DECOR & MORE | At Home Spring 2015

Spring is just around the corner and with it comes the need for home décor and fun finds to decorate your favorite rooms in your home. Luckily, in the western suburbs, there are plenty of places where you can find the hottest spring trends that will help you fancy up your family room, perfect your powder room, and turn up the heat in your kitchen décor.

Let’s start with the hot spring trends for the kitchen. Susan, a top designer at the Kitchen Studio, is noticing an uptick in overall remodeling activity. Clients are starting to move away from detail cabinetry and focus more on textural details of that particular space. “Think wood tops, larger pattern tile backsplashes, blocks of color or texture used throughout the kitchen space,” she adds.

Along with the use of texture, the Kitchen Studio is also seeing some changes with what were once a staple, granite countertops. “Granite countertops are still very popular; many people want a unique look for their kitchen, making it more of a personal space just for them,” Susan says. “You’ll see more honed granites, quartz tops (Cambria, Caesarstone, and Silestone, for example), and quartzite, which is a very unique natural stone.” You can personalize your kitchen even more with fun accessories. Try Little Luxuries, 212 South Main St. in Naperville, and check out their antique kitchen accessories to add some pop and texture to your kitchen.

For your foyer, family room, and powder room, Nona Jo’s in Naperville is seeing that home décor styles are more standard. “A majority of our clients have a defined traditional feel,” Nona Jo’s says. “To mix things up we recommend adding transitional/contemporary colors and accessories, creating an eclectic/updated blend to that traditional style.”

Hot trends include metallic inspiration for accessories through the home . . . “finally all metals are hot!” Nona Jo’s exudes. Metallic wall paper in the powder room is a great way to glam it up. A quick foyer facelift could be as simple as updating paint colors on the wall and you can rotate accessories in your family room space by updating your lampshade. “Reclaimed deconstructed painted looks are very popular right now, giving you that eclectic mix,” adds Nona Jo’s. “Matchy-matchy is out, mixing all textures, colors and styles is in for 2015.”

In the master bedroom, blue is a popular color for the walls, bedding, and accessories. But don’t lose focus on this one important master bedroom element…lighting. Antique and vintage fixtures can suit a variety of bedroom designs and decorating schemes. Check out Lofty Lighting in Downers Grove, www.loftylighting.com, for incredible lighting finds.

For the master bath, clean, crisp, upscale looks are hot for this coming spring. Rosie Millen, senior designer at Heritage Home Décor & Design in Yorkville, has some expert advice on what to incorporate this spring in master bath décor. “Inset cabinetry is on the rise, along with Cambria quartz countertops,” she says. “You can also add accent pieces; for example, Kohler Artifacts fixtures are popular right now, allowing homeowners to mix and match faucets and handles, giving a unique, custom look.”

Splashes of wall color are also making their mark throughout the house. Coral Reef is the 2015 trending color and can be a stand-alone color, used as a single accent wall for example, or it can be paired with complementary colors, giving it a cheerful approach to your bathroom design, family room, or even your mud room. Check out Dream Works Painting (www.dreamworkspainting.com) in Elgin to help you with your painting needs.

So what do you do with all the other rooms of the house and the hidden spaces? Take a look around your home and see what elements and spaces have been neglected. Handles, drawer pulls, and knobs can be painted or even replaced with something more colorful or vibrant. Trim can be updated and repainted; it doesn’t always have to be white.

Accessories are great additions to any room in the home. Adding a carefully placed accessory with a splash of color or texture is sometimes just what you need to inject more character and life in any corner of any room. Take a walk through 610 Home in Geneva (610 South First St.) and check out their many accessories and home décor items.

Benches and cubbies are another sizzling home décor trend for spring 2015. Add a bench in your mudroom for better organization or stackable cubbies in your family room. Want a customized closet or an infusion of ideas to better organize your home? Give the pros at Custom Closets, Inc., in Downers Grove a call to see if they can help you: (630) 724-1121.

There you have it! From sizzling metallic inspirations, to eclectic accessories and fixtures, to splashes of coral reef color, these hot trends for spring of 2015 are sure to infuse every corner of every room of your home.
