, the demands of learning and playing roller derby over an extended period have shown me a lot about who I am, which gives me a confidence I apply in my whole life. The second aspect is personal support. My league mates have become a family to me, so there is always a place I can go when I need support. Nothing like it.

All skaters, refs, and officials volunteer their time to the skater owned and operated organization with a mission to empower women through athleticism, and create an environment of respect to promote skill, confidence, and fun. The league is committed to giving back to the community through volunteering their time and making charitable contributions.

Aurora 88s Season Opener is June 17 at the Aurora Skate Center. Doors open at 5pm. The whistle blows at 6pm. The cost of $12 per person, kids 12 and under are FREE. Come on out and support your local Roller Derby team by cheering the girls on. Tickets can be purchased online. Follow the team on facebook @Aurora88s.
