FEBRUARY 2012
INSIDE THIS ISSUE
Arriving the First Week of February
THE PRETTY ISSUE
Hello and happy February! Our team has really enjoyed putting together “The Pretty Issue”– a first for us. The magazine itself actually inspired this month’s title because each time I am out and about in the community, readers tell me how “pretty” the magazine is– inside and out.
“We love the bright colors used, the beautiful photography and the creativity that is put into each issue– and this even includes the ads!” Each time I hear this it brings a smile to my face.
As you can imagine, it takes our creative team a very long time to replace themes each month and to make the pages so uniquely vivid and bright. First, it starts with the idea, then the fun begins! Once our amazing photographers and writers are complete with their community task lists for the month, and after all of our ads are complete, our creative team goes to work. As the Creative Director, this is my favorite part each month.
For several days out of each month you will find us laying out each page one by one, matching like colors and so on. We pay very close attention to detail and we hope this shows in each issue that is delivered to your home.
I am proud to say that each member on our team puts much pride into every issue and we just want to say “thank you” for all of the beautiful compliments we have been getting. It truly means alot to all of us and to our advertisers who have chosen our magazine to deliver their message to the community. We are all so appreciative of your support.
As you turn the pages this month you will find all things “pretty” available to you right here in your community. From salons & spas, recipe finds and shoe stores, to books about beauty, dining out packages and everything in between. You will truly love every page of this issue!
With Valentine’s Day this month, be sure to browse our Valentine’s Day gift guide on page 29. You will also find wedding ideas and trends throughout the issue. Our dining & cabaret section is packed with great dining and our health & wellness section is as healthy as ever! Special thanks to many new advertisers in 2012. Please contiune to support these businesses and refer your friends to them.
Also, now is a great time to subscribe if you haven’t already so you receive every monthly issue. Wehave many great themes planned for 2012 and we promise more unique stories and features than ever before. View our editorial schedule for 2012 and see which one is your issue– there is something for everyone! Also, we are always looking to feature fabulous faces around town so if you know a neighbor who is doing something remarkable or just being their ordinary wonderful self, please be sure to introduce us to them at editorial@glancermagazine.com.

MEET THE BAND | Fletcher Rockwell
On the night of Thursday, October 27, 2011, four men took the stage at Martyr's in Chicago looking a little beat up - well, one of them did anyway. Peter Nyberg gingerly took his place behind the drum set with one foot in a cast, courtesy of a flash mob mugging he'd suffered only a few weeks earlier. It was a big show for the band, and Peter knew the group was counting on him. The band was Fletcher Rockwell, and they admit they like to have fun, but they are dedicated to their music. That night, Peter demonstrated just that as he banged out the show –broken foot and all.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT | Go Baubling at Baubles
A sure way to enhance your look this February is to add a little bling to your natural beauty, and Baubles by Maclyn in downtown Naperville is the just the spot to satisfy your taste for cute and creative jewelry. Owned and operated by Kellyn Machacek, the store and its Geneva franchise are just as inspiring as the pieces it sells. In 2004, while juggling her roles as a wife and as a mother to 4- and 6-year-old and sons, Machacek decided to open her first store in Plainfield. And for the last six and a half years, she has been sharing her passion for jewelry with her Naperville customers by offering distinctive jewelry for a great price in a fun atmosphere.

RESIDENT RECIPE SHARE | Meet Emily De Palma of Downers Grove
Emily De Palma of Downers Grove was greatly inspired by her mother, Rosa De Palma, a chef par excellence even at 86 years old. As the first woman to open DuPage County's first all natural café (The Cherry Blossom Café in Lombard) and all natural bakery (The Magic Forest Bakery in Glen Ellyn), De Palma presently owns Healing Cuisine Cooking School and the Chestnut Tree Organic Preschool in Downers Grove. In busy times, she makes a lot of warming soups. "I aim for freshly made, quick meals that don't need a lot of actual cooking. Soups cook themselves while I am at home doing other things."

WINE CRITIQUE | 500 Years in the Making…
To learn more about wine it's imperative to explore different grapes from different countries. This month's choice is from Croatia - really Croatia?!? Yep! There is one theory that the Zinfandel grape originated there. They've been making wines for 2,500 years. That may seem inconceivable to some but it's true. Although Croatia is considered to be an "Old World" wine producer most of their larger wineries has adopted newer methods - It just so happens the one I chose is more traditional using methods that are 500 years old and I reaped the benefits!

Economic woes continue to play a part in today's weddings. Couples are opting for smaller weddings and choosing to spend their money more wisely. According to a recent study from TheWeddingReport.com, brides and grooms are paying for more of the wedding bill themselves (to the tune of $10,000 - $20,000), and they're having more fun with it.
"We are seeing couples move away from formal and traditional type weddings to fun, romantic, simple, casual, and unique weddings with a touch of formal and tradition," the report reads.
Here are more trends forecasted for 2012, as couples scale back, simplify and reflect their personalities.
