Q. My son seems distracted and has trouble paying attention in school and on his homework. Is there anything that I can do to improve his attention?

Symptoms and behaviors of poor attention? Inability to stay on task, bouncing from idea to idea, making sloppy mistakes, turning in incomplete work, not turning in assignments at all, impulsiveness, spelling problems (including forgetting words after mastering them, struggles to follow instructions, poor organization skills, forgetfulness, avoiding prolonged mental effort, dislike or disinterest in school.

Types of attention: Sustained – The amount of time we can stay focused on a task. Selective – The ability to remain focused and on task while being subjected to sensory input. Divided – Attending to two things at once. How to improve attention: Time how long he can stay on task and challenge him to increase the time. Get Exercise, physical activity helps to maintain focus and 1 hour of exercise provides 4 hours of focus. Fish Oil supplements- great for overall brain health. Improving cognitive skills by training attention skills. Leave distractions during homework time to train him to focus better.
