LITERARY LOCAL | J.K. Egerton of Glen Ellyn

J.K. EGERTON, GLEN ELLYN

Business on the Board How the World’s Greatest Game Can Build Better Leaders Jim Egerton learned how to play chess when he was in grade school, started the chess club when he hit high school and became State Champion in his first high school tournament. The rest, he says, is history.

A long-time resident of Glen Ellyn, Jim has taught chess in many locations including many schools and the Naperville Park District. Starting out his career as a math teacher and then spending 23 years in corporate training management and information technology, he has found his skills at playing chess have helped him advance his career in both teaching and business. “Many of the strategies and tactics used in both are the same and knowing how they relate can accelerate your success,” explains Jim. “You can improve your strategic thinking and decision-making skills using one of the oldest and most popular games in the world.”

He knew he needed to share his story and his experience with the business world, so he wrote the book, Business on the Board: How the World’s Greatest Game Can Build Better Leaders and developed a corporate training and talent development company alongside it.

Jim believes you can develop a leader’s mindset by using the chess method of decision-making. Instead of business cases, he packed the book with thought-provoking lessons from various chess games and tournaments that address topics such as leadership, employee development, financial investing and risk management. “I guide you to be strategically stronger and tactically sharper so that you are better prepared to win at the game of business,” says Jim.

The book was published though Crescendo Publishers last fall and can be found through Amazon Createspace, Kindle online and in local book stores in Glen Ellyn, Naperville, and Downers Grove. Jim is also available for speaking engagements and training. –Mindy Kyle
