SAVORY & SWEET SISTERS | Fire + Wine, Glen Ellyn

October 2016 – MAKING FOOD FUN IN GLEN ELLYN!

We immediately felt welcomed seated under a sign that read “families forever” and greeted with a smile by our server adorned in a shirt that read, “We make food fun for you!” Located on Main St. in the heart of Glen Ellyn Fire + Wine is a casual Italian treasure. The ambiance created by father and son duo Michael and Anthony Vai is warm and friendly, mingling with customers as though they were hosting a family dinner. We could overhear them sharing family stories and laughter. Their fervency can be felt in every aspect of Fire + Wine. Even the staff could be seen laughing with each other and exchanging smiles.

Our server Meghan McNellis was knowledgeable about the small plates, creative fresh pastas, wood-fired pizzas, global wine list, fresh cocktails and craft beer.

Shareable is how we can best describe the menu. Sharing and conversing while enjoying the delectable dishes. The cocktail of the day was the breezy afternoon which was a refreshing mix of gin, house made sour, orange bitters and St. Germaine. Cocktails are made with fresh juices and house made ingredients. The Ricotta and Honeycomb takes toast topped with whipped ricotta and wildflower honeycomb and makes for a savory and sweet bite. The Asiago Stuffed Gnocchi is fresh potato gnocchi with pecorino, garlic, shallots and chili flakes that add a bit of pizzazz.

A popular item on the menu is the sliders with large flavorful meatballs, roasted tomato sauce and topped with arugula then add the house made hot pepper mix if you like a little heat. Next up was the Pancetta and Arugula wood-fired pizza. The perfectly fired crust topped with crispy Italian style bacon, roasted tomato, fresh mozzarella, and garlic was delicious. Bring the whole family because the children’s menu has fantastic choices that include grilled salmon, filet mignon, create your own pasta and pizza!

We ended with an array of sweet treats but our two favorites were the creamy Butterscotch Budino and the Flourless Chocolate Cake topped with a fresh berry compote and vanilla bean gelato. A quote on the wall by Julia Child states, “People who love to eat are the best people!” You will definitely love to eat here!
