HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK....

LAST FLING TO HOST COLLECTIVE SOUL LABOR DAY WEEKEND
The Naperville Jaycees are happy to announce Collective Soul will perform at 8 p.m. on the Rotary Hill Main Stage at the Last Fling, Saturday, Sept. 4 this Labor Day weekend.
“We are so excited to have Collective Soul play Rotary Hill this year,” said Mike Kreger, Last Fling co-executive director. “They love playing in Naperville and every time we’ve seen them it’s been an amazing, rockin’ good time.”
Collective Soul gained a special place in the hearts of music lovers in 1993 with the rock anthem “Shine.” Having made music for nearly two decades now, the multi-platinum band has a catalog of number one hit singles, including “December”, “The World I Know” and “Heavy”.
The band released their 8th and second self-titled album in 2009, which includes the radio smash hit “Staring Down”. While it would have been easy for the members to rest on their laurels, the excitement they felt for their newest album was palpable.
“Everybody just really took a big step, dug in and worked together as a band. It was really nice,” said lead vocalist Ed Roland.
Averaging 250 shows a year, 7th Heaven, whose singer Keith Semple won the U.K. version of American Idol, will open for Collective Soul at 6 p.m. The Josh Holmes featuring his full band will start the show at 4 p.m.
Main Stage tickets are $15 each night, excluding the free concert on Monday at 2 p.m. to honor military and their families.
For more information on the Last Fling’s weekend events, concert tickets, sponsorship and volunteer opportunities visit our website at www.LastFling.org.

SPECIAL 50TH ANNIVERSARY IN TOWN

Glen Ellyn Bookstore Celebrated 50th Anniversary

The Bookstore in Glen Ellyn held a 50th Anniversary celebration on Thursday, August 19. The event featured free cake and prizes to thank the community for its support throughout the years. In addition to the 50 year celebration, The Bookstore recognized the 25 year commitment of its current owner, Jane Stroh, and celebrated the success of its 50 Hour Reading Marathon held in June for the benefit of the Glen Ellyn Children's Resource Center.

Bookstore History
The Bookstore was founded by Vic and Rosamond Du Jardin prior to 1960, but moved to its current storefront at 475 N. Main Street in Glen Ellyn in 1960. The old brick building dates back to 1892, and was originally home to McChesney's General Store. Rosamond Du Jardin was the author of teen fiction set in the malt shop era, including such titles as Senior Prom, Boy Trouble and Double Date. Vic Du Jardin was an avid reader who often read books while working behind the cash register.

Jack and Marguerite Rice purchased The Bookstore from the Du Jardins in 1973. The south half of the store was made into a record shop, and The Bookstore was limited to the north half. According to their son David Rice, "my parents named it 'The Book Store - M. Rice - Prop. 1973' in order to hearken back to the small town stores they had known in their youth."

In 1987, Marguerite Rice was ready to retire and sold the Book Store to Barb and Dwight Reed, who owned it until 1997. Barb Reed was once a school librarian at Forest Glen Elementary School in Glen Ellyn. In 1997, the Reeds retired to operate another independent bookstore in Frankfort, Michigan. Jane Stroh had been an employee of the bookstore since 1985, and in 1997, she and her husband Tim purchased it from the Reeds.

Survival Story
According to Jane Stroh, the reason The Bookstore has survived for so long is because of its loyal customers: "Glen Ellyn is very loyal to us. In turn, we strive to be an intregal member of the community. We employ passionate readers who have strong ties to the community, and the camaraderie that we have with our customers is hard to beat."

This might be the reason that The Bookstore has survived the challenging economic conditions for small independent bookstores. It has a long tradition of hosting children's book parties and now hosts monthly author appearances and literary events in the store. It supports area book clubs with its annual Book Club Wine and Cheese Night, and has an annual Summer Reading Program for both children and adults. Every holiday season it has a charitable gift book program for the children associated with Bridge Communities, and it donates many "Breakfast at the Bookstore" private book reviews to local fundraisers. Bookstore employees volunteer their time giving book reviews to local retirement homes and civic organizations. The Bookstore also donated 10% of the profits it made from the 1st Annual Downtown Glen Ellyn Bookfest to the Glen Ellyn Public Library.

50th Anniversary Events
In recognition of its 50th Anniversary, The Bookstore was one of the main sponsors of the First Annual Downtown Glen Ellyn Bookfest held on June 19, 2010. The Bookstore organized unique and successful literary events by partnering with other members of the Downtown Alliance and the Glen Ellyn Public Library. In addition, throughout the entire year, The Bookstore has held a monthy raffle for a $50 gift certificate available to all customers who spend over $50. This year the Downtown Alliance honored The Bookstore's 50th Anniversary by choosing a book-related theme for the annual summer scavenger hunt.

50 Hour Team Readathon
Jane Stroh came up with the idea of a 50 Hour Readathon to celebrate the Bookstore's 50th Anniversary. The Bookstore decided to partner with the Glen Ellyn Children's Resource Center, a not-for-profit organization that provides tutoring and support services to children in poverty in Glen Ellyn. Area readers formed teams to read a total of 50 hours over one weekend in June, raising pledges for the Resource Center. Teams of avid readers sign up for the event, including a team of Glen Ellyn Village Trustees, a team from the Glen Ellyn Public Library, a team representing the Resource Center, as well as teams of Glen Ellyn families. The Readathon raised over $3,500, and there are plans for another event next summer.

One of the teams led by Bookstore customer Dee Netzel and her daughter Sophie included 13 families, 44 readers and 8 pets. They named themselves "The Reading Regatta" and read a total of 346.5 hours over a 50 hour period the weekend of June 18-20, 2010. Sophie Netzel read a total of 26 hours, and other team members logged in anywhere between 1 and 23 hours. Children read out loud to family pets during the Readathon. The lucky pets included Maverick Farmer, Groundie Lloyd, Whimsey Netzel, Honey Schaffer, Lizzie Snyder and Dreidel, Fez and Sebastian Stacks.

50th Anniversary Party
At The Bookstore's 50th Anniversary Party on August 19th, The Bookstore will honor those who participated in the Readathon and will award prizes for Most Voracious Reader, Most Voracious Team, Most Money Raised and Best Team Spirit. Prizewinners will receive free gift certificates to The Bookstore. In addition, all persons attending the party will be eligible for free raffle prizes and suprise 50th Anniversary gifts. Persons interested in attending the free party are asked to RSVP to The Bookstore by calling (630) 469-2891.

For more information, please contact Jane Stroh or Margie White at The Bookstore, (630) 469-2891. More information is also available at The Bookstore's blog: www.justthebookstore.blogspot.com.

“FLYING SOLO” A One-Woman Play

On Sunday, September 26, 2010 at 2p.m., Midway Village Museum presents “Flying Solo” a special one-woman play at the DuPage County Historical Museum.  The DuPage County Historical Museum is located at 102 E Wesley Street in Wheaton IL.  Tickets for this event are $10.00 per person with limited seating available.  Reservations may be made by calling Sara Buttita 630-510-4956 or emailing sbuttita@wheatonparks.org
Many years before Amelia Earhart and Sally Ride, there was the remarkable Bessica Raiche.  During a time when society restricted a woman's choices for her life, Bessica strived to be the best at everything that she found new and challenging.  She studied painting in Paris, drove an automobile when most women were still being escorted in horse drawn carriages, became one of the first woman gynecologists in America and, with her husband Frank, designed and constructed aeroplanes in the parlor of their New York home.
Experience the inspirational story of Bessica Raiche in an original one woman play on the centennial anniversary day of her first historic solo flight.  After months of research by Midway Village Museum staff, the personality and adventures of this little-known woman aviation pioneer will come to life.  This play will portray Dr. Raiche in the year 1920, ten years after her first flight in Mineola, New York.
The DuPage County Historical Museum currently exists as a facility of Wheaton Park District and houses the administrative staff as well as Museum Curator and Educator. New museum staff members were introduced in early 2009 and are currently working to plan changing exhibits, programs, and re-establish the Museum as a thriving cultural hub for the community. The Museum is free and open weekdays from 8:30 am-4:30 pm and weekends from noon-4 pm.
For more information visit the Museum’s web site at www.dupagemuseum.org or call 630-510-4956.
