BOUTIQUE OF THE MONTH — FEB 2012

THE SUNDANCE GALLERY
With a strong focus on Native American art and jewelry, The Sundance Gallery has increased their offerings to include classic and contemporary American handmade jewelry, gifts and accessories. Owner Janet Smith-Peterson has been in retail for over 26 years, serving the Naperville and St. Charles areas, and she opened her Downers Grove store in 2010. With a personal commitment to the American Indian reservations and helping the population build homes and better their community, Smith-Peterson keeps herself busy volunteering as well as running her boutique store. "It is the right thing to do; I was drawn to working with Native Americans because I believe as they do, we are one human family, all connected, not separate or different from each other in ways that count," Smith-Peterson says. She is very excited about the jewelry she just brought back from the Santo Domingo pueblo in New Mexico. "When I visited the pueblo, one of my artists took me to numerous friends of hers that create stunning turquoise and colorful mosaic jewelry," she says. "I was very honored to be welcomed into homes all over the pueblo." The fact that the items are hand selected during her travels into American Indian reservations around the country creates a special story for each featured piece. For Valentines Day, Smith-Peterson will introduce colorful hand-woven Alpaca wraps from Peru, and for the upcoming spring season, a new line of cowboy boots. A distinctive selection of jewelry, with a heart theme unique to The Sundance Gallery, will be the highlight for the month of February. -Kristen Kucharski
