Wheaton Drama Teacher Plays Many Roles
Wheaton mom, Cindy Bolds has been a nurse, a military agent, an anchor women and dozens of other roles during her years of television, radio and theater work. "I started being interested in theater while I was a student at Glenbard South and then got a degree in theatre in college," she explains. "I worked at a radio station, made some connections and started going to auditions." She has worked with Big Idea Productions, Tower Productions and other production companies filling various roles and doing voice-overs.
In addition to professional work, Cindy also became involved with Wheaton Drama. "I wanted to do some stage work so I worked with them on a few shows and then appeared in "Diary of Anne Frank'". After doing several shows for Wheaton Drama, Cindy became their education coordinator. She plans and teaches during the annual one week Wheaton Drama summer theatre workshop where students are given exposure to acting, music and dance. The week culminates in a performance which is fun for the students and their parents. "The workshop is a chance for kids to explore acting and theater," says Cindy. "Even a shy child can get a lot from the program." One gratifying part of the workshop for Cindy is that some of the kids from the program auditioned for 'Oliver' and were selected. Cindy is hoping that children from this summer's program will make it into the cast of "Little Women", one of the five shows in the next season. "We are becoming like a training ground for future actors for Wheaton Drama shows," says Cindy.
Cindy says that while being on the set of Animal Planet was fun and playing different parts has been challenging, "Nothing has been as rewarding as the recent years I spend in education." About three years ago, Cindy wanted a position with a schedule that matched her three children's schedule so she became a District 200 teaching assistant working with special needs children. As she helped the children reach their education goals, she felt a connection with them. Both Cindy and her husband Alan have been supportive of the area schools. Alan served as a District 200 School Board member for six years and Cindy has been a willing volunteer.
Cindy plans to continue her many career paths as a teaching assistant, acting teacher and actress. She enjoys the many challenges her life brings her from working with students to standing in front of a camera. -Judy Buchenot
