All My Sons
It's not only teacher Marge Uhlarik-Boller's students who have homework. As a director for Wheaton Drama, the English and drama teacher has been working for nearly a year on the group's upcoming production of Arthur Miller's classic All My Sons.
"I've been working on and off on All My Sons since I was asked to direct--this was in May of 2010," Marge explained. "I know the script inside and out and have been journaling on my vision for it for probably two months now. I met with my design team a couple of weeks ago and together we'll continue communications about how best to realize this show in terms of set and lighting design, costumes and music."
Marge, who is the middle school co-ordinator for the Da Vinci Academy in South Elgin, has been involved in theater for more than 40 years, working as a professional director for more than 25 of them.
"Directing is my first love because it's so completely creative--every aspect of the production is part of the director's vision and communicating that and seeing it come to fruition is part of the task. It's very mentally challenging and stimulating," she said. "I love working with actors and problem solving how best to communicate with each actor. The older I become the more I trust in my instincts and understand my role in the productions I choose to explore."
Although All My Sons was written 60 years ago, Marge says it is still relevant to modern audiences.
"The play cannot be modernized," she said. "It is set three years after the ending of World War II. It is an American classic piece that is just as timely today as when it was originally produced."
